Middle Aged Dummies!! Artists #1's have been posted!! (4 Viewers)

I have my artist for round 2 and I am pretty confident no one will take them. However, I am a little unsure of what the reaction will be to them. They have a very wide range of sounds, some radio stuff but a lot of things that have not been on the radio. I am curious and nervous at this same time, because I am a newb to the music threads and my appreciation of music isn't near as deep as some.
Wide range of sounds = please do

Crazy question because I'm stoned.
Say someone picks George Harrison does that mean no one can do the Beatles? Or can but only Beatle songs he doesn't sing on?

It was refreshing to see a positive emphasis on their 80s output, which largely got ignored, especially in the US post Body Language.
We’ve gotten a lot of it from @Mrs. Rannous over the years. She’s a fan of that era.
I like all their stuff, for the most part, and did know and love that era well (having all of them on cassette tape). Innuendo came out when I was working in a record store - out of college.

I am actually excited to start round 2 because I don't think this artist gets near as much credit as they should. They are a very talented artist with a wide range of sound that can be classified into multiple genres. I also don't think they are as well known, but I could be very wrong about that.

My Doves Playlist is 43 songs. It includes 11 extra that were either in the top 31 at one point or very close. Plus a short instrumental called Where We're Calling From that is a good lead in to the song NY. Doves have lots of songs that pair well together. My #1 and #2, for example. Whenever I listen to Words, I need to hear There Goes the Fear right after.

Here is a song by their previous band, Sub Sub. A studio fire destroyed most of their equipment and spurred them to start afresh as Doves. They played this in the encore the last time I saw them in 2009.

Good job everyone. Looking forward to listening to all of band playlists.

I was trying to talk my 8 year old into doing a playlist, but she wasn't having it.
I for one would be interested in the Wiggles ranking.
Oh no - it would probably be ABBA or Elvis.
My 7 year old is obsessed with Elvis. Brought him back a kids book about Elvis from the Rock and Roll HOF last month.

ETA: Just asked him and he said his number one would be Jailhouse Rock.
That is awesome!

I love that our visit to Sun Studios made her (and me, frankly) listen to stuff like Elvis and others. I hate that the real reason she has a bunch of Elvis on her playlist is because she loves Full House.

I tackled @Pip's Invitation's cheating top 40 list yesterday too. ;) Broken record and all, but Chicago was one of the best surprises for me in this playlist. Smart move by you kicking off the adventure with Hideaway and reeling in the dopes like me who had an ignorant view of Chicago based on the few sappy hits I heard. After I get through more playlists, I have them marked to try a couple full albums as well. I'm open to suggestions there too. No surprise coming from me that a couple of the rockers were my personal favorites. I really dug Hideaway and Poem 58. I've listened to Saturday in the Park enough that my 8yo let on a little groan when it came on yesterday again. Top to bottom there wasn't anything I actively disliked, and really liked way more than I thought I would - thanks again for the playlist!
If you're most interested in them rocking out, then start with the debut album, Chicago Transit Authority. Honestly the next best bets after that are the second and third albums. After that, rock songs tended to be outliers. Chicago VIII has more than usual but its quality is inconsistent. Chicago V, despite the presence of Saturday in the Park, has mostly pretty complex songs and may be the closest they came to prog. If you like all of that and want to try something a little more "risky," there is Chicago XIV, which was made in 1980 after Terry Kath died but has a lot of straightforward rockers (in some quarters it's referred to as their "New Wave" album) that I was pleasantly surprised by (these include most of the bonus tracks on the deluxe version); however, avoid tracks 3, 4 and 5, which are horrific previews of the soon-to-come "crappy and sappy" era.

The best live album from the early years is Live in Japan, which has much better sound quality than At Carnegie Hall (and is half the length).

Your Queen list was very cool.
Exactly. It was refreshing to see a positive emphasis on their 80s output, which largely got ignored, especially in the US post Body Language.
Most Queen lists prioritize the first 8 years.
Not me. I like stuff from all of their career. And I would have included this classic.

Really liked all the Doves songs you shared. Can’t wait to dig into this playlist.

Spoon's Top 31 according to rockaction. I whipped it together because I don't feel like stressing it. I ordered them in the playlist because that was drag and drop. #31 is the first track on the Spotify list (#1 on the playlist. It's "Lines In The Suit") and then that is followed by #30, all the way to the 1st.

The following are my favorite songs by these artists and they did not appear in this countdown.

The Kinks - Picture Book
Elliott Smith - I Figured You Out

These two are my #2 favorites from each artist.
I may be a little underweight on Picture Book. Of course, I say that about every song each time I listen to it. I find it to be a very Beatles-like song, which isn't a bad thing. It does have a killer riff. I am not sure why, but I find myself getting a little irritated by the "Scooby-Dooby-Doo" part.

I had put together a playlist for Spoon before this thread got going too. Wound up choosing Modest Mouse instead. My list has a lot of overlap with yours and Hov’s.

It’s listed roughly from #1 to #31.

I listened to @Don Quixote 's Jorge playlist yesterday. It's odd coming from someone who tends to not focus on lyrics to say that the language barrier is a bit of a struggle with a couple of these artists. I liked both a lot, but similar happens with me and Sigur Ros. That said, this playlist greatly benefitted from a dedicated playlist so I could get into the vibe more. It was a fantastic listen while were out at the beach and lounging around yesterday. Like with the other playlists, there was not anything I didn't like. What I started finding is that the songs I gravitated to most were on Africa Brasil, A Tabua De Esmeralda, and Puro Suingue, so those were added to my extended album research list that I am putting together as I go. Songs that stood out most were both versions of Taj Mahal, Rita Jeep, Os Alquimistas... and your playlist opener. Thanks for sharing the playlist - 0% change I encounter or listen to this great music without these FFA adventures.

I had quite a few of my top 31 Stevie songs not make Uruk’s list, including Boogie On. That’s a testament to the sheer volume of great songs he has.

Boogie On gets bonus points from us because Phish covers it live frequently.

quickie here on my #1 from Bauhaus "Double Dare" ...

when they reunionized for the show here, THIS were the tune they chose as initial salvo - heralding their long awaited return with those blaring chords ringin' out - it are, to me, their most remarkable achievement - their truest essence.

Gotham - Bauhaus

love how they used the montage over it to kick the film off ... i mentioned awhile ago that i missed this, but that my dahlink scene queen gf were front and center - she there - oh, and look at that vanguard ... the lads drew the ladies, as did much of the groups in the genre, much more than the numb nutz punk acts ... but the 'haus were KINGS.

- the vid is timestamped, there are a few trademark songs i omitted, which i'll get to later -

ENJOY THE CONCERT!

Nice! Glad you enjoyed it. I was not sure going in how well he would play with this crowd, but glad I was able to make some new fans of his out of this endeavor.

A Tabua de Esmeralda is my favorite album of his front to back; I think that is an album worth listening to that way, as it has its own unique vibe. Puro Singue is a greatest hits style collection; it has some songs on it from albums not otherwise available on Spotify (Rita Jeep from Negro e Lindo, which is a great one, but need to listen on YouTube), and does have some of his other popular tunes that did not make my cut of 31 (Que Peña and Que Maravilha a couple of other good ones there).

Thank you all for indulging me with sharing my obsession with Sigur Ros. I know they aren't everyone's cup of tea. And thanks for all of the work everyone put into the playlists. I have saved a number of them.

My favored artist for round 2 is much more well known and they sing in English, and their songs have hooks... and choruses!
