*** Official 2013 Seattle Seahawks **** (1 Viewer)

I would actually like to see them ditch the Red Bryant experiment. We just don't generate enough pass rush with him in there.
I hear you on this one, but Red is paid, signed, and not going anywhere. He's part of the "family core" in Seattle. I feel strongly that the team can count on Bryant to be a full effort guy. He's not going to relax now that he's been been paid. Further, I wonder how important the pass rush is when talking about Bryant. Really, the Seahawks just led the NFL in scoring defense. They did something right. Was Bryant a hindrance to fielding an effective defense? Was his lack of a pass rush on early downs really that much of a problem? I think the platoon of Bryant and Irvin was something they can build on. Both bring unique skills to the team.

They didn't stop the run very well with him in there....which then makes me question was it really his foot or was it him. Maybe just move him back inside. :shrug:They had something like 34 sacks this year with 22 or so coming from Bruce/Clem (around that number)..... No other player had more than 3 sacks. I know they lead the league in scoring defense but they didn't seem nearly as dominant as I had hoped. I don't think Jones is coming back..... hope they go after Henry Melton.

Anyone have thoughts on the draft?
Too far away to know. I have general roster thoughts. These could be severely impacted before the draft via free agency. My gut says significant changes in the defensive line. I hate to say it, but they have to move forward with the idea that Clemons won't be back. If that's the case I doubt they have enough confidence in Irvin to go forward with him being the full time Leo. I bet they keep Irvin in the rotation at LDE with Bryant as the pass rush specialist. Along with a missing a DE in Clemons I think they look for an upgrade at the pass rushing specialist DT. Jones showed us he could make a difference, but the question becomes whether or not they want to sink cap space into him to retain him. Also, how much can they depend on Jones health? And then there's Branch. He could be gone too. If Clemons, Branch, and Jones are all missing from the rotation that's a lot to replace. Two other veterans to replace are Hill and Trufant. I think there's a good chance that Hill comes back at a cut rate. I would be for keeping Hill. He still makes plays, especially against the run. Trufant might be done. IMO they move forward with the current personnel in the defensive backfield assuming Thurmond is good to go.
I hope they address the DL and the WR position. WR is deep this year so I think a 2nd round pick there would be nice for additional depth. I don't trust Sydney Rice to stay healthy. They need a DT who can rush the passer and another DE. I would actually like to see them ditch the Red Bryant experiment. We just don't generate enough pass rush with him in there.Gotta address Hill as well... I hope Trufant is done.... I think Lane/Maxwell could fill in for him.
Gotta address the fact that you need to man up kid and eat all that crow that you deserve. I love the fact that you just try to look the other way from all of it. What happened to the FAILcons?? And what time are the Seahawks playing again Sunday??? :)

I would also be interested in hearing about possible Flynn destinations... Jax? KC? ARZ? JETS (if they hire the Hawks cap guy)? What do you think we would get for him? 4th round pick? At first I felt like he would only net a 6th or 7th .... but some media guys are saying anywhere from 2nd - 4th

Well, lookeee here! The coward finally shows up and pretends nothing has happened. What are your thoughts on the Seahawks chances this weekend? What about the Falcons?

Wait don't you mean FAILcons?? I've been asking him what time the Seahawks play on Sunday, but apparently he can't answer

I would be interested in hearing why you decided to disappear and ignore everything after you were so arrogant and confident the past few weeks. Can't handle the truth?

Honestly I don't think we move Flynn. Maybe it's just me, but I have to think that Flynn is worth more than a 4th rounder unless there is some aging veteran that wants to come in and mentor/backup for the league minimum. Now if we were able to get a 2nd or an early 3rd (maybe a 3rd + a 5th or something that equals a high 2nd) I think we're talking. As for draft needs, let's first take a quick peak at who is a free agent and who we might want to re-sign.

Key FA list:

Alan Branch - I just read that he's interested in re-signing in Seattle. Maybe we get a discount?

Jason Jones - Seemed to be a solid performer up until he was nicked up. He was less effective at that point but I'd still be interested in bringing him back for the right price.

Leroy Hill - I've got to think he's worthy depth, but we really need to add in youth here because he was a step slow.

Steven Hauschka - Goner IMO. He had two XPs blocked this year and I've never liked his trajectory or his distance.

Marcus Trufant - This is the end of the line for Tru. We need to move forward with Thurmond (if he can stay healthy) or Lane.

Draft needs I've got to think are DE, DT, LB, WR, TE, CB, K

As a side note, is it officially time to start up a Seahawks 2013 offseason thread?

Harvin and A-Train .... great additions thus far. After the hawks win the superbowl suddenly you will see 1,000+ fans posting ITT.

The Seahawks are in full on lets buy a Superbowl before we have to pay Wilson, Sherman, and Wagner mode, and I think it's exactly the right move.

Up next, an upgrade to Giacomini please?

Has any team ever gone from bottom to top rung in such a short amount of time? The Rams come to mind, and the Pats when Brady took over for Bledsoe. Can't remember any others.

What are your hopes for the draft? Originally I thought DT in the second.....Im hoping for a WOLBer, TE or WR. Yes, WR....more depth, develop him and cut Rice next year.

I wouldn't be surprised to see DE in the 2nd despite the offseason. Don't see how they can afford Avril or Bennett longterm, actually they can't which is why they got short deals I assume.I agree with you that Sidney Rice is looking like a prime target for salary cap cuts, so WR wouldn't be a bad play in the 2nd round either imo. Rice has made some great catches, but all in all its hard to justify him as a 7+ mill per year WR. Zach Miller also comes to mind as a potential salary cap cut given his salary and Carroll's history of not using TEs as much more than blockers, which is unfortunate since Zach Miller is elite imo. It wasnt until late in the season that Wilson was allowed to audible and make his own reads that Miller started to become a focus. The guy is always open, but thats just not Pete's style of offense for some reason. Best case scenario for me, a startable RG falls to them in the 2nd (not sure if thats even possible) and Wilson unleashes hell when he has a wide open Harvin, Miller, and Rice to throw to all day.Do you see Golden Tate as a potential cut? High draft pick, natural football player (has made some fine inducing hits), But my first thought when getting Harvin was not goodbye Washington but goodbye Tate.

The Seahawks just signed a 27 year old DE coming off a 9 sack season. And it's the 3rd biggest signing of the week. To a team that's already *really* good.

They've had a good week but not a lot of championships are won in March.
Right, but we can still celebrate the good weeks in March. I think only one of us is celebrating the championship, and he certainly doesn't speak for all of us Seahawks fans.

Who's crowning them Superbowl champions? Besides Vegas?

Unfortunately, that guy didn't come back and take his lumps here for all the #### he has talked over the past year. I thought he might, but alas...Actually, at times he has made some astute observations regarding the Seahawks and clearly knows the team well but that is far outweighed by his idiotic discourse here. I suspect that is his goal. Too bad. Most of us Seattle fans are fairly reasonable.

Well even still, can you blame him/us? Given the Seahawks recent history. We knocked off the defending Superbowl champs in whats considered one of the biggest upsets in playoff history but other than last year, that was it since the Seattle/Pittsburgh Superbowl. Mix in the Sonics leaving, the Mariners being the Mariners, the Sounder playoff choke artists, etc.. this town is gripping at this point.

Throw in underachieving Husky teams, too.Meh. Every major sports city has underachieving teams, lousy teams and teams that choke(I'll give you the egregious Sonics debacle). Yes, the Seahawks' success has rejuvenated Seattle sports fans, but that doesn't justify ITS's schtick. It's too much. Again, I think that is his goal anyway, and many have taken the bait.GOHAWKS

A lot of new faces around here.... welcome. :football:
Please, can you dial it down a few notches this year?
My brotha.....does Richard Sherman dial down?
Just a request. I would rather talk about strategy and analysis. I think the Seahawks are a fascinating study right now. There are tons of reasons fans of other teams are going to dislike Seattle. IMO there's no reasons to fuel that fire. Seems pointless and only distracts from discussions worth having. Just read this on Fieldgulls a few days ago...

Seattle Seahawks, The future most hated team in the NFL.

It is going to get bad. If you did not see ESPN first take with Richard Sherman attacking Skip Bayless, go watch it. This alone will bring the hate upon us as a whole, but really there will be plenty of trash to be talked about Seattle

*Our defense is a bunch of head hunting dirty players

*Richard Sherman cheated

*Richard Sherman is an arrogant pompous #####.

*We have an inferior gimmick QB

*We have thugs on our team

*Pete Carroll cheated at USC

*Pete Carroll runs up the score

*We are from Seattle, that's a stupid place.

*The 49ers are better

*The refs are on our side (because of the GB game), possibly the most absurd one

*The Seahawks are overrated/over hyped

*Its not even a real bird

*Our collection of Superb Owls leaves something to be desired.

*Future: We only have 1 Superb Owl in our cage.

*Future: Both of those Super Bowl games were against poor teams and the Hawks really weren't that good.

These are all things we are about to hear, for a good long while. I do not look forward to some of it. But it is going to be rather interesting** to be 'ThePatriots' or 'The Yankees'. Just to be clear, i do not give a rats ### about any of these jabs. they are not things i see wrong with us, really they are just things we can infer will be said to us.

Strap in and get ready to politely endure some serious #### talk. Don't let it get under your skin, GO HAWKS!

**By interesting i mean ####### awesome.

Again, I have no interesting in talking ####. Its a cop out. Its a waste of time and a sure fire way of letting someone else know you have nothing. You've quit. You've lost, and its all you have to fall back on.

Like I said, it was a request. I'll do my best not to bring it up again.

Question:

How worried should we be about the possibility of Malcolm Smith starting at OLB? I keep having repeated visions of Adrian Pederson making him look silly. I know Hill is gone for good, and I'm going to miss him. He fought of blocks and put ball carriers on the ground.

I worry about his lack of size, can he hold up? Like you mentioned ...he needs work on tackling. I'm guessing the address this position with one of their first few picks.

Agreed, but I won't be surprised to see them put it off until the fourth or fifth round.

Lbers are like rbs on offense anymore. I agree and hope its a 4th or 5th. I would like to see a TE and DT with the first two picks. Either Gavin Escobar or Jordan Reed please.

I follow Davis Hsu on twitter. Dude is all over the Seattle Seahawks cap scenarios like nobody else. He's convinced that Seattle cuts some salary on offense. If that's true my gut says it will be Rice or Miller.

Sadly too much of that was happening in his house.

I just don't seeing them cutting Miller, he's a good blocker and came on really strong in the playoffs.
This is an excellent analysis of the Seahawks current salary cap situation. I agree that Miller is a perfect fit for this offense because he's an able and willing blocker. Those types of TEs are becoming few and far between in the modern NFL (seriously, how many of the current TEs in this years draft crop are more than just oversized WRs?). Regardless, IMO the Seahawks are going to remain a run first team if they can, and Miller is an exceptional and necessary component. From the article:

To put it plainly though, I don't see the Seahawks spending 66% of their salary cap on offense ($80M to $40M or a 2:1 Ratio) as the 2013 season kicks off and the 53 man roster is finalized in August/September. I believe Seattle will spend about $130M in cap dollars in 2013, but I believe the final percentage committed to offense to be under 60% (but north of 55%).
So the question remains, where can they cut some salary on offense? Or is the author wrong? I tend to think he has a good point. If not Miller or Rice, it appears that taking the $4M dead money hit by releasing Flynn will net them about $2.75M is cap savings. Even if they can trade Flynn its going to be for a later round pick. At the moment it appears that whoever that pick is will have a tough time making the current roster.

Seattle Seahawks will be 'headache for defenses'

By Gregg Rosenthal
Around The League Editor

The Seattle Seahawks say they aren't worried about what wide receiver Percy Harvin is like off the field. Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell worked closely with Harvin in Minnesota and had zero problems.

Bevell's bigger challenge: Maximizing Harvin's unique skill set.

"You start thinking about all the things you can do with a player like that," Bevell told Albert Breer of NFL.com. "And now the hard part is to harness that talent."

It seems like a long time ago that the Seahawks were so lackluster on offense with Tarvaris Jackson running the show. Now they have one of the best running games in the NFL with Marshawn Lynch and Robert Turbin paired with a passing game led by Russell Wilson that will be extremely difficult for defenses to prepare for.

"That's our job, figuring out all these pieces," Bevell said. "Because even the prototypical guys have strengths and weakness, and we have to blend these guys together by using those skills and covering up those weaknesses. And Percy's gonna be a great part of it. We'll see how it blends. If you have one guy, the defense can overload to that side. And that's why it's important it's not just Percy. It's Golden (Tate), Sidney (Rice), Zach (Miller), Marshawn (Lynch) and Russell, too.

"They can pick their poison. It's gonna be a headache for defenses."

(Insert Harvin migraine joke here.)

Bevell is right. The Seahawks have a traditional vertical receiver in Rice. Miller is a complete tight end who exploded in the playoffs last season. Tate and Harvin are "movable chess pieces," to use a Greg Cosell-ism.

You can line up Harvin in so many different ways. Tate is not at Harvin's level, but he too can move around the formation.

Bevell is right: It will be challenging to harness all the talent. The only limits to the Seahawks' offense will be Bevell's creativity. He can't complain about a lack of talent.

I spent about three hours last night getting a guided tour of the VMAC with one of the players. There were a half dozen of us who got to check the whole facility out, spend about 45 minutes in one of the film rooms getting tape broken down for us, and then got to kick field goals and play around on the indoor field for a while too. It was pretty great. Aside from the look at me, the reason I thought I'd share this is because at about 8:15 last night, the player (who isn't even on offense) got a text from Russell Wilson saying he was excited to work out the next morning with him.

Everything good you hear about Russell Wilson is all true.

Holy crap. You need to share details on how you happened upon this opportunity.
