"No way Jose" is racist now? (1 Viewer)

Hey I don't really care...just surprised the word was filtered out. Not spelled the same ("ardly" vs. "er") Not really fighting any fight.
It's almost as though Joe Bryant isn't personally reading and editing every post on the board as they come in, but has instead hired some sort of robot which is incapable of understanding our words in context to do that job.

Nothing I could find about the origin of the phrase suggests even the mildest of racial overtones.

Verdict: Not racist.

I.Believe.You.Are.Correct.

All joking aside, what exactly is the racist connotation? I am unfamiliar with the origin, is there something there?

On the surface it seems like the saying "That's the fact Jack" being offensive to people named Jack.
I think some might compare it to something like "********'s chance" but I don't think it was ever used that way.

I couldn't find anything like this about No way Jose. Nothing even remotely close actually.

The ********'s chance originated from the early 19th century potentially from several events. One explanation is that at that time, Chinesemigrant workers in the U.S. were sent into mines and construction sites to ignite dynamite, potentially with disastrous consequences. They were also lowered over cliffs by rope and boatswain's chairs to set dynamite to clear mountain and other obstructions to make way for the railroad construction. In this work, if they were not lifted back up before the blast, serious injury or death would result. Therefore the phrase a "A ********'s Chance" may have been coined in this context.Another explanation for the phrase is the California Gold Rush 1849. The travel time for news of the gold rush to reach China was quite long, and by the time Chinese from China arrived to prospect, many of the rich mines were already taken. These Chinese immigrants who missed out time-wise had to work with only those lands which had already been exploited or which were rejected by others, meaning these "Chinamen" had a slim chance of success. The historical record, however, indicates that many Chinese combined efforts with each other and did very well in the goldfields, introducing mining techniques then unknown to non-Chinese.[5]

Little known fact.....The term "2-buck Chuck" was coined in reference to the notion that all guys named "Chuck" give out blow-jibbers for $2 bottles of cheap wine.

Usually with these iffy ones, they're not really saying that what you have said is racist, they're saying that they suspect you are racist and you do not get the benefit of the doubt. HTH.

Ever see Chuck n' Buck by Mike White of Freaks and Geeks fame?

Wait...

Don't. Really.
Saw it when we 1st arrived in SoCal around 2000/01, pretty weird and not something I want to watch again.
No. Not at all. I remember how Mike White got pissed at Apatow for what he felt was Apatow's disavowal of all things underdog and weird. Called out his movies as bullying.

Well, Mike, if I have a choice between "Knocked Up" and "Chuck n' Buck," I know what I'm choosing.

Oooodely-oooodeley-ooo. (part of Chuck N' Buck).

Renege doesn't have the slightest racial overtone. However, I've definitely encountered a few racist douches who say renig just assuming that it does have some kind of racist implication. A lot of idiocy on both sides, but that doesn't mean that there have not been plenty of genuinely unnecessary mean-spirited occasions of people saying renig. That's one that's best to just walk around. See also: not worth the hassle/choose your battles/etc.
The word originated from the N word spelled backwards.

Pretty sure this is false.

:lmao: at me

I shouldn't post before drinking coffee.

It originated from the last 2 letters of the N word being put, backwards, at the beginning. My parents wouldn't explain that to me as a kid when I asked but my grandparents did --- "it's so you don't have to say the real word". Everyone knew what it meant when I was growing up.

It stems from Latin. It's as racist as "vinegar".

I actually have an Uncle Jose.

The 'no way Jose' joke is common at our family get togethers, like when Uncle Jose reaches for a sandwich or asks for a beer. Old shtick but fun. Absolutely Cra-zee to think anyone would think it racist.

Does this mean PETA is going to start getting upset if I keep saying "See ya later, alligator"? That's one of my favroites.

I said no way Jose and a women called me a racist. Since when is this racist?
Everything offends somebody these days. As an agnostic, your userID offends me. Forces me to think of Christianity. How dare you!!!
I'd love for something racially or culturally biased to be said to a prominent celebrity in public, and the celebrity to respond something to the effect of, "I'm not offended. That would just be an easy crutch for me to cling onto. Non-issue, let's move on" and completely dismiss. Said celebrity sits back and watches the carnage as everyone else in the media fights about it, with popcorn in hand.

Doesn't matter who, but I'd love for something like this to happen. We're too sensitive and soft as a society. I don't want people to be openly bigoted or anything, but there's no line anymore, everything and anything is twisted and interpreted as offensive and maximum penalty sought. We need to re-establish the "line." so to speak.
I know this thread hasn't been serious, but seriously, :goodposting: Especially the bolded part.

I agree.

I also think that we need to stop crying racism when someone misspeaks. And by that I mean, just because someone says something that could be taken as offensive, doesn't mean they are racist.

Nah, Camel jockeys are way smaller than TIS

I used renege in a meeting a couple of weeks ago and was told its a racist word.
Are you some kind of reneger?
No, I am not. I actually mentioned that we couldnt renege on our commitments, while in a meeting. I was told that it was a racist and offensive word. Used the word for years and have never heard of such foolishness.
How is that a racist word?
It's not. The person who thought it was is an idiot. It's like a white person telling me I'm being racist because I want to go eat lunch at the Cracker Barrel.

You know why there are only 49 contestants in the Miss Ebonics beauty pageant? Nobody wanted to be Miss Idaho. Is that racist?

It would appear your grandparents were full of ####.

That's what I learned growing up. I'm sure other parents and grandparents were all truthtellers and were never wrong though.

HLN had a feature about lying parents. One parent told its little kids that they couldn't go to the beach until the mayor started up the wave machine. Another said his dad told him that the ice cream truck played music when it was out of ice cream.

I know someone else also commented on this but thats pure fiction. It means to go back on your word or to void a commitment. its not spelled renig although it can be pronounced that way. If pronounced correctly it should sound more like renegg but I have always pronouced it renig.
