So what do I say? It's my favorite from the band. Just a fantastic song from beginning to end (great driving song too). Jim's baritone is perfect here, and the three musicians are spot on.

I think it's this one. Some other records like "Dock Of The Bay" have been grandfathered in, but "Sail On, Sailor" sounds - to me - like the template for a bunch of YR tunes.

Understandable. It's one of the few Beach Boys hits where the lead singer is someone other than Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson or Mike Love. And it's a little more "rock" than what they normally did after they left the surf sound behind.

I only came across it when someone selected a cover of it in the covers countdown.

Jerry Jeff had a folk background and Bob Bruno, the other singer-songwriter (who wrote and sang this one), had a jazz background, so their disparate influences led to a new kind of mellow sound.

Wind was reflective of the free-flowing style of their live performances. However, I listened to both of their studio albums, and no other tracks stood out as special. They weren't bad for the most part, but they were pretty standard '60s pop fodder.

Wind became a minor hit because it was picked up by some of the then-new "progressive" FM stations. None of their other songs made a commercial impact, and after two albums, Jerry Jeff and Bruno couldn't resolve their musical differences, and the band broke up.

I always assumed it was a yacht rock band like them or a one hit wonder that did the song.

Known and liked songs from the #17s include Moody Blues (another one of my favorites of theirs, had no idea it was two songs mushed together), Roxy/Ferry (this song appeared both on Roxy's 1972 debut and Ferry's 1976 solo album), Chesney, Beach Boys, The Doors (another favorite of theirs), EWF and April Wine (Nature of the Beast was the only album of theirs I'd heard in full before this countdown).

Thoughts on some of the others:

The River is pretty intense to begin with but then turns it up to 11. More Morrison-isms from The Tea Party's singer.

The Bowie-inspired Sweet song sounds like Fame, especially in the guitars.

The music and lyrics of Nothing to Fear (but Fear Itself) don't really match. Such a creepy protagonist doesn't deserve a track this danceable.

The Grand Slambovians is a rollicking statement of purpose. Is that an electric mandolin? I haven't seen one of those since the days of Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit.

I thought Setzer was giving us a surf rock song at first, but no, it's a car song.

The Gladys/Curtis collaboration is as thrilling as I expected.

Jimi and Stan is a heart-wrenching song. The structure and production is very '80s -- could be an Alarm or Simple Minds outtake.

Mazzy Star is a band very much driven by Hope Sandoval's voice and David Roback's guitar, but I love the use of organ on In the Kingdom.

Bury It is another Chvrches song that sounds like 1989-era Taylor Swift.

Bay of Pigs (Detail) is a tour de force in every way. Excellent deployment of synths, and a hell of a story. Loved these lines: "I was born in the North, but my father's from the South/Love is a political beast with jaws for a mouth".

I would have done a spit-take if I'd been drinking when I heard Albini scream "Never hear the Beastie Boys again!"

Excellent riffage on I Could Have Been a Dreamer.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if Kenny Chesney - Living in Fast Forward gets any shoutouts from this group. It's guitar driven and fiddles its way out, but there may be a bit too much honky tonk for this crowd. With hind sight I should have pegged All The Pretty Girls instead, not because of where they reside with me, but what I'm expecting from this particular audience. Both follow a similar formula and are shallow lyrically, but the latter may be more identifiable. There's some redundancy, which is why I squeezed one out of the 31, but if this choice wasn't your jam, I urge you to give the alternate a shot. For me, both hit the spot while chilling at the beach Friday afternoon, which is why I've fallen behind again

Chesney has some catchy songs and I find myself listening to more and more of his stuff. I like both these songs.
