Middle Aged Dummies - Artist - Round 3 - #1's have been posted! (8 Viewers)

Guess we're throwing hands (bands) out now.
I get it if people want to stake claim on something they know might take a bit to dig through.
Probably the case for me, although I didn't want to jump the gun yet.
I could be off base here, but I don't think it's a huge deal if people are talking about what artists or genres they are doing. If I would have to guess, zegras just doesn't want this to be the official declarations and have to dig through multiple pages here to fill in people's selections. I think some early chatter and artist declarations helps others focus their search as well.
Yeah, I will repost when the official thread opens. I doubt I’d have much competition for my choice, but I can take another artist if so. Hell - Mrs R posted her next choice like 6 years ago 😄

Ive been circling around your choice for a bit and have started a personal playlist. I got scared off a bit by my lack of knowledge and what albums might or might not be on Spotify to do a MAD31. They have been high on my wishlist for someone else to do for this, though.

What a crazy finish. As it played out, order mattered. Fanny also made a late run, with an epic finish, but there weren't any other standouts in the final round to displace Tea Party, who slipped in at the last moment to take the crown.

The 1's

Medal Stand
Gold Fanny- Young & Dumb
Silver Tea Party- Sun Going Down
Bronze The Bangles- Walk Like An Egyptian

But above all else, I'm thrilled with all the new music added to my catalogue. Before we started, I knew DMB and STP would be near the top, but would new sounds invade their space? And that was the case with 3 of the tightly packed top 5. Special shoutouts to both Oingo Boingo and The Circus too. I believe hearts were dolled out to everyone at some point, but those 5 stood out to me. Looking forward to the next one :suds:

Medal Count
Tea Party - 5 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze (19)
DMB- 4 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze (18)
Fanny - 4 gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze (18)
STP - 3 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze (16)
Blue October - 3 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze (16)
The Doors - 3 gold, 1 silver (11)
The Beach Boys - 2 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze (11)
The Slambovian Circus of Dreams - 2 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze (10)
Mazzy Star - 2 gold, 1 bronze (7)
Oingo Boingo - 1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze (6)
Susanna Hoffs - 1 gold, 3 bronze (6)

Laugh emoji.

I'm not getting any younger. And Brian Setzer had about 30 albums. That took real time.

I know we have had the Beasties, but nothing else in the genre, right? What is the groups' feeling on hip hop/rap on the playlist?
Your list, your call. It's not my thing, but I'm always willing to explore new artists/genres.
I get that, but i also don't want to put too much time in a playlist many will dislike or skip. I don't like a ton, but I have considered a couple artists i think could be interesting for the MAD31s. I lean more Tribe Called Quest, Outkast type of stuff.

If you want them, feel free. George Clinton’s legal status changes by the minute. I actually check with Pip a few days ago since I don’t Spotify to see what’s blocked and what’s not. As of this post, only the late 70s Funkadelic albums aren’t available, but some of the individual songs have slipped through the cracks. Let me know if you want them. I have a bunch of ways I can go, so no sweat on my end.

I’ll echo that looking forward to the Funkadelic. Was not thinking about them for this purpose and had not start a playlist or anything, but had been working some of their stuff into my rotation recently, and looking forward to listening to a deeper dive.

No, i am not close with them as a possible option this quick. More my long winded way of saying what artists others might be staring at as well.

Are we putting claims in for round 4 already?
Not officially. Zegras has said he would keep doing these, and people have mentioned here and there they are narrowing down possibilities for a part 4. I think Mrs. R is the only one to officially state who she is doing.
I’ll officially say if we start in November, Lindsey Stirling is my choice.
Ok, put me down for The Clash then.
:ptts:

I’m sitting under a full moon in Mexico drinking Xtabentun. God help you all (and Krista’s cats), for I claim Parliament Funkadelic the next round. Free your mind and your *** will follow
You're going to make my funk the P-funk, aren't you?

Since we're now revealing our next artist, I guess I'll announce mine. For round 4, please welcome the lovely and talented...Whitney Houston!
I thought about doing Go-Go music, which I know you’d be aware of.

Maybe we can do a team up for round 5. You do Chuck Brown and I'll do E.U.

FWIW, I was thiiiiiis close to selecting Bootsie Collins as my artist this round.

I totally thought someone had done them. :bag:

I wasn’t expecting BO to compete with the legends, glad someone else enjoyed their list!

I know we have had the Beasties, but nothing else in the genre, right? What is the groups' feeling on hip hop/rap on the playlist?
Quality is quality. Some cypress, de la soul, Eminem, etc would be okay with me

But I’m going classical - ish for the next list. There will be some light rap involved.

These were two I had on my short list.

Not sure if I’ll be able to do a list this round, though. Might not have the bandwidth.

The Tea Party got a much better reception than I thought they would. I feel like if they had better representation (or would have accepted Trent Reznor’s offer to produce an album), they would have had much wider exposure.

I think I know who I’m going with for round 4. A much better known indie band (with I think the best drummer of the century so far) but a deep dive will most likely introduce a lot of great new songs.

Also between fantasy football and ranking sandwiches I did not have a lot of time to respond to playlists. My personal medal standings are

Gold: Chvrches
Silver: Oingo Boingo
Bronze: DMB

Chvrches is right in my wheelhouse and I have no idea I never discovered them before. Probably my favorite discovered band in all of these countdowns. Same with Oingo Boingo. Got a lot new 80s favorites there. DMB I already knew but kind of lost interest after BTCS. This introduced me to more recent stuff I now like. I’ve also been listening to the Sirius DMB channel a lot while out driving recently.

I'd be up for it - but you can't please everyone.

There's probably an artist already announced that I don't think I have interest in, but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.
I get that the bolded is impossible, but if people also don't want it on there because they try to listen at work or other environments (on top of being a genre the group doesn't gravitate to), that is another consideration.

As we head into a Part 4, I've been thinking that I had a little more fun with my Dino and Oingo playlists with the group due to a couple reasons: they were newer discoveries for me, and they were bands in general I thought the group would be more likely to click with. Mastodon was more for me and something I just happen to reconnect with, but probably not as good of a MAD31 choice if that makes sense.

My part 4 artist was much more in the Mastodon camp, which caused me to probably pivot yet again off them. There are a couple rap artists that fit the bill with what I want more, which is why I was asking, but I have a lot of other options as well. I have the most fun when it's an artist that is new to me or made me get over a bias, has a variety of phases or sounds, and I think could introduce the group to a new artist or songs. If I can find a book on them that would be a big bonus, as that was what I was missing for Dino and Oingo - I wish I read more about them.

Don't overthink it...pick a band/artist you want to share. Some will like the music. Some will not. If some skip your selection, you'll never really know anyway and my bet is that will be few and far between. This seems to be a pretty open minded crowd for music. Outside of Rush of course.

The bolded is not possible with me.

My part 4 artist will probably be unknown to most of this group. They have a connection to my hometown and my round2 artist. In 2021 they became the first female fronted rock band to have 7 #1 singles.
The first person who correctly guesses who it is will win an all expenses paid trip to wherever they currently are.
Paramore? I forget what your round 2 artist was.

Edit - I see it was Chris Cornell.

Nope. Round 2 was Chris Cornell.
