Official Dallas Cowboys 2012 Thread (1 Viewer)

Agreed that it was tough loss. Agreed that this team fights to the end, which is a nice change. The folding like a lawn chair in December, in the past, was hard to stomach.

All I know is, with Romo at the helm, this team has a chance in any game. The defense aint scarin anyone, and prolly needs a few bounces to go their way for it to not be all on Romos' shoulders.

It's hard to not think about having Lee, Carter, Rat, and Church. Especially Lee, dang it! Teams wouldnt be gashin us up the middle with him in there. Morris is gonna have a big game next week.

I'd REALLY like to see a lot more ball control next week. Feed Murray the rock. Get Witten in the middle of the field. Give our D a rest. They are gonna need it for us to have a chance.

One game to decide the East! Lets go Cowboys!

The only thing i really want to say at the moment is that I am really proud to be a fan of this team right now. This team is playing with off the street free agents right accross the board on defense. No quit with this team.VERY proud despite a tough loss.
They'll lose by 20 points next week like they do every year when it counts.

This year Dallas doesn't seem as talented as in past years, but they seem to play harder and to find ways to win instead of finding ways to lose. That's a big change for them and they earned some respect from me this year.Next weekend in Washington will be an old rivalry getting back to what it used to be --- 2 good battle-tested teams in a sudden death match. One wins the division, the other goes home. I hope the Skins win of course but good luck to you Cowboy fans. I know the Skins are facing a capable opponent. This is going to rock.
It's what being a football fan is all about. It's not perfect on either side, but it doesn't get better then this to watch.I'm going to enjoy it win or lose.

I don't know how long it's been, honestly. The Redskins have been bad (with flashes of mediocre) for so long that I've lost track of when they were legitimately good and really had a chance at anything meaningful. Years like those test how much someone really wants to remain a fan. I've hated our owner, I've been embarrassed by our former GM and some of our coaches, I've ticked off numerous Redskin fans by saying "we're bad" when the Skins have been bad. It's been an endurance contest remaining a fan. This year there are young players and new players all over the field for the Skins. They're closing out games, they're shutting off other teams' comeback attempts, they're beating teams they (seem to) have no business beating. And all the years of waiting are suddenly worth it. It's fun watching them again, knowing they might actually win any game they're playing. It's an awesome year already. And with the high number of young players on the field it looks like there are more good years ahead, for the first time in.....forever it seems. So there should be plenty more good Skins-Cowboys games coming up.

I hear ya. The Cowboys are always overrated. Or then you take the '07 season.........Its been tough to bare for several years. The result hasnt met the expectation. And huge meltdowns at the end of the season. LAME! I really like what Shanahan has done. And RG3 is the real deal. The skins should be able to move the ball at will against the Cowboys D. Morris should have a 5+ yard average. If Lee, Rat, and Carter were playin it would be a different game. As it is now, I see the skins winning by a touchdown or two unless the Cowboys D gets a couple breaks or bounces. You never know.

Game day!

Normally all tense and wound up on game day. Not as much today. I'm not predicting a win, but I feel pretty good about our chance to pull it out and make plays. Win or lose...I'm ok with whatever happens because neither of these teams is going far in the playoffs. The win would be nice though.

Let's go Boys!!!

The team didn't quit. A solid draft (read: O-line), better playcalling (hey, I can hope), and a healthier defense and the team can be really good next season.

I'm proud of the heart this team showed in December.

I'm really done with Romo. Been a fan all my life, watched every snap for 17 years. I defended him for years saying he brings us to contention and a chance at the playoffs. I can't do it anymore. This isn't just a knee jerk. Dallas has to turn the page on this guy. Let him go to the browns and make CLE respectable only to blow it before the playoffs.

He's too erratic. Start over . It's hard to love this team.

Tough loss in a winnable game.

Hoping that Garrett brings in someone to call the offense. He sucks at it.

Interested to see what Jerry Jones has to say.

I seriously HATE that this happened to Romo. That Romo happened to Romo. It was all on his shoulders and he had the chance to be the hero. Again, he comes up short. SO painful to watch that. I have been a Romo supporter since day 1, I always defend him. I always argue for him. Just painful to see the game end like that. Brutal game. Just brutal. Just once I wish that guy could be the hero one time.

For the love of God fix this offensive line and get some kind of magic potion for Sean Lee. I love that guy but damn, can we just have him healthy for a full season???

Longtime Cowboys fan and completely agree. He's nothing more than a "good QB" who will never take them far.

The defense put him in bad spots most of the season, and again late in this game. The offensive line is miserable, put any QB back there with that O-line and they wouldn't do any better than Romo. On top of that, towards the end of this game he was missing Dez, Miles, and even Cole Beasley. This banged up team just went 8-8. Before the season started, with a completely healthy team, not many would have predicted much better than that. After all of the injuries and the start to the season, nobody would have predicted that. I'm happy with the way the team played the last few games, including this last loss. They fought and overcome many injuries and adverse situations. With a few additions to the O-line and a few spots on defense this offseason, along with our key injured players back (Lee, Ratliff, Carter, Scandrick, and even Ware who has been badly hurt), this team should improve from 8-8 next season.

I am really disappointed with Romo...again...but seriously...how many QB's out there do you think would be able to do what he does with this offensive line and bums like Felix Jones and Phillip Tanner back there?

Perhaps everyone here forgot about....

Ryan Leaf

Clint Stoerner

Quincy Carter

Chad Hutchinson

Drew Henson

Tony Banks

Anthony Wright

The game cannot be put in Romo's hands. He has to have help. When the game is on him and him alone. He buckles.

The defense sucks though. It seems to me like adjustments were never made to mask the fact that they were missing the entire heart of the defense up the middle.

I know the typical Cowboys fan in me wants to fire Garrett and clean house but I have really been pulled over to the side that we have "been there and done that."

Garrett seems to have the buy in that hasnt been there in a while. Seems like this ship could be righted with another year in the system for everyone on offense and defense. Guys back healthy. Some help on the o line.

If Dez can play like he played next year...trying to find some optimism here....

Really nice to see Garrett with some passion in his voice at the podium right now.

The Romo choke jobs are very real, but hasn't helped that he's always on a team with no room for error. This team would be 4-12 at best without him behind this OL, without Murray for most of the season, and with what we have to work with at the skill positions. As was said before ... this was at best a 10-6 team if all went well and to finish 8-8 with the injuries suffered isn't bad. The fact that so many were winnable makes it hurt of course.

I think it is time to bring in a real OC and let Garrett focus on being a HC if he is to be retained. I am fine with Ryan he just needs his key starters healthy. Picking 18th should net quality depending how free agency goes.

Did the OL shore itself up a bit as the season wore on? Is TE becoming a need? Witten is great but he is NOT a difference maker. Either a joker TE or another quality WR should be considered. Hard to say what we need on defense given most of our starters didn't finish the season. I'd be fine with another developmental QB just not really early unless it becomes BPA.

Again with a mostly healthy squad this team runs away with the division and Romo wins atleast one playoff game. Maybe injuries won't be so severe next season?

Im happy with how hard Dallas played over the stretch. It's not about the rest of the team and their "heart". It's about Romo and his execution in crusial plays. Something just blanks on him and he goes haywire. I understand they would have never made it out if the first Round but they COULD have beat WASH. It was there. Spencer stopped RG3 on the play of the game and it was in romo's hands. Why throw it off the back foot to your sideline , on your side of the field, at that spot in the game? He's too erratic and goes numb at the most vital times of the season. Always has and always will.Note: That pick had NOTHING to do with the poor line , his HC, Dez being out. It was a absent minded play from Romo.

Its hard to watch your team loss a winnable game for the division.

I'm not making excuses, we didnt get it done. The injuries were the worst I have seen in any Cowboys year.

I thought the defense gave the offense a chance early to take control of the game. We didnt do that, I thought the play calling was bad. I saw no signs of adjustments at the half. Garrett, needs help or the door.

Romo...I feel for him. He really had a poor game though.

Lots of changes need to happen which we will all post about in the weeks to come.

I liked that we fought hard all year....and thats the best thing I can say right now.

It's very tough being a Cowboys fan the last 15 years or so.

Good game you guys. Your team was in it right until the end, despite numerous injuries and a tremendous performance by an opponent's running back.

I'm done with hope for this team for this year. Pathetic year. They have a chance to go 6-10 don't forget. Or win out and then lose in the playoffs 56-3. Or go 2-2 and miss the playoffs. They're going to rip our hearts out like in that scene from Indian Jones - Temple of Doom. Happens every year.
As predicted.

Good game to you guys. I don't like Snyder and get tired of Skeletor, but I love Griffin and not liking Alfred Morris is impossible. *Great* team effort after the bye - - amazing, really.

Dont worry, we all hate Snyder too. But at least he isnt our GM anymore!! :excited:

You pretty much covered every possible outcome and this was at the time when the team was ravaged by injuries hence a playoff win wasnt even spoken by even the most optimisitic fan.

Romo is what he is, when he has protection he will dismantle a defense when he gets constantly pressured he is going to make mistakes. Its why teams always have brought blitz against Dallas. So frustrating watching the game knowing that on every 3rd down both inside linebackers were blitzing and the protection was not there (meaning guys were unblocked).

I am so excited about this team. Gettting guys back from injury will be definetly help. The problem going forward is certain key guys always seem to be injured Murray, Lee, Austin, and Carter to name a few. I hope we keep anthony spencer. Ready to part ways with Free.

Feels like we are in the same place we were last year. Another win and in game and we are watching the playoffs....looking ahead to free agency and the draft...in January...again....

Priorities....

1. Pass rush. Need some. We have none. Resign Spencer. Draft a first round road grading DT that can take some pressure off of the OLB and put it on opposing QB's.

2. Safety. The point of the safety is to provide safety to the CB and support the run. Sensabaugh does neither. He is a poor tackler and gets beat in coverage too much. I want to see a veteran safety back there to bridge the gap for our two young guys. I think they have talent and could be solid once they get some experience but we need a veteran presence back there.

3. OL. Doug Free was BRUTAL. BRUTAL. BRUTAL. I don't know if we can fix every hole in the draft. Top tackles arent usually available in free agency. Not sure what to do there.

4. RB. Murray cant seem to stay healthy. Felix Jones is a COP back at best. Was a GLARING need when Murray went out. May not seem as important but it is. RB can be found in the 4th and 5th rounds or grab a solid veteran backup that can come in and start in case of injury.

Offensive coordinator. Can we please get one? Norv Turner maybe? Horrible head coach but great coordinator. Could be a great dynamic between him and Garrett since they have some history.

This isn't a reactionary post or one made in anger. The day after, I am definately disapointed not to see our players hard work and effort rewarded with a playoff game. Let's face it, we weren't going anywhere anyway. It would have just been a nice consolation prize to get in.

With my preamble out of the way, I will repeat my desire to have Garrett removed. It's not personal Jason. You are a good man, you command a room, you get your players to play hard for 4 quarters. You have started to change the terrible entitlement culture that had set in at Valley Ranch. You handled the Brent/Brown tradgedy as well as any coach could have. Thanks for that.

However, you are 16-16 in 2 years. That's not Dallas Cowboys football. You are out-coached on a monthly basis. You struggle with basic play calling and controlling tempo, clock management, x's and o's as well as making half time adjustments. As I said earlier in the year, I do not think Garrett's system is Romo friendly. One of the 2 has to go. It's easier to find a quality coach then a quality QB....despite his flaws.

In my opinion we are 2 drafts away from being able to make a run. Here is what I think we need to focus on.

On defense:

Scrap this stupid 3-4.

We are still tied to Rat for 1 more year. He is an ideal DT in a 1 gap system. Ware Rat Spears 1rst pick on the Dline. Draft the best rushing DE you can. At LB you are totally set with Carter Lee Albright. Spencer walks unless you can sign and trade him. There are decent Safety FA's available this off season. We are set at corner. Jenkins also walks. We wil be compensated for losing Jenkins/Spears with comp picks.

On offense:

We need a Center and a guard. I can live with Parnell/Free if next to a solid OG. Can't fix 4 spots in one year. I'm done with Austin and Olgetree. Build around Dez/Harris and look for a competent WR3. Lastly, we need a burner at RB. Not sure how to acquire this at the moment, but it would complement Murray very nicely.

I say 50-50 we see a coaching change. Jerry was quite cryptic in his post game comments. I will be interested to see if anything goes down in the next couple of days. Peter King who has more access to Jerry then even the beat guys very quietly dropped Gruden's name a week or so ago. If a change happens, it's 1 of the following 3: Holmgren, Gruden or drum roll....Reid. West coast, x's and o's type of guy with a winning pedigree.

Sigh...another offseason to dream and hope.

A few random thoughts less than 12 hours after the season ended.

1) You have to give credit to this team for continuing to fight. They had so many chances to pack it in, but they did not. This trait made them far more fan friendly than many previous versions. You can root for a team that fights and sucks. its tough to root for a team that has ability and quits.

2) The offensive line absolutely must be upgraded next year. Every other position group can be worked around given what's on the roster. This team will never have success of consequence unless this group is upgraded.

3) Doug Free. Wow, did the team miss on evaluating you. I don't know how it is that you've regressed so much. You were very good for a couple of year. I know having Kyle Kosier made many tackle playing next to him much better. But you've been below average when not with him. And you cost more to cut than to keep next year. Not sure what to do here.

4) It was really good to see Dez grow up a lot this year. The change from the start of the season to late in the season is remarkable.

5) Dwayne Harris is a keeper. The guy shows major stones. He's earned a more expanded role. I doubt we learn what's going on with Miles Austin. Has he been dealing with nagging injuries all year? Probably. But he gave this team nothing but a large cap charge this year. Not much else last year either. I'd have to think they will look hard at the cap charge of letting him go.

6) I hope they find a way to re-sign Spencer. He did not play well this week (nor any other defender as far as I could tell), other than his very timely sack in the 4th quarter. No idea how he did it, but he repeatedly made big plays in clutch situations this year. More broadly, the defense was noticeably worse when he was out at various other times in the season.

7) Romo. Oh Tony, how could you make that last throw? That was just so brutal. You carried this offense all year. The team wins 3 or 4 games without you. You willed this team to win so many games, kept them in so many games. Showed the young guys how to fight, how to work, what it takes. That last pick was just so, so bad. You're what, 32 now? No realistic choice but to re-sign you for another 3 years. And its also time to spend a 3-6 round pick each and every year on a developmental project.

8) Jason Garrett. Time to give up some control. You hvae an experienced NFL offensive mind next to you in Bill Calahan, your notional offensive coordinator. Time to give him play-calling responsibilities. Then you can focus more on bigger issues and overall game strategy. You showed yourself to be a leader of men. Now its time to do a little self-evaluation.

This is important. For everyone lambasting Romo, they need to look at the bigger picture. No NFL QB is gonna be successful when constantly running for his life. The Cowboys O-line is below average, period. RG3 had almost no pressure on him, and we wouldnt have been able to stop john riggins if he'd have suited up. I knew they would run all over us. Our D is pretty bad right now.

Romo's been having to do too much all year. Last night was perfect example.

Good post Ridge. We posted our evals exactly at the same time and seem to be in agreement on a ton. I'm just more OK with a coaching it seems.

The problems with Garrett this season that I saw:

1. Poor play calling- the play calling goes from one extreme to the next. Boring, predictable, unimaginative playcalling early, rushed hurry up play calling late. Never any type of balance.

2. Poor in game adjustments- usually any in game changes are made too late.

3. Horrible game/clock management- the play calls take too long to get in. The clock management is in question every single week.

So....Garrett is horrible at offensive coordinator tasks and horrible at Head Coaching tasks. Exactly what are his strong points?

He DID NOT lead this team to anything. The fact of the matter is, the Cowboys got LUCKY. Really LUCKY to win the games against Cincy and Pitt. Against Cincy, AJ Green has his worst game ever, not because of anything the Cowboys did. He was WIDE ### OPEN on several plays and just mentally checked out. Had he made ONE of those plays, the game is over. Against Pitt, a beat up, broken Big Ben makes a mistake in overtime and saves the Cowboys again. Nothing Garrett did caused that.

I have waffled back and forth and back and forth over Garrett and Ryan but it is just really hard to justify bringing Garrett back with the one exception being....continuity. But is this the type of continuity we want? 8-8 again?

I don't think Garrett is going anywhere. This team plays for him. They've bought into his "work the process" speech. And honestly, what HC could have taken that team, decimated by injuries, to the brink of the playoffs in the NFC East? I agree with all of the above. He can't make adjustments. His playcalling is maddeningly predictable. No emotion, etc, etc, etc. But again, I don't think he's leaving.So...assuming he stays, is Callahan the only choice for OC since he's already on the roster? Is there any chance they could bring in someone else to call plays? I don't know if that's really much of an upgrade.

Romo has been great in the 4th this season, in general. He's one of very few guys would could have kept us in games with the offensive line that we had.

I'll happily take him back next year and think he wave a very good shot to make a run, with an upgrade to the O-line.

Anything would be an upgrade over Garrett calling plays. Would love to see Norv Turner back in Dallas to call the offense. Could be a great combo with Garrett.

Time to bring in Holmgren and Norv.

We are not getting rid of Romo. Likeable guy. So appreciate his talents and leadership. But, there is nobody I know of in sports who more consistently vomits all over himself in clutch situations. Maybe ARod. But Romo has a big issue with this. More often than not, primetime game, big spot with the lights shining brightly on him, he chokes and chokes bad. This is not the fault of his OL...it is on him. Which is a real bummer, because I totally dig the guy, otherwise, both on and off the field.

That is all.

Romo will blow it. Great fantasy QB. That's about it.
Hate to say I told you so. Jones needs to take off the blinders and move on. Glad to see some of you homers finally realizing this. Scouts rarely miss prospects at the QB position. He was a division 1aa QB and a free agent for a reason.

Solid points here. I disagree with 2). If anything they do well is adjust the offensive gameplan as the game goes on. That's about the only thing you can really say nice about the system. This was not an 8-8 team this year. It is and was a shock to me they won 8 games with this talent. The talent is just not there in key spots and there is no depth at all to cover injuries. Nothing about that is changing with the coach.
