OFFICIAL 2017 Training Camp & Preseason: News & Tidbits Thread (1 Viewer)

Best play at camp: Filling in for injured starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill, backup Matt Moore had a good day of practice on Friday. Moore's best play was a nice deep ball to running back Damien Williams for 30-plus yards in team drills. Moore throws the best deep ball on the team.

RB Marlon Mack Impressing, May Earn Regular Season Work

"Mack could be too dynamic to not have on the field though. Of all the later-round picks the Colts had in 2017, Mack might be the most impressive so far." - Writer Kevin Bowen

"He’s got great athleticism; he’s showing great vision out there. We’re doing one-on-one pass protection drills against the linebackers and he’s physical. He’s got toughness. He’s not afraid to stick his face in there and pick up blitzers and then he’s a weapon out of the backfield on third down ... If he can master all three phases of being a good running back, he’s going to be a special player I think.” - HC Chuck Pagano

Currently at Jets practice and Enunwa was down for awhile during 7x7 drills. Couldn't tell what happened. Walked off and into locker room a bit gingerly.

Hoping it's nothing, but stay tuned.

Mike McCarthy Is All-In On Ty Montgomery, Calls Him "Stud"

"He’s the full threat. [Montgomery] can obviously run it, he can catch it, he can displace and run routes and catch it,” McCarthy said. “He just needs the reps in pass protection, because he’s actually really high in ability for pass protection. That guy’s a stud now. He’s got it in his body. He’s a very good young player.”

May be a bit of coach speak but I think people are downplaying Montgomery's ability and possibly making more out of nothing re: the rookies being a threat to his job. McCarthy saying Ty's ability in Pass Pro is "really high" is a huge  for me.

Placed on injured reserve - was worse than anyone at the practice thought. :(

Sixth-round pick Elijah McGuire is "getting plenty of reps" with Matt Forte and Bilal Powell shelved at Jets camp.

It appears McGuire has handled run with the starters as Forte (hamstring) and Powell (neck) nurse day-to-day injuries. Per ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini, McGuire has been "steady, but he has yet to flash explosiveness." Just a 24th-percentile SPARQ athlete, McGuire is mainly intriguing for his plus versatility and situation behind two aging backs. He's a deep-league name to monitor.

Coach Hue Jackson said Monday that Randall Telfer is currently the Browns' No. 1 tight end.

Of Telfer, Jackson said he "likes his blocking," which was Telfer's strength as a sixth-round prospect coming out of USC in 2015. It's only a matter of time before first-rounder David Njoku emerges as a real threat, but for now the Browns are making Njoku pay his dues. In addition to Telfer, athletic second-year TE Seth DeValve is listed ahead of Njoku on the depth chart.

Ted Ginn is listed as the starter opposite Michael Thomas on the Saints' first unofficial depth chart.

He's listed directly ahead of Willie Snead, who is on the second team along with Brandon Coleman. Ginn was praised by Drew Brees after spring practices and has picked up right where he left off at camp. Meanwhile, Snead has been dinged up and missing practice time, though he was back out there Monday. Ultimately, all three of Thomas, Ginn, and Snead are expected to play heavy snaps in the Saints' big-play offense that loves to throw the ball around. Snead remains a strong WR3, and Ginn is worth a flier in the late rounds as a home run-hitter over the top.

10 Observations of Eagles Camp: Torrey Smith Catching Everything In Sight, Wendell Smallwood May Breakout

"So far through camp, however, Smith has not only had no issue catching the ball, he has displayed some of the best hands on the team. Smith has done the best job of all the receivers making catches that, based of the team's receivers last season, would have been dropped in 2016.

Although part of his heavy workload has been because of both Blount and Pumphrey missing time, Smallwood has been getting more carries than veteran Darren Sproles and considerably more work than rookie Corey Clement ... but so far, Smallwood seems to be the best candidate on the offensive side of the ball (besides Wentz) to have a surprising breakout season.

Familiarity is key for a quarterback, and with all of the new pieces around him, it is clear Wentz feels the most comfortable throwing the ball to tight end Zach Ertz. Ertz has been all over the place so far in training camp, and has been targeted more than any other player on the roster by Wentz. Even when Jeffery has been on the field, Ertz has been targeted in the passing game far more often."

It's interesting how some stories say Smallwood may break out, and others say he's falling behind in the pecking order. I guess that is the joys of training camp, when every beat writer has an opinion.

Yeah, that's why, especially for RBs, I tend to take note of coaches discussing pass protection in particular as everybody knows that coaches always emphasize pass pro/will start guys who can protect their QBs.

When it comes to beat writers, I try to read between the lines and read multiple POVs. It's worth noting that he mentioned Smallwood was getting reps ahead of Sproles but Blount was out and Pumphrey's skill set hews much closer to Sproles and he was also out.

This is a random complaint, but can anyone else with a Mac not scroll on these ESPN articles once the page finishes loading? I chalked it up as a fluke the first time, but it has happened to me for every one of them since the first, in both Chrome and Safari. You can scroll down on the content while the page is still loading, but as soon as everything is rendered, it gets stuck and won't move for anything.
