New Draft - Songs about Imperfect Relationships (1 Viewer)

I like the song too. Why do you think he is a sellout?
well, i like his Bluebird beginnings, his songwriting chops. but he was part of the jingleistic jingoism that engineered response from those who drove pickups and i hate all that ####.

I'm not sure what that jingoism stuff means. I recall you saying in the Ken Burns documentary on country music that you have an antipathy for all things southern.  I'm southern.  I don't have a pickup truck, but I'd like one. It would be great to be able to transport stuff in the back of it. I could put you in the back of it. I could give you a helmet incase we hit a bump and you flew out.

I would pay good money to see something like this.

Round 15 (wildcard): "The Living Years" - Mike + The Mechanics

For my wildcards, shifting from relationships between spouses/partners to parents/children. And no draft can have too much Paul Carrack.

Gave the help the day off yesterday, so I need to catch up.

Round 13: From the group my college aged son thought was a 90's boy band, Now and Then - The Smithereens.

I've been torn apart since I met you
Don't know how I'll see it through
Troubled times are on their way
Wish that you could stay

Now and then
I feel like giving up
Instead I'll cry
Alone
And wonder why

Friends tell me I'm acting like a fool
The way we live breaks all the rules
(The) lies I tell don't seem so strange
Wake me up, I'll change

Now and then
I feel like giving up
Instead I'll cry
Alone
And wonder why

Love, I can't believe my lies drove you away
Love, I can't believe I made you feel this way

Last time that I looked into your eyes
Telling lies that made you cry
Troubled times are on their way
Wish that you could stay

Now and then
I feel like giving up
Instead I'll cry
Alone
And wonder why

Love, I can't believe my lies drove you away
Love, I can't believe I made you feel this way

Now and then
Now and then, love!
I feel like giving up

I don't see an apology

Let's wake up the room. From ZZ's album. Amazing how little they have changed over the decades. I can tell it great because when I started playing it, the wife came and shut my office door.

R13 / Cheating

Shakin' Your Tree / ZZ Top

You been hidin', yes, you're hidin'
You been stayin' out on me, sneakin' 'round
Me and you ain't workin' out just like we oughta be
You've got me down
Somebody else been shaking your tree
Supposed to be saving all that stuff for me

I'm tired of foolin' around with you, and sittin' here alone
It's on my mind
I think it's time for me to find a new tree of my own
It's plantin' time
Anything you want to do is cool with me
I don't care who shakes your tree

(they hate G's)

Round 14: Leaving

An appropriate follow-up to my last pick, Deep Black - The Smithereens

Deep black look at me
Tell me what will be, will be
Deep black compromise
When I look into your eyes

Deep black lies, deep black lies, deep black lies
(Deep black lies, deep black lies)

Deep black can't you see
All the things you meant to me
Deep black jealousy
Every time you look at me

Deep black lies, deep black lies, deep black lies
(Deep black lies, deep black lies)

Deep black what you are
Doesn't matter anymore
Deep black tragedy
You've got you and I've got me

Deep black lies, deep black lies, deep black lies
(Deep black lies, deep black lies)

It was the "patriotic" response to the Bush invasion. They took the seeds of patriotism post-911 and morphed it into jingoism. Remember the Dixie Chick controversies? They were the flip side.

Reverend Dr. Mable John has an interesting background. She was the first female artist signed to Berry Gordy's Tamla records label, which would become Motown. She is the sister of the late R&B artist Little Willie John. Mable would leave Tamla/Motown and sign with Stax, because she felt she was a better fit there. She was right. Her Stax compilation album "Stay Out of the Kitchen," is great. I like it better than her Motown one. She either wrote or co-wrote most of the songs. She was also one of Ray Charles' best friends, and worked for seven years as the musical director of the Raelettes, and she co-wrote many songs for him. She would leave the music business, and get a doctorate in divinity. She became a pastor and founded the Joy in Jesus Ministries in LA where she still resides.

Round 15

Cheating

Sorry About That (Take1) - Mable John

That is a great blues song though it fits neither the theme of the draft or the theme of my draft.
I wasn't saying either of those things, just saying it was the song that first popped in my mind when I read your choice.

Weird that The Walker Brothers were completely off my radar, considering how old I am.

Yeah I got what you meant. The blues song you linked was new to me. I have to add that to a blues playlist on spotify. Thanks for the find!

is there an updated list i'm missing? the spreadsheet hasnt been updated in a week. i been trying to keep a balance in my head (enter joke here), but it's time to get down to the counting part & i dont wanna scroll 15 pgs if i dont have to

12- Cold/Distant

Guided By Voices- Tractor Rape Chain

Why is it every time I think about you
Something that you have said or implied makes me doubt you?
Then I look into your cynical eyes and I know it
As if it never meant anything to me

[Chorus]
Parallel lines on a slow decline—tractor rape chain
Better yet, let's all get wet on the tractor rape chain
Speed up, slow down, go all around in the end

The sheets for these drafts are now subject to regular acts of vandalism. Someone keeps going into them, deleting picks, putting in political messages, etc.

Maybe have it password protected and PM the password to the participants?

Round 15: Disagreeable/irritating

Please - Chris Isaak

I keep listening, very quietly
You're discussing your philosophy
There's a long list of what's wrong with me
And you go on talking endlessly now

What's the problem? What's the question?
What's the answer? Where's this heading?
You keep talking, Where's it going?
If there's an answer I don't know it

Please
You're killing me
Please
You're killing me with all these questions

I've been trying to get along with you
Doesn't matter what I try to do
Once you start in
There's no stopping you now

What's the problem? What's the question?
What's the answer? Where's this heading?
You keep talking, Where's it going?
If there's an answer I don't know it

Please
You're killing me
Please
You're killing me with all these questions

Round 14 - Disagreeable Behavior (addiction division) - She Talks To Angels, Black Crowes

She'll tell you she's an orphan after you meet her family

I seldom tell the Scary Mary drug stories. There's a reason for that - the drama is too deep & disorderly to be gathered into a proper tale. Plus, in many ways, they're more pathetic than the dying stories. This song captures the spirit of them like no other.

She never mentions the word addiction
In certain company.
Yes, she'll tell you she's an orphan
After you meet her family.

She paints her eyes as black as night now.
Pulls those shades down tight.
Yeah, she gives me a smile when the pain comes.
The pain gonna make everything alright.

Says she talks to angels.
They call her out by her name.
Oh yeah, she talks to angels.
Says they call her out by her name.

She keeps a lock of hair in her pocket.
She wears a cross around her neck.
Yes the hair is from a little boy,
And the cross from someone she has not met, well, not yet

Says she talks to angels.
Says they all know her name.
Oh yeah, she talks to angels.
Says they call her out by her name.

She don't know no lover,
None that I ever seen.
Yeah, to her that ain't nothing
But to me it means, means everything.

She paints her eyes as black as night now.
Pulls those shades down tight.
Oh yeah there's a smile when the pain comes.
Pain's gonna make everything alright, alright yeah

Says she talks to angels.
Says they call her out by her name.
Oh yeah, angels
Call her out by her name
Oh angel,
They call her out by her name
Oh she talks to angels,
They call her out, yeah yeah
Call her out,
Don't you know that they call her out by her name

Round 15 - Wild Card (obsession division), Wild is the Wind, Johnny Mathis

My baby sister and i are opposites. She is an incurious princess, careless & generous to a fault. Obsessive pet fancier, gossip, shopaholic. She has been up to a quarter of million dollars in debt from credit cards (she once charged a friend's wedding reception); daughter of a research scientist, she's fond of casually announcing she doesnt believe in science. A total Oprahette who believes something becomes right by her doing it. She'd make a good president. She stalked the same man for a decade, enlisting her friends like a scavenger hunt. Then she remained true to a married man a generation older than her for the sake of the Tues & Thurs he could get away from his invalid wife for 25 years. When the wife died, the guy threw my sister over, not to call her again until he'd found another dormouse to cheat on (proud to say she rebuffed him). The only things we have in common is that we're fat, broke & alone. Our family is so proud.

Oh, and our love of singing. Sis has a singular voice. She sounds like Sarah Vaughn telling a ghost story. She learned from a long series of incompetent voice teachers to hammishly murder every song she attempts and can only rarely be disabused of the notion to do so. She and the students of a late voice teacher have put on a musicale every spring for decades. Sis always does a boa song (working the crowd w My Heart Belongs to Daddy, Let's Misbehave etc) and a torch song, as well as the showtunes the group performs. She regularly solicits my attendance & notes but always cries & yells after she hears them.

Couple of years ago i wrote a boa song for her called Risque...

Am I risky?/Or am I just risque?

Pour me a whiskey/Then git out my way

Less'n you wanna find out/Which ##### i am today

...and she liked it so much she agreed to let me coach her thru a torch song. I picked this one,  wrote backup arrangements for her classmates to highlight the spookiness of my sister's vocal, got her to stop breaking words and sing more naturally and i must say it weren't half bad. I was quite proud. It pleased & impressed her so much that she went right back to hackslaughtering ballads like she always had. That's my sis!!

13- Cheating

Shocking Pinks- Second Hand Girl

If I arrive on your doorstep
Could you hold in the tears?
You let them go like falling stars
Passing through the years
You have to lose to really win
We both found out way too late
I'm running like I have no home
And all I can do now is sin

14- Cheating

Savages- She Will

She will enter the room
She will enter the bed
She will talk like a friend
She will kiss like a man
She will #### other men
She will come back again
Get hooked on loving hard
Forcing the slut out
Oh, oh, oh, oh

Yeah, you've got to get used to it
And give your heart a little kick
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
Oh, oh, oh, oh

R15  Cheating

The Cars - My Best Friend's Girl

Not sure this is technically about cheating because I get the sense that the girl dumped the narrator (Ric) and later started dating his best friend.  But I'm sure Ric felt cheated on. Poor guy.

He bounced back just fine.

Not a fan of the man in his old age (he could be a bit of dic) but he did write some great new wave pop/rock songs.
