Netflix Original: Stranger Things (1 Viewer)

The residents of Hawkins are the absolute most oblivious people in the world.

Shootout and murders during the fair, giant monster trapesing through the woods, mass murder in an active hospital, and a giant loud battle in the mall and not a person in the whole town noticed save one kid on a ferris wheel that brushed it aside.
After the show ended

me: how is anybody still in Hawkins?

wife: they don’t know about it

me: HOW

easily the most unbelievable part of the whole show

That's the most unbelievable part of the show? C'mon. Besides the monsters and the little girl nosebleeding things around with her mind the most unbelievable thing in the show for sure was Fat Bob scoring Winona Ryder.

For those that are watching, the new character of Robin is Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke's daughter.
I totally see that now that you mention it.  Looks a lot like her dad.

While looking I finally figured out that the mayor is Cary Elwes. Gah - I knew I had seen the guy and couldn't place him.  Head slapper - should have recognized him right off the bat.

this show does transport me back to the heyday of 1983-84 when I was top of the food chain in HS. Actually from about 83-89 my life was pretty solid between HS & college.
way to ford that up by the way.

ETA: I love me a good montage, and the “trying on clothes in the mall while Material Girl plays” montage may be my new all time favorite montage.

: question for those that have completed Season 3

did they say where the Byers and 11 were moving too?  I remember Bob wanted to move the family in season 2 to Maine but I can't recall if they mentioned specifically where they were going at the end of season 3
Yea, :shuked: Also

I don't know, I think it makes the show what it is.  My son keeps asking me if that was really what it was like then.  Most of the time, the answer is yes.  The show is a combo mystery, action and history lesson for him.  We are loving it.

Due to many vacation/holiday/camp events, we are only 2 episodes in so far.
Agreed.. Being a person who loved the 80's and listens to 80's music 99% of the time it is one of the draws for me.

We probably wont get to 1988, but seeing how they aren't shying away from showing actual 80s movies, it would be awesome if they break the fourth wall and Beetlejuice gets shown with Joyce in the room and everyone just kind of looks perplexed.

Also, the only character development I didn't really like was Max.  Last season she was presented as this rebellious kid type of character, and this season she's suddenly an expert on boys and is all about going to the mall to try on brand name clothing. Also Will sobbing and dramatically destroying his fort thing was a bit over the top

But those are nitpicks.  This show is really good.

My prediction: they jump to 1986, El gets to Russia via the upside down, and she causes the Chernobyl meltdown while saving Hopper from the commies.

Yeah, but that is the way of things in a lot of shows; they're the movie equivalent of video game NPCs.

It's not any different than the oblivious mother unaware that E.T. is on her home for about a week.

I personally view it as a good counterpoint to what the story's heroes are doing - particularly in ones like this where everyone is just living their lives until fate taps certain members to rise above their everyman status and do something extraordinary. Even while the rest are oblivious to the danger. It makes the heroes more heroic to me.

Right.

It's why the government built it's facility there in the first place.

And the Russians were able to build theirs under a MALL for crying out loud. I think that part is really funny.

This has been a popular "theory" since the recent season aired, but I'd be shocked if Netflix wanted to put millions of (whoops, I mean 31!) deaths on Eleven's hands.

Interesting. I didn't see that as such a huge departure from her rebellious nature -- she's street smart and aware and her upbringing (and seeing brother's sleazy lothario nature) likely taught her a lot about the birds and the bees and the flowers and trees.

But I do get your point that it was a different Max than last year. I don't think that was a bad thing in terms of character development. It certainly helped bring the two girls closer as allies this season as they seemed almost at opposites/in competition last season at times.

It seemed like every character was in a state of annoyance all the time.  Was not enjoyable.

Tonally was all over the place.  Lot of people just died should I be laughing 5 seconds later in next scene.

How they resolved steve's season long storyline was so "woke."  Way to be so edgy Duffer bros.

Mike's acting was scene ruining at times.  Never had a problem with any of the kids' acting.  Mike was brutal this season though.
I can agree with this.  I think it's the Marvel affect where everyone feels like they have to inject lighthearted wit and humor into every scene now.

We're a long ways from watching Joyce descend into madness over her missing/presumed dead child while desperately plastering lights all over her house in season 1.

I'm not sure how a show about interdimensional monsters can jump the shark but this one kind of seemed to do it this season with some of the over the top stuff.  Still a fun watch, though.
i will never understand how some people will say that a show about monsters from the upside down where a mind power girl who can kill stuff with her brain and a boy who talks through a dimenshun hole via christmas lights someone is now quote over the top that is all i am sayin take that to the bank bromigos

Finally finished the season last night.  Enjoyed the last episode a great deal.  My 13-yr old son loved it.  It is his favorite show right now.

It’s a poorly done charicature of the 80s.

Like “Grease” was to the 50s or “Bugsy Malone” was to the 1930s or “That 70s Show” was to the 70s.

Or your face is to a face.

Well, I understand there are a few people out there who are ride or die.  All good.
Not ride or die. It was a B season. Laughable to favorably compare Stranger Things to it though.

Fun season. The best part of Stranger Things for me is that this series is a rare TV show that I get to watch with my girls. They have a bunch of show they watch with their mom. Stuff I just don't get into like AGT and American Idol,  but this one is ours. We'd find a night mom was out, make dinner and watch a few episodes together. It was fun for me to be transported back to my youth and seeing how "weird" the 80's seemed to them. Sure, the plot line of a huge Russian military fortress built in Indiana was beyond over the top, but so is a giant inter-dimensional doorway being there. Great fun and great memories of sharing it with my kids. Will be bummed to see this series end.

When my boys were young, we had a blast watching all of the movies from my youth. Karate Kid, Back to the Future, The Goonies, and then as they got older, Stand By Me, Die Hard, etc.  I found that was a great way to have the experience that you’re describing.

Great Post.

My oldest loves Beverly Hills Cop

I think this adds to the 80s feel of it.  That's exactly the type of ridiculous plot hole that would be present in an 80s sci fi/fantasy/action movie.

Just finished and enjoyed S3.  Still not as good as the S1, just for the newness of the experience.  Better than S2.

I put this in popcorn flick category where there is probably a lot they are trying to hint at, throw homage to, or whatever.  But, I just sit down and be entertained for an hour.

Russians building a base under a mall is probably more plausible than the premise of Red Dawn.

And the unrefined creature effects are endearing in a Tales From The Crypt/Creepshow sort of way.

Season 3 was great. I felt like the direction/filming was by far the best of the three seasons, and the pace was very good. Fun, entertaining show.

:goodposting:  Had a blast watching this season. We loved it. Rumor is the next season starts shooting in October. So it’s too bad we’ll likely have to wait until the end of 2020 for season 4 but that’s what it takes.

I saw somewhere that it was something like Dec 2020 when it was planned for release.

I'm gutting it out until the end, but I feel like June in Handmaid's Tale when she has to let Commander Waterford hit it.

The same for me.  I have a 15 year old daughter and I was 15 in 1982.  Watching it together, I don't point out things like "Video game high scores were only 3 digits so you couldn't possibly put MADMAX in there" and instead point out that I drank Kool Aid out of that same Tupperware pitcher every single day as a kid.

She also now thinks the 80's music and clothing are "cool" which I never thought I'd hear....

I should start a new thread and poll on this.

A lot of the kids in my 16-year-old daughter's circle are into '80s music. And some of the '80s fashion elements are coming back -- neon, most notably.
