Is everyone driving and texting? (1 Viewer)

Pretty fun seeing the codgers in here whining about people having their phones in their hand all the time.

We don't complain about you needing the TV to be at "rocket launch" volume levels to blast through the amazon of ear-hair-induced-deafness..... how about you let us use our phones in peace. :banned:
I don't care what they do with their phones as long as they aren't driving. The other times I'll just laugh at them for keep checking their email every 3 minutes.
Was this back in 1998?

J/k. Kids are checking facebook, instagram, twitter, whatsapp, and texts. I don't think they even know what email is nowadays.

Commute home today ;

3 accidents, all rear enders in heavy traffic.

46 other people I witnessed texting or otherwise using their phone.

Karma is going to catch up with you if you text and drive.

I'm pretty guilty of this. Starting today I'm going to make an effort to stop cold turkey.
My wife called me out on reading a text once......ONCE. If I feel I have to read something on my phone I will pull over, but 99 times out of a 100 I will wait until I get to where I am going.. I don't have a problem with that at all. Of course I'm not addicted to my phone like some. No way in hell am I going to put my life or anyone else's life on the line for something as stupid as a cell phone. It amazes me how people feel they must look / respond right away to phone messages, or worse, check to see if they have a message when they just looked 5 minutes ago. One would think that damn phone is permanently attached to their hand.
I agree. What are you people talking about that it can't wait?

Maybe it's my age (49), but I don't feel this pull to constantly be in touch. It blows my mind that so many adults have turned into insecure teenagers in this respect.

:goodposting: s. And it goes beyond driving. Meetings, meals, every waking moment. I'm in front of a computer most of the day and I put my phone away as soon as I get home. I don't even answer the phone, let alone texts or emails. There isn't anything I can't wait until tomorrow for.
GET OFF MY LAWN!
I'm with him. I put my phone down when I get home and rarely look at it. I don't use it at all when driving. If it rings that's why I have voicemail. If someone texts the text will still be there when I stop. I even stopped doing a side gig because they constantly wanted me to communicate while driving by texting and they would get mad if it took me some time to respond as I wouldn't while driving. I don't get the whole I have to have my phone in my hand every minute stuff.
Well I guess you can get off my lawn too

I thought lawyers had their own thread here so that they wouldn't ruin others.
Sorry, I'll take my logic and objectivity back to that thread. Carry on with the wild statements and myopic demands based predominantly on emotional response.
Your "logic" is that it isn't that unsafe and you're pretty good at it. You sound like a ####ing idiot.
I'm arguing mostly against criminalizing the behavior. There's logic in my argument for that.

I've also provided some argument as to the logical calculation I do when engaging in the activity. You may disagree, but suggestion it's based in idiocy seems idiotic in of itself.

I'm bad about this when I stay home on workdays. Phone is blowing up all day long and so im constantly trying to keep up. I should just let my wife drive those days.

Speaking of distracted driving

You should probably start focusing on the road a little more, guy

40% of workplace fatalities are transportation related. Distracted driving is the single leading cause of those accidents. People need to stop being #######s and cut it out.

On the bright side, it gives me a lot of opportunities to be on the TV and radio talking about what a problem it is.

Do you like being on tv and radio?

Here's another problem I keep seeing pop up, at the risk of hijacking this thread: I am sick to death of people leaving small children and animals in locked vehicles in summer time. These people deserve to be beaten in the face with a crowbar to serve as a warning to others. If you're too busy to bring your kid/pet with you or to leave them with a responsible adult, then you're too busy to even think about having a child/pet, and should probably just sterilize yourselves to save us the trouble of potentially harming a child/pet because you're a moron.

This still happens?

Yup. Saw a post on my news feed as I was getting ready to go to sleep, and now I'm mad about it. I am dumbfounded about the thought process that makes people leave a kid in a hot car, because that makes absolutely no sense to me. Part of me wonders if we're just so narcissistic as a society that we think it won't happen to us, or if the nation's IQ has taken a beating to the point that the gene pool needs a healthy dose of chlorine.

Well, yeah but preferably not because people are dead.

Heard a doozy from my cleaning lady on Saturday - she was at the mall and a lady locked her baby in the car with the keys. Security comes and wants to break the window to get the baby out and the lady freaks out saying it's a brand new BMW. I know that sounds like a joke about LA, but it happened.

I think he was.
The worst one was a lady with two small kids in the front passenger side bucket seat.

Pay more attention to the actual asphalt and concrete than the nutcase drivers around me? Surely that's not what you meant, it hasn't changed much since this morning.

Never have and never will.

My dad was in insurance for 40 years. I didnt always listen to him but when it came to driving I sure as hell did.

I'll admit that early on before it became illegal and there was a lot of discussion about it I would do it. Didn't really think much of it and back then I only texted for work related things mostly. After it became illegal I didn't stop right away, it had become a habit unfortunately. But my wife (rightfully) pointed out how stupid it was and I've stopped doing it most of the time. I still slip up almost out of habit and boredom

Two things have helped me. One, I now take public transportation during my commute so it's a non-issue. Second, I started giving my phone to my wife while I drive and let her send a text if I just have to send one.

Almost got wozzed three times this morning. Two people came into my lane until I laid on the horn and a third made a right turn into the far left lane which had incoming traffic.

At least they were good at it though. If they were bad texters I may be dead right now.

Doing 84 and posting right now. No fatalities surprisingly.
A lot of people used the same logic to drink and drive. Hypothetically, you have a 99% chance of not having an accident. Is it worth the 1% chance you have an accident or the chance (granted even less) you kill someone?

This is going to be the creepiest thread ever if he does get into a bad accident one day.

So there were 220,000 car wrecks in North Carolina the last year we have records for. This means there were 600 or so a day in a 365 day year. Assuming that the majority happen where the majority of cars are would lead one to believe that in a major metro area it wouldn't be hard to see a wreck most days. Maybe even witness a few if you do more than commute. And NC isn't the biggest state population wise.

By the way the one percent figure given, if even close, still means 2200 of those are caused by distracted drivers with phones.
:lmao: No way would someone witness an accident even once a week even if they were on the road all day long.

You may be able to drive around and see the aftermath of a accident almost every day, but actually witnessed the event is a rare thing. I have seen maybe three or four in my entire lifetime.
Oh I've seen a bunch.

Aside from those I've been directly involved in, I've seen fender benders at drive-thrus, I saw a truck run OVER a car trying to take a left turn in a right turn only lane, neglecting to look to see if a car was in the left lane.

I saw a car sideswipe another car on a double lane off ramp.

I've seen multiple other fender bender/rear endings.

And that was all before I left my block in this morning!!

*that's the ticket

Are you serious? That lady should have gotten her car impounded on principle.

Most people are selfish and have a higher sense of self-importance than they should. Also, as a society it seems that a lot of us feel the need to be entertained/occupied for all of our waking time. Just sitting behind the wheel is not entertaining enough.

And it bears repeating...the need to help the people who are wrong on the internet is a never-ending charitable effort (a calling, really) that knows no downtime. It cannot wait.

note to self - stay away from Harry Manback.

Driving into work today was a bloodbath worthy of a Tarantino flick... broken bodies and shattered iPhones everywhere along the freeway.

The horrors, I tell you!

Here's the BLS data showing the 40%. Where can I see the distracted driving break down of this?

If I see someone texting while driving, I swerve in their direction to get their attention. Sometimes they drop their phones.

Unless they almost wreck me I don't say anything. You never know when one of these idiots will pull out a gun.
