Well... Chile/Holland and Spain/Australia are getting more boring by the minute.
Chile/Holland is important because loser plays Brazil in the knockouts

ETA: ...or Mexico. The group A games will be complete by the time Chile-Netherlands take the field. If Brazil finishes second in their group, Chile-Netherlands could be a travesty

Hey, another noob footie question:

What kind of a choke are we talking about here for Spain to not advance? I know they were considered one of the top teams, what I am wondering is how rare is it for a team of this caliber to get knocked out of the WC? Like a top 2 seed going down in the first game of March Madness? Or more common?

They won't know that when they play. Brazil and Mexico each play after chile/holland and it's far from a lock Brazil will land 1st in group.
Hmm, I didn't know that. I assumed they'd keep the same schedule rotation.

Chile/Holland should still be good. Two teams that like to all-out attack and the group winner (probably) avoids Brazil.

Obviously forgot about that part of it.

Still.. avoiding Brazil doesn't seem as important as avoiding red cards/injury and what not. But then I still don't understand why the whole world is so afraid of Brazil, never have, Pele doesn't play anymore

Their group is hard, so it would be like a #1 seed losing to a #8 seed in the round of 32.

I find your avatar disturbing, but I can't look away.

Netherlands and Chile are tough sides. It's not like France losing to Senegal in 2002.

Spain has been a historically successful side. Hopefully, they'll be remembered for their successes and not their performance here.

Happened to France in 2002 and Italy in 2010. Not too uncommon.

How effin' crazy do you have to be to go to a foreign country, storm into a stadium with 100s of armed security, with no obvious way out, and then go through the media center? Verdict of guilty by tomorrow and in jail by Friday?

The writing has been on the wall about Spain with them getting slammed in the Confed Cup last year in Brazil (by Brazil) and with Barca losing their spot as preeminent team on the globe.

Both teams relied on a core of amazing players who used short passes and constant short movement to just destroy teams (what people call the tika taka). But teams have figured out to use high pressure and speed to open them up- and that's what we've been seeing here so far. Plus, the Spanish core players are all getting a little old... and likely have lost a step, allowing other teams to do this.

Because that's 1 and done, it really isn't the a good comparison. It would be more like the if the Spurs only win 30 games next year.

Continue to be impressed with the seeming homefield advantage for South American/Western Hemisphere teams - Ecaudor is the only one to lose, other than Honduras which really had no chance vs. France, and Uruguay which lost to Central America's Costa Rica.

I will really be a believer if Costa Rica beats Italy.

I do recall seeing a Spain tune-up, and it's like a different team. Very little of that short passing, which even I could notice.

Cheeee-Layyyyyy

BTW where is Scooby? Under a pile of hunky Euro footy fans, I imagine.
Had to miss the first half. Wife was reluctant to reschedule the embryo transfer. Now at a local bar with a Pisco Sour.
An embryo transfer would be a good name for a drink
Hey Scoob- I either didn't know, or likely didnt remember you posting in the other thread (fertility, not pron or soccer). Best of luck with it! We went through it twice, so feel free to get unsolicited advice (use your right hand, not your left).

FIFA jails are no joke. I am not making this up. There were cases in South Africa. Those guys might be beginning long sentences before the week is out.

Agree that the writing has been on the wall for this possibity since Bayern destroyed Barca 7-0 last year. This team was built around Xavi and Iniesta and now that they're fading, especially with Alonso and Casillas dropping off as well, they just aren't able to adapt.
