What are the Bengals doing? Were they worried Burrow and Chase might be out of sync and needed the reps?
Used to be standard practice that starters played in the preseason. Game one = a quarter, Game two = a half. Game 3 = a half plus a series or two. Game four = a series. But now some teams hardly play their starters at all while others play them more. There's just no real consistency.

1. Kaleb
2. Kaleb
3. How’s Kaleb look?
4. Let’s go Kaleb
100%. Roman Wilson intrigues me as well.
I am also intrigued by Roman Wilson. I see him as potentially ascending to the Steelers WR2 spot and as long as Rodgers is on the field being viable as a fantasy WR3 type option. Would love some input from Pittsburgh fans who may have more localized info on his situation.

Im also interested in Austin, to see if he can hold off Wilson for that WR2 job.

Seems like many teams have become much more cautious about pre-season injuries and avoiding their stars playing much, if at all. Probably correlates with often sluggish play in week 1.

Quote I heard once: "The games don't count - but the injuries do"

29 out of 32 teams are running joint practices this year. Many, like Detroit, are having multiple weeks of joint practices. It’s a far more controlled environment - IOW, you know you’re going to get to red zone, two minute drill, et al - and most facilities have side by side fields. There’s no waiting around, you can have good on good taking place for both offense & defense simultaneously. And there is no tackling to the ground (most frequent place injuries happen.)

Pre$eason game$ are a nece$$ary evil to fulfill broadca$t obligation$. Most teams keep all their starters in bubble wrap during PS games & use the joint practices for the real evaluation.

I think teams are doing it right now- especially with those experienced players. I just find it hard to believe Burrow and Chase needed those live reps to get on the same page and be ready for week 1. Those guys are irreplaceable and losing either for any significant amout of time would be catastrophic for a team with playoff hopes.

Playoff hopes? Have you seen the Bengals’ defense?

It's 100% tied to their slow starts. They are 1-11 in their first two games the last 6 years. You have to go back to 2021 to find their first week 1 or 2 win. The offense has looked very sloppy every single year. Some of that's probably due to Burrow always dealing with an injury, forcing them to use the first month of the season to 'get on the same page'.

Burrow & Co. are all healthy so I'm hoping they decide to play it like week 1- a quarter/ couple drives then they're out, but I suspect they'll play the first half. Philly is likely to sit most of their defensive starters so not sure what their going to prove against a second string vanilla defense.

Oooooooh... I love stories from the long, long ago.

Say whatever you want about the toughness of the week 1 opponents, and coming back from injuries and such, but compare Burrow's cumulative week 1 stats from every season to the remainder of his career, and it's realllly ugly. I don't know if preseason actually helps, or if it's been due to other factors, including randomness. But I'm happy to see them out there in preseason this year.

Hasn’t he spent most offseason recovering from injuries? I know he was last year and wasn’t throwing too much in camp. There was even talk in August that he wasn’t able to grip a football yet.

You're right about that, I don't know how many seasons that has been the case, but yeah, when still recovering from an injury, those are obvious exceptions. But I don't think the reason for not playing in preseason means that the correlation of the stats can't bear out potential causation. But it does mean it wasn't even an option in those years.

As someone who lost my survivor pick on them in week 1 last season, yes, they needed those reps. Was inexcusable to lose that game to NE, and that loss arguably cost them a playoff spot (and NE the #1 pick) because it was the worst team they lost to, and the loss was 100% on the offense.

Burrow wasn’t even able to grip a football last training camp or preseason so he wasn’t getting reps at all. He's hurt a lot.

I won't have time to write this story before kickoff, so here are my notes for it. Here's what I'm looking for from several Chiefs players against the Seahawks tonight. . .

1. Brashard Smith: I'm surprisingly worried about the rookie after Dave Toub's comments last week. You don't make the 53-man roster in his situation if you don't have a role on special teams. He needs to show out there.

2. Esa Pole & Chu Godrick: I'm leaning toward the Chiefs keeping nine OL this year. Versatility is going to be the name of the game. I want to see more of Pole at RT and Godrick at RG.

3. Carson Steele: I want to see him get a lot of carries. His issue last season was holding onto the football, so let's give him the bulk of the carries and see if he's fixed it.

4. Jared Wiley: Is he entirely comfortable/back from the knee injury?

5. Mike Edwards: I could see the Chiefs eating his guaranteed money and getting him on the practice squad with Deon Bush hurt. He needs to stand out above other players in the DB room.

6. Nohl Williams & Jeffrey Bassa: Can these two rookies stack back-to-back good games?

7. Skyy Moore: He needs a monster game, not only for his chances in K.C., but just to get another opportunity in the league.

8. Fabien Lovett: Actually showed some juice as a pass-rusher in preseason Week 1. Can he do it again?

9. Melvin Smith: The Chiefs need someone to emerge at cornerback. Could it be him? 4 coverage snaps in preseason Week 1 with no targets. 9 run defense snaps with 3 tackles.

10. Nate Matlack & Michael Wiley: Can the new guys get involved and do something?

Nice gain by Pacheco on a outlet swing pass but, what I really didn't like was that he didn't get out of bounds on the sidelines. Instead he chose to seek contact. I love his heart but, with his running style, if the Chiefs want to keep him upright for 17+ they need to put him on a strict play count.

Seattle offense observations:

1) Is KWIII hurt? It looked like all Charbonet, with all the starters on O, on that first drive.

2) Milroe came in on a short yardage conversion attempt (successful), however Drew Lock is running the offense on the second drive. Milroe is likely a gadget guy and not the guy to take over if Darnold goes down.

Seahawks OL opening some holes. Guy behind Charbonnet is at 3-42.
Were the Chiefs playing starters on D on that first drive? It looked like all the skill position players, except Mahomes, were out in the first offensive drive.
Seemed like it, other than Chris Jones and Trent McDuffie.

Seems like Walker is on a plan. Was never gonna play tonight. Doubt he plays all preseason.

Based on the play by play, looks like they were mixing it up. Definitely some starters out there but multiple 2nd string guys registered tackles on the first drive too.

Yeah, that sounds right. Regardless that was not the Chiefs defense we will see in two-ish weeks. And the Seahawks running game will look nowhere that good when the season starts.

Hey now! I know I’m old. You don’t have to point it out!

Henderson with not much on his first few runs than two nice runs in a row...draw on 3rd and long where his speed gets a 1st down than a very nice run for a TD of 8 yards.

Geez Sam Howell...that was a bad decision for a high school player let alone a third-year pro...embarrassing interception.

Stuard? I don’t even need to have known. How’s he looking?

Yeah, he’s 15. He flies. You’re only paying him 1.5 million or so. It’s ridiculous

I know this is just preseason but my god how awful have these referees been in the Dolphin-Lions game. Talk about weak calls all over the field here.

IMO, Ollie Gordon is the handcuff for Achane, even though Wright started. Wright had 1 good game versus NE when Achane was out in 2024. He has speed, but not vision per the local beat writers.

Ewers looks better to me than Wilson. He throws with timing. Accurate too, don't look at the stats - already 2 drops. Nice TD throw to Theo Wease on a skinny post. Wilson had decent stats today, but his accuracy is an issue and he takes too long to make decisions.

Miami's DLine and LBs are a strength. K Grant and 5th rounder Jordan Phillips have been great. But the CB room is the worst in the league, losing another CB possibly for weeks. Storm Duck is our best outside CB.

2nd stringer Ethan Bonner with a hamstring. Severity unknown.

Name a team in the past 20 years with both a carry by a Harvard RB and throw by a Harvard QB, preseason or regular season. In any game.
