*** Official 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season Thread *** Oscar (1 Viewer)

Watching the scenes of devastation in N.C. and S.C. really makes me feel terrible for those folks.  It also makes me feel like a butt head for all my woe is me feelings I had last year when Irma came through.  Having a tree fall in the yard and being without power for a few days is nothing compared to what these people are going through.  My heart goes out to them.

Our efforts have been put on hold until next week.  Simply no way to do anything with the water there and it's going to be there a while.  Then the ground has to dry a bit.

I just don't understand the Trump family.  Saw a tweet from Dumbo Jr. who crushes A. Cooper for phonying up reporting and making storm look worse, screaming fake news, etc.

His picture was from Hurricane Ike back 9-10 years ago??  The engineer in the picture on the crew died in 2017??  What is the purpose here?  Are you so detached that the only thing that crosses your mind is the evil media?  Look, I am no saint, but can you imagine him rolling up his sleeves and actually heading to NC to do some volunteering?  Is it so hard to simply say any loss of life is terrible and I plan to pitch in?  The President and family are supposed to set an example for this country.  I simply just don't understand and never will.  Sad.

Nearly everyone I know on Facebook has shared or commented on that old picture as well.  All people are sheep, regardless of their position or political leaning.  Sadly.

I agree with this.  This country has a gang up mentality and we love to kick people when they are down.

Positive side, roofing company came out and backed up their work.  Seems 2 of the 4 seals on the flashing redone after Matthew dried and failed.  Since the seams overlap, I had no issues until a wind blown sideways rain came and was able to seep in.  Company will also cover my interior repairs, which are likely spackle, killz and paint.  Wish they did the repair right the first time, but coming out this quick gives me peace of mind.

that's great news- I didn't want to be the nabob, but I fully expected your roofing company to be buried with a ton of work, likely making your smallish project a bottom priority. I'm impressed they responded so quickly.

Well my place didn't fare well.  Ceilings on three levels wet.  New wood floor will have to come out.  Several walls damaged.  Drying equipment coming in tomorrow.

Damn Bass, sorry to hear that. We just had wood floors installed in our place so I know what a pain in the ### that is. Hope the repairs go smooth.

Installed them myself so it's a kick in the nads.  I'll have to stay on top of the repairs because most subs around here do inferior work.

I wasn’t needed for Florence so I’m heading back to the 813 shortly.  All in all, a pretty underwhelming adventure.  At least I had beers with friends last night.

really expected a hem and haw, but we didn’t get nailed that hard here.

Tough break.  Indeed be careful of who you get to do the work.  After Hugo there were so many "contractors" that came from out of nowhere, did shoddy work, and disappeared.

It sounds antiquated to reference Hugo stories 29 years after the storm, but that's how much of a mark it made on the psyche.

Sucks watching the floors cup and curl.  Drying equipment should be in this afternoon, but I suspect that will be too late.  Found out yesterday that the water got down to the ground floor studio apartment so that 3 floors worth of ceilings that will need work.

99L looks legit to turn into Kirk.  99L is hauling ### right now.  May not have time to hit the carib hard, but could get gulf side and bomb out.

I believe @pantherclubsaid he was in Morehead City instead of Atlantic Beach.  I doubt it really made much difference on intensity of the storm being as they are so close.  I am sure most of Morehead City is still underwater and with no electricity and very little cell service.  I hope he checks in soon but we are probably the least of his worries now.  I just hope he and his family came through this healthy and with as little damage as possible.

damn man that was nice i appreciate it.  i have been meaning to come update but just too slammed to have time.  we got power yesterday but no internet.  morehead didnt flood as bad as new bern but we got hit hard.   trees down everywhere and roofs just thrown around.  the entire town is mobilized working and its a cool experience.  my house didn't have too much damage and i had generator the entire time.  no two ways about it but i got lucky. from what i understand the thing just stopped and didn't move for 2 days.   it was the most intense thing i have ever been through

i think its going to be interesting to ne when i catch up on this thread.  there were many moments during the storm i questioned my intelligence but after it was nice to get a jump on work and not be cut off.

I figured you were awol with electric/network issues rahter than something terrible, but really glad you got through relatively ok... thanks for checking in. keep us updated

Just bumping this because for some areas downstream, the flooding has just started.

My cousins live in Myrtle Beach. They came down to Jax FL to stay with us during the storm. They went back Sunday. They are very fortunate in that their house is fine. But areas around them are flooding out. Ways in and out of MB are getting fewer by the day.

The Waccamaw river isn't supposed to crest until Monday and it will break the record set during Matthew.  Look at google maps and see roads/traffic missing in an entire section of the country.

Yes Florence did not have major winds when she made landfall but the flooding continues to be an issue long after she's gone.

We don't need a storm to question your intelligence...   :P   Glad to hear you are OK.  Good luck with the cleanup effort.

That's why there needs to be some revision of how these storms are categorized. I'm not smart enough to know how, but some combo of predicted wind speed, surge, and rainfall along with terrain-based effects (delayed flooding, mudslides, etc...). I bet those folks in the affected areas would murder someone right now who said "it was only a Cat 1"

In asia they use a 1 to 10 scale that encompass all factors more or less. Not sure why this can't be copied.

I thought I was going to have entice @Nathan R. Jessep to post in his hug thread to get you in here.  :P

Good to see you’re back.

Before or after?  Isn’t it hard to predict the total impact of the rain/storm surge before it hits?

It's apparently hard to predict wind speed, too. Florence was supposed to land as a Cat 3 or 4 less than 24 hours before she struck as a 1.

I'm just saying the the wind speed category classification is woefully misleading, whether it happens to be correct or not. Ask Houston last year, or the Carolinas this year.

Intensity modeling is a black magic type thing. They can do great when it's out in the middle of the ocean, where there are a ton of models.  But once you start getting land interactions the models just go to #### on intensity.

Flo was forecast to go over some superheating water 24hrs before landfall, while moving slowly  In most situations this equates to a much stronger storm, but it didn't happen wind wise.  What did happen was the storm got a lot bigger and alot more people got touched with huge water.

What did farmers on the side of that interstate do with their hogs?
Whelp, I just saw some pics on social media that showed what they did with them.  Nothing.  They're all dead, floating in water.  That is gonna be one helluva cleanup.  They've got to be rotting and bloated, about to pop like zits, no?

Many NC pig farms still use gestation crates on pigs which is cruel. They also abuse them in other manners. Drowning is brutal, but their lives when they are alive is brutal too.
