Las Vegas Raiders thread - ☠ Keep firin' 'em Pete, eventually it'll be you and the real culprit for family Christmas dinner at Allegiant ☠ (13 Viewers)

Chip Kelly latest in a long line of people who stole millions from the Raiders. Dude's contract was 3 yrs $18 MM, hopefully not guaranteed, thankfully not cap restricted.

Raiders homers, how is your team against TEs? Are they decent because they are bad against WRs and teams don’t have to pass to their TEs?

This is just not good. Chip Kelly was screwing up play calls and calling for plays that weren't installed.

It is being reported by the Athletic that Brady pushed for Chip and Geno. Clearly he is not qualified to make these type of decisions. Hot read…all day long. Building a competitive franchise, not so much
I’ve said this a few times. Just because someone was a great player and QB, doesn’t make them good at being a GM (read: Elway. Soon-to-read: Brady)

I wanted Geno back for the Jets. I would never have hired Chip. I am wildly unqualified to select either, so I have some (it's not infinite) sympathy for owners who have no idea how to go about selecting who runs football operations. Think about it. Who would you hire and why would you hire them? I think there are plenty of knowledgeable people around, but how on earth do the owners know? Jets fans watch this dilemma repeat itself every five years with Woody. Everybody always says, "get out of the way" to the owner. I'd respond, "Sure, but I also have to hire football ops. How do I do that?"

Agreed.

Difference is that Woody has been shown to be a meddling owner who interferes (at least as far as I’ve heard). Whereas Mark Davis at least seems to stay out of the way once he hires the GM (or mega-personality coach like Gruden). In each instance, it seems like he’s doing the “right thing” (except for the McDaniels hire which we all thought sucked from the get go) and then it still falls apart in 2 years or less.

I have zero clue how to fix this doom spiral. We thought having “an adult in the room” like Carroll was going to set them on the right path, and that’ll only work if the path goes waaaay down and then goes back up again.

While we’re giving supportive sympathy to other sad-sack franchises, I’ll throw the same your way for your lowly Jets. As a former NYer (and hater of all NY teams, ironically. I was always the contrarian growing up the Jets and the Mets were the only 2 NY teams I didn’t despise. The Mets, cuz I went to games a lot as a young kid and teen. And the Jets because I had family members who loved them and it was so sad to see them fail year after year. So good luck to you and your Jets to finally get on the right track.

Oh, absolutely agree. I sound like I'm defending Woody there somehow, and I'm just looking at that particular dilemma. Woody is unreal and I really, really have no sympathy for him in any other endeavor with either the Jet or in his life. He has a lousy character and it shows in so many ways and it follows him wherever he goes. He is a constant problem, and he should be thanking his lucky stars and gracious about nearly everything; but he is the opposite of that. And he meddles with the Jets' day-to-day.

Thank you. That is kind and we'll take all the support we can get. I was really hard on Aaron Glenn, but let's see if he and Mougey can keep Woody at bay and build something great for everybody. It is my sincere hope that they succeed.

Finally got one of the third round rookie OLs in the game and Geno immediately sacked.
Wasn't him though, Forsythe on the other side got trucked. We're also playing an OL I didn't know was on our roster - #56 Antonio Mafi. He was just promoted from practice squad on 11/17. Where's our other 3rd rounder Charles Grant, is he hurt?

Fascinating franchise to look at from afar. A 300 year old coach, a QB apparently suddenly past his prime you probably can’t move off of. Drafted a RB in the top-10 to run behind 5 trash cans at OL. No wideouts. And the defense may be worse?

The GM was real well respected by everybody who covered Tampa so maybe he can fix it but seems like a huge mess.

So you’re saying the raiders might not be good this year?
;)

Are the Raiders going to fire Carroll after this season? Serious question.
Probably. I think they should fire him and go get someone like Todd Monken. Maybe Joe Brady or Matt Burke (Houston's DC).

Firing his son Brennan would appease some people but, I would also want to see Olsen go too. The idea of suffering through, yet another stint with that schlub may be enough to drive me away next year.

If they keep Pete they need to bring in a creative offensive mind and, Davis needs to mandate Pete stop meddling in the offense.

I don't think any of us can put up with Olsen as the OC again.

As far as Pete.......he's the head coach. You're saying the head coach of a football team should have no say in the direction of his team's offense? If you need to tell your head coach he can't have any input on one side of the ball he shouldn't be your head coach. That would create more dysfunction than they have now. Who would the OC answer to? Brady? Spytek? Mark?

Situation feels absolutely hopeless. Raiders get fed one washed coach after another, and whenever they find even a modecum of success (Gruden 1, JDR, Gruden 2) the NFL gods somehow find a way to kick the team in the *****. Total **** show at this point, and I suspect the only way out of this is if/when the league gets what it really wants, which is for Al Davis' legacy to not just be ruined but extracted. I don't root against Mork, but it feels like no matter what he does, this team is cursed for as long as Davis blood runs it.

It doesn't have to be. Fix the OL and a lot falls into place. Geno is no All-Pro but he's not this bad. We have an elite TE and exciting+ RB and a defense that can be respectable/good when not asked to do 145% of what it should be.

The problem is how do we fix the OL? There's not a lot of hope Package Pete will do the right thing here. If the OL coach were any other human being on the planet he'd have already been fired, but his last name is Carroll so he's safe and our QB's life is not.

There is no such thing as a curse. The problem is poor personnel decisions. The o line has struggled for years and there hasn’t been a great QB since Gannon. Heck, Carr was a good QB but horrible decisions stopped the team from going farther when he was here. The defense was atrocious during the Carr years. Many of us have been complaining about the poor decisions for a decade. Building a team is not rocket science. Address the damn o line and D line. How about a real LB? Instead the Raiders waste draft capital on a RB or TE or reach for players over and over in the first round. I’m certain 99% of us could have drafted better.

The problem is how do we fix the OL?

And this problem is made harder by the fact that there are 10-20 other franchises asking the same question, meaning they are all competing for the same players. This is a reason why some UFA OL contracts seemed unexpectedly high last offseason.
