My 10 year old son got this game a month ago and plays it constantly. I don't think he's played any of his other games since getting Destiny. I had to get him a gold subscription so he can play with his friend. I don't let him use the headset with anyone but his buddy from school who I know - assume that is standard parental approach for a young kid, right? I have watched a few times but not played. I'm not a gamer, but had logged a dozen or so hours playing Halo Master Chief before he got Destiny. My off the cuff comparison is the two games are very similar, with the main differences being Halo seems more difficult to progress through the levels, Destiny is obviously more focused on investing time in your character, leveling up, collecting items, etc. I like the idea that online play can be focused on working as a team, rather than just competitive matches against other teams. I would say my son probably frustrates other online players because he will jump into any group he can find, but he really sucks. He's playing with a level 20 hunter, and pretty much always has the worst stats of all the players on his team. Last night he was trying to get some achievement that required he not die once the entire raid. As a result, he's hiding almost the entire time and finished with about 100 less kills than his two partners had. They were constantly attacking, while he hid and sniped the whole level.
I'm afraid "frustrates" probably understates the negative opinion other players hold for you son when he plays that way. There are piles upon piles of reddit threads pillorying players who join a raid and hide in order to get that stupid bounty. Though it sounds like he's not going full AFK, so he's got that going for him! It's partly on Bungie for creating bounty systems like that.
People in the community make too big a deal about AFKer's and such on strikes, imo. It will always be there as long as you have matchmaking.

Anytime I suspect that someone might not contribute much or be AFK, I just head back and watch them. If they keep doing what they are doing for a while longer, I will quit and join another match. No big deal.

ETA: House of Wolves can't come soon enough. Other than PvP, there is nothing left to do in this game.

I was watching and didn't think it was all that bad, but I don't fully understand how the game works. He was playing with his rank 11 warlock, and the other two guys were both ranked 10, so I didn't think it was all that big of a deal. He was sniping and hiding, almost died several times, and I think ended up with about 40 kills whereas the top guy had 150. He was very happy to get the achievement as I think it will level his guy up one more.

In the end, I wouldn't sweat it. The more he plays, the better he'll get and he won't have to do this. I snipe all the time and almost never have a problem. The kill numbers are almost pointless.

I dunno...no raid...that's kind of disappointing. Hopefully the new game mode makes up for it but I am skeptical given the new mode is only for 3 man fireteams instead of 6.

Still have a shred of optimism but I am not holding my breath.
Hearing that a lot. But the new mode is a horde mode. As long as it has any form of randomness to it, it will already be much better than Crota's End.

This should brighten your day. Hard mode Atheon, last night, decided to drop the vog helm, the vog sparrow, the mythoclast and........yes, a Gjllahorn. :)

I ran HM VoG twice yesterday. Got Fatebringer x2 and a Vex. Of course I already have those. Ran the Nightfall twice and got energy and a Legendary pistol. Besides a couple Vex's I have no clue when the last time I had an exotic anything drop.

I think it was their way to pull me back in. I hadn't played in a week and ran the nightfall on all 3 characters last night and got it. Of course I kept playing to level it all the way.

Got to play a little bit of HOW last night. Much more fun than TDB and VOG. Played through the story mode and did the prison of elders, looking forward to playing more tonight. The new pvp maps look much better and will play some on those to practice for the trials of osiris on the weekend.

Quick Destiny question, again just relating to my noob 10 year old son. This is now the only game he plays - no more fifa, madden, halo - nothing else. Due to our family restrictions, he gets one hour on Wednesdays, 2 each on Friday, Sat and Sunday. It seems to me this type of grinder game is hard for him to advance with these restrictions. I swear he's been trying to save "strange coins" for about a month now and only has about 10.

He plays with his one buddy online all the time and I'm not sure he really understands the best strategy to level up and advance. His Hunter is now level 24 after about 4 months or so of playing.

Any good tips I can use to help him advance and level up quickly? I'd like to reward him for hard work and good grades at school - should I jump straight to HOW expansion even though he doesn't have any of the other expansions yet or best to get the earlier ones first? He is itching to get HOW, so that's my leaning, but I don't know how it works.

tia

I still do have some fun with it but I am just about done as well. I actually think the grind has improved and that the HoW content is at least a change of pace, but I think in satisfying the TDB whiners they've actually made it too easy to level up to 34 and greatly reduced the incentives to toil for new gear (I also have no vault space, which doesn't help). Also, Prison of Elders, while fun the first few times, gets old fast.

PoE is not nearly as fun as Gears of War II horde mode and, dare I say it, is probably even worse than Call of Duty Zombies. Both of those game felt more dynamic than this one. Gears had larger and more complex maps and different ways to fortify with shields and heavies (Torque Bow FTW!), while Zombies had more of an adventure game feel to it with the unlocks and weapon boxes. PoE so far (I've only played 28 and 32 lvls) is just a large circle where you fight waves of enemies in the exact same way you fight them in most strikes, with a handful of different modifiers. Its just another grind to get gear.

I haven't tried Trials of Osiris yet, looks more promising but its hard to get motivated to LFG for PvP and it only allows groups of 3 or less.

I don't understand why they designed all of the key new content for the DLC of a game with big social aspirations to have maximum 3 man parties - makes no sense.

With the Witcher 3 out and Elder Scrolls Online coming soon, I think this might be it for me and Destiny.

I left the game before the last DLC came out. If I want to play the Taken King is there anything I need to do wit the last DLC or can I skip it completely? Obviously I'm behind level wise but I assume I can make that up fairly quickly.

Kinda wondering the same thing. I haven't played this game since the Christmas holiday, after the second raid. I was so turned off by it since I could solo the raid that the game was severly flawed. I am a little hopeful that they might have turned it around...

You won't be behind at all. They're completely re-working the leveling system and green level guns are going to be better than previous raid weapons.

just picked this game up for the first time last week. been playing and enjoy it so far. got my character to lvl 19. I think it's capped at 20 so i still have to figure out how to level past there

Pretty sure that cap is up to 30 or 35 by now.

I'm hoping some of the you guys that dropped out come back and give the new expansion a second chance. This game is completely different. Most of the complaints from before have been addressed and changed. There is so much stuff to do.

Oh yeah, swords.

The update is great so far. I'm not quite into end game but so far it feels as though they've fixed a lot of the problems that destroyed the replay value before.

:goodposting: picked up TTK and it is a lot of fun so far. Glad I jumped back in

So whats the cliff notes version of not playing since the first dlc dropped? I love Destiny but ####### HATED the idiotic light level system that was pure luck and had nothing to do with skill or effort. Also hated how the strikes for better gear was removed if you didn't have certain dlcs. Have they changed any of this. Also my gear is probably useless now since I take them as a power escalation style for dlcs instead of balance...

The light level is different but it is still structured similarly. Your character level is now based 100% on xp. You play the game, you level up. I used 0 Xp boosts, and it took me about 6 hours of gameplay to reach the new cap at 40.

Light level is now based on your gear and weapons. Everything has an attack or defensive value from 0-300. Your light level is simply an average of these numbers. Activities now have recommended light levels. Strikes are 240, weekly heroic is 260, nightfall is 280 and im not exactly sure what the raid us at. I started with 3 maxed characters at launch, I have probably 20-25 hours of gameplay in and I'm only at light level 254. And only on 1 character. The grind is still there but you can get through it in so many different ways, it keeps it from being repetitive.

I've played a total of about 12 hours and am at 271. Bought a helm engram off Xur but other than that, all drops. I do have a bunch of people to play and do strikes with though so that's part of it.

Yeah. Having a team is much more important than before. I've been running mainly quests and bounties. I've managed to get up to 255 and now I'm running strikes and both daily's.

Daily quests are huge. I'll do the daily crucible and heroic today and buy my 280 chest from dead orbit (currently wearing like a 250) and that should raise me quite a bit. Hopefully close enough to do the nightfalls.

I have been considering this game, but no one on my friends list has it. Are teams important or can I just pub and do ok?
If you want to get the good gear teams are critical. There are matchmaking sites out there though. Sucks I need to drop another 40 to get everything updated.

I am in. Hook, line and sinker. Level 26 Titan and playing the crap out of this game.

It's a blast.

beat the base game on xbox 360, so now there isn't really anything to do. waiting to get the taken king and an xbox one this holiday season.

They pretty much ####ed the people who didn't buy the dlcs.

So if I buy all the DLCs my character won't be completely nerfed?
