Netflix Original: Stranger Things (1 Viewer)

Big fan of the songs picked for this, as it was right in my wheelhouse as a music/new-wave/post-punk nerd back then. the Hero's cover in the 3rd or 4th episode gave me chills- amazing.

don't want to get too OPM sad-trombone here, and I'm hopefully wrong (and it doesn't really hurt the story-telling anyways)... but I don't think all of the songs picked were from 1983 or before. much to the wife's annoyance, I keep finding myself saying "wasn't that from a couple years later?".
By the way, where has Debbie Downer been?  :oldunsure:

And I was doing that with the Freeform (formerly Fox Family) series Dead of Summer.  I thought some of the songs and props they were using were not right, but turns out I was wrong.  :wall:   ... didn't have the same feelings about this.  I was these kids' age in '83 too, so... not sure.

Not that big a deal, but Freeform used to be ABC Family.

meets a show where Winona Ryder's character is annoying and over-acted.
I have a friend who used to have a huge crush on Winona and claims that she is the worst part of every production she has ever been in. I'm starting to think he might not be far off-base.

I keep waiting to be completely annoyed by her, because.. yeah, what you said. but it all kind of works for me.

but jeebus, the anorexia is really disturbing/distracting. again- I appreciate her abilities acting, but ugh. I wonder- did they cast her intentionally as an anorexic girl, or did they just want a skinny chick and whammo, by the time they started filming, anorexia. also started wondering after watching an episode last night if anybody in the cast or crew has tried to have an intervention.

They're not all pre 1983 but they all fit the mood well. Halt and Catch Fire has a similar 80s soundtrack and they've used songs from as recent as last year that blend/fit seamlessly.

As far as the skinny girl goes, yes, she seems way too skinny, but some girls are just really skinny.

Started and Finished this in the last two night, most addictive show for me in the last little while. I think they've done a great job telling a complete story but also leaving enough threads and hints in terms of where they can go for season 2. Won't speculate too much yet because a lot of people likely aren't finished S1 yet, but pretty great potential.

:goodposting:

agree with everything you wrote, especially telling a complete story. we wrapped it up last night- really liked it.

oh..

meets altered states

ok... scratch all of that

type (spoiler), but instead of (.. ), type [...]

eta: you don't need the /spoiler at the end apparently.

eta2:

I'm smart for an idiot

So has anyone given any thought to the Sheriff dead child somehow playing into the story at a later date.

Also notice that in their D&D game they mentioned a proud princess in their game - which could obviously be Nancy. I wonder if they will explore this more next season

leading up to the last episode, I thought for sure that his kid would feature in the upside-down... maybe even as the misunderstood monster. but given her cancer and demise, I don't think it happens.

as for nancy... as long they feed her something, I'm game for anything- thought she did really well in the role. thought the older brother was fantastic, as was the sheriff and eleven- all three really stood out to me. also liked the science teacher, who looks familar.

Watching it w the wife, and was sure she'd hate it... She loves it.

I'm totally undecided. While I enjoy watching it, Im not super into it. I have no "attachment" to it, and the show is a tad too (purposely) cheesy for me.

Either way, worth the watch. going on to episode 5 now

Watched 1 through 8 -- Meh.   I liked it at first but episodes 7 & 8 were mostly dumb and the show is just too juvenile for me.   Yes I know it is supposed to be juvenile -- it just isn't my cup of tea.

In episode 8 I was getting the impression that they were wrapping it all up and the show was going to be an anthology where next season would be a completely different story line with maybe the little girl being the common theme.   Now I don't think that is the case and they're just going to pick up where they left off --no thanks.

Started this last night, 1.5 eps in, not completely hooked. Winona is awful and the kid with the long hair/baseball cap is as annoying as any character I've seen in a long while. Will keep watching because I trust you guys.

Dustin? Aww, he is my favorite character on the show! He has such heart and keeps the group together. And he is funny

I was going to watch with my 12 year old daughter as she really likes drama/suspense/ horror shows.  Glad I didn't.   I am through episode 3.  The daughter hooking up with the guy in episode 2 would have been horrid to watch with my daughter.

Yeah, sorry, can't stand him. By the 4th time he mimicked the girl pulling up her shirt I wanted to punch his face.

Just giving my honest opinion.  Thought it started off pretty strong and maintained it through maybe episode 6 and then it kind of petered out at the end.

The little girl playing 11 is great though...

We watched the first episode, not bad, will continue watching. Not really a fan of shows that focus on kids that much. Sad to see the guy from The Knick gone already. The little girl also played a creepy kid on a little watched show called Intruders. She was the best part of that show and looks to be good in this too.

In for now.

I agree the last couple episodes degenerated into some of the less interesting 80s horror cliches (splitting up in the woods with monsters?), but it still worked really well for me outside of that, and I genuinely like how they ended it with just enough closure and things left open to allow for conversation.

and yeah- 11 was fantastic. conveyed so much without having much to say. my 9yo son has gotten into acting- I think this is a little mature for him, but I'd love for him to watch her performance so he can understand kid acting doesn't have to be about cutesy bs or broadway-style enunciating the lines loudly. I really liked the big brother and the sheriff as well... all three were genuine break-out stars to me.

You are a monster.  Dustin is the King of retro comedy relief.

I watched an episode about every other day and just finished it up. Overall, I enjoyed it and look forward to an additional season. Some of the acting was excellent (Dustin, Eleven, Hopper, Jonathan) and some was inconsistent (Joyce, Mike, Lucas, Steve). It was rife with cliches, but I'll assume that was intentional. It had a nice vibe and didn't try to do more than it could handle. Chief Hopper may be one of my favorite TV law enforcement officers (along with Fox Mulder and Jack Carter).

*I was surprised to find myself rooting for Stephen at the end. Still, his character arc seemed a bit unrealistic. I get his motivation, but he just turned on a dime.
*Why were the bad guys so quick to kill the cook near the beginning of the episode and then so loathe to kill anyone else after that?
*The bad guys were smart enough to create a superhuman but completely incompetent about nearly everything else.
*If there is another season, my guess is that Will will be the monster. Hopper and Eleven will team up to be the heroes, and then Hopper adopts Eleven to compensate for the loss of his own daughter.

cool- thanks.

yeah... a handful of those definitely after 1983- but as somebody else says- who cares (dammit... I do, but I'm an idiot about this kind of stuff). the soundtrack worked really well with the material- and none better than that Gabriel/Bowie cover. a taste of the very ubiquitous early 80s Gabriel voice doing a song that was already a classic, but one made recently. perfect.

I really thought there were way more original songs than that in this series. Credit to the group doing the score for blending the sound so well.

Incredible show

everything blended perfectly.  I though Winona did a great job here

a lot of lol moments.  Most shows these days have kid actors that are annoying and ungood, but these kids can act.

one thing that bothered me was they never really explained why they killed the diner guy immediately, but let Hopper go the first time he broke into the facility

i imagine things were getting out of hand and a town that hadn't had a suicide in decades or a missing person in longer, that too many events might draw attention.  The second time he gets caught, they ask him who he's working with, so maybe they decided to let him go and bug him to find out who else knows stuff and what do they know.

That second explanation makes the most sense

the diner owner knew about the girl. Hopper didn't know much of anything.
