Middle Aged Dummies!! Artists #1's have been posted!! (3 Viewers)

If @krista4 doesn't like my #3 Spoon song then I give up.

Wait, what? I loved it. And I have 14 Spoon songs on my "new-to-me favorites" playlist after having listened only to 26 playlists so far.

ETA: And sorry, I'm five days behind on reading comments.

Oh, I just meant it was the most "Beatlesque" song in this draft (a draft that included ELO, so there's that!!).

To me it has a lot of "Cry Baby Cry", Sgt. Pep. and a little "Day in the Life"

Here is an acoustic version that is amazing.

the Raiders will be Super Bowl contenders soon
No, we definitely want a round 2.
How 'bout September artist submission?
If he knows, Zegrass can comment more. It seems most would like a little breathining room. IMO something like 3-4 weeks sounds about right, but I am also not that busy.

Maybe: within a week we start submitting artists, deadline for artist decision is the 31st, lists due by the 15th with countdown starting Sunday the 17th? Not sure how that plays for Zegrass or the masses though.

I'm mainly just thinking if I need to F5 like a maniac lest the selection starts imminently and there's a bunch of time just to compile lists, or if there's going to be a decent break before the same. I'm not fussed if there is a fair chunk of time before we even think about reloading, I'm pretty busy myself these next few weeks, if peoples involved need a break then obviously take it

I would like to submit artists before that — the artist that I have in mind, I want to go all-in on not just discography, but documentaries, books, etc. Was just looking at an autobiography on Amazon today.

Obviously okay with having plenty of time between that and song submissions for Round 2. Mostly just don’t want to start using some of my time to immerse and then find out, not necessarily a waste as will have been time well spent, but maybe could have used that time elsewhere.

Also, while I do want to post a quick review of my 1-3 and some live videos, here's the "making of Voodoo People" video I said I would post:

While it's clearly not exactly the same (the guitars were played live, not sampled from Nirvana's In Utero for one), it should give people some idea of the level of work that Liam would have done in terms of making the track - bearing in mind this video was created 10+ years ago with a heck of a lot better computer assistance than was available at the time (if you had a PC that could play Doom when Voodoo People was released, let alone written, you were doing alright), if anything useful was available at all. It also goes into some depth as to the level of sampling that goes on in the creation of many dance records - not that artists are completely reliant on it, as I hope the live tracks I select will demonstrate

I honestly would prefer to immerse myself in some of the playlists from round 1.
My plan of attack to listen to these failed with two separate approaches.
My third way will be just to review full lists and rerank as many as I can

As for round 2, sheeet, i have a short list of 8 artists already that are fit for public consumption. 4 others, not so much
Might break out my secret identity to do one of each, but no hurry.

I need a little break before the next one. Only about 2/3rds through the last playlist and still want to listen to a few of the full ones.
Plus it's fantasy draft season and I'm way behind on my research and prep for those.

Oh and screw you, @Pip's Invitation , for making me cry tonight.

I’m catching up on the round 2 list right now. I’m in New York now moving my daughter back into college. We live in CA, so I probably won’t see her until December (unless we’re lucky and she can make it back for thanksgiving).

Anyway, I held myself together pretty well all day. Especially compared to her first year last year when I was a blubbering idiot. Then I got in my rental car to drive away from campus by myself and what pops up on the playlist right away? Make Me Smile by Chicago. I was a complete mess.

When my daughter was born, I went home to take care of my two year old son while my wife and daughter stayed at the hospital and this was the first song that came on the radio on the way home. I blasted the volume and sung this song at the top of my lungs with the windows down. Since then it’s always been her song for me. I’M SO HAPPY!!! (I know that’s not what the songs about but I didn’t care).

Perfect time for a perfect song. :crying: ♥️:crying:

Reiterate all the thanks to zegras and KarmaPolice - great few months of a fun. Already have a playlist set for the next one, so death stares if anyone grabs up a certain niche punk band.

I haven't had a chance to listen to the #1s yet but wanted to shout out a few highlights for me from the thread:

Favorite New-to-Me Artist - Not sure how I remained completely ignorant of them, but I'm totally enamored of The Decemberists. Not only will I be downloading the playlists but will make grabbing all their vinyl a priority over the coming months.

New-to-Me Artist Runner Ups - Most definitely Big Thief - absolutely love the vocals - and The Tragically Hip, who I totally wrote off in the mid-90s after hearing one song I really disliked on late-night radio.

Artists Who I Knew a Bit That I'm Excited to Revisit - Ill definitely be downloading the playlists for Brandi Carlile, Spoon, and ...Trail of the Dead.

Top-Notch Rankings of Bands I Already Loved -
I looked forward every-other day to hearing what was next in line for Modest Mouse, Dinosaur Jr., and Bauhaus. Great job with your lists!

Not My Speed But Really Impressed - I never paid any attention to Taylor Swift b/c I figured her music wasn't meant for me. I guess it's not, but that doesn't change how good it is.

Not in My Usual Catalog But How Can You Not Love? - I didn't grow up listening to Stevie Wonder or Ray Charles and never really dove in (though I always liked what I heard). There was maybe one song out of the 62 from Stevie and Ray that I didn't like (and even then, I didn't actually dislike it). So post those playlists in the spreadsheet, please!

Band I Didn't Know I Loved (At Least in One Iteration) - I thought I had heard enough AC/DC for a lifetime but I guess that's b/c classic rock radio and SiriusXM just keep pumping out the same five songs. I wrote earlier that Dirty Deeds... was the first LP I ever bought (and I still have it!) but will be on the lookout for more Bon Scott-era AC/DC in the used bins.

Band I'll No Longer Reflexively Skip on SiriusXM - Unless I see the track is over 10 minutes long, I'll start giving Chicago a chance when I'm flipping stations.

I am curious from the Dino fans - what was the glaring omissions, if any from my playlist? As I posted, I'd guess the answer will generally start from more off You're Living All over Me, but that is mostly just based on scanning album rankings online and what they focus on when playing live.
A quick scan of songs I've liked in my music app reveal these missing from your playlist. Not saying you should have included them, but they are good.

The guitar solo at the end of We're Not Alone is one of my favorites, and the one near the beginning of Just Like Heaven is something to hear.

Agree. Would like to choose artists early, but then allow plenty of time to deep dive. I also need plenty of time to catch up on round one playlists too.

I've seen Dino maybe a dozen times, which puts them among the top 5 or 6 on that list, and probably helps explain why I have so many hearing/ear problems. Just an amazing live band. On the other hand, aside from my favorite songs (which you covered), their stuff tends to blend together for me. I love their overall sound but don't necessarily pay a ton of attention to the details.

I feel like it may help to have all the playlists in one place to be easier to find. To that end, I have created a Google sheet and thought maybe you can add your link to it, @Zegras11 can put the link on the first post and it'll be one-stop shopping? If not, then I guess you can use the sheet to find my AC/DC playlist if you are so inclined :)

I posted this earlier. Just need people to put their playlist links in the sheet and @Zegras11 to put the link to the sheet in the first post.

Not sure if others are interested, but I think another column for Album Suggestion would be cool. The one you would recommend to people for a deep dive.

I'm going to go down the list of playlists and listen to most in order they are submitted. Some, like ac/DC and AiC at the top I'm going to listen to an album instead since I am quite familiar with most on their playlist.

I'm listening to High Voltage now and for Alice I think the album was Rainier Fog?

I am typing from my phone again. I can see the modem across the room and it is lit up so wifi is back. I feel like poop, though, and i will complete my link task another day. I feel very unwell.

My mom had a 85th birthday family get together for my dad Sunday. To make it short my brother spread a stomach virus, and I started feeling bad this morning. I turned into the pukemeister, and couldn't hold anything down most of the day. My legs ache and earlier kept cramping, but I couldn't hold water or anything down. I have a fever, and I took some tylenol 30 minutes ago with small sips, and this time it is staying down so far although it makes me feel nauseous. I haven't felt this bad in a long time. Beware of this stomach thing. Tomorrow is a new day, and I hope to be on the upswing.

Feel better.

What school in NY?

And good luck with the move - enjoy the precious time you have.
Cornell - she loves it there.
Very impressive - really beautiful campus/area. If you haven’t already, try to spend some time in the Finger Lakes up there.
Yeah it beautiful up here - love coming here with her.

Damon Albarn song #1

Blur - "Out of Time" from Think Tank (2003)

Blur was coming apart at the seams when they prepared to enter the studio to record what would become Think Tank. Albarn had released the first Gorillaz album in 2001 and Graham Coxon had solo projects of his own. Coupled with the usual rock star ego, substance abuse, stress and depression issues, it was enough to break up the band. It wasn't a particularly acrimonious split as bands go, Graham just didn't show up for the recording sessions and the band went on without him.

Blur eventually decamped to Marakesh to finish recording. They enlisted the Groupe Regional du Marrakech to provide North African string accompaniment that gives "Out of Time" its exotic flavor. The lyrics are more apocalyptic visions from Damon but can also serve as an elegy for the initial run of the band.

"Out of Time" isn't a song that normally appears on Blur's best songs lists but I've loved since the first time I heard it during the file sharing era. In a way it kind of sums up Albarn's long and diverse career. It came out as a Blur single but it wouldn't appear out of place on an album by any of his other bands--well maybe not Rocket Juice & the Moon but I didn't rank anything by them. It also features a nice modal guitar solo by Damon. Legend has it that when Blur reunited for shows in 2009, Coxon had trouble playing the parts because he's right-handed while Damon is a southpaw.

Live performance: Damon Albarn and The Orchestra of Syrian Musicians (2016)

I don’t have it in me to do a more extensive writeup of the 2s, but I wanted to call out a few wow moments for me (aside from my Chicago induced cry fest).

Lots of top ranked known to me and really great new to me songs, sorry to not call them all out - you can assume yours is on there and like my post as if it was.

Daft Punk - had no idea what this was or where it was going at first but once this got going it blew me away.

Stranglers - this was the second song by them that I have loved for a while that I had no idea was the Stranglers.

Simon & Garfunkel - I had to listen to this one 3 times in a row. It was amazing! I wish it was much longer (is there a non-single exit?).

Tragically Hip - Wow - also got a relisten. I closed my eyes to listen to this one. It’s songs like this that make me keep doing these drafts.

Thank you all for the tremendous work here everyone! I’ll do my best to give some thoughts on the 1s after I listen to them. I’ll be posting my playlist tomorrow night.

For those that know Jesus of Suburbia nothing needs to be written about it. For those that don't know Jesus of Suburbia after a 9 minute listen nothing needs to be written about it. It's a generational track and I never second guessed it's place on my rankings...but others? Well, I'm gonna share my actual Green Day 31 (okay, 40) with how they rolled out in this playlist in () and I'll include the snubs.

1. Jesus of Suburbia (1)
2. Hitchin A Ride- live (2)
3. Longview (3)
4. Homecoming (4)

These^^^ 4 never changed (in order) from day 1

5. 21st Century Breakdown (6) - with hind sight this shoulda been 5
6. Brain Stew/Jaded (9)
7. Are We the Waiting/St Jimmy (13) - I realized on vacation w the kids I had this too low
8. FOD (11)
9. Holiday (8)

with hind sight this was tier break #2 - there were a few derps here, but oh well

10. Minority (5) - shoulda been 6, but I over ranked it to flow better
11. Letterbomb (10)
12. Welcome To Paradise (12)
13. Burnout (15)
14. Walking Contradiction (7) - I realized soon after we started I had the wrong Insomniac track in the top 10, oh well
15. Going to Pasalacqua- live (14)
16. Paper Lanters (19) - needed to break up the pre Dookie Green Day on the playlist
17. Panic Song (17)
18. Platypus (23) - the most violent song in the Green Day catalog fit better later

3 months later I think this band has a very clear top 18 in my catalog, so I really only kinda biffed on one ranking.

19. Basket Case (snub) - I hadn't listened to this song in a very long time and didn't really give it a thought before we started. As the summer has worn on I've come to realize I just needed a break from it cause this really is the perfect pop-punk song.
20. East Jesus Nowhere- live (16)
21. American Eulogy (18)
22. Horseshoes & Hand Grenades (20)
23. Restless Heart Syndrome (21)
24. Viva La Gloria (22)
25. Peacemaker (30) - 3 21st Century Breakdown cuts in a row were intentional, but 6 woulda been ridiculous...plus I wanted this one very early to get the attention of some of those who weren't sure if they were really interested in more Green Day
26. American Idiot (snub) - this was my last cut, I thought the 7 below in () were too important not to add
27. Geek Stink Breath (snub) - I thought adding Brat was more important as it is more smartass than just plain nasty like this one
28. Brat (29)
29. Bab's Uvala Who (unranked) - I think Brat's a more accessible track, so if you hit that heart I strongly recommend giving this one a shot too (and other 2 minute tracks on Insomniac)
30. Macy's Day Parade (28)
31. King For A Day/Shout- live (26)
32. She (25)

This is the last tier break - it was very hard to leave those unranked listed above out (except for Basket Case - derp). Below it was more important for me to play the role of intro rather than prioritizing my rankings.

33. The Grouch (unranked) - for those that enjoyed the immaturity of Knowledge below give this one a shot too. I figured that'd be a better crowd pleaser.
34. Knowledge (27)
35. Know Your Enemy (unranked) - when I started this thing I figured either this or Idiot would make the cut, but not both, and quickly opted against this one. Good song; it's just Idiot is better.
36. Revolution Radio (unranked) - when I started this thing I figured I'd add one song released after 2009, but I thought adding the below 2 were more important. For those still reading, this is a good album that I endorse listening to, but for the love of God skip Father of All and Uno/Dos/Tres.
37. Whatsername (24)
38. Misery (31)
39. JAR (unranked) - for those unfamiliar and love the Dookie sound I strongly endorse this track
40. Take Back (unranked) - while Platypus is the most violent song in their catalog, this is probably the most hard core. Really, this spot could belong to any tracks #11-15 on Nimrod, but this one's so far outside the box it stands out to me.

A few songs

Honorable mention1. Blvd of Broken Dreams - as I mentioned in my post no one reads (hi @krista4 ) I never skip this song in the context of the album, but I never listen to it by itself
Honorable mention2. When I Come Around - classic pop-punk track, but never a top 31 consideration for me

Some more songs

Meh. Good Riddance - some people hate this, I don't, but I also never seek it out

A lot of songs

Gblargh. Wake Me Up When September Ends - American Idiot may be a perfect album if this song weren't on it

All of the songs

Kill it with fire. 21 Guns - ...and this is (MUCH!!!) worse than September

Sure. Its fully editable so feel free to add any other columns you think.

High voltage is a great album. I had 6 songs off that one although a few I linked the live version off If you Want Blood. Powerage is another less common one that has a number of solid rockers.

I know I missed out on the 2nd half of the playlists but I am excited to dig into the individual band playlists. Sometimes listening to the countdowns was too much whiplash in styles and I struggled to find a groove or some artists just weren't hitting my mood for that moment. Easier to get into a flow if it's all one artist.

If anyone can help me out with a play list please do (no spotify premium) and while I intend to give several a full spin beginning-to-end to find out how many hearts I actually took away from this exercise, below is my knee jerk based on the heart smashes documented since we started:

*Best new artist - as great as Big Thief was this was not Belinda Carlisle by a country mile
*Biggest surprise - Heart. I went into this thing thinking I loved the half dozen or so songs I already had by them and had no interest in any more. I's wrong.
*A lil bit from column A (new) and a lil bit from column B (surprise) - T Swift. Wow.
*I expected to like them and I did (a lot) - ...Trail of Dead
*Thank you for adding even more to my library - Spoon and Modest Mouse
*I need to listen to more - Decemberists, Stranglers, Frank Black, that Damon guy, and Clutch
*Random note - neither Bruce nor Foo Fighters were gonna get a special shout out (patent pending) from me because how much I already had, but I greatly appreciated how much was offered that wasn't already in my catalog
*Lastly, while I knew I liked 70's Chicago more than 80's Chicago I had no idea how deep their catalog was. Holy ****, thank you Pip.

I think the only Taylor Swift songs I knew coming into this were Shake it Off (?) and the version of Anti-Hero w/Bleachers that Spotify put in my release radar for roughly 100 straight weeks.
Liked a lot of what I heard.
Despite the few pop contributions that hit my ears (i.e. Shake It Off) I still had her pegged as a commercial country artist.

...uhhhh...

Random thoughts on new-to-me and forgotten #1s:
These songs are totally epic and I will be listening to them again: Edit the Sad Parts, Texas Flood, Popplagio, One More Time, 21 Reasons, Spacegrass, I Don't Wanna Go There, Let There Be Rock, Killer Parties, Words, Voodoo People, Double Dare
Hold Out Your Hand is gripping.
Calamity Jane is indeed very REM-ish.
My favorite Big Thief songs have been the ones with Neil-ish guitar playing, and Not is another one of those.
Dear Reader could be interpreted as Taylor questioning her vaunted status: "You should find another / Guiding light / But I shine so bright."
Between the Bars is haunting.
No More Heroes makes great use of keys for a "punk" band.
If someone asked me what "Americana" sounds like, I might play Come Pick Me Up.
Desperadoes under the Eaves has a rawness that Jackson Browne couldn't fathom. "Don't the sun look angry at me" sums up Zevon's outlook as good as anything.
Out of Time has a broader musical palette than what I've come to expect from Blur, though it makes sense that it's post-Gorillaz.
Don't You Evah is quite the earworm.
Friend of a Friend, despite not being noisy at all, may be the most Nirvana-like Foo song. Its structure and melody sound quite a bit like Cobain's mellower stuff.
Alone with You has a spectacular buildup.

Is there a spreadsheet of everyone's picks?

:goodposting: shuke mentioned it became a little bit of a slog, and I felt the same way. Sometimes it was just too much to take in on each playlist for me. Not a criticism but an acknowledgement of my own limitations. :) I'm going to drill down into the playlists for the artists I loved here, plus work my way through my 300+ new-to-me favorites I've already saved, and then on the next one I'll just wait for the full artist playlists.

So soon, I'll be asking everyone for their Round 2 artist selections. I will allow 7 days for people to give me those, Binky change his mind in those 7 days, 62 times.

How long after that 7 day period ends should I allow for people to create their 31 song lists? (20 minimum again)

2 weeks? 3 weeks? more?

Well, we’re at the top (at least for the majority of people)! So it might be easier to list the songs I didn’t like. But far less fun!. So then. Selected, but not shuffled, as I had to listen to this in a few parts. A few more large-ish posts before I can feel like things are more or less wrapped up, but that’ll be after I sleep.

*Open My Eyes - Nazz (/Todd Rundgren)
*Taj Mahal - Jorge Ben Jor. Rod Stewart stole this sound, right? *searches* Oh, wow, I was mostly kidding, but there was an actual settlement.
*Hold Out Your Hand - Brandi Carlile. Starts soft, then grabs young about 40 seconds in. Part country, part symphonic.
*Calamity Song - The Decemberists
*Not - Big Thief
*25 or 6 to 4 - Chicago. I’d be okay with this being #1 even if you included the “sappy” era, and I know I’m not alone there.
*No More Heroes - The Stranglers
*Run Runaway - Slade.
*21 Reasons - Frank Black & the Catholics
*I Don’t Wanna Go There - Dinosaur Jr.
*Desperados Under the Eaves - Warren Zevon
*Let There Be Rock - AC/DC
*What’d I Say, Pt. 1 & 2 - Ray Charles
*Don’t You Evah - Spoon

“Doesn’t Need My Praise But Have a Mention Anyway” Section:
*Synchronicity II - The Police
*You Got Really Me - The Kinks
*2112 - Rush
*Do It Again - Steely Dan
*One More Time - Daft Punk
*Living For The City - Stevie Wonder
*Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel

then on the next one I'll just wait for the full artist playlists.
About half way through Round 1, that's what I decided to do. I would fully listen to all the songs from those artists I really liked and a few new ones I liked. But there's like another ten new artists to me that I really liked and I decided to wait til now and listen to their entire list to get a much fuller experience of that artist.
