**Not-so-offical Green Bay Packers Off-season Thread** (1 Viewer)

So once again Ted Thompson's UFA haul for the year stands at zero, haha.
Can you elaborate? Why is that funny? Serious question.I am really liking the Packers O Line depth, and I think Sitton is going to be a pro bowler at guard in the near future.
I am sure this is just CH's sarcasm, but would note that Anthony Smith is still on the team and will likely contribute this season. Also, while Woodson and Pickett continue to prove to be extremely successful FA signings as anchor starters on defense, it now appears that Chillar is arguably the best linebacker on the team as of today, at least until Barnett is fully back. I don't think there is any question based on the camp reports I've read and the two games that he is the best of what looks to be a very deep group of linebackers. Meanwhile, the Packers will almost certainly be cutting several NFL quality players in the next two weeks, assuming they can't trade them.My main criticism of Thompson continues to be his moves on special teams (Jon Ryan, Tracey White), which in my opinion were primarily responsible for the W-L drop-off last season. That drop-off is largely due to injuries, which severely impacted the special teams, and the performance of the former ST coach (Stark?), who by all accounts was very difficult to work with - however, Thompson of course ultimately bears the blame for personell and coaching performance, so its on him.

This is an INSANE nitpick, but technically CH is right - Smith was not a UFA.ETA: http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/54880592.html

Preston was the only unrestricted free agent general manager Ted Thompson signed this off-season. Preston signed a two-year, $2 million deal that included no signing bonus.

Hi guys, what's the latest on the backup RB situation? I just acquired B.Jackson as a throw-in, and am wondering if I should draft D.Wynn to go with him.

Struck a nerve? I'm a Packers fan. Just pointing it out ironically.

Anthony Smith wasn't unrestricted. He does look okay, probably needed if Bigby keeps getting hurt.

Hard to say until after Friday night. The staff loves Wynn but they seem to be falling for Sutton as well. The problem is, as long as Grant is healthy, everyone else will be getting scraps.

White does not bother me as Im not so sure he would make this team this year. Not much room for him at LB since some others are playing special teams now too.The Ryan move was interesting. I understood the need for the change (at the time Ryan was good at booming punts...but his net avg was not very good and he was not so good at pinning teams deep...sadly, he got much better at that in Seattle after he left and the specialist at pinning teams behind the 20 Frost was awful at it)....but the execution of it was bad. Similar to how there was a need when he first came to trim the cap and not pay so much to older injurred Olinemen like Rivera and Flanagan...but he sucked at replacing them to this point. But looks better with Sitton for now.

Interesting article on Kevin Greene and Brady Poppinga.

Odd that Poppinga was probably on the outside looking in a few weeks ago with Thompson and Matthews being in the competition to start. They end up dinged up and Brady has stepped in and done pretty well (yes, its just preseason). But if he holds on to the starting gig over two guys the team traded up to draft...I think that says a bit for how he has improved.

Any updates on the backup RB situation?

According to HC McCarthy today: RB Brandon Jackson has a serious ankle sprain and there is no timetable for his return.

If healthy, Jackson is the second RB. Not sure who is next in line, Sutton or Wynn.

Sutton got a few looks on Friday. Looked more than decent. The word is now that Wynn will get a heavy workload on Thursday night against the Titans. With Jackson's ankle injury, I think there's a real possibility they keep 4 RBs.

I think they will keep 4 no matter what to start the season. They are not going to give up a guy like Sutton so that another team can reel him in. They are looking for the change of pace back and right now Sutton fits that better than any RB in camp.

How about a review of Q1 2009 in the Pack's offseason? Here are some notes I've made about who they added, lost and looked at. A chance to review some moves they did - and didn't - make before we see the real results in a couple weeks.

(Much of this is copy/pasted and I think I mostly attributed quotes/sources accurately.)

Bolded the more notable stuff.

January

They fired all their defensive coaches other than the quality control guy and Winston Moss. They took a few weeks to find a new defensive coordinator and were criticized by some for moving too slowly, with their candidates taking other jobs in the meantime. Mike Nolan went to Denver, and Gregg Williams agreed to join the Saints’ staff on Jan. 15. This made Jim Haslett the (supposed) leading candidate for the Packers job. But Dom Capers was interviewed on the weekend of the championship playoff games, and his hiring as defensive coordinator was announced on the following Monday morning, Jan. 19. Capers spent the 2008 season as a secondary specialist and assistant to head coach Bill Belichick in New England.

With Capers’s hiring, McCarthy announced that GB would transition to a 3-4 defense. Speculative discussion immediately focused on whether Ryan Pickett could perform better than average at nose tackle in this alignment, and what Aaron Kampman’s role will be. Some fans thought Kampman was too small to play any role in the 3-4 and should be traded.

After scouting the Senior Bowl at the end of Jan., some players that Green Bay had supposedly interviewed extensively were Ricky Jean-Francois (DT from LSU), Richmond end/linebacker Lawrence Sidbury, Boston College defensive tackle B.J. Raji and USC linebackers Brian Cushing and Clay Matthews.

• The list of players having met with the Packers according to Railbird Central includes:

o B.J. Raji -- defensive tackle, Boston College

o Clay Matthews -- linebacker, USC

o Scott McKillop, linebacker Pitt

o Brian Cushing -- linebacker USC

o Lawrence Sidbury -- linebacker/end, Richmond

o Eric Kettani -- fullback, Navy

o Ron Brace -- defensive tackle, Boston College

o James Davis -- running back, Clemson

o Mohamed Massquoi -- wide receiver, Georgia

o Zach Follett -- linebacker, California

o Cody Brown -- linebacker/end, UConn

o Darry Beckwith -- linebacker, LSU

o Hunter Cantwell -- quarterback, Louisville

o Jared Bronson -- tight end, Central Washington

o Dan Gay -- tackle, Baylor

On Jan. 26, it is reported that the Packers will sign Kevin Greene to coach their outside linebackers (Winston Moss, the holdover from last year’s staff, will continue to work with the ILBs).

On Jan. 27, the Packers announced that Oakland Raiders defensive backs coach Darren Perry, a former Steelers defensive back and assistant coach, agreed to become Green Bay's safeties coach. “Perry's addition makes it likely that Joe Whitt Jr., the former defensive quality control coach, will instruct the cornerbacks, and Mike McCarthy's staff may be close to completion. Unless an assistant defensive line coach is named to help Mike Trgovac (who was Carolina’s defensive coordinator in 2008), then the strength position could be the final piece of the puzzle. Mark Lovat could be promoted from within for that position.” - jsonline

The Green Bay Packers have scouted University of Louisiana-Lafayette wide receiver Jason Chery according to the Daily Advertiser of Lafayette, Louisiana.

The Packers’ coaching staff says Kampman will play OLB in the base 3-4 defense. Harrell will probably be used as a DE.

Feb.

In a mock draft on FootballGuys forums, I took Knowshon Moreno at #9 (Feb. 3) and GOT PEEPS RAGIN

OT Mark Tauscher, DE Mike Montgomery, and DT Colin Cole are all unrestricted free agents. They may re-sign, but all will have and take their chance to “test the market”

The Combine begins in Indianapolis. “The Green Bay Packers were one of several teams that met with Tennessee State offensive tackle Cornelius Lewis, whose two positive marijuana tests got him kicked off the team at Florida State. At 6-4, 332 pounds, Lewis is the No. 11 overall ranked tackle in this year's draft class according to Scott Wright's DraftCountdown.com.”

Feb. 23 - Greg Bedard of of jsonline reports from the Combine:

Add Penn State OLB Aaron Maybin to the list of the players the Packers interviewed.

The Packers were about the only team not to express an interest in the best 3-4 defensive end on the free-agent market, Chris Canty of the Dallas Cowboys.

As for the other supposed top 3-4 end, Igor Olshansky of the Chargers, I'm told by more than a few people that there's a reason why the Chargers made no effort to keep him -- he's known to be lazy and people think he doesn't care about the right things. From what I heard, he is not "Packer people" so the team would be wise to avoid him.

“The Packers would be wise, if they haven't already, to take Alabama OT Andre Smith off their board completely. Trust me on this.”

Feb. 24 – Railbird Central lists a few more players the Packers spoke with at the Combine: Stanford DE Pannel Egboh, Rice WR Jarrett Dillard, Ball State QB Nate Davis, Southern Miss. LB Gerald McGrath, TCU ILB Jason Phillips. Packers scouts also attended a private workout by Wyoming RB Devin Moore (considered a good third-down back).

Feb. 27 – Free agency begins for the year. The Packers don’t sign anyone right away.

Feb. 29 – Colin Cole signs with Seattle for five years at $21 mil, $6 mil guaranteed.

Chris Canty signs with NYG for six years at $42 mil, $17.25 mil guaranteed. The Packers had been interested but hadn’t been able to get him in town for a visit.

Mar. 1 - Peter King: “Weirdest thing I heard over the weekend: Pack gave their coaches the weekend off. They'll be in today, and this week, to work on the free agents. I'm told that has meaning -- that the Packers want to send the message that free agency spending these days is profligate, and they'll get in when the Dan Snyders get out.”

Mar. 3 – Mike Adams, a safety who played for Cleveland last season, is visiting Green Bay. He is viewed as a special teams upgrade.

Packers FB John Kuhn is visiting the Cardinals and Bengals.

Jsonline – “Packers free agent DE Mike Montgomery will be in Atlanta Tuesday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The Packers have no interest in re-signing Montgomery because he's a 4-3 end and there's no place for him in their new 3-4 scheme.”

The agents for San Diego's Igor Olshansky, Baltimore's Marques Douglas and New England's Mike Wright (all DEs) have all had preliminary discussions with the Packers, although no visits have been set up.

Mar. 4 – Detroit signs former Packers DT Grady Jackson. Indy re-signs former Packers DT Daniel Muir.

The Packers want Dallas FA LB Kevin Burnett to visit Green Bay. He has been to Oakland and San Diego already.

The Packers have been in touch with the agent of Arizona LB Clark Haggans.

The Packers are pursuing Steelers safety Anthony Smith.

Mar. 6 – Safety Mike Adams decided to re-sign with Cleveland rather than Green Bay.

Mar. 7 – The Packers sign former Steelers safety and restricted free agent Anthony Smith. It is their first free agent signing of the year.

Mar. 10 – The Packers are supposedly interested in Nebraska T Lydon Murtha.

Mar. 11 – Former Cowboys LB Kevin Burnett signs with San Diego after visiting several teams and receiving interest from others, including GB.

The Packers have offered their own UFA DE Mike Montgomery a one-year contract. Montgomery is still weighing his options.

Mar. 13 – The Packers are high on Georgia Tech DE Michael Johnson according to “profootballtalk.com”

Mar. 17 – The Packers match the offer sheet CB Jarrett Bush received from Tennessee. Bush is signed to a 3-year deal worth $4.5 mil with a $1m signing bonus. Jsonline adds: “The New York Jets showed interest first, then the Tennessee Titans, then the Baltimore Ravens. After Bush visited Tennessee and was getting ready to go to Baltimore, Cleveland joined in. Then Tampa Bay and New Orleans both called wanting to get Bush in for a visit.”

Mar. 19 – jsonline reports: “Recognizing that they just don't have enough bodies at defensive end, the Packers re-signed Mike Montgomery, an unrestricted free agent who had received only slight interest in the market. Restricted free agent Jason Hunter, who will convert to LB from DE this year, signed his $1.01 million tender offer.”

Mar. 24 – Free agent OL Duke Preston (formerly of Buffalo) is attracting the Packers’ interest. Oakland and Buffalo are also interested. Preston visited GB last week.

Mar. 26 – So far, the Packers have not laid off any employees as some other NFL teams have.

Mar. 27 – The Packers sign C/G Duke Preston, a free agent who started 11 games for Buffalo last season. He is 6’5” and 325 lbs. He played center last year, but has also played some guard and right tackle. Terms of the deal weren’t announced. Preston is the first UFA from another team that the Packers have signed this year.

Mar. 31 – Preston’s contract is $2mil for 2 years, with no signing bonus. FB John Kuhn is continuing to work out at the Packers’ facility even though he is a free agent, and it sounds likely that he will re-sign with GB.

Didn't look like Wynn got too much work last night, or that he was effective at all.
The announcers talked like he or Lumpkin were the final cut and Sutton already made the team. Gannon could be wrong though.
Id agree.Wynn got quite a bit of work in the return game early and was the primary back in the 1st quarter at least it seemed. Was trying to keep up with my 4 year old at the game though so I did not always notice.Funniest today is reading a few boards and all the Thompson haters are out in full force acting like last night mattered.2nd, 3rd and 4th stringers or worse for most of the game and people act as if the Packers are in trouble. I guess the Colts are worried too since Cinci took it to them.Add to that the Titans starting Oline played for a bit longer last night to get Young some more reps with the starters (and because some of the Titans Oline had not played as much in preseason yet)...pretty funny really. Its the 4th preseason game. Most all starters were done after the first series on both sides of the ball. The Packers rarely blitzed...played mostly a soft zone...and seemed content just letting Brohm throw 5 yard passes.

According to PFT, rumor is that the Pack will cut Brian Brohm.
GBPress Gazette is claiming neither he nor his agent have been informed of this as of yet. Some of the others have already leaked as far as which players have been informed they are gone. They did trade Moll to the Ravens for a DB.

Im surprised they cut both RBs...I guess they think Jackson will be fine.

I really liked Lumpkin last year but he did not show a thing this year.

Sutton looked pretty good at times...wonder if they hope he clears and makes the practice squad.

Same with Meredith for the OL.

Acquired Derek Martin, a safety from Balt for Moll.

Probably hoping for that. Meredith started out great at minicamps and early in training camp but appeared to plateau, then drop off a bit. Sutton might get picked up elsewhere. Either way, he doesn't strike me as a guy that you'll ever really regret cutting.

Agreed on Sutton. He was smallish but not really that fast.Just a hard worker more than anything it seemed...probably why fans liked him so much.Makes me think they are confident that Jackson's injury is not too bad.

According to Rob Demovsky, Bustin Harrell and Pat Lee have been placed on the IR.
And that should spell the end of Justin Harrell's career with the Packers. Just couldn't shake the injury bug. And looks like Pat Lee was a wasted early pick as well.

Yup...though, Harrell is cheap and they obviously still want him as they did not just come to an injury settlement with him and release him.Giving him one year to come back and show he can get over the back. If he can't by the draft or so...id say he will be given his outright release.Lee is interesting..>I don't recall him having any extensive injury history...yet he just cant stay healthy.

Damn shame about Lee. I really liked him coming out of Auburn.

I think signing Jeff Garcia would be a good move. I don't like keeping 2 rb's and 3 fullbacks. It doesn't make any sense to me. I know they are all talented but you can't waste a roster spot on a fullback just because he is a good special teams player. They will have a ton of linebackers on their roster who can play special teams. The Anthony Smith cut to me is shocking. The guy was arguably their best db in the preseason after Woodson. So they keep an injured Rouse, and a beat up Bigby. They must believe the kid from Baltimore can come in and play right away. I also think they gave up on Brohm to early, but this team needs to win now. Time will tell.

I don't think Lee is a wasted pick. Looking back at last year, James Jones probably should've been put on IR. Let Lee recover for next year. In the meantime (I assume) Underwood looks better prepared to play corner or safety.

Did Sutton do anything that made you say "wow, no way we can let this guy go!" I don't think so - he looks about as good as Noah Herron, which is to say certainly not above replacement level. Sutton did do enough to suggest (not prove) he can play in the NFL. Good luck to him.

Smith, I don't know, took too many chances, couldn't make reads and calls?

Martin wasn't going to get any better. He was a good fifth WR but he gets 15-20 catches per year and was going to get $1 million. If Swain looks like he can become a better player it's wise to keep him over Martin.

Brohm suxx.

All true.

Smith surprised me. I though he looked pretty good out there, making plays and I can't remember too many times that he made major mistakes. I must not have been watching close enough.

Brohm surprised me a little too. I thought they'd give him another year, but I guess if they really didn't believe in him then cutting your loss on moving is the right move. Have to figure a QB is signed before the end of the Holiday weekend.

I like Martin, but I didn't think he looked that good on special teams, and he'll never be anything better than what we've seen from him already.

I hope Sutton makes it to the practice squad. I like Wynn, but I don't trust him staying healthy, and while Jackson has impressed me at times, overall he's looked mediocre.

Keeping three FBs is definitely not the norm, but they all deserve a roster spot, IMO. Johnson is a beast, and I could see him being one of the best blocking FBs in the league real soon. Kuhn and Hall being special teamers is important, and I don't have a problem keeping guys just for that. I know it thins the roster, but special teams is a huge part of the game that often gets overlooked.

Sutton to Carolina.

Lumpkin clears waivers and is signed to the Packers practice squad.

Brohm cleared waivers and is now between the Packers practice squad an possibly one other PS offer.

Meredith is between Packers PS and the Bucs I think I read.

Per PFT, the Pack have filled out their practice squad:

Brian Brohm

Kregg Lumpkin

Cyril Obiozior

Jake Allen

Trevor Ford

Jamon Meredith

Ronald Talley

Anthony Toribio

Packers release Rouse....

Packers released S Aaron Rouse.

Quite a surprise, and a statement about Rouse's ability. The 2007 third-round pick started just four days ago and had nine tackles but is now looking for a job. Matt Giordano was signed to take his place.

Well, the guy has done very little in Green Bay. Plus, every time he does play, he ends up hurt. So, it's not a big loss.My only beef is why do it this week when Collins/Bigby are already hurt? I know Rouse was dinged as well, but what do you do now? If Jarret Bush comes anywhere near the starting lineup, it will end very badly.

I still have no idea why they cut Anthony Smith and kept Rouse & Bush. Seemed like a terrible decsion at the time and looks even worse now.

Anone know if Collins is playing this week? Will they move Woodson or Harris to safety in the base defense to get their best defenders on the field (not Bush).
