Middle Aged Dummies - Artist - Round 3 - #1's have been posted! (1 Viewer)

Love the Bangles track, but why is it on a Hoffs list?
thanks and what?
She didn't write it, and she isn't singing lead.
she's in the band.

She sings in the song. Why does lead matter?
She's just not much in evidence there. And I likes the side-eye, I does.

(I guess I was just expecting her voice.)
I didn't put any Stephen Stills songs in my Neil countdown. I suspect Mrs. R is following the same rationale.

And more Tift Merritt too. Any recommendations on her work, @simey.
I'd start with her sophomore album Tambourine first, then go to her debut album Bramble Rose, and then to her third album Another Country, and then see if you're still interested in exploring more. Andrew Bird shows up on her album Traveling Alone.

Nice. I'm only two songs deep, but yeah she's a keeper. Pretty sure I've overlooked her catalog because I conflated her name with Tif Ginn  . She has one of those magic voices. Reminds me a lot of Charlie Marie.

#17 - Funk It Up (David’s Song)

Notes - This is the weirdest song in the entire Sweet catalog. But it is a tribute to David Bowie due to the artists chameleon like nature. Sweet thought the best way to pay tribute to that was to do a song that no one expected. The first 3 singles from the album stiffed and some brave soul thought they would give it a release in North America. Well at least it charted.

This was great

L.A. Woman

So what do I say? It's my favorite from the band. Just a fantastic song from beginning to end (great driving song too). Jim's baritone is perfect here, and the three musicians are spot on.

Another neat thing about it is Mr Mojo Risin is an anagram for Jim Morrison. According to John's autobiography, it seems like Jim didn't realize it until after he wrote it. I find that a bit hard to believe, but it's still cool. edit - he did know

My friend, David, has the biggest crush on Tift. She signed the Tambourine album for him years ago, and he loves to bring out the album cover and show everyone that his "friend" Tift signed it. She doesn't know who the hell he is, but in his mind they are friends, and he gets a big smile on his face showing off the signed cover.

If that's the case then I'm friends with Iron Maiden,Alice Cooper,Eric Burden and BB King :shades:

I have to admit that was pretty clever of Ole Jimbo.

The Cure's Robert Smith has probably gotten more notoriety for his hair and makeup than for his shredding but he's a great guitarist who's equally adept with a poppy riff and psychedelic freakouts. He gets some amazing sounds out of a relatively simple pedal setup.

To also give credit where it's due, as with most Doors tracks, this one had a bassist in the studio, Jerry Scheff. It also had a rhythm guitarist, Marc Benno.

I knew that wasn't the case because she didn't include them in the "fly back to Seattle" parts. Because I am observant and you are ... not. ;)

These are only the #17s, but I’ll show them love like… well, okay, more like you’ve seen every time before and after. But enough of partially referencing somewhat creepy 80s songs, and onto what I liked best about this playlist.

Selected (and shuffled) #17s
Tumble in the Rough - Stone Temple Pilots. Oh, look, it’s STP leading off the shuffle again
Nothing to Fear (But Fear Itself) - Oingo Boingo
Sunset Soon Forgotten - Iron & Wine
Drive Like Lightnin’ (Crash Like Thunder) - Brian Setzer Orchestra
Funk It Up (David’s Song) - Sweet
Bury It - Chvrches
Get Me Away from Here, I’m Dying - Belle and Sebastian
L.A. Woman - The Doors
Pink in the Night - Mitski
Be Ever Wonderful - Earth, Wind & Fire

Shuffle Adventures:
Around midway, I hit “Question” from The Moody Blues (one of my favorites from them), followed by “Want” from “The Cure” and “Bays of Pigs (Detail)” by Destroyer

Sail On,Sailor- didn't know this song by name or that it was by the Beach Boys
Understandable. It's one of the few Beach Boys hits where the lead singer is someone other than Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson or Mike Love. And it's a little more "rock" than what they normally did after they left the surf sound behind.
Indeed - that’s one of the reasons I picked it because it is different and I really like the energy Blondie Chaplin brought here. There will be a few more rocking tunes ahead from them in addition to their surfy and introspective material..

Fun fact from the Sail On Sailor era:

The band at this time also included Ricky Fataar, who went on to play the George Harrison equivalent Stig O'Hara in Eric Idle's Beatles parody The Rutles.

Good call - Fataar and Chaplin were both playing in a South Africa-based band The Flames. Carl saw them play in London in the early ‘70s and recruited them to fill the gap for Brian and Bruce Johnston.

Interesting that Brian Wilson has said that it’s one of his least favorite Beach Boys songs, but also that it deserves to be included in greatest hits albums and such because “it rocks.”

Conversely, the next one is one of his favorites, albeit also a bit different than most.

It doesn't really rock, though (IMO). It kind of rolls - like waves, in the ocean, lapping against a yacht. The 1st Yacht Roll record?

I think it's this one. Some other records like "Dock Of The Bay" have been grandfathered in, but "Sail On, Sailor" sounds - to me - like the template for a bunch of YR tunes.

I only came across it when someone selected a cover of it in the covers countdown.

Jerry Jeff had a folk background and Bob Bruno, the other singer-songwriter (who wrote and sang this one), had a jazz background, so their disparate influences led to a new kind of mellow sound.

Wind was reflective of the free-flowing style of their live performances. However, I listened to both of their studio albums, and no other tracks stood out as special. They weren't bad for the most part, but they were pretty standard '60s pop fodder.

Wind became a minor hit because it was picked up by some of the then-new "progressive" FM stations. None of their other songs made a commercial impact, and after two albums, Jerry Jeff and Bruno couldn't resolve their musical differences, and the band broke up.

I always assumed it was a yacht rock band like them or a one hit wonder that did the song.

There were a lot of 2nd and 3rd listens in this lot. Primarily because I wanted to, but part because identifying a top 3 was very challenging. The outcome? A non-chalky medal stand!

The 18's

Medal Stand
Gold Fanny- Cat Fever, when Fanny hits, it's hard
Silver Oingo Boingo- No Spill Blood, IT HAPPENED @KarmaPolice !!!
Bronze Sweet- ACDC, two new medal recipients in this loaded round, which is a testament to how strong these offerings were
Honorable Mention1 very much enjoyed the transition from Hoffs to Judas Priest this round
Honorable Mention2 @krista4 patented special shoutout to The Cure who now has a heart! I've heard covers of this before, but never the original. First listen, I enjoyed this more than what I've heard before.
Honorable Mention3 Jerry Jeff Walker also popped his heart-less cherry that sounds way darker than intended. I'm surprised it took this long for him to get one. Not my wheelhouse, but also not that far outside of it.

Medal Count
Tea Party - 2 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze
The Slambovian Circus of Dreams - 2 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze

Known and liked songs from the #17s include Moody Blues (another one of my favorites of theirs, had no idea it was two songs mushed together), Roxy/Ferry (this song appeared both on Roxy's 1972 debut and Ferry's 1976 solo album), Chesney, Beach Boys, The Doors (another favorite of theirs), EWF and April Wine (Nature of the Beast was the only album of theirs I'd heard in full before this countdown).

Thoughts on some of the others:

The River is pretty intense to begin with but then turns it up to 11. More Morrison-isms from The Tea Party's singer.

The Bowie-inspired Sweet song sounds like Fame, especially in the guitars.

The music and lyrics of Nothing to Fear (but Fear Itself) don't really match. Such a creepy protagonist doesn't deserve a track this danceable.

The Grand Slambovians is a rollicking statement of purpose. Is that an electric mandolin? I haven't seen one of those since the days of Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit.

I thought Setzer was giving us a surf rock song at first, but no, it's a car song.

The Gladys/Curtis collaboration is as thrilling as I expected.

Jimi and Stan is a heart-wrenching song. The structure and production is very '80s -- could be an Alarm or Simple Minds outtake.

Mazzy Star is a band very much driven by Hope Sandoval's voice and David Roback's guitar, but I love the use of organ on In the Kingdom.

Bury It is another Chvrches song that sounds like 1989-era Taylor Swift.

Bay of Pigs (Detail) is a tour de force in every way. Excellent deployment of synths, and a hell of a story. Loved these lines: "I was born in the North, but my father's from the South/Love is a political beast with jaws for a mouth".

I would have done a spit-take if I'd been drinking when I heard Albini scream "Never hear the Beastie Boys again!"

Excellent riffage on I Could Have Been a Dreamer.

And I'm finally caught up! For a few hours!

17s added to my favorites, and some thoughts

LA woman - I’m usually love or leave it with the doors. This is a strong love.

Funk it up - just a fun, funky song. I dig.

Question - good sound, but what’s the answer?

On and on - I don’t know their catalog yet but the pips are fantastic

When the world ends - I’m not sure how but I totally forgot about this song

Here today - there’s a reason pet sounds is considered one of the best albums made

Be with you - bangles continue to show that they’re underrated

Bury It - chrvches have been one of the best surprises

Be ever wonderful - love their sound

I'll be pleasantly surprised if Kenny Chesney - Living in Fast Forward gets any shoutouts from this group. It's guitar driven and fiddles its way out, but there may be a bit too much honky tonk for this crowd. With hind sight I should have pegged All The Pretty Girls instead, not because of where they reside with me, but what I'm expecting from this particular audience. Both follow a similar formula and are shallow lyrically, but the latter may be more identifiable. There's some redundancy, which is why I squeezed one out of the 31, but if this choice wasn't your jam, I urge you to give the alternate a shot. For me, both hit the spot while chilling at the beach Friday afternoon, which is why I've fallen behind again :banned:
Chesney has some catchy songs and I find myself listening to more and more of his stuff. I like both these songs.
