If you are a Tarantino fan but did not like Kill Bill II then I don't think you will like this movie either. It's better then Kill Bill II but not in the same universe as Reservoir Dogs or PF.

Part of the reason he worked so well as a character was precisely because we didn't get more of him IMOHe reminded me of Charles BronsonSilent and deadly, he was pitch perfectBut any additional info about him would have lessened his intrigue IMO

I wanted to reiterate this from the review I posted, because it's very interesting to me:

Waltz and Laurent have been unknown in America until now. The same could almost be said of German actress Diane Kruger ("Troy"), who plays Bridget von Hammersmark, an Allied spy. Kruger brings an élan, a passion and a bitter humor to this role that she's previously showed only in her European films. This casting trifecta - Waltz, Laurent, Kruger in roles that Hollywood stars would have killed for - makes the movie and speaks to Tarantino's pursuit of excellence over box office.

Furthermore, I am always very happy when a role is filled by an actor I've seen 1,000 times. So often in Hollywood, major stars are used in these kinds of roles, and it really detracts from the movie. I'm seeing a star, not the character.

One more note to Tarantino's critics:

Many of the criticisms levied against Tarantino's work are directly caused by the risks he takes. He could make safer, more methodical films. But that wouldn't be as interesting. The very thing that makes Tarantino a great artist is his bravery.

Laurent was brilliant as well... Waltz was beyond brilliant... It's so much more effective when someone is chilling while being elegant and polite. His little flourishes of fastidiousness, like the placement of the ink and his intricate zeros all built this reptilian presence... Incredible acting/direction. But the best single acting moment IMO was a combination of these two fine actors...

Though it's kind of obvious, I didn't pick up on this until I thought about this today: The Jew Hunter is, in almost every regard, a very educated, polite man. But there's a little twist on that persona after he eats the strudel. After he eats the dessert, he puts his cigarette out in the dessert. This is a vulgar gesture, for sure. But it's also a metaphor. A metaphor for his complete lack of empathy for the Jews. He send Jews to their deaths just as carelessly as he puts a cigarette out in a dessert.

I read that at Cannes the movie had a scene with Donny back home buying the bat, swinging it outside, going inside to ask if there was a heavier bat, and then getting a bunch of jews to sign it.Makes me wonder what else was cut out. Looks like I'm buying the dvd.

For me, it was kind of like the scene in the Patriot when Mel Gibson butchers the British guys with the tomahawk and is just way over the top. And his son stops him.

I don't think anyone feels too bad for Nazis. But what did you guys think?

I did not find it to be over the top. To me the build up was the best part of that scene. Hearing the bat hitting something in the cave a few times before he came out really built up the tension. I loved it. I will admit when I see Mel Gibson going off in the Patriot I get misty. I think I get misty because the camera pans to his two young boys seeing their father acting so brutally. I did not get that sense with the bat scene but I may have if there were kids watching the brutality of it.

Saw this today and I absolutely loved it. I had super high expectations and they were met. I wish it was longer. I am going to go back through this thread and read all the spoilers now. To me this was the biggest thing I am glad I did not know.

Same here. I didn't see that coming at all. And when you think about it, it's not much different than the wish-fulfillment that's used constantly in movies.

Til Schweiger was not in King Kong. Another German actor named Thomas Kretschmann was.

Ok. So is gutsy better for you? I didn't say he was a war hero. It takes guts to make artistic choices that you know will be unpopular. I think you're getting caught up in semantics. If a six year old goes to his first day of school despite his fear and the parent tells the kid that he was brave, that is not an inaccurate adjective.

Effing tarantino The man knows EVERYTHING about movies. I love that about him. I actually feel lucky to witness his work on screen.Interesting fact about him I read somewhere: he routinely hosts film nights, inviting other directors. The man is solely devoted to film. I love to hear how he casts actors, a sit down rather than an audition, and how he develops badass characters and ideas of how things like revenge should be portrayed, and then creates the story (my interpretation anyway). Its a great formula.He looks physically drained in his most recent interviews. I can only imagine his work ethic when directing/creating.As a fellow designer I have a serious man-crush for this guy

Waiting for the overrated wave to come.

Good movie but not one that is going to grab me repeatedly on cable. The opening scene at the cottage, the tavern and streudal scene were not classic scenes. The tavern scene was terrible with a confusing dud of a resolution.

The movie was pretty good. But let's not go overboard here. Most of the scenes with Brad Pitt were very entertaining. Movie would have been better served with a bit of editing and twenty more minutes of the bastards doing their thing.

Don't really see any reason to introduce that movie critic character. His whole character could have been edited out along with the Mike Myers scene. Just use the bastards/Pitt to head the meeting at the tavern.

Some critics have said that though the ending is in some ways a catharsis, it almost makes the actual history more painful. Yes, millions of people wanted revenge on Hitler. But as is the case with real revenge, fictional revenge cannot compensate for the tragic losses. So in some ways, the end is gleeful. I saw it as very sad.

Why would they repeatedly shoot each other in the crotch like that? After the first shot is fired, why not take the Nazi out in the head to minimize the damage he can do. Granted i could be mis-remembering what had happened, perhaps things would be a lot clearer to me if i could watch that scene again.

Im downloading a copy as we speak. If the subs are correct Ill let you know (so far, the only copies with subs were not the subs in the film, they were subs that were loosely translated and put in by someone, and they suck).

I thought the opening scene at the cottage was one of the most gripping scenes that I've seen in a long, long time. It was one of the highlights of the film for me. I wasn't as wowed by the streudel scene as some seem to have been.
