Joe Needs Help-Best Local Writers Covering Teams? (1 Viewer)

Cowboys:

I disagree with the previous Cowboy suggestions. The best writer is Raphael Vega. He does not write for a newspaper, however the article are in-depth and offer REAL analysis and thought.

I'll try to remember the link to his blog.

This is must reading for serious Cowboy fans.

Patriots:

There are two.  Michael Felger of The Boston Herald and Tom Curran of the Providence Journal.  They both know their stuff and cover the Pats on a day to day basis.  They both tell it like it is (good or bad) and neither has an agenda.  I saw Mike Reiss's name mentioned.  IMO I like his stuff but he's more of a blogger than a guy who really knows the finer details of the game like Curran.  If you're purely looking for info without analysis hed be good.  Now that I think of it the guys over at Patriots.com are fantastic as well.  Not sure if they qualify as a local writer since they write for the team.

The bottom of the barrel is Ron Borges of the Boston Globe.  He's incredibly arrogant and has a huge ax to grind with Belichick and loves to take shots at him whenever he gets a chance.  The fact he has been proven wrong so much has made him beside himself and he has lost a ton of respect from many locals.
Dude, you stole my post. :hot: Felger (Boston) and Curran (Providence) are the best.

Ron Borges is a clown who has a vendetta against Belichick, despite the 3 Lombardi's. I'm surprised he still has a job. Kinda like Dan Shaunessey with the Red Sox. I've never seen two more self-important crybabies.
Which is the best?
It's hard for me to say with New England being such a unique region. There's alot of cross-platform, cross-market Patriots coverage going on around here.Curran is a Providence writer, but appears on WEEI (Boston sports talk radio), WSKO (Providence sports talk), as well as FSN New England. Felger also appears on WEEI and FSN New England, while also covering the Pats for the Sporting News.

Living where I do, I get coverage from both the Boston and Providence crews, in print, radio and TV. They're both great, but if you pinned me down, I'd say Curran.

Tom Kowalski, Oakland Press, Detroit Lions. Self proclaimed insider, on the radio alot, I happen to like him the most, because I'm biased and know him personally.

Mike O'hara, Detroit News/Free Press, Detroit Lions. Does an ok job.
Kowalski is a bit of a shill. He reminds me of Mel Kiper where he'll throw a lot of crap against the wall and then when something sticks he's say "See I told you." Unfortunately there isn't much of an alternative though. Just take his "predictions" with a large grain of salt.
My thoughts exactly. Likes to make "big" headlines, but they don't always end up the way he predicts. I like listening to him, but take everything with a grain of salt, ie. wait to hear the rest of the story. Seems like sometimes he slants stories to either back up previous predictions or make bad predictions look better.

Agreed...he's pretty funny too.

I agree..same with Tony Ortiz...

the truth...i think it is rafael vela... he is a smart dude (college professor in media studies?)... i think site is currently on donation basis, but popularity has been surging (cowboys are a popular team), & he claimed they were climbing up the internet ranking for sites of this kind...

EXTREMELY knowledgeable & insightful, & he seems to be growing his insider network & becoming increasingly connected...

not counting FBG (which is all purpose, one stop shop & fantasy oriented), vela's site is EASILY the best i have seen on internet of its kind... i linked a lot of stuff from training camp reports last season & it got universally high marks.

Stl Rams

Jeff Gordon

jgordon@post-dispatch.com

Beat writer for the Stl Post dispatch and on 1380 espn radio for Stl.
Not that Jeff Gordon does a bad job but Jim Thomas of the Post Dispatch is much more informed on a day-to-day basis. Gordon is a columnist with the PD who writes pieces on everything from the Rams, Blues, Cardinals, MU, etc...Thomas is the Rams beat writer. His only job is to write about the Rams and he does a great job with it.
keep in mind i'm not in STL, but continued to follow rams from when they were in LA...thomas probably most prestigious nationally known writer as sporting news beat reporter... he is well connected & very insightful... he really knows his stuff... i used to see his name come up a lot with the scouting prospect profiles, maybe on nfl site proper (?), but don't know if he still does them...

nick wagoner may be employed by rams site (there was a recent question about whether he was still there?)... he has most voluminous reports i have seen lately, daily i think, & obviously has insider access...

i have heard of gordon, but i don't recall him as much as few other STL journalists...

howard balzer & brian (bryan?) burwell are couple local journalists that also have some national recognition (burwell used to be field reporter for espn i think, & maybe still is?) from writing for usa today... balzer used to have regular column in usa today sports weekly on wed, but that was 1-2 years ago... he is still in loop & mentioned often on rams homer boards, but not sure if he is considered rams regular beat writer... too bad, as he was also super insightful & well connected... burwell was more a puff piece guy...

bernie miklasz is anoth STL journalist that comes up a lot... he is also connected, but not as sure with new coaching staff... he would have occasional nuggets, but was more hit & miss for me (kind of tabloidy & sensationalistic for my taste, & got overly caught up in political intrigue in rams FO, imo)... he also cover baseball, too (at least) & doesn't seem to be as active year round...

randy karraker is another local guy that i think is well respected by rams insiders, is knowedgeable & puts out quaility stuff.

Kansas City Chiefs

I dont like any of them lol, but if I had to choose the best of the worst it would be Adam Teicher or the Kansas City Star. You never hear him an many other shows ripping the team. He simply reports the news and does a good job at that. You dont see much of his personal views in his writing....I wouldnt be able to tell what his thoughts are about the team if I tried.

On the other hand, is RHonda Moss of 610 Sports, a fledgling sports radio station here in KC. She has been wrong on MANY "breaking stories". She has had several Chiefs players that have had to verbally berate her, as she tries to make more news than report the news. She always has to ask the confrontational question to draw attention to herself. That whole station is pretty bad.

Seattle Seahawks

Clare Farnsworth - Seattle PI

clarefarnsworth@seattlepi.com

206-448-8016

Farnsworth is the man when it comes to Seattle football. He's the most "in-touch" with team insiders, and it doesn't hurt that he's a great writer. Very professional and does a good job of being objective.
Mike Sando runs circles around Farnsworth

Teicher is the man. I've spoken with him on the air before. Very informative!

Yikes...I knew that. It's like someone else typed it. Vela...and yes he is fantastic.

Neither two of Bostons best Patriot writers have been mentioned as of yet...although Curran is very good Felger is very quirky and kind of a clown IMO. The bets writers for the Pates are.

Ron Hobson Patriot Ledger and Kevin Mannix Boston Herald..and if you do any research there is no doubt about this..these two guys are know as the touchdown twins and their word on the Pats is gold around here(I live in Boston and am a season ticket holder) between them they have been covering the Patriots for almost 70 years..so take it from there.

Joe I would say these are your guys..Mannix is strictly a Pats beat writer for the Boston Herald, has a much bigger base or readers and its likely easier to find his work..Hobson covers all sports for the Ledger but has been following and writing about the Pats for over 40 years now in different places..forget Felger though.

below is from http://www.bostonsportsmedia.com/ which is a good site for finding media info. On the front page their is a who is the best beat writers from different Boston sports teams but I did not notice a poll for the Pats yet.

Nick Cafardo form the Boston Globe is also very good...Ma

Kevin Mannix

Senior football writer. One half of the "Touchdown Twins" along with Patriot-Ledger writer Ron Hobson. Mannix started covering the Patriots full time for the Herald in 1979. He's been a columnist since 1999, with his main focus still on the Patriots and the NFL. He's somehow managed to overcome his infamous labeling of Bill Belichick as "duplicitous pond scum". He makes frequent appearances on WEEI, usually on the midday show and the Sunday morning NFL show.

Michael Felger

Patriots beat writer. Felger is a Jekyll and Hyde persona. In print, he is generally level, consistent and factual. On radio and TV he is bombastic, controversial and demonstrative. Felger hails from Wisconsin, and is a dyed in the wool Packer and Brett Favre fan, though to his credit he was one of the first in the local media to jump aboard the Tom Brady express. Felger also contributes Patriot reports to The Sporting News website. Felger is a frequent co-host of WEEI's Big Show, as well as making appearances on FSNE's New England Sports Tonight and WBZ's Sports Final. Felger is married to WBZ news anchor Sara Underwood.

or you can check some of these articles below from all patriots writers around Boston and decide for yourself.. :)

http://www.bostonsportsmedia.com/links/patriots.php

well you can take it from here but for me its

Hobson or Mannix, Curran and Carfardo.

or you could email one of these guys and ask for

yourself. God knows I have emailed many of them many times.. :)

I don't believe Mannix is writing for the Herald anymore. I haven't seen him around in ages. I do like him but I think he's a goner. Hobson knows a lot about Pats history but since I don't think I have ever read the Patriot Ledger I can't comment on his writing. Just what I hear on EEI...and he hasn't been on in ages. As for Cafardo he does nothing for me. He's not bad but I always see him as a baseball guy who's still learning football and seems one step behind a guy like Curran.

Now that Boston Mentioned this..maybe Curran is your guy...his stuff is easy to find and he is good..I had thought Mannix only worked closer to the season..maybe he did retire.

I've been wondering what happened to him. He's always been a mainstay. Yet, I haven't seen him in the Herald or heard him on EEI in a real long time. He definetly knows his stuff. It's like he just dissapeared because I definetly didn't see/hear about him retiring. A quick sidenote on Mannix. He wrote an article during the Tuna era and I just didn't agree with it. My buddy said I should call him up to discuss it and I did. While dialing the number I really didn't know what to expect. The phone rings and they connect me to him and he picks up. I ended up talking Pats indepth with him for about 45 minutes. He was a great guy, very friendly and really impressed me. I liked him before but really respected him after that.

I am sure many Packer fans will disagree with me, as reasonable men can have a difference of opinion on such matters, but I will go with Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal. McGinn is largely hated in Packerland due to his often negative columns and observations. A proud anti-homer, McGinn professes to do his job without emotional attachment to any team or player and is clearly not a Packer fan.

The thing I like about McGinn is that he does not purport to be a football expert himself, but he has great connections in NFL teams personel/scouting departments that he uses throughout the season - always as anonymous sources. He makes great observations in weekly Tuesday colums detailing the previous game and keeps stats you won't find anywhere else (such as "bad blocks" that lead to a loss of yards, % of times a given DE is double-teamed by the opposition on passing plays, etc.) Unfortunately for most, I believe much of his online content is subscriber material. As a non-resident Packer fan, it is the one source of info I pay for each year.

McGinn's colleague at the MJS, Cliff Cristl (also famously not a Packer fan), is also quite good, in a curmudgeonly way - less insightful but more colorful. Loves to take the contrarian position and engages fans in insults and rants during his weekly online chat sessions.

Houston Texas: John McClain, beat writer for the Houston Chronicle (www.chron.com).

Though his regular radio interviews are probably more informative than his columns, if you ask me. I think he's willing to go out further on the limb on the radio than he is in print.
:goodposting: He's got my vote (grew up in Houston but lived 10 years in NYC and still think JC is the best).

Also, I've e-mailed him a few times and he will within that day, e-mail you back.

The worst? Richard Justice from www.chron.com what a COMPLETE JOKE he is, total moron.

Terrence Moore- Falcons- Just awful. Seems to go out of his way to be controversial. He's not the normal Falcons "guy," more an editorialist, but just way out in left field.
Thanks Tecumseh,That's the stuff I need to know too. Lots of towns have the :stirspot: guy and it's good to know those too.

J
Along those lines, you can ignore anything T.J. Simers (LA Times) says about the Chargers. Anything he writes is purely for :stirspot: value.

Pay attention to what these guys have said about Moore, Joe.He write ridiculously controversial stuff.

Felger also appears on WEEI
Several people mentioned this and I don't believe it is true...Felger now hosts an afternoon commute show on ESPN Boston AM890...And this thread needs more Borges :lmao:

I don't really care too much for the local writers for the sole newspaper here in Jacksonville. I guess I'd go with Vito Stellino over Bart Hubbach, who both cover the Jags. Columnists Mike Freeman and Gene Frenette are okay but provide more opinion than information.

Probbaly the source I find the most informative is Vic Ketchman who has been around the league for years and writes for the Jaguars team site. I enjoy his "Ask Vic" column.

http://www.jaguars.com/News/askvic.asp

Another internet writer who seems to have a handle on the Jags is Pete Prisco from CBSSportsline. Prisco used to write for the newspaper here and does an afternoon sports talk radio gig in town.

He's no longer on WEEI. He's doing ESPN which unfortunately has a signal that if you don't wrap yourself in aluminum foil during a thunderstorm has a signal that goes about 500 yards.

Hands down the ugliest sportswriter in the country. When he worked here in Baltimore, his picture on his column was used by mothers as an example to their kids. "Eat your peas or you'll grow up to look like this."

Allen Wilson writes for the Buffalo News but he isn't much of a reporter. Just writes what everyone else hears and reads 24 hours previously.

Jerry Sullivan is a columnist for the Buffalo News that everyone loves to hate. He was extrememly critical of the Tom Donahoe managmenet team, but I think support has moved to Sullivan's side since TD was canned.

All the guys at the Times Picayune will inject a certain amount of opinion into their writing. Of the four main guys, Pete Finney and John DeShazier are almost exclusively opinion/slant guys who write it how they see it. Mike Triplett, Jimmy Smith are the guys that try to stick to the story and keep it on a factual level.

Felger does guest spots on The Big Show (evening commute). If he doesn't do that anymore, it must be a relatively new thing. But to Joe's point, he's looking for writers, not what radio shows they appear on. Sorry to derail, Joe!

I agree with all of this JaxBill. I would only add that there's a new website run by fans here that is off to a very promising start. These are all maniac Jag fans and some of the reporting is much better than you'll find in any traditional outlets. If you have or are considering any Jaguars for your fantasy roster it's a good place to check out.

Jean-Jacques Taylor at cowboysplus.com is IMHO the best unbiased writer. He is very reliable, has an outstanding track record, has inside sources and he speaks for the fans.

Mickey Spagnola works for the Cowboys(dallascowboys.com)...................enough said.
I agree with Taylor, always seems to be right on.
I may need to edit most post as I believe Mickey speaks for the cowboys and therefore is their puppet, but I'm a fan of JT. So you and I would agree on both accounts.

Not to add another Boston voice, but I would add to the Mike Reiss bandwagon. He's more a newsgatherer/blogger than he is a pure analyst but no one works harder.

Curran and Felger are both creating schticks for themselves as they've become radio talkshow guys, and the record in Boston for writers who become radio personalities isn't great. I look at guys like Buckley, Callahan, Massarotti, Borges, Shaugnessy - as soon as they've become well-known for media appearances, they basically became characatures and write to their persona. I agree that Felger and Curran are quality writers, but no doubt Ive seen some change in their work quality as public appearances became the norm (less with Curran than with Felger).

Borges is on a different level, along with Shaugnessy as two miserable human beings who I actively avoid.

And you stole my post! :boxing: Read above, and consider the Pats a closed issue.

For the Vikings I like Sean Jensen from the Pioneer Press.

Charley Walters also from PP is absolutely the worst.

I also like Mr. Cheer or Die

Hey Guys,

Need some help from the fans here.

Who is the best writer covering your team?

Please list:

Team, writer, who they write for. If you've got more to say about why you like the person, that's cool too.

And I'll add, you don't necessarily have to live in the NFL town. If you're a die hard Dolphins fan living in Seattle but read every thing Alex Marvez writes, let me know that too.

Thanks.

J
Jim Wyatt and Paul Kuharsky from the Tennessean, in that order.

I don't disagree with this; the Santa Rosa Press Democrat and Contra Costa Times are both local newspapers that do a good job covering the 49ers. If I were picking, though, I'd nominate Kevin Lynch, the SF Chronicle beat writer for the 49ers, and of course Ira Miller, columnist from the Chronicle.

This is from a description of Miller that showed up on a Google search:

Miller, a 1966 Penn State graduate, has covered pro football for for the San Francisco Chronicle since 1977. An award-winning sports writer, Miller is a past president of the Pro Football Writers of America and has served on the board of selectors for the Pro Football Hall of Fame for 13 years. In addition, Miller was the 1993 recipient of the #### McCann Memorial Award for long and distinguished coverage of pro football, and has a plaque in his honor permanently displayed in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. He has worked for several television and radio stations as a correspondent and guest expert.

Incidentally for a list of prominent sportwriters, you could look at the Hall of Fame selection committee.

I'd trust Mark Gaughan of the Buffalo News over all of the above.
