Update on Milton
Cat-4 with 150 MPH sustained winds
My Lord

-The eye is very well defined, this thing might reach speeds we don't see often, like maybe 175+ mph before it peaks
It’s going to be really bad. Tell your son the get his *** down here MOP. Prep your home and leave. There is nothing he can do.

Staying is not a smart option. Implore your life experience wisdom and get him to leave now.

When the waters recede he can go back and assess any damage. Why subject yourself to this when you have a choice to be out of harms way?!!!

Just talked to my sister. She’s in Bonita Springs visiting friends. She said everyone there is just hunkering down. I thought it sounds like a bad idea but she doesn’t have her own transportation to leave so she’s stuck.

I’m extremely concerned but she doesn’t seem to be, so maybe I’m worrying about nothing.

Weekend trip to Asheville to help my uncle and grandmother. Shocked to see that FEMA was NOT preventing help from coming in. Asheville airport looks like a military base. There were a few reports of people prevented from going into harms way in the areas where the ground is really unstable. Tons of private citizens pitching and coming alongside each other in support. Most are focused on clearing roads of debris and building temporary roads/bridges.

Now looks like maybe a trip to central florida to help my dad depending on where milton goes.

can you post any lies that the internet loves? maybe FEMA is charging for site access? the governor being carried around in a rickshaw? water is $50 a bottle? i still have access to my local nextdoor site, i’m at the beach and reading some of the lies are crazy.

asheville is a great part of the state and to see what has happened is devastating, i am happy that there are still good people chipping in. how do they recover from this realistically?

This whole “hurricane hitting Florida” thing is getting old.
That is one reason I decided to retire to HHI, SC instead of Florida. And guess what ? The first year there Matthew hit HHI hard. You never know. When I was in Virginia, Isabel hit us hard and we lost power for two weeks. I love the Asheville area, but who would have thought a hurricane would effect them like it has.

Cat 5 usually requires flight level winds of 155 measured due to the issues in getting accurate readings at that point. This might be the storm that goes Cat 5 without it as Milton looks to be heading to 175.

Musk claimed starlink technicians were not allowed into affected areas to set up communication links.

Realistically the people don't recover from this. Insurance companies won't cover much and the rebuild will take years. Far too long for people to tough it out without having a community to fall back on.

Should crack the top 10 list of all time storms this morning. Only question is how high up the list Milton gets. Currently ahead by 14mb of what was considered the worst case model as of yesterday. That may mean it takes a shot at #1 all time.

Yea, I didn’t want to fan any flames when people were talking about the govt. in every instance that my sister experienced any and all outside help was welcomed. Even when they were basically under Marshall law after Marylyn. But hey, if you read it on the inner tubes it MUST be true!

Watched this video this morning. It's from a few days ago, dude walked into Chimney Rock. You might have seen snippets of this as I recognized a few clips from this already. Yea I don't know how these folks rebuild without a massive aid package. To your point, insurance isn't covering this.

not trying to rile anyone up but Musk is shall we say not exactly the most trustworthy source

It's only getting worse. Seems to me the elected officials who are managing the crisis at the state and local level have been vocal about getting as much support as they could possible expect.

For sure. He’s a take everything he says with grain of salt. What does that even mean?

This is the same guy that couldn't use his underwater sub thingy because the rescue divers were all pedophiles, right?

Tanpa airport is shutting down Tuesday at 9am.

My wife was supposed to fly to Vegas Tue night until Friday, that ain't happening.

We're just east of I-75 in Brandon and are hunkering down for this one, we're far enough from the coast that flooding/surge shouldn't be an issue for us. Wind damage/power outage is probably the worst be will deal with. Heading to the vet for some doggie Xanax for the pup now.

Stay safe and good luck to my fellow Floridians!

I can't help but think about all the massive piles of furniture, appliances etc that are sitting on curbs and streets from Helene - the surge from Milton is gonna turn all that into floating debris that can cause even more damage.

This ain't gonna be pretty. 😞

Floating? Try Flying.

That was extremely sad. I know exactly that stretch of road - spent many a days there the couple times I visited my brother who lives very close to there.

Just can't believe it.

Really emphasizes why they don't let just anyone into these areas even if they have the best intentions. Downed power lines everywhere. Unstable roads, boulders, hillsides, and potential widow maker tree limbs hanging all over.

****URGENT: NOAA NHC RECON HUNTERS FIND MILTON IS ON THE CUSP OF SUB-900MB****
This is an extremely historic and unprecedented intensification process we are witnessing. An hour ago, Recon Hunters had 925mb. Within the last few minutes, they have recorded 914mb. Both the FL and Surface winds are approaching 180kts or 207mph. While this is suspected SFMR and has been flagged for contamination, we will need a dropsonde measurement to confirm the FL and Surface winds relationship. Nonetheless, we are witnessing history and are likely an hour away from Milton becoming the 6th Sub-900mb hurricane ever in the Atlantic Basin.

Note: this guy gets hyper "excited" about things like this but he's often not incorrect.

Honestly I think it's incident specific at this point. Some spots are super cool and welcoming, some spots are ********. Nobody had a plan for this or if they did, I'm guessing they never did a dry run. Everyone reacts differently in these situations, I think 95% are trying to help, the other 5% are like these idiots. The local sheriffs have a tremendous amount of power doing these events and some get a little over their ski's with it. It will get sorted out, these mountain folk don't take **** and won't stand idly by as their neighbors suffer.

A lot of times it’s not about whether someone is trying to help. Every time anyone goes in, it creates a potential emergency and drain on resources if they ultimately need to be rescued themselves.

I think most everyone wants to help, but in such a large scale emergency, there needs to be a bit of coordination and structure- and not just everyone doing what they want.

I wanted to thank you for posting the clip, I appreciate the time the person who filmed this, walked this, uploaded the video to show people first hand what happened
That home and the woman showing you how it was devoured by Helene or the mudslides all the rain created, it's astonishing

The models are really going to hit the edge case of what they can realistically figure out vis a vis how a Cat 5 sub 900 monster deals with shear and steering.

If anyone is thinking the models are showing it breaking up right before it hit land, they are playing with absolute fire here. This is going to bury huge areas of the coast.

Burg looking at MPI at or near 195. Talking Nascar/Formula2 speeds.

Two hurricanes have exceeded MPI so it isn't a hard cap. 200 is possible but not clear if aircraft can go in it.

I heard more of my friend’s daughter’s experience in Black Mountain, NC. There have been gas leaks because of broken gas lines and propane leaks because of busted propane tanks.

Anyone trying to make the calls on just allowing willing folks in to try to do anything they can to help people versus not allowing people to enter into areas where they themselves may need to be saved costing rescuers more time and resources is in a tough spot.

Haven't seen anyone saying that. I have however seen the conspiracy nuts saying this was "man made" and that makes me both laugh and angry... and sad.
We have utter lunatics ranting all over social media…..about this very thing. I only know because my sister is on X (I deleted my account a year ago).

My god…..just go away.

Have a few friends in Tampa area. They have stayed home and hunkered down for every other storm that has come though.
They are leaving for this one. It looks bad.
My niece is in Venice Beach, she snagged a hotel someplace. Lives in a trailer park, hope it's there when she gets back.

unfortunately manufactured homes, mobile homes etc are the most vulnerable (as I am sure you know).

Nor sure what youre asking, but we hear every single year the $750 tripe. We hear th he govt is nowhere to be found or that the govt is taking all the hotel rooms (both of those with respect to Asheville) We hear the govt wont let people help. This one we keep hearing that the govt cant help because they are all at the southern border.

I feel bad for those on that area as this is likelythe first time they are hearing these lies and those sorts of messages assuredly add to their stress. Just sucks all around.

I agree with you, its a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. I don't have a good argument one way or the other on it.

My gut feeling is if the government (State or federal) isn't organized enough or doesn't have the resources for rescue efforts, they should allow civilian teams to attempt recovery efforts under the condition that no help is coming for them if they get stuck.
