How about a review of Q1 2009 in the Pack's offseason? Here are some notes I've made about who they added, lost and looked at. A chance to review some moves they did - and didn't - make before we see the real results in a couple weeks.
(Much of this is copy/pasted and I think I mostly attributed quotes/sources accurately.)
Bolded the more notable stuff.
January
They fired all their defensive coaches other than the quality control guy and Winston Moss. They took a few weeks to find a new defensive coordinator and were criticized by some for moving too slowly, with their candidates taking other jobs in the meantime. Mike Nolan went to Denver, and Gregg Williams agreed to join the Saints’ staff on Jan. 15. This made Jim Haslett the (supposed) leading candidate for the Packers job. But Dom Capers was interviewed on the weekend of the championship playoff games, and his hiring as defensive coordinator was announced on the following Monday morning, Jan. 19. Capers spent the 2008 season as a secondary specialist and assistant to head coach Bill Belichick in New England.
With Capers’s hiring, McCarthy announced that GB would transition to a 3-4 defense. Speculative discussion immediately focused on whether Ryan Pickett could perform better than average at nose tackle in this alignment, and what Aaron Kampman’s role will be. Some fans thought Kampman was too small to play any role in the 3-4 and should be traded.
After scouting the Senior Bowl at the end of Jan., some players that Green Bay had supposedly interviewed extensively were Ricky Jean-Francois (DT from LSU), Richmond end/linebacker Lawrence Sidbury, Boston College defensive tackle B.J. Raji and USC linebackers Brian Cushing and Clay Matthews.
• The list of players having met with the Packers according to Railbird Central includes:
o B.J. Raji -- defensive tackle, Boston College
o Clay Matthews -- linebacker, USC
o Scott McKillop, linebacker Pitt
o Brian Cushing -- linebacker USC
o Lawrence Sidbury -- linebacker/end, Richmond
o Eric Kettani -- fullback, Navy
o Ron Brace -- defensive tackle, Boston College
o James Davis -- running back, Clemson
o Mohamed Massquoi -- wide receiver, Georgia
o Zach Follett -- linebacker, California
o Cody Brown -- linebacker/end, UConn
o Darry Beckwith -- linebacker, LSU
o Hunter Cantwell -- quarterback, Louisville
o Jared Bronson -- tight end, Central Washington
o Dan Gay -- tackle, Baylor
On Jan. 26, it is reported that the Packers will sign Kevin Greene to coach their outside linebackers (Winston Moss, the holdover from last year’s staff, will continue to work with the ILBs).
On Jan. 27, the Packers announced that Oakland Raiders defensive backs coach Darren Perry, a former Steelers defensive back and assistant coach, agreed to become Green Bay's safeties coach. “Perry's addition makes it likely that Joe Whitt Jr., the former defensive quality control coach, will instruct the cornerbacks, and Mike McCarthy's staff may be close to completion. Unless an assistant defensive line coach is named to help Mike Trgovac (who was Carolina’s defensive coordinator in 2008), then the strength position could be the final piece of the puzzle. Mark Lovat could be promoted from within for that position.” - jsonline
The Green Bay Packers have scouted University of Louisiana-Lafayette wide receiver Jason Chery according to the Daily Advertiser of Lafayette, Louisiana.
The Packers’ coaching staff says Kampman will play OLB in the base 3-4 defense. Harrell will probably be used as a DE.
Feb.
In a mock draft on FootballGuys forums, I took Knowshon Moreno at #9 (Feb. 3) and GOT PEEPS RAGIN
OT Mark Tauscher, DE Mike Montgomery, and DT Colin Cole are all unrestricted free agents. They may re-sign, but all will have and take their chance to “test the market”
The Combine begins in Indianapolis. “The Green Bay Packers were one of several teams that met with Tennessee State offensive tackle Cornelius Lewis, whose two positive marijuana tests got him kicked off the team at Florida State. At 6-4, 332 pounds, Lewis is the No. 11 overall ranked tackle in this year's draft class according to Scott Wright's DraftCountdown.com.”
Feb. 23 - Greg Bedard of of jsonline reports from the Combine:
Add Penn State OLB Aaron Maybin to the list of the players the Packers interviewed.
The Packers were about the only team not to express an interest in the best 3-4 defensive end on the free-agent market, Chris Canty of the Dallas Cowboys.
As for the other supposed top 3-4 end, Igor Olshansky of the Chargers, I'm told by more than a few people that there's a reason why the Chargers made no effort to keep him -- he's known to be lazy and people think he doesn't care about the right things. From what I heard, he is not "Packer people" so the team would be wise to avoid him.
“The Packers would be wise, if they haven't already, to take Alabama OT Andre Smith off their board completely. Trust me on this.”
Feb. 24 – Railbird Central lists a few more players the Packers spoke with at the Combine: Stanford DE Pannel Egboh, Rice WR Jarrett Dillard, Ball State QB Nate Davis, Southern Miss. LB Gerald McGrath, TCU ILB Jason Phillips. Packers scouts also attended a private workout by Wyoming RB Devin Moore (considered a good third-down back).
Feb. 27 – Free agency begins for the year. The Packers don’t sign anyone right away.
Feb. 29 – Colin Cole signs with Seattle for five years at $21 mil, $6 mil guaranteed.
Chris Canty signs with NYG for six years at $42 mil, $17.25 mil guaranteed. The Packers had been interested but hadn’t been able to get him in town for a visit.
Mar. 1 - Peter King: “Weirdest thing I heard over the weekend: Pack gave their coaches the weekend off. They'll be in today, and this week, to work on the free agents. I'm told that has meaning -- that the Packers want to send the message that free agency spending these days is profligate, and they'll get in when the Dan Snyders get out.”
Mar. 3 – Mike Adams, a safety who played for Cleveland last season, is visiting Green Bay. He is viewed as a special teams upgrade.
Packers FB John Kuhn is visiting the Cardinals and Bengals.
Jsonline – “Packers free agent DE Mike Montgomery will be in Atlanta Tuesday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The Packers have no interest in re-signing Montgomery because he's a 4-3 end and there's no place for him in their new 3-4 scheme.”
The agents for San Diego's Igor Olshansky, Baltimore's Marques Douglas and New England's Mike Wright (all DEs) have all had preliminary discussions with the Packers, although no visits have been set up.
Mar. 4 – Detroit signs former Packers DT Grady Jackson. Indy re-signs former Packers DT Daniel Muir.
The Packers want Dallas FA LB Kevin Burnett to visit Green Bay. He has been to Oakland and San Diego already.
The Packers have been in touch with the agent of Arizona LB Clark Haggans.
The Packers are pursuing Steelers safety Anthony Smith.
Mar. 6 – Safety Mike Adams decided to re-sign with Cleveland rather than Green Bay.
Mar. 7 – The Packers sign former Steelers safety and restricted free agent Anthony Smith. It is their first free agent signing of the year.
Mar. 10 – The Packers are supposedly interested in Nebraska T Lydon Murtha.
Mar. 11 – Former Cowboys LB Kevin Burnett signs with San Diego after visiting several teams and receiving interest from others, including GB.
The Packers have offered their own UFA DE Mike Montgomery a one-year contract. Montgomery is still weighing his options.
Mar. 13 – The Packers are high on Georgia Tech DE Michael Johnson according to “profootballtalk.com”
Mar. 17 – The Packers match the offer sheet CB Jarrett Bush received from Tennessee. Bush is signed to a 3-year deal worth $4.5 mil with a $1m signing bonus. Jsonline adds: “The New York Jets showed interest first, then the Tennessee Titans, then the Baltimore Ravens. After Bush visited Tennessee and was getting ready to go to Baltimore, Cleveland joined in. Then Tampa Bay and New Orleans both called wanting to get Bush in for a visit.”
Mar. 19 – jsonline reports: “Recognizing that they just don't have enough bodies at defensive end, the Packers re-signed Mike Montgomery, an unrestricted free agent who had received only slight interest in the market. Restricted free agent Jason Hunter, who will convert to LB from DE this year, signed his $1.01 million tender offer.”
Mar. 24 – Free agent OL Duke Preston (formerly of Buffalo) is attracting the Packers’ interest. Oakland and Buffalo are also interested. Preston visited GB last week.
Mar. 26 – So far, the Packers have not laid off any employees as some other NFL teams have.
Mar. 27 – The Packers sign C/G Duke Preston, a free agent who started 11 games for Buffalo last season. He is 6’5” and 325 lbs. He played center last year, but has also played some guard and right tackle. Terms of the deal weren’t announced. Preston is the first UFA from another team that the Packers have signed this year.
Mar. 31 – Preston’s contract is $2mil for 2 years, with no signing bonus. FB John Kuhn is continuing to work out at the Packers’ facility even though he is a free agent, and it sounds likely that he will re-sign with GB.
