Music Draft - Rolling Stone Greatest 500 Songs Garbage List - Now with unhealthy regional pork-stuffs! (2 Viewers)

It's looking like I'll be driving home from work or running errands when my next pick comes up. Go ahead and skip and I'll catch up later.

Oh hey, look, the spreadsheets aren't working again!  Only sometimes, but no longer always, does entering the pick automatically shade it Angry Red on the song list.

NO ONE "FIX" THIS EXCEPT @Northern Voice, PLEASE!

In fact it has "unshaded" many of the very early picks.  I was going back to try to fix some of the recent picks, but I'm not going to go through the entire draft again.  Cool, cool, this is cool.

NO ONE SHOULD RELY ON THE SHADING OF THE SONG LIST UNTIL THIS IS FIXED.  DOUBLE-CHECK ON THE ACTUAL DRAFT SHEET.  TIA.

Oh, I just looked up which one that was.  I see it's the one where I kept screaming "Noooooo, don't do it!" at the screen.
I know what you mean. It was tough to watch. In the article she said that another scene was done for the episode, but she fought to have it cut, because she didn't want what was to come so "blatantly telegraphed."  They cut the scene, and used it in season 6 as a flashback.

Round 9

459 No Ordinary Love by Sade

Not sure this is the song I would have chosen for Sade on this list but then again how does one choose? All of her songs make me want to have sex. Wild sex, sweaty sex, sex under neon lights, sex on a balcony overlooking the Caribbean Sea, just all the kinds of sex.

@Uruk-Hai

Oh, I thought it was blatantly telegraphed anyway.  I was screaming "Nooooooo, don't do it Adriana" at the TV when she was talking to Christopher.

Based on saved spreadsheet versions, it looks like the problem with the song list happened (unsurprisingly) between midnight and 7AM PDT.  I restored the last good version and pasted this morning's picks back into the draft sheet.  The first two sheets look OK now.

Sheet 3 will have to be updated with picks following NV's pick of Rihanna last night.

I took Withers off the board, now I'll take James Brown off the board.

9.04 Papa's Got a Brand New Bag -- James Brown (#34, bloc 26-50)

This bloc started with 18 "no hesitation" picks but is down to 9. And like the first bloc, people who have left it alone might start grabbing from it so they don't end up with something from the top 50 that they don't want.

You already know how great and influential this song is, there's nothing more I can add about that.

I would have drafted Sade earlier but I just picked her in the last draft (last two actually) and was leaving her for you this time.

It was. As soon as the talk came out, the inevitable was there. I was hoping she had had enough after the Cosette incident.

@Eephusup.
You know how I just posted about how influential "Maybelene" is? She has company with this one.

Yay.  I'll take care of that.

Thanks again for the fix.

9.05 - Lucinda Williams - Passionate Kisses (#437)

I listened to a bunch of Lucinda during the last draft but ended up not picking her.  I had her self-titled non-debut, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road and World Without Tears lined up for the threesome bonus round.

I've commented before about how some 80s Country sounds like Power Pop to me.  Passionate Kisses is one of those songs with very powerpoppy chord changes and rhythm track. The twang in Lucinda's voice is one of the only things that takes it across the road to the Country side.

Mary Chapin Carpenter did a very straightforward cover of the song a few years later and had a big hit and won a Grammy for it.

@The Dreaded Marco

Legend has it, she wrote this and "I Will Always Love You" on the same day. How the hell did she survive THAT day?
She wrote "I Will Always Love You" so Porter Wagoner could get it in his head that she wanted to leave their partnership. I don't know if Jolene was written the same day. Porter produced both the songs.

I had this lined up for a pick from that box until I listened again and realized it was the Mary Chapin Carpenter version I was really familiar with.

His whole "thing" never appealed to me.  I get his rapping talent......he can rhyme at break neck speed.....woopity doo!.....it still sounds like #### to my ears.....and the whole scrawny Lil tough guy thing always seemed like a joke to me.
I think Eminem’s lyrics are pretty great.  If these 500 songs were listed in order of just best to worst lyrics, I’d put both of his songs on here in the top 100.

I created a list on the messing around sheet 1 that is tied to the song list but can be sortable without messing up the Song List sheet. I mean, I could be doing real work now, but it is Friday. You could rename that tab and allow people to use it and sort without messing anything up.

excellent point KT ...I just created my own spreadsheet on excel so I could identify and mark/rank those songs that I wanted.  It does require that I mark off what has been taken, but that's not a big deal.

The sheet I created on this just references other cells and also contains that same conditional formatting as the Song List page. I sorted a couple times and seems to work fine and shouldn't break anything because all they are is cell references.

9.19: "Billie Jean", Michael Jackson (44)

I think a recording of Louis Johnson just screwing around during bass guitar practice could've made list of 500.

Six years later ... the God of Thunder took a shot at it. Simmons lays down a pretty nice bassline here.

EDIT: No! Paul Stanley actually laid down that bass line in the studio. Gene Simmons just did some backing vocals.
Well I fired up some Kiss...needed some easy rock and roll today......and I can't believe I forgot this one from Dressed to Kill!  The powers are within her.....

This might be my favorite KISS song......I know, who cares!?

Anonymous Armadillo, PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH THE SPREADSHEET.
Has entering picks caused problems? I've been using the dropdowns.

I have found that I have to manually enter the song's rank number, though. I looked around to make sure there was no formula in that field before doing so.

I don't know what's caused the problems, though I highly doubt it was that.  But I'm around and entering everything, so it's best just not to have competing changes at the same time.  I have a "system" that kind of gets messed up if picks are half done.  And yes, you have to enter the number manually.  Thank you!

Through 9 rounds, here is my lineup:

Rhythm and Blues

A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke

1999 by Prince

Baby Love by The Supremes

No Ordinary Love by Sade

Rock and Roll

Help! by The Beatles

The Boys are Back in Town by Thin LIzzy

Maybellene by Chuck Berry

Hip Hop

Party Up by DMX

It Was a Good Day by Ice Cube

Does everyone else wake up each morning with a song stuck in their head?  I'm so puzzled sometimes by which song it is.  Like the time years ago that it was the theme song from Smokey and the Bandit several times in the same month.  Or like today, when it's this song, of which I know only one line (the first repetition of it in the chorus) so it's just that one line repeating over and over in my head.  Irritating.
