This is gonna sound really dumb but did kershaw always have that strange windup?

These ESPN guys are brutal...

No command, terrible insight, Kruk isn't funny and the other guy sounds like he's doing an informercial.

Bring back Morgan and Miller, my goodness.

Agreed. Miller is the giants broadcaster though, and Morgan was really bad towards the end. Kruk is awful too though, I always thought he was somewhat of a character but he hasn't really been that way in a few years.

I remember when Kruk got hired like a dozen years ago I thought he would be really good. Excellent even.

That was.......wrong.

I think guys like him have a limited window. They're good the first 3-4 years when they're still really connected to the game and the players playing. But then, they get further away from the game and don't know the players as well and become all schtick.

Is Harper bad enough vs lefties that he needs to take a seat in Colorado?
No. I think most Nats fans are confused by what Williams is doing with Harper, between this and where he's been in the lineup.
There's conflict there, between him and Harper and between Harper and some of the vets. Winning cures all but there are obvious issues with this team, and Harper's numbers confirm what some are thinking. He's a 21-year-old kid from a different generation, not sure the vets know how to deal with him being the fan favorite or how outspoken he can be. Williams is not helping this IMO, Davey kept things steady but Williams doesn't have the experience.

A day late here, but the Padres and Expos were among the four teams who entered MLB in 1969.

First no-no in franchise history:

Expos: Bill Stoneman, April 17, 1969 (team's ninth game ever)

Padres: still waiting

(Oddly enough, the Pilots/Brewers still have just one in their history ... Juan Nieves in 1987).

I'm usually a critic of Williams but I defended the benching of Harper yesterday. Here was my reasoning, which kind of jibes with what Williams said:

- The Rockies are starting three LHPs in this three-game series.

- Benching any of the team's three lefties (Harper, LaRoche, Span) allows the Nats to get Danny Espinosa's plus defense on the field and to move Zimmerman off 3B where he has throwing issues without taking a hit offensively. Espinosa is a terrible hitter overall but he hits lefties fine- career OPS of .794 vs lefties, career wRC+ of 118. He's actually better vs lefties than all three Nats left-handed hitters, by a decent margin.

- If you want to bench most of all of the lefties against the Rockies' lefty rotation this week and get Espinosa's excellent glove and decent bat vs lefties in the lineup, yesterday was the obvious day to bench Harper. With ground ball guy Fister pitching you want the best IF defense, which is LaRoche at first and Zimm in the outfield.

I suspect that's exactly what will happen- LaRoche will sit tomorrow/Wednesday with guys on the mound who produce fewer balls in play, and Span might too. Harper will play both games and Espinosa will play at least one. Just so happened that the game where it made the most sense for Harper to sit was the first one of the series, so it got undue attention.

There might be some clubhouse issues with him but I don't think this particular benching was a symptom of it.

Should also point out that Espinosa went 2 for 4 with a double, a triple and a walk yesterday. 2 RBIs and a run scored. If you're in a deep fantasy league and want a 1-2 day middle infield fill in this week you could do a lot worse, if the Nats actually do what I think they're gonna do. He's an abomination from the left side, though. He should sue whoever taught him to switch hit.

Maybe he should give it up like Victorino did...

You're definitely not the first person to suggest that. He's incredibly stubborn, though. And I'm not sure of the details with Victorino, but I know Espinosa's been switch-hitting for most of his life, so he'd be looking at RHPs from the right side for the first time since childhood if he gave it up.

Yankees kinda-sorta going for it is weird shtick. Guess they can't really pack it in during Jeter Year.
They really havent given up anything of value unless you think Nuno & Solarte are keys to the future
I think Nuno vs. McCarthy in 2014 is close to a wash. That they gave up five more years of Nuno, who I think could be a useful pitcher although probably not an ace, is pretty bad.

Headley for Solarte and De Paula is also pretty close to a wash, Headley will at least help with that leaky defense, but I can't see him having a big impact. Maybe they get his bat fixed and he's worth an extra win or two, but that's probably the max.

The most troubling thing is that they're not necessarily going to shut down Tanaka, and try to bring him back this year. That just seems like an awful idea. I guess they technically have a very outside shot at making the playoffs and running the gauntlet if everything breaks right, but their run differential is 13th best in the AL.

The Yankees have been making trades like these since the days of GM George Weiss in the 1950s. They have more ability to absorb salaries and take on financial risk. The prospects are B- guys even by the Yankees' standards.

I think the Tanaka stuff is all brave talk until he's ready to resume baseball-related activities. If he undergoes TJ, he's pretty much a writeoff for 2015 anyway regardless of whether the surgery happens in July or September. The Yankees can afford good doctors and they can afford to wait.

Yeah but the Yankees are about to get John Danks, sky is the mother####ing limit.

Seemed like a good idea to put a guy who doesnt speak English in the booth for an inning. That was awkward on the YES network with them interviewing El duque

Cliff Stoudt with a nice QB sneak. Fred Dryer of the Rams blocked the XP, but Matt Bahr made up for it with two long field-goals.

Jeff Francoeur released by the Indians. It looks like it's the end of the line for Frenchy. He is a great guy and teammate by all accounts and was capable of looking like a ballplayer in (mostly) brief spurts. He was somehow able to parlay these into almost 5000 MLB PAs and over $25M.

He leaves the game with Mel Hall and Derek Bell as his top two B-R similarity scores. Hopefully Francoeur will be able to stay out of prison.
He's back like a bad penny. He'll fit right in for San Diego.
