It's about picking the right guys, not how how many of them you pick.
This is sage advice.
yup...18 man roster is definately the way to go. Lots of kickers is important too.
All position players have a chance of scoring next to no points. A WR can go a game without a catch. A RB can be contained. Kickers, on the other hand will always score points every week, unless his team gets shutout which is incredibly rare.

Every year only a handful of teams attempt the many-kickers strategy and every year at least one of them goes very deep in the contest. As mentioned above, they regularly score points, rarely get injured, every week some kicker has a huge 5 FG game, and most importantly they're cheap! It makes no sense to take any fewer than 7 or 8 kickers IMO.

Will the contest have real time scoring this year?
I doubt FBG will be providing it, if that's what you mean. I don't know if OC has plans to resurrect his live scoring app, although I know he had concerns about the legality of receiving money for it, and couldn't justify keeping it up for free. I think some people set up a free MFL league last year which allowed them to get realtime scores, not sure if that's an option.

Hey Guys,We're shooting for mid to later August. Part of what makes the contest challenging is having really good salary numbers for you guys to work with and we want to make sure we get those dialed in to make it as difficult as possible for you. Hope to get it earlier but it's definitely something we won't rush to throw out there just to have it if it's not fully ready. And for what it's worth, I think our contest is the most underrated thing we do. It's worth the cost of the Insider Subscription just for the contest. But it's our way of saying thanks to the folks that subscribe. And a nice perk.Be looking for it.J

For now, it's looking like* identical rules to last year and a probable release date of Aug 8. More info as it becomes available. But hold on, that's not all. I'm about to release a beta version of an entirely different (additional) contest! No, make that 19 more contests throughout the season! Keep an eye on the Shark Pool for more info.* - not a guarantee
PLEASE take an extra week if needed to set the pricing. It will definately help diversify the rosters if we don't have too many bargains available due to late player movement.

I guess this means the 8/8 DD mentioned on the first page is off the table :(

**No one (except QG) cares about your rooster.**
Why doesn't anyone care about my rooster?Roosters get no love.
I think that was an intentional goof. But really it should say "score". Rosters are a key part of strategy discussion after the rosters are set. It is people's weekly scores that no one actually cares about. Except for QG!
:bowtie:Can't wait Can't wait Can't wait.-QG

this will be my first time in the contest, cant wait...do teams that take a.p. and cj usually finish high?
Don't listen to those advising multiple PKs on your roster. They never get hurt so one is plenty. However, you must have at least five stud RBs in order to win the contest. You don't pick a roster to just advance, "you play to win the game!"

Last year yellowdog set up a MFL site where you could load your roster for live scoring. Pretty simple, so if you wanted to do it.. just create a free league and load your players.

Looks like the 2011 rules have been posted:http://subscribers.footballguys.com/2011/11contestrules.phpDoes this mean we're still on schedule for the contest to launch tomorrow?I skimmed through the rules and didn't see any changes from last year. Could still be a very different contest depending on the distribution of prices, can't wait to see how they shake out.
I noticed that too. Haven't made the $ yet. Time to break through the week 13 barrier or bust early.Anyone who hasn't played, this is often more interesting to follow than my home league. Pick your players then play the if only game all season.

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but is it too much to ask to just pick a date? Just say, "Guys, the contest is going live on ________." And then make sure you hit that deadline. This "mid to late August but maybe sooner" stuff is frustrating. I don't care if it doesn't start until August 31, as long as we all know that's when it's going to start.

eh....the way people get nuts here with missed deadlines, I would tread lightly here if I were Joe.

They do have a history of missed deadlines, so I understand his reluctance. But imo the way you correct a history of missed deadlines is to start meeting your deadlines, not to stop setting deadlines. There's no reason they can't announce a date the contest will launch and then actually launch the contest that day.

Of course the other way is to figure out your date, and then add a week if you are running out of time.... Consistently missing by the same margin gives you the fudge factor to apply. :P

I think the logic in this thread is that the sooner the player costs are listed the more potential for bargains to be found. The belief of some here (in the thread) is that is advantageous to the conscientous players as many many many entries are done last minute or entered once early and left as is.

I can see thier point, but also think that this year starting later is much more appropriate as players are still being signed and even traded. There also may be more injuries than usual with the late practice start and the hectic pace.

I agree with this. If it isn't clear from my earlier posts, I don't care when the contest starts, I just think it would be nice to know. Just say, "The contest starts August ##" and then make sure it actually starts that day. I don't think that's too much to ask, but it is what it is.
