Middle Aged Dummies!! Artists #1's have been posted!! (3 Viewers)

I had Hells Bells really early to set the mood. :) didn't fully rank mine although the last 4 are pretty much my favorites.
I remember it showing up early in the countdown, but couldn't remember where. It is a good mood setter. I love the intro to it.

Did a deep dive on the Ryan Adams playlist today. Great stuff.
Unfortunately, I did a deep dive on his personal and legal issues. Wish i hadn't. For all the talent, dude is a massive creep.
Yeah...well...Craig Finn jaywalks and once pulled that tag off his mattress.
Yeah, sorry. Not sure why I felt the need to type that out last night. NYT had some of the text messages and it was just too much for my gummy-addled brain to process.

Is there an official or semi-official plan for round 2?
Fcfs for artists, and Zegrass will let us now when to start letting him know artists soon.
Fcfs?
First come, first served.
I’m sleeping outside of Zegrass’ house overnight so I can get first choice.
On ze grass or on ze driveway?

(I’ll see myself out)
:lmao: beat me to it.

Thinking on the next round. What are the rules for artist involvement in the songs we pick? Specifically, would a song fit in the list if the artist I pick has a major songwriting credit but does not actually perform?

I'd vote no. Seems like that opens the door to producer, session musician, etc.

MAybe we could draw the line at songwriting, because this artist would be a lot of fun if so.

Oh well, in that case ...

I struggle with being a fan at times as well. He is a jerk.

Leaving for LA in an hour. Be back Sunday at noon.
I’ll be watching you.

At the expense of spotlighting, I had thought of doing songs with Steve Lukather doing session work. Or even the Wrecking Crew, although I had a ton of those with Simon & Garfunkel

This was a really fun exercise and a great way to dig deeper into this band as well as all the others selected. Here are my final selections.

I don’t see an issue with songwriters or session players, or even producers… enjoy a good deep dive into people associated with the music industry, no matter their role. There are a number of musicians that I feel like the only way to do their career and full body of work justice would be to include producer work too. While I hesitate to spotlight anyone under consideration by anyone (and he is not currently under mine because I don’t think I could pull it off), but stick something like a playlist of Nile Rodgers’ career straight into my veins.

Just my two cents though.

I agree. Although I’d think if someone had the artist recording the song, they’d have preference to “claim” the song. For example, if I had Sinead O’Connor as my artist, I wouldn’t want the person ranking Prince songs to take the Sinead version of Nothing Compares 2U on their list. A Prince version of the song would be fine, just not the version done by Sinead.

Selling England by the Pound (1973) - 6
A Trick of the Tail (1976) - 6
Nothing from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway at all, huh. I know you said you weren't going to include the title track, but I wasn't expecting a complete shutout.
Yeah, for some reason that album never did it for me. I guess I’ll have to give it another chance at some point.
It's definitely a challenge, but I figured over 90 minutes there would be SOMETHING that thrilled you. I had 3 songs from it in my top 31, which is less than each of the four Chicago double albums contributed to my top 31 there.

I do think it is the weakest of the run from Trespass to A Trick of the Tail.

Yeah, I should have given it more of a chance in this process rather than writing off the whole album.

I finally listened to the #2 playlist.

Excluding my own song, I already knew that I liked these songs:
  • Police - Message In A Bottle
  • SRV - Pride And Joy
  • Rush - YYZ - my favorite Rush song
  • ELO - Hold On Tight
  • Alice In Chains - Down In A Hole
  • AC/DC - Back In Black
  • Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc.
  • Ray Charles - Georgia On My Mind
  • Spoon - I Summon You
  • Bruce - Tenth Avenue Freeze Out
  • Heart - Magic Man
  • Elton John - Rocket Man
Once I listened to them, I realized I knew and liked these songs, just didn't remember them by name:
  • Chicago - Make Me Smile
  • Chicago - Now More Than Ever
On first listen to this playlist, these were the unfamiliar songs I liked the best:
  • Brandi Carlile - The Story
  • Modest Mouse - The Good Times Are Killing Me
  • Sigur Rós - Hoppípolla
  • Doves - There Goes The Fear
  • The Prodigy - Breathe
  • The Tragically Hip - Ahead By A Century
As expected, this is a great playlist. Best yet for me.

I have been putting the songs I identify in these posts in a spreadsheet. I'm up to 282 songs. So far that group of songs includes at least one song from 42 of the 45 artists in the countdown other than mine.

Yeah one very obvious omission from that album (not including title track) but obviously these lists are subjective.

Started looking into who I’m hoping to rank in the next round, and that one’s going to be tough. Might have to make some rules for myself to limit how much I’ll have to work with.

I tackled @Pip's Invitation's cheating top 40 list yesterday too. ;) Broken record and all, but Chicago was one of the best surprises for me in this playlist. Smart move by you kicking off the adventure with Hideaway and reeling in the dopes like me who had an ignorant view of Chicago based on the few sappy hits I heard. After I get through more playlists, I have them marked to try a couple full albums as well. I'm open to suggestions there too. No surprise coming from me that a couple of the rockers were my personal favorites. I really dug Hideaway and Poem 58. I've listened to Saturday in the Park enough that my 8yo let on a little groan when it came on yesterday again. Top to bottom there wasn't anything I actively disliked, and really liked way more than I thought I would - thanks again for the playlist!

I have my artist for round 2 and I am pretty confident no one will take them. However, I am a little unsure of what the reaction will be to them. They have a very wide range of sounds, some radio stuff but a lot of things that have not been on the radio. I am curious and nervous at this same time, because I am a newb to the music threads and my appreciation of music isn't near as deep as some.

If the person is concentrating on Prince the artist, definitely no Sinead, but if they are concentrating on Prince the songwriter then it should be, but zegras can sort all that stuff out lol

Did you see some of the artists the first go round? As long as you love the artist, roll with it. Bound to be at least a couple that roll with you. Maybe more. Plus your love and enthusiasm for an artist shines through and people appreciate positive passion.

If you are looking for approval, do Radiohead, The Strolling Bones or Kate Bush

Your Queen list was very cool.

This morning at work it was @Raging weasel 's Clutch contribution to the playlist. It's fitting I was listening to it at work - years ago we had a guy working there that was a knob about music and would basically only listen to Clutch and Tool. Would chastise anyone who didn't dig it also, and would refer to them whenever anything else remotely heavy came on. It's a joke around there still to this day, and anybody who asks if they can play music in the kitchen we will reply "only if it's Clutch or Tool". Long story short, it's why they have always been in the background, but nothing I felt the urge to explore on my own. I am going to be listening to Blast Tyrant after I get through playlists. Loved everything off that. My other faves were the 1-2 punch of Arcadia/Juggernaut. I said it then - loved that Helmet feel, and it really brought me back to college when I was obsessed with Meantime for a bit. I see that only has 5-6 songs on that what I am guessing was an EP? Also can't beat the balls-out swagger of Gone Cold. Play that walking into the bar and play Juggernaut if there's a bar fight? Thanks for the music, gb!

if a few people want to be creative with it, let it be. Plenty of people will just be doing 31 songs by one band. There’s no “ruining” of the playlist - open to some subjective takes.

Exactly. It was refreshing to see a positive emphasis on their 80s output, which largely got ignored, especially in the US post Body Language.
Most Queen lists prioritize the first 8 years.

I finally listened to the #1 playlist.

Excluding my own song, I already knew that I liked these songs:
  • Police - Synchronicity II
  • SRV - Texas Flood
  • Kinks - You Really Got Me
  • Chicago - 25 or 6 to 4
  • Stevie Wonder - Living For The City
  • AC/DC - Let There Be Rock
  • Ray Charles - What'd I Say
  • Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water
  • Bruce - Thunder Road
On first listen to this playlist, these were the unfamiliar songs I liked the best:
  • Decemberists - The Calamity Song
  • Big Thief - Not
  • Daft Punk - One More Time
  • Elliott Smith - Between the Bars
  • Ryan Adams - Come Pick Me Up - love the harmonica! good choice for #1, think this is my favorite of his in the countdown
As expected, this is a great playlist, but I actually liked the #2 playlist better.

I have been putting the songs I identify in these posts in a spreadsheet. I'm up to 297 songs. So far that group of songs includes at least one song from 42 of the 45 artists in the countdown other than mine.

I think the only concern about taking things like session players and producers would be if it interfered with an artist somebody else was doing, as addressed. Maybe it would be on the person doing that to PM the person doing the possible conflict?
