Netflix Original: Stranger Things (2 Viewers)

Yeah, some dirthead in Podunkville in 1983 knowing who The Smiths are (and having some of their songs) is great writing.

I don't know that I've seen anyone here claim this show had great writing. I thought it was fun, plot holes and all.

I can dig the anachronistic crap bugging folks (it does me). I long ago gave up worrying about that stuff, though, because I know me and I'd enjoy NOTHING if I kept picking the movie/show/book apart. I realize I'm dumbing my own dumb ### down, but there ya have it.

When you were like 15 minutes in you'd seen like 3 mistakes, but like how many minutes did it take for you to get to like 8 mistakes?

For discussion purposes, why not list the glaring mistakes?
The aforementioned reference to The Smiths, a few of the cars are post 1983 models or have aftermarket add-ons that are post 1983, some furniture/fixtures that are obviously out of the time period,  pretty sure the weapons that the govt guys are using are out of period, a bunch of the stuff in The Mountian's diner kitchen are very modern including a plastic/microban cutting-board...

Not 100% sure of this one but it seems really cockeyed...Wynona's ROTARY dial phone gets fried yet is able to by one down at the local store, go home, and plug it in.

"Africa" by Toto playing on the radio.  That's not a flub...I just hate that song.

Teen girl using the phrase "it's not rocket science".  Eh, maybe possible but not very likely in 1983.

I'm only up to episode 3 but one of the kids used the term "mouthbreathers" Is that term that old? I always thought it was a word that needs to be retired but especially now if it's been around since the 80's.

Meh...possible but not common.

The link says nothing of, "earliest in print", it's an example of where it was found in print.

Ruling: False criticism.

People actually get off on coming into a thread and ####ting on a show we all like by nit picking the most minor things?  After market add-ons?

Please go away.

Other possible oddities

In episode 3, the cops are using microfiche readers but the machines are making sounds/motions like microfilm readers.

And the teen kid is using some sort of 35mm camera but the shutter sounds more like the old electronic flash.

  awesomeness. If these are schtick, I applaud you.

If they're not and your brain actually works like this all the time with no 'low power rest mode' I think you could benefit from meditating or doing some yoga or something. Because non-stop, hyperactive critical brain activity sounds like a level of hell just below having to wear a rattan helmet with a hungry rat inside of it for eternity.

Ahhhh...so this show is one of those "just turn your brain off and enjoy" things?

For me? Definitely. A level above drooling on myself, but several levels below the threshold where my brain even entertains whether that sounds like microfiche vs microfilm.

ETA: no judgement. If you have critical skills akin to a surgeon's scalpel, you wanna use them, I guess. When you're a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Luckily, I have a rusty handsaw that was part of a PlaySkool set of hand tools. A court order requires me to wear work gloves and a football helmet when I try and use it.

Of course this is really the problem.  Despite the nitpicks this show isn't bad.  It's definitely not as amazing as everybody keeps saying but it isn't crap.
I need to amend this.

It's now inching towards crap.

that little bald kid can do some serious crap so maybe just made a cutting board time travel backwards that is all i am saying anything could have happened take that to the bank brohans

Look, just stop. This is how it starts.

Tanner brings his schtick into a TV thread, and:

A) half the posters don't know it's schtick, either they don't know it's Tanner or their schtick meter is broken, and they start replying in earnest, and the thread starts to go off the rails, and,

B) the other half see easy fishing and try to mimic, one-up, or otherwise get in on the schtick too, and start posting stuff in the same vein as Tanner schtick. And they're not as funny as they think they are. Too many cooks. But the fish from A) don't know it's just more trolling, and start replying to those posters in earnest as well. This causes the cascade effect that completes the derailment of the thread.

You want this thread to stay good and clean, then just ignore him. Don't reply to him, don't mock, don't join in on the schtick. Don't think you're not getting fished because you're in on the joke, don't think it's safe to post stuff like "the cutting board is circa 1989," because two pages from now some idiot who thinks he's clever, but doesn't have a funny bone in his body, will try to get in on the joke and next thing we have pages of that crap and nothing else.

Need proof? Look at every tv thread Tanner has posted in.

Just stop commenting on it, ignore his bait, and let it go.
That's like 4 paragraphs about me.  Good work.

Spot on.  Has forced me to Reddit.

Read that last sentence again.  Are you happy Tanner?!?!?

FINAL REVIEW (no shtick or nitpicks)   2 out of 4 stars and pretty disappointing considering the hype.

80s Movie Homage:  One of the things that can ruin or almost ruin a movie or TV show is when the writers/director insist on infusing their style or shtick to the point where it takes away from the actual experience of enjoying the show.   Perfect example is Wes Anderson.  His goofy style is a huge distraction.  When I watch his movies I'm not watching a movie I'm watching a Wes Anderson movie.  Every minute or two there's some "quirky" crap that just reminds me I'm watching one of his movies.   Stranger Things has a similar problem.

Just as I was getting into the story there was yet another obvious reference to a 70s or 80s movie.  "OK, this is getting interesting...good...good...oh 'ET'.....and now 'Stand By Me'...this part is better...ah, 'Close Encounters'...aaaaannnd now 'Poltergeist'...yeah, we get it...you love these old movies".  It's one thing to pay tribute to older movies or genres but it was overkill.

And the 80s love mash-up didn't work thematically as well.  ET and Firestarter are very different types of movies.  Poltergeist is not Stephen King.  The Goonies and Christine don't work well together.  The different tones, themes, and styles of the movies that influenced this show muddled everything.   I get what they were trying to do but jumping back and forth between sci-fi, supernatural, kids-adventure(whatever), and horror just didn't work.

Acting:  Overall, most of the acting was pretty solid.  Harbour and the girl that played 11 stood out.  But Winona Ryder has never been anything but average and on this show she was pretty bad.   She came off as more "whiny" than "distraught".   I also wasn't all that impressed with the actors who played the older brother and sister.  Not bad but forgettable.  Some of that might be the clunky writing though.  The guy who played the jerky boyfriend wasn't bad but that might be because they gave him more to work with.  At times his character was a bit over the top but I think he did a good job with it.

Writing/dialog:  Most of the time it was decent.  I think the writers did a pretty good job of staying away from "corny" which would have been easy to do.

That being said...the writing for the kids was horrible for the most part.  I'd guess that 75% of the time when two or more of the kids were in a scene together they were arguing or yelling at each other.  Go back and watch if you don't believe me.  Doesn't matter if they're playing D&D or talking about what's happening or making a plan.

"This is crazy!"

"You saw what happened!"

"No way!"

"We need to do this!"

"blah blah blah!"

"Stop it!"

"[insert some goofy D&D, LOTR, or Star Wars drop]

"We can't do this!"

Over and over and over

to be continued...

My biggest complaint with this show is their bully game has a lot to be desired.  Doesn't even come close to those classic 80s films.  Johnny and Biff would run circles around these town "jocks".

I saw that.  Notice though that the earliest in-print sighting is from 1985.   Again, it is possible but seems to be a stretch.  I'm pretty much the same age as that character and sure as hell don't remember anyone using that phrase at that time.
You are correct. In 1981, we used the term missile surgery as science and rockets were relatively new.

I was honestly waiting for someone to yell out "Wolverines!" Or "Get em a bodybag!"
