Jalen Carter - Not as good as Kobie Turner but better than Kobe Bryant at talking trash (1 Viewer)

Yeah if it's true that he is not the one who wrecked, that is much better than what I envisioned, for his status going forward.
You may be accurately describing how teams will view this, and it does sound like he doesn't have a lot of legal exposure, but ethically speaking, if it turns out that he got in a 100 MPH drag race with someone who was drunk (suggesting he might have been as well) and then fled the scene after she crashed (to avoid having to take a Breathalyzer?) I wouldn't be inclined to cut him a whole lot of slack. He just sounds like someone who showed stupendously bad judgment and got very lucky.

Maybe the truth isn't that damning. But if I were a GM thinking of drafting him, I would definitely want to find out for sure.

Yeah, I think it ought to affect him majorly, but I think I now agree with the majority that it probably won't. We all make mistakes. This was a pretty bad one, and a bad character indication.

Lot of assumptions there.

Warren Sapp 1995 NFL Draft
Projected Top 5 pick out of University of Miami
Night before the draft, stories are released that Sapp failed multiple cocaine and marijuana tests
He ends up falling to No 12 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, would go on to a Hall of Fame career

How good is Jalen Carter?

Definitely. I didn't mean to suggest that was how it went down. I have no idea what actually happened. I was just saying if that were the case, he probably wouldn't face much in the way of legal consequences -- drag racing and leaving the scene of an accident are considered relatively minor crimes under the law -- but morally, I would consider it a pretty grave sin

So Sapp fell 7 spots when the news broke the night before the draft. How much will this news affect Carter 8 weeks from now?

That's a great question, not sure to be honest. In 8 weeks it could blow over or the media could have a field day with it if they choose to.
-I can't see him falling out of the Top 10-12 if he is No 1 overall material before this incident.

It really depends on what the facts are. If the Tunsil video had come out eight weeks before the draft, his draft position probably would have recovered, as it ultimately became clear that the facts around that video weren't that bad. On the other hand, if over the next couple months more damning facts emerge about Carter, it will obviously hurt his draft stock

They'll save it for draft night. Ohhh, by the way, he was drunk when it happened. Also he swerved and nicked the other car causing it to wreck.

Just got caught up on this story. I think it hurts him substantially.

Racing someone over 100mph with a BAC of .197, leaving the scene of an accident (potentially), and giving multiple stories to the police.

Carter claims the facts in the police report aren't accurate, but sounds like there is video evidence of him racing in his vehicle with the other one.

I think a lot will boil down to what his charges end up being and how forthcoming he was with information to the teams he has already talked to.
With all that said, he's only being charged with reckless driving.
True. It's a pretty light charge for leaving the scene of an accident while your teammate died.

Are there lighter charges for leaving a fender bender?
He admitted to being next to the other car as it crashed and two people died. At that point he chose to drive off and when brought back to the scene lied to the cops twice. He admitted knowing the other driver was drunk and now video evidence has emerged showing he was racing the other car at speeds topping 100mph in the middle of the night.

So yeah, he's lucky to only have the charges he does.

What's the penalty for knowing the other driver was drunk.

The bad guy here died.

I don't know Georgia law, but it's not uncommon for street racing that results in a fatality, all parties involved are at fault.

It was actually a bad girl. The guy who died was just a passenger.

And yeah, it may be that the law can't accurately capture the wrongness of what he did. That happens sometimes. But it doesn't mean the rest of us, NFL GMs included, have to abide by those same strictures

Smoke a joint and you can’t play. Kill somebody and head right to the starting lineup. NFL is a joke.
The NFL loosened the marijuana rules, you can still play. And if you pass a test then that counts for the whole year and you can go wild on it.

Also he didn't kill anyone.

Ah c'mon. Been in many street races in college, made a good chunk of $ doing so.

I would never imagine placing blame or responsibility for my actions on the other dude.

Not sure people get this

Not a lawyer but if you are drag racing and the other vehicle has a fatal crash, in most states you def can be charged with vehicular manslaughter. No burden of proof you physically caused the crash - you were drag racing, you were the cause.

Which is a misdemeanor charge so NBD eh? Max is 15 years.

He hasn't been charged with VM, but it's S.O.P. in my state. Drag racing, DA will charge with manslaughter.

Jalen drives a 707 hp Jeep Trackhawk, 0-60 in under 3 seconds. Guy who crashed was driving a Charger (don't know if it was a Hellcat but seems likely.) There is body cam footage floating around of the Athens cops pleading with Carter to stop driving fast, and tell your teammates that. This probably wasn't the first time they went racing.

Kind of odd the local yokels initially classified this as a single car crash when it clearly was not, and they knew that from eyewitness accounts the night of the fatality. But hey go Dawgs.

The second vehicle was being driven by a young female "recruiting specialist" and it was a work vehicle. From initial reporting, she wasn't supposed to use the vehicle outside of work functions. I'm thinking the NCAA still may have comments for UGA.

I think that body cam footage was from when Carter was previously cited for doing 89 in a 45. You know, wink wink one mph under losing his license.

correct, the body cam footage is from September

the AJC article on page 1 reported 3 vehicles
  • Carter's Jeep Trackhawk
  • 24 year old staffer/recruiting specialist Chandler LeCroy was driving the rented SUV - Chevy Blazer IIRC, media loves to refer to it as a luxory SUV - andI 20 year (OL Devin Willock (#77) was one of the passengers. both were killed. university says it was supposed to be used for recruiting purposes only.
  • linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson’s 2019 Dodge Charger - he has been charged with drag racing

We've all seen "character" concerns get overblown (e.g. Laremy Tunsil), but this is one of those times when I would have a really hard time selecting someone like this toward the top of the draft if I were a GM. Youthful mistakes are fine, but something like this shows a lack of judgement that makes me seriously question how long this person will last in professional sports. I think I'd be inclined to let some other team find out the answer to that question.
And wonder what they will do with millions

Ask Myles Garrett.

If he's not mocked to plummet out of the first round than I'd be mad if the Eagles passed by him at 10. I really wouldn't understand the narrative of "His situation is problematic that he can't go in the Top Ten.....but it's not a big enough deal to let him slide past 15"

Pretty sure the Lions will take him at 6 if he is there.

That's a great question, not sure to be honest. In 8 weeks it could blow over or the media could have a field day with it if they choose to.
-I can't see him falling out of the Top 10-12 if he is No 1 overall material before this incident.

Eagles would take him at 10 in a heartbeat. Been hearing rumors they want to trade up to get him.

They would be a perfect team for him to land on and would bridge or make up some of the gap from what they've lost.

1-QB
2-QB
3-DE
4-QB
5-Seattle is the first team where I see them wanting to grab Carter so you might have to move up to say #4

Would Indy slide down to 10 and accept #30 as payment? Let's say that Philly wants to keep that pick so they can use it THIS YEAR and try to make another deep run.
I would say Philly might want to waive their '24 1st out there assuming it will be at or near where they are picking this year.
That #30 pick will secure another likely starter for you all landing on a talented team, those picks usually do well.

I don't think they'll trade another first to move up for a DT. It will probably be one of those draft night deals...Jalen Carter still there at 6...7...*we have a trade...and the cost will be maybe their second or a 2024 second since they have two of those.
