\\m// Official Dealer's Choice Music Mixtape Draft (1 Viewer)

No time to prep for this draft (not that it would make a difference) so something vanilla...

1.21 -- 'Roseanna' by Toto, Title with only a person's name.
Loved watching Steve Lukather (who sings lead here) play on the Beatles tribute this past week. Always been a killer guitarist.

You're smaller than my wife imagined;

Surprised you were human

There shouldn't be this radio silence,

but what are the options...

when someone great is gone (x8)

1.20 - LCD Soundsystem - "Someone Great" (sad category)

If you've never heard the song or never paid attention to the lyrics, it's a song about James Murphy reminiscing about growing up and growing apart from a close friend. He receives a phone call in the middle of the night telling him that this friend has died suddenly and unexpectedly. Then he describes the days leading up to the funeral and laments at the funeral/wake that he'll never be able to talk to his friend again.

I'm shooting for a mix that people can dance to and I'm trying to represent more current music where possible...so this one fits the bill in both respects. I'm passing on my other favorite horribly sad song for this because this one should fit on my mix better. Interested to see if anyone takes the other one.
I love, love this song. There is a tremendous connection to it with myself, my brother and a cousin we lost recently. It's understood between my brother and I, that the Toadies cover of it will be played at the funeral of whoever goes first.

Toadies version

:goodposting:

The late Jeff Porcaro whipping out the now-called "Roseanna shuffle" on the kit, too. Not a vanilla selection IMHO.

Anyone able to take a PM with my next pick? I'm gonna be gone for the next several hours and it looks like I'll be up for my 2nd rounder sometime in those hours.

Going to try to slip this in the gay blue grassish category. It's not a stand up bass with banjos and fiddles, but it is classified indie folk, which is kind of how I understood the category -- contemporary tweaked modern blueish folk grass... right? Anway, the ambient quality is what I'm seeking, so... hopefully new to some of you. Probably the kind of band DougB is seeking more exposure to.

They're pretty fresh out of Los Angeles. I've seen them live and enjoyed it. Feel free to overrule for the category, and I'll go with a mandolin led instrumental.

2.05 Lord Huron -- Ends of the Earth

I've never heard that version, thanks. It hits home with me as well.

Given that we have an entire category devoted to Scandinavians, and JML appears to be trying to pick Scandinavians at every turn, and I have no idea if we have any other Bjork lovers here, I'm reaching on this one early.

I've interpreted "best scream" to mean most adorable scream.

2.03 - Bjork - "It's Oh So Quiet" (best scream category)
I was debating that for my pick for scandinavian/best scream/bad lyrics.

I'll try to keep the draft rolling through tonight but

to keep the music flowing over the long weekend, everybody can post one pick each on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

One for Lincoln, one for Washington and one for your sweetheart

ETA: Clarification: If you have outstanding picks from rounds 1 or 2, you can make those too. By Tuesday, everybody should have five picks on the board.

There are a few categories where I've still only got one good idea, but this one's guaranteed to be the only track I can pull for this cat without cheating or punting so I'll take it now

Trampled By Turtles - Wait So Long (bluish grass)

only heard of about 20% of the picks do far. great to hear new things, but makes me realize how limited my music knowledge is.

I plan to post a non-drafter list/mix at the end too.

Never heard of these guys. But it's the only pick you could think of? You don't listen to folk at all? Sometimes I think that, along with blues and some classic rock, it's ALL I listen to.

I don't see it in post #3 ... was their a time restriction on the Bluegrass/Folk selection? Or is it all-time whatever?

Interesting....I don't really listen to much folk and I like TBT. If you like folk, you'll probably love them.

Looks like I'm up:

2.04: "Pictures of Matchstick Men", Status Quo (Beatlesesque)

The guys didn't have a sitar in the studio, but they're trying like heck to get that sound on their electrics. This one is Status Quo's only American chart single, though they've remained immmense in the U.K.

Interesting live version from 2009. They've really held up.
Nice one.

Starting to get more into these guys - just picked up their Quo album.
Congrats ####er. First snipe of the draft.

Love this song.

I'm not sure what folk is anymore but I sure don't listen to much of it. Anyway I keep forgetting this category isn't just bluegrass..

I kind of feel the same way about blues. Have no idea where it ends and R&B/Soul begins.

That wasn't meant as a criticism GB. Maybe this draft will introduce you to some great folk artists.

I did a little research on modern female blues and from what I can tell the difference is the blues singers are white

Theres no clear line. But traditional blues is pretty recognizable when you hear it.

Having a similar issue. Or maybe I should say that all the songs I want to take are probably too far on the R&B/Soul side.

2.12 -- Jesus Children of America – Stevie Wonder (religious song)

OK, if this were a judged draft, I think it might be fair to ding me because Stevie is a pretty Jesus-y dude. But he isn’t a gospel singer. He’s no more Jesus-y than Bono, for example.

And this song, which I had originally considered as the #1 album deep track before being gobsmacked to learn that Innervisions only got to #3, is just a prime slice of Stevie at the height of his powers. So funky. Obviously, I’m not introducing most of you to anything new, but if I’ve got to get my preach on in this mix (and I felt nominating Dear God or something was outside the bounds of the category), I’ve got to have it.

The person I'm considering has been nominated for Blues Grammys. But Jethro Tull has won a heavy metal Grammy. It's not the most authoritative source.

I know what "the blues" traditionally sounds like. It tends to bore the hell out of me. Even on my vintage stuff, I've always gravitated toward jump blues.

Someone has Kibitzer's PM, I believe. I am here to make my pick after that.

shocked.

1.05 - Ben Folds Five - For All The Pretty People (Acoustic 1990-2014)

Some salty (NSFW) language at the beginning, but it is not really part of the song. Sorry this is the only way I could find it on YouTube. Spotify has it in all it's glory and I'll use that for my mixtape.
this link will start it at 54:12 http://youtu.be/IDB6caPWUl8?t=54m12s after all the fun
I mislabled my category, sry - Should have been post-1990 instrumentals
I did not do a write up for this as there isn't much to write up.

The instrumental was on the bonus tracks of the remastered version of the 1997 album Whatever and Ever Amen, the groups 2nd release. It is the band basically just dicking around with Folds on bass and you can hear he and Robert Sledge who played piano (regular bassist) talking back and forth about the mic before the song gets rolling.

The song makes me happy.
