MAD - Artist - Round 4 - #1's have been posted (4 Viewers)

Oh, screw it. My next two MAD drafts wil be Neil Diamond.

And yes, I hear the groans from here. Too bad; so sad. But it will have to be two lists (maybe with something else in between) because he has more top 40 hits than there are slots. I want to include other people's covers, too. Kind of necessary in his case. His catalogue is so large I'v been avoiding it, but here goes nothing. And I don't really want a greatest hits album. I can just post a couple of those.

At least I don't have to do the Christmas albums. (I guess he really likes Christmas music. Maybe it reminds him of his childhood.)

He does fit the singer/songwriter mode.

I guess I should have a poll about "Sweet Caroline".
I actually like Neil Diamond. Was the second concert I ever saw - summer of 1976 at Pine Knob.

In Liverpool from Ringo 2012 (2012)

Previously ranked #27 - prior write-up below

Ringo has stated that he doesn't want to write an autobiography because no one would want to hear about anything but the Beatles years, so instead uses his songs to tell his full story. He sings about the old days in Liverpool a lot. We have, for instance, "Liverpool 8," "The Other Side of Liverpool," "Rory and the Hurricanes," and more. As I discussed above, it's a bummer that he - the one who actually writes nice little songs about Liverpool - is now disliked there due to his off-the-cuff remark during that TV interview, while John is beloved.

Ringo had the roughest upbringing of any of the Beatles, having grown up poor in a tough and violent working-class area of inner-city Liverpool called Dingle. His parents divorced when he was 4 or 5, and he had very little contact with his father thereafter. His mother took a variety of back-breaking jobs to try to support the family, cleaning houses or working in bars. After contracting an infection during an appendectomy when he was six, Ringo was in a coma for several days, and a year-long recovery took him out of school for that period of time. By eight years old, he still hadn't learned to read. When Ringo had almost recovered from all of that and caught up in school, at 13 he got TB and was in a hospital for two years. It was during this time that he learned to drum, as the hospital staff encouraged participation in music as a therapy to assist their patients. When Ringo was finally released from the hospital, he never went back to school and instead took a variety of jobs such as machinist, waiter, railway worker...anything to eke out a living...until Rory and the Hurricanes started to have enough success for him to be a full-time musician.

Since Liverpool is such a focus of his recent songwriting, I wanted to include one of these songs, and this is my favorite of the group. It was co-written by Dave Stewart and appeared on Ringo's 17th studio album, Ringo 2012. I need to find another word to call Ringo's songs other than "amiable," but this one fits right in with the last as just a pleasant pop song, and it's a cheerful trip down memory lane. This is the only song I'll be listing from this album, but much like the one above, the record as a whole is not a bad listen. It continues his usual themes of peace and love combined with nostalgia, and features a nice tight band that includes, in addition to Stewart, Joe Walsh, Van Dyke Parks, Edgar Winter, among others. The album also has examples of this odd tendency of Ringo to re-record his own songs, as it includes remakes of "Wings" and "Step Lightly" from earlier Ringo albums, neither of which was a song we really needed another version of. "Anthem," which gets some play on the Beatles Channel, is on this record.
The melody ever so slightly reminds me of Waterloo Sunset.

Big fan too, as I’ve stated in these threads over the years.

Did anyone else catch the Broadway musical A Beautiful Noise? It was quite good.

I though people would mind. I'm glad someone wants to hear this.

I picked "A Beautiful Noise" in one of our drafts. I really like that song. (I think the topic was songs about the city.)

Produced by Robbie Robertson

collaboration with Linda Perry. I'm embarrassed to admit I had no idea who she was, but I found that she was not only the lead singer and songwriter of 4 Non Blondes, but has spent the last 20+ years penning and producing some huge hits by Christina Aguilera, Pink, Gwen Stefani, Alicia Keys and a ton more
I think this thread has shown that even despite some great music lovers being here, songwriters still get the shaft for recognition lol
Linda Perry, Dianne Warren, even ****ing Desmond Child all great 80s, 90s and beyond songwriters.
Look up their discography's and it will make you love, or in some cases loathe their output.

Guys like Michael Bolton and Richard Marx made the transition from songwriters to artist/performers.
I’ve thought of doing Leiber/Stoller or Goffin/King for one of these.
Good Lord. All 30 of us could use Leiber/Stoller in the same countdown and still not run out of good songs. Goffin/King aren't far behind.

Jazz might be hardest, but I am guessing like prog there is a jazz sweet spot for me.

If you like prog, it's not a giant step to fusion bands like Return to Forever or Mahavishnu Orchestra. At least there won't be any singers prancing around.

I do a Jazz mix every year in the Summerpalooza football league but I've avoided it in MADs threads because I know a lot of people don't dig it and the songs tend to be on the long side. I did have a wonderful week listening to Herbie Hancock in the run-up to MADs #2. He'd be my choice if I ever go that route because of the diversity of his catalog.
I'm doing P Funk in this one and someone else is doing Yes. If folks don't like long songs, they may want their "skip" buttons handy.

KP, I agree with Eephus - check out some of the '70s fusion bands if you're interested in knowing jazz better. Most had a lot of rock elements, so that'll help you avoid getting the bends.

I'm a big Neil Diamond fan. He was a wonderful performer and an incredible songwriter. There's a reason people keep recording his songs, and it ain't "irony".

Listening to Freedom Of Choice by Devo last night for really the first time ever. What an album! "Gates of Steel" is a power pop/punk song nonpareil. I know people will probably snicker at that, but it's out of my age range by a few years and I just stuck with the songs I was familiar with from the radio.

Some A+ songs on the record.

Thanks for the tips, gentlemen. I will start there. I have my 10 artists for my reggae research written down, and I knew were my punk avenues were likely going to be already.

But that is not why we are here - the playlist for MAD31s Part 4 has been sent!! 🎧

I love that album. I did a DEVO deep dive a few years ago and got to that one. Speaking of covers I was reminded of Soundgarden's cover of Girl U Want.

I just added it.

I also forgot to post last night that I didn't see @Charlie Steiner's song, so that is the only one that is not on a list. There were also a couple mistakes that I will PM the people about after work (if I remember).

#31 JOURNEY - SPACEMAN

I struggled a ton with what is on and off this list. I am certain that there will be fans that are going to say WTF - where is X song? I was being serious when I said I had 80+ songs that I was loving and had to knock out. Mostly what missed were: longer jams from the Perry era (I liked those in the first 3 albums slightly better), instrumentals, and a handful of huge hits.

Since I have been going on and on about the Gregg Rolie era of Journey, I wanted to start off with a track from the first 3 albums. I also like that it had more than just a whiff of a previous MAD31 artist as well. Here we have a tune that Rolie wrote and is singing on, and he wrote the lyrics with Mr. Dunbar.

ETA: I probably should put the band name since I have 2.

I was born two months after my parents were at that concert. Thankfully not 9 months like many other kids.

#31 LORD HURON - FOOL FOR LOVE

Less of a struggle here due to having way fewer albums and options. Lord Huron playlist is much less in order of my loves, I just wanted to add another band that I have been digging for a bit and doing this made me discover the first album more and listen to some live versions that I really loved as well. Mostly just wanted to grab people's attention with the first track and have a track from Strange Trails lead off the countdown.

Lindsey Stirling-oz-Kashmir

I’m not sure this would genuinely be a top 31 for me but I wanted to kick things off with a cover of one of my favorite songs from arguably the greatest rock band of all time.

"’Kashmir’ has always been one of my favorite rock songs and I'm so excited I got to work with the legendary producers Howard Benson
(Motörhead, All American Rejects) and Neil Sanderson (Three Days Grace, My Darkest Days) on imagining a way to bring it to life in my style,” Lindsey shares.

As an artist who has consistently pushed the boundaries of what’s possible with the violin, Lindsey Stirling's "Kashmir" cover serves as a testament to her musical innovation and her ability to seamlessly bridge the gap between genres. Her arrangement captivates listeners with its dynamic range, showcasing her ability to transition from delicate and ethereal moments to explosive crescendos. Lindsey’s electric violin folds into the epic melody of the rock classic seamlessly, in a unique take on Led Zeppelin’s song.

Question for you all. When I see ta youtube link now, the link works just fine to get the correct song, but on the output here on the forum page, it appears all the text is in German. Anyone else seeing this? Anyone know how to fix it?

I forget who mentioned it but apparently it’s due to the shortened url ending in de or something like that.

No, that's not the reason. The same German text appears whether the YouTube URL is in the youtube.com or y2u.be format.

#31 - Black Star

The more attention paying viewers may look back and think "but wait, titus, you picked this as your number one in the UK countdown, why is this #31?"

Well, you've answered your own question. For all intents and purposes, this IS the number 1. I just didn't want the thread to get into a spot where we reveal the 3's, and then it's a case of "well he's obviously picked Black Star at 1 so this obvious unused track will be 2", and there to be no sense of anticipation as to what will appear going forward. So I'll take it here and be done with it

Yes mine are worst to first. The Pretty Reckless has 7 #1 songs of which this is one. All are in my list but only one made the top 10.

The Walkmen #31 (Scoresman rank # 6)

As mentioned, I'm starting with two bangers to introduce new people to the band and get rolling on a good, high note. Angela Surf City is an infectious, hard rock song off their 2010 album "Lisbon" that I moved up to showcase the drumming of Matt Barrick. It's on full display in this one. The song has an intense surfer rock beat throughout.

Its been said that the Walkmen play with restraint. That is not the case with this song.

The lyrics are rather miserable but I just love them.

You took the high road
I couldn't find you up there
You kept your jaw wired closed
I never noticed before

I used to see the signs
Now I dream of the time
I was holding on to you
For a lack of anything to do

Johnny Marr #31 (solo song #11) - Johnny Marr + The Healers - Caught Up (2003)

We start the Marr countdown in mid-career with a song from his initial solo album released 20 years after his debut with The Smiths. Johnny was already a veteran of several successful bands but this is when he took the leap from stage left to center stage. Typically for Marr, he made his solo debut as part of a group and had to be talked into attaching his name to the front by the other members of The Healers.

There's usually a Ringo connection and there's a big one here: the drummer for The Healers is Ringo's son Zak Starkey. Zak and Johnny formed the Healers three years before the album's release and developed the material live. They added bassist Alonza Bevan from Kula Shaker and supplemented the core band with extra percussionists and a keyboard player. "Caught Up" is kind of an unusual entry in Marr's catalog. He wanted his new band's sound to be different from his previous work so this one is a very guitar dominant song that's reminiscent of fellow Mancunians The Stone Roses. Marr takes a couple of long guitar solos which he rarely does in his other musical projects.

This is the only album Marr made with The Healers. It was an important record for him because it was his first experience as a frontman but he set all that aside temporarily when he broke up the band. He went back to being a sideman with couple of different bands before returning as a solo artist a decade later. As far as I can tell, Johnny has never performed any of the Healers' material live during his second/current solo career.

#31 Funkadelic - "Get Off Your *** And Jam"

This song has a strange history, even for this strange band. While recording the Let's Take It To The Stage LP in 1975, they had the vocals laid down. Per George Clinton:

We finished one take, took a smoke break or something, and noticed that a white kid had wandered into the studio, a smack addict. We didn't know him at all, but he said he played a little guitar, and he wanted to know if he could play with us and pick up a little cash in the process. We set him up, started the track, and he just started to play like he was possessed. He did all the rock 'n' roll that hadn't been heard for a few years, and he did it for the entirety of the track. Even when the song ended, he didn't stop. All of us were up there goggle-eyed, saying, "Damn." We had agreed on 25 bucks, but I gave him 50 because I loved it.

In 2009, guitarist Paul Warren, who played with just about everyone ever born, claimed it was him.

I don't know who it is, but the term "shred" was invented for this type of guitar playing. "Face-melting" also comes to mind.

As for the vocals, lol......It's two lines and Funkadelic had to know they had no hope of getting it on the radio. Nonetheless, it became a highlight of their concerts - when you heard this, you knew things were getting turned up.

The tune gave me a Smithereens vibe. His voice didn't, which isn't meant as an insult.

Yours is one of the playlists I'm really looking forward to hearing. These guys are great, and aside from a few expected tunes, this list could be all over the place.

31.

Song: A Shot in the Arm
Artist: Wilco
Album: Summerteeth
Year: 1999

The ashtray says you were up all night
When you went to bed with your darkest mind
Your pillow wept and covered your eyes
And you finally slept while the sun caught fire

Summerteeth was Wilco's third album and it signaled a departure from their alt-country roots. I consider a lot of this album to be Beach Boys Pet Sounds-esque. It's more sonic and harmonic that their first two albums which were mostly country-esque.

I love the lyrics to this song and it's peppiness.

Not sure why the pics don't show - hope it wasn't my formatting.

This really isn't my 31st favorite by them - it's closer to the top half. But it's a perfect list "opener". From their debut album "Too Fast For Love", it has that very raw, almost punk-ish sound that marked this album. Most of us discovered this album after Shout at the Devil made them huge, and the difference in sound is substantial. The albums sounded far more polished with each new one. I like them all, but there's something about this first album that's just so genuine - it's four skinny, hungry, broke guys rocking out, and it sounds that way.

I really struggled on how to do this after opening my big mouth (keyboard?) and claiming them. I even PM'ed @Pip's Invitation asking him what he thought. Let's just say that your "list could be all over the place" comment is in play.

I really struggled deciding how to kick this thing off. OLP's signature sound is Raine's energetic vocals, ambiguous lyrics, and piercing percussion work. It took a while, but I eventually landed on Denied. It features each of those foundational pieces along with better than usual guitar work from lead Mike Turner. It's a staple on the workout playlist.
