I also think we should probably not make a lot of disparaging marks about Aiyuk, we don't know what Aiyuk is thinking

-It sounds like he took an absence from team activities and this voiding of his '26 contract was done back in July, the Niners were thinking ahead
I understand why Aiyuk held out, so if he went thru an injury just like this one that he would still be in good shape financially, he's been paid life changing money already

It looks like Aiyuk is leaving and I doubt we see him in a Niners jersey again
I applaud the SF 49'ers for making that move over the summer and most of us are just finding out about it

I'd be pissed if I was the 49'ers because ostensibly if this happened in June it means he was skipping rehab, doc visits, meetings,etc,etc. So he put the 49'ers in a position of paying him for this year when he was not doing everything in his power to actually play.

You are missing me if you think is this some kind of excuse for Aiyuk to act like this now, this all means this is how he's been acting.

I believe the 2nd statement is the correct one. He acted like a child, and also got some terrible advice from those around him (including TJ Houshawatsis) then when he finally got everything he wanted he flaked & didn’t show up for team functions. Just loser stuff, with zero self awareness as to how this would make him look to the league.

He’s a talented dude. He isn’t talented enough to pull this crap. I can’t imagine any team giving him more than a 1-year “prove it” deal at this point.

I think he has a screw loose. Like if someone came to me like, “ok, you get 10s of millions of dollars, you just need to show up to team meetings and go through rehab, check in with team trainers, etc.” that seems like pretty easy money.

Maybe I’m missing something.

At the time of the trade rumor, there was some speculation that Pickens might have come back to SF in such a deal.

That would have resulted in a significantly different FF landscape today. Jennings value likely takes a dip, Dallas is still short a receiver, and PIT… well PIT probably looks the same. lol

I have no concrete evidence of any of this but to take the measure they did back in July to basically sever him from any more guaranteed money...did the Niners inform Aiyuk back in July?
How did that conversation unfold or did it ever take place? Maybe they just sent the papers over to the lawyer, etc...
There is so much to unpack here and it must have started right after the injury or when the '24 season concluded.
They likely knew they had a terrible situation unfolding with Aiyuk and his rehab

Still give a lot of props to the SF front office and coaches for getting ahead of this.

Story reported by credible sources was that a trade was almost to the finish line with the Steelers. To the point I think if you asked the Steelers they'd have told you it was a done deal.

Aiyuk happened to be in the 49'ers building when it was about to go down, Kyle decided to seek him out to make one last effort and told Aiyuk he needed to decide, like quickly in a few hours or less, to accept SF's extension or the trade to the Steelers.

He opted to stay of course but was never sure why? I'm not critical of Aiyuk over it though and can understand it. Made me think of a time in my life when I was 10 years old and got sent to live primarily at a boarding school for the next 5 years. Hated it. Did everything I could to try and go home. Ran away multiple times, caused issues, etc, etc. Finally one day, after a few years, I broke everyone and out of the blue I got summoned to the principal offense and he told me to pack my things up and I was going home. To my own surprise I was not elated at this news, had been so consumed with getting away from the place that when it was finally presented to me I realized I'd be leaving behind friends and the life I'd kind of created for myself here, even if the place kind of sucked. Now I might have just essentially been a young man version of Brooks from Shawshank, or I just finally had a choice in the matter for the first time, but I could not process leaving that abrubtly and chose to remain. I later regretted it fwiw, but this is my long winded way of saying a little bit of me understands Aiyuk in that situation.

I don't like seeing players get large guaranteed contracts and then not put forth the effort, seemingly quit and that's what I feel like he did here.But I also don't like seeing players throw major money away and any human being who might dealing with mental issues or depression I hope they can get out of that funk, and I think that might what's at the heart of the matter here but that's just my speculation. This is very well said, and I fully admit that my posts are tainted with my bitterness as a 49ers fan to first have such turmoil, and later to have this result, with absolutely zero positive payoff for all the turmoil.

on a human level, you’re absolutely spot on. Whatever he’s going through, it’s not normal/rational behavior.i hope he gets the help he needs, if that’s the case.

That said, he may have also been a victim of bad advice, and poor guidance. Being an elite athlete doesn’t necessarily make one a canny businessman, and more often than not we’ve seen the opposite.

Whatever the cause, as a fan of the team, it sucks. And it precedes the events of the last 2 years. Big picture, if you recall, the 49ers could have drafted CeeDee Lamb. I was on this very forum lamenting about their pick of Kinlaw after Lamb fell into their laps.

Instead they drafted Aiyuk a few picks later, and now neither pick has worked out for the 49ers. Lamb is an all-pro hard-nosed top 3 NFL WR, while the 49ers have nothing to show from that draft. Hard not to be bitter as a fan, but again, it’s not all directed at, or caused by Aiyuk.

Eventually I’ll be able to show him some grace. Today is not that day.
