MAD - Artist - Round 4 - #1's have been posted (3 Viewers)

Known
Creep - probably like 90% of peoples #1

I mean I would guess that more than 10% either don't identify Radiohead as "that Creep band" or did and subsequently picked out a better track (likely off the next two albums before to the average indie rocker they jumped the shark), but yeah, it is probably number one for more people than it really should be, and I'm talking as someone who really liked Pablo Honey
“Creep” probably still resonates with many after their early performance at MTV’s Beach House in 1993:

We can do the M-aD themed countdown next if you'd like (and I've been keeping a half-assed list of participants and their categories), but I can also wait if you'd rather do Artist Countdown #5 first. No problem either way!
@krista4

(Or people who have decided)

What are the themes so far. My wife was curious what type of stuff people are doing, and no surprise i could only remember about 2.

This is what I had in my notes (obviously not well-formatted, etc.):

JML – Batman

Zegras – New wave

Kupcho – rain

Mrs. R – umlauts

DQ – TV theme songs

Raging weasel – name-checking Beatles/songs

Pip - Top 31 songs from albums produced and/or engineered by Todd Rundgren.

Dr. O – Top 31 guitarists I’ve seen live

Uruk – 1960-63

Yo Mama – World’s Worst Superheroes

Eephus – Single (Named) Ladies

ditkaburgers - TBD

KP – Songs from artists not on shuke’s list

Tau837 – hair metal

krista and/or OH - Chicagoland

Mister CIA – something something Texas locales in the title songs
I texted DrIanMalcolm and he said he is in for this.

Mötley CrüeJWBHome Sweet Home

Been slacking a bit - Xmas stuff and all that. I do have to say over the last few rounds, the Crüe feels a bit lacking too. There's a block of songs in my top 12 that are solid hits / 80's anthems, and worthy of their high status, but to me, also sound a bit same-y... Wild Kickstart Situation and all, ya know? Kind of pales in comparison to the YES / Funkadelic / Lennox and other songs.

They get better / more unique-sounding from here on out though. This one is off Theater of Pain, and is their signature power ballad. For a moment, it sounded like they were growing up, but this came out right after Vince's accident and in the middle of Nikki's heroin habit. It's still a really good song and kind of set the tone for hair metal bands to have a big power ballad every now and again.

#7: LORD HURON - UNTIL THE NIGHT TURNS

After a couple slow tracks we get to this rockin' tune about the end of the world from Strange Trails. I mentioned one of the songs around, but I forgot that this is the middle song of a trio that starts off the album, and they all blend together so well when listening in order. The album starts Love Like Ghosts --> Until the Night Turns ---> Dead Man's Hand. Now we have encountered all 3 in the countdown. Hard to narrow down the lyrics I like the most. The opening couple lines stand out, but this stretch leading into the buildup at the end is where I landed...

I got a helluva view for the end of the world
I've got a bottle of booze and a beautiful girl
If I'm a'goin to die I'm gonna go in style

What if the world dies with the sunrise?
Baby it's all right we'll be up all night
What if we're unmade when the stars fade?
Keep me going 'til the night turns into the day

Next: back to back rockin' Track 2s from the main albums on the countdown with a very similar song structure. Maybe taking a page from Triumph's playbook?

Hey guys, nice website.
Thanks for the invite

For the theme draft I will go with
Songs in D#Minor. The saddest key of all. A personal selection
Nice - my alternative theme was songs with unusual time signatures, which I still may go with.
Ooo- "La Villa Strangiato" here we come.
:scared:
I could go with Jacob’s Ladder instead.
THIS one??

Tim MaiaDon QuixoteDo Leme ao Pontal
This one is a celebration of Rio de Janiero’s beaches (“From Leme to Pontal”). Leme is most northern beach in Rio de Janiero, and Pontal on the south. Just a feel-good party funk.

Popular song for him at concerts. Here is a video link to him in concert performing this song.

Candlebox #7
Song: It’s Alright
Album: Happy Pills (1998)

(Youtube Version) Candlebox - It's Alright (HQ)
(Music video) Candlebox - It's Alright (Official Music Video) (see also below)
(Live Version) Candlebox "It's Alright" live @ Orange Ave Jam (Orlando)

It's alright what you confess to me
Where you're at right now baby, it's alright with me
Behind your truths or somewhere inside your lies
These long cold days of gray, they color your eyes

I include the official video for a sense of completeness. You may quickly notice that it’s shorter than the other versions. So what was cut out? Why, the section that’s faster, louder, more hard-charging. The super short version being that there was some disagreement between the band and the label, making this the final album for this label, and also for roughly 10 years. I might have already covered that ground, and if not, it’s definitely messy.

Anyway, “It’s Alright” was the highest charting song off of Happy Pills. Though the album had two other charting singles, the first #28 “Happy Pills” and the other… is yet to show up. So it's safe to say that if you enjoyed a slower song from Happy Pills with a bit of an up-tempo section mixed in, there's more of that on the way. Speaking of on the way...

Next on the countdown, the 2nd title that's a pronoun. First person plural, you (technically) can’t spell the album it’s on without it.

12's

Just like the "R S T L N E" from a Wheel of Fortune puzzle, you can flip the panel over for the songs by REM, Smiths, Tweedy, Lord Huron and Radiohead for me.

Plus a few others.

Song for Leigh

Golden - one of my favorite songs to hear live by MMJ. Usually just Jim James solo with an acoustic guitar. In the early years, he would drape his face with his long hair so all you could see was his eyes, intermittently, while singing this song. He's obviously become much less shy on stage since then.....

Never Without You

I’m going full on cheese mode for theme after all. 140.6 / iron man triathlon themed. I’m in base building mode for IM Florida so it fits.
What means this? Lol
Which part?
Theme is racing, long distance, competition, 🏊‍♂️ 🚲 🏃‍♂️
A few songs that could be included but won’t make the cut - don’t stop believing, we are the champions, Lindsey’s don’t let this feeling fade, Garth brooks the River, etc.

Marr #7 / Solo #3 - Johnny Marr - "Somewhere" (2023)

This is the most recent song from my countdown, released as a single last September. It's totally out of sync from the musical zeitgeist of 2023 but it's great that Johnny can put out a gorgeous piece of guitar pop like "Somewhere" in his 60th year. As always with Marr, it all starts with the guitar. I'm filling in the "soaring" box this time on my Johnny Marr adjective bingo card because the little six note pattern he plays over the chorus elevates the song to another level. The song sounds so familiar but I can't quite put my finger on what other song it reminds me of.

The lyrics are Johnny at his usual enigmatic self, he sings about "somewhere", "something" and "someday" without ever getting into specifics because he's "living in the abstract" and "mixing up illusion". It doesn't matter because the riffs and hooks are as precise as the words are vague.

If I remember, as the themed countdown progresses and we start to prepare for MAD 5, I might make a poll to determine my artist for that one. The three artists I have in mind are in very different genres and it would be interesting to see which one is of most interest (in the poll I would identify the genre but not the artist).
I like this idea.

I am also waffling too much and need a little more focus. I already have doubts on interest level and not wanting to a slot in the 31 people want to skip. I would love input from any and all for Opeth. Do I go for the full experience with some growls and my experience with them (if I remember right I have 7 of 31 with some growls), or do I provide a growl-free experience for the MAD31? My current idea and playlist is a ramp up from 1-21 covering it all followed by my attempt to narrow down a true top 10 of their songs. The other one I've been working on is a growl free list mimicking their flow in concerts - fast/slow/fast.
My Opeth knowledge and likes is basically Still Life to Ghost Reveries(my personal fav)
My Opeth knowledge is zero
Opeth away, growls and all

Two votes for the Full Opeth.

IMO overall the Mastodon playlist was harder/more metal. Opeth's baseline is more prog. They have 14 albums, I am only doing 11 for the countdown I think. Of those, 6 have growls, 5 are clean, and even on the albums with growls all the songs aren't that way.

Only 3 more cuts to make for the themed 31!! Much harder than I thought to make cuts - this one was fun.
Every time I think I’m down to 31, I think of three more songs (or @Mrs. Rannous gives me more good ideas).
I am trying my best to not take this one quite as seriously and to resist this impulse. However, I was really able to limit my pool by the theme and not allowing one hit wonders. If I can't recommend at least a full album they got crossed off. I am also not trying to figure out favorites of each - just a song that caught my ear and tried my best to find a song I haven't used in another format as well.

Yeah - I had a really tough time with the “Cookie Monster” vocals if you recall (since you asked for honesty). I’ll be honest and say, I would surely skip past songs using it this time around as well. It’s just not for me, and I surely tried last time.

What is the deep dive of the week, @-OZ- ?
Following the trend of Avian Yuletide gifts, we’re moving from last week’s counting crows to the Black Crows.
I’m not sure if Sheryl will make an appearance.
This week we’re staying with the theme and rolling out the Eagles

I really enjoyed the black crowes, including their March release Happiness Bastards. I didn’t find any new favorites but many made my likes that I didn’t remember. Dirty cold sun is almost as good as their prime.
Amorica isn’t on Pandora, that was disappointing. Many of the eagles albums aren’t either but their compilations mostly are.

Brave soul. ;)

My favorite of the newer Black Crowes is Before the Frost.. The others i found to be inconsistent, but that one i seem to pop on as much as Southern Harmony. I like the feel if them recording that live.

Please don’t not choose them though because of that especially if their more proggy metal because I did like the music of Mastadon and would probably like Opeth even more - except for those growly songs - I can’t say exactly why but that’s nails on a chalkboard for me.

I know it’s not cool around here but I like the Eagles (band, not NFL) quite a lot. As much as I’m into Americana now, that makes sense I guess.

No, nothing like that. They are my favorite band and I want to do a MAD31 for them.

I also have a hard time describing them. I don't consider Mastodon to be "cookie monster" vocals, so it took me a second to understand what you were referring to - the songs that Troy sang or was more involved in. I think Opeth's music is beautiful - that is not something I would say about Mastodon. I was also listening to my current Opeth playlist and I think people like Weasel ironically might like it less than others. There is a good 9 song stretch at the beginning where Journey and Triumph probably sound harder. Yes, when Mikael gets to the growls, I would describe them as cookie monster style (he provides a lot of growls on other bands' album, and had a death metal side project as well) , but they are also blended with the clean on the same songs most of the time. It is more like a character's voice in a story, especially on the new album.

I think I will keep the format as is because I like the way it flows and it will force me to think to about and decide what my top 10 would be. I need to tweak anyway, because the new album is already a top 3 album of theirs for me, and I made the playlist before it came out. An idea I had was maybe to provide a growl-free song in the write up as an alternative listen.

I was totally joking here too. I like the songs I know, but never have dug into them besides the main album.

Eagles made great music. Their problem was that they weren't satisfied with that and wanted to be IMPORTANT (just ask them....they'll tell ya).

The best description I've ever heard attached to that band was that they were the Beach Boys spiced with mesquite. There are worse compliments, but Henley & Frye couldn't handle being what they were. So they turned into miserable people who made miserable music - until they broke up and made better solo records than anything on The Long Run.

I guess I didn’t get caught up in the behind the scenes stuff. I don’t hate The Long Run but it definitely has its clunkers and they were at the end. I like some of Henleys solo stuff - and I’d probably like it even more if it wasn’t so 80s produced.

I get the shtick - and how they regressed rather than progressed view though. I like the country rock stuff the best as well.

Fair points.
They are important in the history of rock / country-rock, so that’s something.
Totally agree that their more recent stuff isn’t close to the quality of their older stuff.

#6 Parliament - "Up For The Down Stroke"

I sent in "Aqua Boogie" in this spot by mistake. It's basically "Flashlight Part II". Great song, but I reshuffled and screwed up the playlist.

To my ACTUAL selection....... This song pretty much set the tone for every funk and hip-hop record that came afterwards. There are whistles.....um....whistling at random points. The vocals are obscene gospel. The horns and keys are doing things that should be illegal.

Next, Bootsy out-progs the proggers

The last of The Christmas songs!
I haven’t been writing these up, mostly because they would be pretty much the same write up each time.
Coincidentally, Facebook memories came up yesterday with pictures from her concert I took my wife to 3 years ago (I didn’t think it was that long!)
The family listens to the Lindsey Christmas Pandora channel whenever we’re in the car together.

Merry Christmas y’all!

6. Beaucoups of Blues from Beaucoups of Blues (1970)

Previously ranked #7 - prior write-up below

A fabulous vocal performance from Ringo? Well, I'm grading on a Ringo Curve here, and I think this is his best on my countdown. As I've repeated endlessly, Ringo's simple, flat vocal style adapted to the lugubrious country feel lends itself well to C&W music; the title track from this album that I discussed earlier is more evidence of that. He croons in an appropriately languid style on the verses but then belts his damn heart out on the choruses. Of course, he's also surrounded by the best musicians in Nashville at the time, which helps him remain faithful to the C&W sound as well. I've wondered if he just naturally understands the phrasing and inflections, or if he was coached on it; either way, he nails that. I'm not a big fan of straight-up country music, and this album is exactly that, but if you enjoy the style, I highly recommend this record. As mentioned when I first discussed it, it was critically well-received at the time, and the retrospective view of it has only grown even more positive, with many considering it a rival to Ringo as Ringo's best album. Even surly John called it "a good record."

Yes #6 - Owner of a Lonely Heart
Album - 90125 (1983)

Time for the band’s biggest mainstream commercial hit.

To me, this is a quintessential early-80s rock hit. It’s got everything you want in a monster 80s hit - it’s got sound effects, it’s got a programmed drum machine, it’s got a catchy chorus, it’s got an awesome guitar solo, it’s got an impeccably produced music video that got tons of MTV play.

To this day, the intro still elicits a “F Yeah!” from me every time I hear it. Love this song.

♥️💔🥁🎸

My top five Ringo are in the same order as they were when I did my post-Beatles Beatles thread a few years ago. Two of them are "chalk" that most or all of you will recognize, even if you don't know they're Ringo. The other three are some wonderful gems I uncovered when listening through all of the post-Beatles EPs and LPs that Ringo has released. Hope you'll enjoy!
