**Official 2014 MLB Regular Season-All over but the shouting (1 Viewer)

Doctor Detroit said:
Who's going to take Ryan Howard if the Phillies are going to eat his salary? I guess the Mariners could use another 1B/DH type.
yankees could use a 1B if tex goes on the DL and hes a lefty. That being said, where would he play when tex comes back? I think beltran os stuck at dh cuz of his elbow.

So, what does the general population here think about the Orioles? They're heading toward the end of a brutal 10 game WC swing and are above water on it so far.

The starting pitchers don't scare anyone but they've been fantastic on this trip so far. Which makes a strong bullpen even stronger. The bats are fine, though it'd be nice to see Davis get really hot.

Peavy dealt to the Giants for yet unnamed minor leaguers.

Heyman: peavy goes to giants for minor league pitchers #redsox #SFgiants

Edwin Escobar and Hembree from the Giants for Peavy... Even though I've read Escobar might be overrated as a prospect it is still an impressive return for Peavy IMO.

I can live with this provided Peavy doesn't continue to suck. I generally have faith in the Giants organization's ability to assess young pitchers. Escobar has a lower ceiling than some of the team's other pitching prospects and Hembree is just a minor league reliever.

Well, it's not AS bad as Wheeler for Beltran...
Deadline trades sometimes look worse in retrospect but I think that trade was defensible at the time. The Giants were clinging to a division lead with a completely punchless and Poseyless offense. It obviously couldn't have worked out worse (except for the championship the following year); the Giants went into a tailspin right after Beltran's arrival and then Beltran got hurt.

Wheeler really hasn't been that good for the Mets and Beltran has proven elsewhere that he still had some tread on his tires.

Beltran had a .920 OPS for the Giants that year.

Certainly Sabean may have mis-evaluated the team, but Beltran's performance in and of itself was seemingly worthwhile.

I usually only defend Sabean in odd numbered years but it's hard to say he misevaluated the club. They were 4 games up at the time of the trade in a year sandwiched by World Series wins.

Back to the Peavy trade, I take it as a vote of no confidence in Matt Cain's elbow.

Can you believe Jeff Francis gave up a 3-run HR in a 1-run game in the 9th?

Wait... Jeff Francis was IN a 1-run game in the 9th???

Good work, Joe.

Don't take this is any sort of fact or real rumor but I'm seeing increased twitter activity about the possibility Lester is going to the Dodgers. Of course IncarceratedBob is one of the dinks fueling the fires but just throwing it out there. Seems to be Cory Seager's name involved. Once again 95% chance this is all crap but it's fun to follow.

They have so much moneyh, just wait until the off-season to get Lester.
That doesn't really help them win a world series this year though, does it?
Nothing gets by you does it?
Hey, I've only been drinking since 11AM today. Cut me soem slack
:lmao:

Dodgers can probably get some lower priced options, but Lester shouldn't cost Seager anyway. Not with 11 or so starts plus playoffs on his current deal.

Francis is actually much better suited as a LOOGY than a long-man. His numbers against lefties are pretty good. Overall.
:not taking the bait:
Career .254/.304/.388 against lefties. K/BB just a tad under 4. Johnson was proceeded by two more lefties.

It's almost a shock he started the season in the minors.

I've been wondering lately why MLB wouldn't just do a live auction for their draft. Fantasy sports style.

NFL and NBA drafts are huge events, while MLB has finally upgraded to bringing a few cameras into the local Western Sizzlin' to film their draft.

Live auction just makes too much sense. It'd be exciting as hell, and MLB really wouldn't have to change much to do it.

They already work on a bonus allotment that could just be converted to auction spending limit, and unlike the NBA (and the NFL in some years), it would rarely be a wise move to just spend it all on the top player.

This year's draft had 1215 selections

Plus, just because these teams have a bonus allotment doesn't mean a player is necessarily going to agree to terms with the team that bids on them. These guys are still free to negotiate a contract.

And did well there. Wacky to think that a natural LOOGY miscast as a back-end starter/long reliever and pitching in Coors might not put up great results.

I'd link to his vs. lefty stats again, but that would be redundant.

It's a shame I didn't appreciate Glavine until I was older and he was out his prime.
Mrs Glavine might still be in her prime

My uncle and Glavine were neighbors for a long time in Roswell, Ga. My cousin said Mrs Glavine was a must see at pool parties.

LaRussa speech was awesome. They need to make bigger podiums just for Frank Thomas, looks like he's leaning on a foot stool.

Great speech by the Big Hurt, although I could have done without hearing the name of every ####ty White Sux player during his days there.

I love baseball, but it's almost unwatchable these days. The rules are unbearable.

I just saw a play at the plate involving the Phillies and Diamondbacks ... Ryan Howard was out by 30 feet. There was no collision. He basically stopped running. And was ruled safe because of some dumb idiotic rule that was changed in the offseason.

Seriously. What a joke.

Players still don't have to sign for the winning bid. Same as a draft pick refusing to sign. Though, I bet fewer refuse when their bonus was just determined on an open market.. Regarding the 1200 players, it would go back to the same draft format after the 10th round or so.

If the length is a deterrent to viewership then there's nothing lost compared to the status quo.

So i never recall another player from any other sport going to another teams game while they were out rehabbing an injury. This is in regards to Troy TulowiTzki catching the Yankees-Jays game today at. Yankee Stadium.

Carlos Santana had a nice little week, eh?

15-for-27 with 6 home runs, 10 RBI, 8 runs scored, 5 walks and throw in a stolen base for good measure. Thank you for clinching my playoff berth. Along with a shout out to Big Papi too. :excited:
