I know that makes things "easier" for the US... but damn, I hate hearing about injuries pre and during the world cup. These guys spend their entire lives trying to get here- so sad to see them have to miss out once they are.

How important is the World Cup to the players compared to their club play? If a guy played in the EPL and he could have either an EPL championship or a WC championship in his lifetime, which would he take?

I think most would choose the WC.

Wasn't named the starting keeper until the eve of the Cup.

Mexico very happy. Brazil bummed. They know they ran into a hot keeper, but the team is not clicking just yet.

Great for Mexico, not good for Brazil but at the same time, they can still likely win their group with a win against Cameroon. It's not a death-blow by any means.

The GK Ochoa was expected to be the backup until literally like 2 days before the cup started. He has been in the Mexico system for a long time but had always been passed over for other more veteran GKs. He was locked in a battle with Jesus Corona for the starting job and appeared to be the backup through the friendlies.

Mexico is probably very happy.

Brazil is probably a bit disappointed but not so bad. They've got a very winnable game against the group minnow, Cameroon, coming up next, likely needing just a draw to be through. They'll surely want to win, though.

He's OK, nothing great. But damn if he didn't stand on his head today.

Brazil = meh, but they'll be a HUGE favorite over Cameroon and only need a tie to advance.

Mexico = happy. Mexico will also need a tougher draw against Croatia in the last game.

He's been their #1 off and on for a long time now. So I'd say, very respected. Does a lot of commercials, etc. I thought he had fallen out of favor with the previous coach and hadn't seen much time.

Plus- he's always been a stand-up guy on the field. I've seen him personally go to the crowd at Azteca to try to get them to calm down during heated qualifying games. Also always their to help up the other guy and never seems to complain or whine to the ref.

And he's apparently got 6 fingers.

Mexico has to be cautiously ecstatic about that result. But they could also look at is a missed opportunity- they played Brazil evenly and took soo many shots that sailed over the cross-bar.

Brazil and their fans will say the sky is falling the second their team doesn't just win, but win with :style: IMO, they are fine and will regroup for the knock-out rounds.
