El Floppo – Mallet Rock

When Your Dream Of Perfect Beauty Comes True - Bill Nelson

oh! didn't realize we were dropping already... had an idea for an overall intro with some examples that I can maybe do later when I have time.

Mallet stuff seemed to have a renaissance in the 80s alongside new wave and percussive heavy post-punk. I have a few early 80s tunes in here- tried to give different examples.

Bill Nelson is best known for Flaming Desire- a great synth-heavy new wave tune from the great synth-heavy new-wave/proto-ambient 1982 album, A Love that Whirls. My tune comes from that album, was one of my favorites- bouncy and of the time- and features Bill on the marimba playing behind the bouncy synths and drum-machine.

Zegras11 – New wave

Come On Eileen - Dexys Midnight Runners
"Come On Eileen" is a song by the English group Dexys Midnight Runners (credited to Dexys Midnight Runners and the Emerald Express), released in the United Kingdom in June 1982 as a single from their second studio album Too-Rye-Ay. It reached number one in the United States and was their second number one hit in the UK, following 1980's "Geno". The song was produced by Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley and was initially claimed to be written by Kevin Rowland, Jim Paterson and Billy Adams, although Rowland later stated that the essence of the tune should be attributed to Kevin Archer.
Also, sampled in the Girl Talk track Set It Off.
Am I the only one who expected Girl Talk to be actual girls? :bag:
Great catch - I'm surprised you made it to the end of the song. ;) That part was an accident. Mostly just going with song title and Radiohead sample for the track.
Even if I hate a song I usually listen to all of it unless it's also super long.
Recognized the Aerosmith sample and another I haven't figured out yet
That is one of my favorite things about these albums. SO many samples to try to figure out. I am terrible with lyrics, but I am good at recognizing songs I've heard from just short samples, so this is right up my alley. It is basically like the ending game from MTV's Remote Control when you have a wall of videos and samples to try to figure out.

IF you or anybody else cares or are interested enough, HERE is a link to all the samples that he used on the Feed the Animals album. I liked to listen a few times and then look. I think I had about 12-15 MAD artists I noticed from the album and still missed a few.

falguy – songs by 31 different Canadian artists

Burn It To The Ground - Nickelbac
Probably the "biggest" international artist in my list and I probably wouldn't have included it as I tried to exclude the more well known artists, but think it's such a great rock song and perfect to start a playlist. I know Nickelback is, to say the least, a polarizing band but I don't care what you say this song rocks!

Also, my list is in no particular order, just tried to spread out the song styles throughout.

Knowing I had this song coming first I chuckled at the recent Nickelback comments by @El Floppo . I said to myself "hang tight, they're coming"
lol... oh damn- I nickelbacked only because I didn't think you'd be picking them... sorry! solid tune though!

Come on Eileen... initially claimed to be written by Kevin Rowland, Jim Paterson and Billy Adams, although Rowland later stated that the essence of the tune should be attributed to Kevin Archer.

80s New Wave Kroq... my wheelhouse. I'm going to enjoy your contribution probably more than any other's. This has to be one of the most fun singalongs ever. I'm more obsessed with surf guitar than rockabilly guitar but they both come from that era which was overrun by the British Invasion. Billy Adams had little to do with writing Come on Eileen, but he plays the heck out of it. He was the old man in the band who replaced and improved upon Archer. I've drafted Rock, Pretty Mama before. That's teenage Billy rockabillying his way into the Hall of Fame in the 50s. He gave up rockabilly for gospel in the 60s cuz them Brits took over and he found Jesus. Then he what the heck shows up in the UK playing New Wave in the 80s, and lemme tell ya, the live shows were awesome.

These Eyes was the other sample that I knew so thanks, was driving me crazy.
Only know 2 of the other sampled songs but didn't catch them first time through.

Single (Named) Ladies #31
Shannon - "Let The Music Play" (1983)

Full name: Brenda Shannon Greene (middle named mononym)

The first 10-15 of any countdown are always sort of a pick 'em so I'm leading off with a song that serves as a mission statement for this project.

Shannon was a college student and amateur singer in NYC when she was discovered while performing in her cousin's studio. Producers/DJs Chris Barbosa and Mark Liggett needed a singer to front a song they'd worked out using the relatively new Roland TR-808 drum machine and TB-303 bass synthesizer. The song with Shannon's vocal track became a club hit and eventually became her only Top 40 single peaking at #8 in the US.

The song combined the dance floor energy of disco with the synthetic sounds from new wave and early hip hop. It pioneered a new subgenre which was eventually dubbed freestyle featuring artists like Expose and Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam. 80s Eephus can attest that "Let the Music Play" sounded fresh at the time and was one of the few songs by Black artists to get played at the new wave dance clubs.

The video is pretty typical of early 80s minor label dance music videos. Shannon sings and dances in a spangly striped top in front of some irregularly shaped risers. Around the midway point, she's joined by a group of five backup dancers who are dressed like they've been hired by the caterers for the after party. They do some steps, kicks and robotic prancing on the risers behind Shannon; it's almost like they're warming up for something but the song fades out before much happens.

Mrs. Rannous – umlauts

Ride of the Valkyries - Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra

Kill the wabbit! Kill the wabbit! Kill the WAB-bit!

(I can't be the only one for whom this pops into mind)

John Maddens Lunchbox – Batman

Batman Theme (Spotify) - The Jam

My MAD 2 artist. I did a parallel countdown of their cover songs and ranked this #21. What I said there:

Why was this on In the City? Was there an early Who connection? As a matter of fact, there was! The Who recorded a cover for the rare 1966 EP Ready Steady Who (it was later released on the deluxe edition of A Quick One). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNldFQGtfoY I have The Jam's version ranked down here not because of the performance, which is blistering, but because it sticks out like a sore thumb on In the City and messes up its flow. This would have worked better as a B-side, as many of their covers were.

Come on Eileen... initially claimed to be written by Kevin Rowland, Jim Paterson and Billy Adams, although Rowland later stated that the essence of the tune should be attributed to Kevin Archer.

80s New Wave Kroq... my wheelhouse.
Same - lived in L.A. from 1982-1986 and basically listened only to KLOS, KMET and KROQ, Could do without Richard Blade, but KROQ was always top notch.

This is a tough playlist to listen to - there's some real harsh breaks and the music styles are all over the place. The "themes" are likely way better served with individual playlists.

There are some great songs in there - but it's just a bit jarring at times.

About 3/4 of the way through - this might be the most fun "opening" playlist of all the MAD threads.
Kind of fun to try to guess the theme too, as still getting used to the everything and the order. Possum Kingdom came on and I was thinking, oh, that must be for the animal kingdom theme, and then looked at the post and realized for Texas songs.

D Minor - The Saddest Key of All

31 - Spinal Tap - Lick My Love Pump

Lyric -
Nigel: Yeah, it's part of a...trilogy really, a musical trilogy I'm doing...
in... D minor, which I always find is really the saddest of all keys
really. I don't know why, but it makes people weep instantly, you play a..baaaaa...baaaaaa.... it's the horn part.

Source - No direct link.
Sadness Quotient - 11/11
Comment - Yes this is a list based on a one off joke in a 40 year old movie, but in theory its a great idea.
Turns out that D Minor isnt the saddest key of all. But maybe it is.
C Major, E Minor, G Minor, F Major are all in the ballpark as well. Most songs in a Minor Key tend to be more downbeat.
Historically D Minor has the reputation, but as we will see from this, happy songs come from it too

Next Up - Definitely not a sad song. At least musically.

Batman

31 - The Jam - Batman Theme

Relevant Lyric - Batman, Batman, Batman
Batman Vibe Score - 10/10
Where to Find - On the debut album from the Jam
Quick Hit Comment - A very popular theme, covered by so many artists. This is a bit of a nod and wink to the Jam as a previous MAD artist and their interesting take on it

Next Up - One of the biggest Batman associated songs.

Same, would never have connected it with the Texas theme without looking.

Same here. I really appreciate the post with songs and theme in one spot. I keep that open while listening so I can check if I was close or not.

Mrs. Rannous – umlauts

Ride of the Valkyries - Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra
Way too many songs to comment on individually. So lets do a select few
Wheres the Umlauts here?
Im guessing Kunzel or Valkyries
Im also guessing its gonna be a pain writing in umlauts, but it was the choice.
Great “song” to start with.

Don Quixote – Afrobeat

When the Going is Smooth & Good (Spotify) - William Onyeabor (Nigeria)
Did I pick Onyeabor for fixing Tims attempt at a 1977 list or the MAD World draft or both?
Really like this guys vibe
titusbramble – Grand Theft Auto, specifically the 3D era

Japanese Boy - Aneka (VC - Flash FM)
A Scottish woman pretending to be Japanese woman in full dress and everything.
Shed get crucified these days.
I think even she was shocked at how big a hit this became.
shuke – Saxytime

No Easy Street (Spotify) - Psychedelic Furs
Early Furs had a lot of saxophone. Which was odd in an alternative new wave band.
Some of their early stuff is tough to listen to, but the reward is a track list this
Zegras11 – New wave

Come On Eileen - Dexys Midnight Runners
I will only say this once or 17 times, this is better than The Metro?
Definitely was a bigger hit. Quite unique.
As punishments, heres a link to one of his latter album covers

Round the 31st - Die Walküre: Ride of the Valkyries - Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra

I figured I should open with the granddaddy of heavy classics. Those umlauts are visible and essential. (Not always the caase here.) I picked this recording because I like Kunzel and Telarc.

Now available on YouTube.

(And I'm having issues with the site that are hopefully being address by admin, so formatting may be odd for a bit.)

👍 So far I’m enjoying this list more than the artists but I guess that’s not surprising when we start at 31st and there’s generally more available in themed music.

Exact song I’m listening to as I checked the thread. Same thought. Do you wanna die?

If the "Toggle BB Code" feature is disabled you won't have any toolbar functions. (It's the [ ] over beside the save and Preview on the function bar) Not sure how that affects Edit capability tho so maybe your situation is different.

These are disparate takes but they both make sense.

The long sequence in the middle between Clutch and Mogwai actually makes sense together. I loved pretty much everything in that sequence. It's much more disjointed before and after that.

Had a slow day at the office today so made it through all 35.

Of note, I counted 4 instrumentals. Has to be a record for one round.

Anyhoo
I added the following to my Spotify favorites (some songs I knew, some I didn't. I've put an * beside the Knew to me's)

Rhythm of The Rain
* That Man
Change The World
* No Easy Street
Possum Kingdom (Knew the song, was unaware this was the title)
New York, New York (Holds. a special place in my heart as my brother (RIP) and I would sing this Karaoke. Only at family gatherings as I wouldn't punish anyone else with my "singing")
Sirius (Of course, had to take a playlist brake and follow it with Eye in the Sky.)
Come on Eileen
* Your Are Going to Hate This
Here's to Us

All-in-all I'd say not a bad start IMO

A few thoughts on the first playlist:

- I didn't know "Rhythm of the Rain" by title but recognized it when listening. Good song, and the thunder was a great way to start the playlist!
- I also liked the start of "The Silver Ghost" as well as the rest of it. Made my new-to-me favorites playlist.
- @jwb , it seems like both "Possum Kingdom" and "When Your Dream of long song title" would sound especially good on a great sound system. Please report back on this (we have one but I listen to these on my headphones - I'll listen to your playlist in full on the good stereo after we're done).
- ditkaburgers led us to a really fun song as usual with "Where Do You Go."
- The Nickelback song was not nearly as bad as I'd been led to believe they would be.
- MrsKP had a strong rookie showing with "Wild Horses."
- "Not Nineteen Forever," "Magenta Mountain" and especially "Auto Rock" (breathtaking!) rounded out my new-to-me favorites.

The Thin Lizzy was the one I was disappointed I didn't catch. I caught some on a later song from the album, but not this one.

I did almost go with the album closer since is finishes on Journey, but thought set it off started the playlist better.

EFFIN' A!

You are amazing! Thank you, oh god of tech support!

I wondered what I'd clicked wrong. This is why I don't modify the shared lists on our music drafts.

Ilov80s - One song from each of the 31 best albums of 1984

Girl Gone Bad- Van Halen
I forget are these your "best" 31 albums of 1984 or are you working off a list of the 31 best albums from somewhere?
Nope, it's my own list. So there are a couple albums that people would probably expect to see that won't make it. Not that they are bad albums, they just aren't my jam or they just missed the cut. I have ordered them by calendar release, not any kind of ranking.
