***Official Road to the 2017 Breeders Cup*** - GUN RUNNER Romps, Rob Ryan Doppleganger Rejoices! (1 Viewer)

What means "10 panels"?
I'm pretty sure it means "furlong"

I might be a little rusty on my slang.

I'll be heading to Empire City to get some exotics in...

Some form of $ 5 triboxes ($30 each) and a few 50 cent superfecta boxes ($12 each)

2,3,4,7,8

Good luck to all who venture in.

????????????

TAPWRIT  as my key in the tri - with LAL, Gormley, JBE, Meantime.  backing off Epicharis with the ouchies.

2/3, 4, 6, 9/3, 4, 6, 9

3, 4, 6, 9/2/3, 4, 6, 9

3, 4, 6, 9/3, 4, 6, 9/2

$2 wager brings that ticket in at $72

GL to all - been a thin slice of equine heaven the past five months

GL w your action. Balcony Belmont fits Tapwrit's middlemove to a T.

As i said when you got us all to the Derby safe & sound & excited (& all flailing in puddlewater), thanks for seeing us down the track. You're a first-call jock.

sentiments much appreciated, Wik   :hifive:

and now coming full circle on Tapwrit ... loved his punch in the Davis waaay back in February (first TC hopeful that caught my eye, you were right there with), then the big-time TBD score.

was so very disappointed that he didn't lift a ######' hoof (borderline catatonic) when the gate sprung in the BG, but he redeemed with a very respectable 6th in KD.   Pletcher will have him primed.

speaking of which, the Johnny V/Pletcher combo wagers by me at Belmont helped pay for my daughter's upstairs bathroom renovation, so it kinda pains me to toss Patch, but (dwindling) allocated funds dictate a more economic approach this afternoon.

let's get 'em all home safe and sound, with some reward waiting at the gate ... and drinks all around at the Jamaica Ave. LIRR   :banned:

Epicharis scratched, as feared. Damn.

Current odds :

Twisted Tom 7-1

Tapwrit 5-1

Gormley 9-1

J Boys Echo 10-1

Hollywood Handsome 18-1

Lookin At Lee 5-1

Irish War Cry 4-1

Senior Investment 6-1

Meantime 14-1

Multiplier 14-1

Epicharis SCR

Patch 11-1

Twisted Tom drawing a lot more action than I anticipated, likely due to the jockey/trainer combo. Any value that Senior Investment and Patch had has been bet out. It's really flattened out. Might have to give Irish War Cry another look in the absence of any real long shots.

wow, they moved the Met Mile from Memorial Day?! My favorite non-TC, BC race of the year backinday
see that MOHAYMEN slots at 20/1 ml ... firebrand last TC season, ripped off five in a row to start his career, then crapped out bigly in the FD.  bagged bottom of KD s'fecta, but has more or less been relegated to Palookaville

plus he sounds like a Jerry Lewis word. i can hear the race call, "it's Sharp Azteca, Awesome Slew comin up fast,  Sharp Azteca, Awesome Slew, Slew, Azteca, azteca, Slew. Who's that on the outside?!?! MoHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYmen!!!! Laaaaydeeee, what a finish!

:lmao:

that's one nutty caaaawwwlll!!1!

Gave my wife $4 to bet to keep her interested enough to watch the race and without looking at the odds, she chose a $2 exacta box with Hollywood Handsome and Meantime.

I figure if by some miracle it comes in, I'll collect a few hundred bucks. If not, at least I know she won't bother me to do something else while the race is on.

Spoiler alert:

She's online shopping with her winnings already.

But at least she won't bother you to do something else while the race is on!

$624. Only had $30 spread, so not a bad day.

Cashing out +$360 for the TC season. I'll take it after costing myself a nice cash in the Derby by pulling a horse out late.

Not a classic quality win - when you top the field cuz you're the only horse who changed leads, that's not really championship material - but i feel a lil vindicated that my Derby horse took the final leg.

Nice EG. I pulled a typical boneheaded move by hitting a $20 exacta box 2-4-7-12 but then on a hunch took those 4 1sr/2nd in $5 tri's to Gormley in 3rd. Gormley went by Patch turning for home then Patch came back to beat him out of 3rd. Should have just stuck with the 4 in my box.  Still made $500 for the day

Excellent card. Happy for whomever had the 4 in the last at SA to sweep the pick 6 for over $800K

congrats to those who got a piece    wound up with a decent win bet on TAP, returned enough to offset the days wagers, and bring some respectability back to my TC bankroll - still down a fair amount, but a bit of salvaging thanks to that colt who first charmed me back in February.

five months and fifteen pages in - followed 'em soup to nuts ... and now we wait, as they rest up for the second half of the three yr. old season.  think we have a decent enough crop here - very competitive bunch, no real standout or super horse, but enough depth to make the upcoming stakes very interesting from a wagering standpoint.

Jim Dandy. Haskell, PCC, Travers, BCC - the five big ones we can now look forward to.

here's how i rank them as of right now, as per chops exhibited during the prep season, and through the TC series:

1) Always Dreaming - the back to back romps in the FD/KD are enough for me to overlook the Preakness debacle. may break the record down the Jersey shore if they opt for the Haskell. the horse most capable of delivering that eye-popping score/fig.

2) Classic Empire - perhaps the 'favorite' of this crop, won a ton of respect with his gritty win in the AD, then charging home after a tough trip in KD ... followed by being nipped down the stretch in Baltimore.  the two yr. old champ rebounded quite nicely from his injuries, and ran with heart each time out.  i expect him to bounce back with authority going forward, think he finishes this campaign as an easy H.o.t.Y. candidate, and as the top three year old when it's all said and done.

3) Tapwrit - won the war of attrition at Big Sandy, after turning in a mostly successful prep season.  was forgotten after his BG clunker, but there's a motor in this horse - a very honest and consistent cat.  a legit threat in anything they toss him in going forward - he always seems to run his race.  best bet to key wagers around.  unflappable, methinks ... but, still ... WTF happened in Lexington?

4) Cloud Computing - star crossed NY circuit darling ... put up impressive speed figs, and had a ton of buzz about him up here.  i figured him as a ne'er do well heading into the Preakness - but, man, some folks i really respect were all over him for that second leg, most notably Andy Serling from NYRA ,who all but guaranteed that Preakness score. the real wildcard here, if he's on the improve - LOOK OUT.  loved the dig in at Pimlico, edging the better horse, imo.

5) Lookin' At Lee - from the zig zag buzz coming home in the AD, to the rail skimming second in KD - cat is fun to watch/root for, and deserves to be slotted in right up with these. ran outta gas, but trying four Gr.1 races in eight weeks can do that to a colt.  would love to see him finally bag a WIN pelt, and his style is gonna be tempting in these upcoming tests (picking up fried horses in the stretch).

and let's not forget the likes of IWC (who is probably as deserving of that fifth slot as LaL), Gunny, McCracken, Battle of Midway, Gormley, etcetc - who turns it around for the summer/fall slate? any of those?  they've shown enough to be considered as 'dangerous' options to upend some tickets going forward.

we'll be here 'til the finish line at the BCC ... will fire up the Derby 2018 thread early this year, once the graded two yr. old season kicks in

One last word of thanks to otb_lifer for pimping Tapwrit basically since the get go. One of the reasons I boxed him yesterday and turned a losing TC season into a winner. I hope you run this thread every year, GB. Thanks for all the links and great info in here, truly outstanding stuff.

:hifive:

thanks, EG - glad to see you stuck to your guns with IWC and cashed a nice one yesterday

been a very exciting run, this crop definitely entertained us, that's for sure.

DERBY 2018 thread come September

Had 20 to win on Tapwrit. Also won about 300 on the dogs yesterday. So, +425 and an enjoyable day at the track with the old man.

guess we can officially call the start of the second half of the three year old campaign with the return of  McCracken, in this evening's Gr.III Matt Winn at Churchill (on the Stephen Foster undercard, featuring the return of Gun Runner)

bigger offings next weekend, where we'll see some very familiar faces in the Ohio Derby (also Gr.III).

gonna be virtually impossible for any of these also-rans to bag Three Yr. Old Champion status, lest they run the table from here on out ... still think it comes down to the individual TC leg winners and Classic Empire

case is made for 'Crack in above linked article, but it's a very tall order - he's in a great spot tonight, though, five horse field he should crush.

meanwhile ... getting a jump on Derby 2018 - American Pharoah's full brother, St. Patrick's Dayhit the track for the first time yesterday

Baffert trained, and we know how he loves to go through Oaklawn (won seven of the last ten Rebel Stakes) ... aaaand guess which day the REBEL falls on in 2018?

ETA: just ran across the futures from Wynn for the BC Classic

Arrogate the deserving overwhelming favorite, of course ... as far as the three yr. olds, interesting to see CC and CE both in the 20/1 range, Tap at 35/1 ... and then AD way the #### out there at 85/1 currently (opened 60/1)

Gun Runner in the Foster ... 1/2 was a license to print money.   legit threat to Arrogate come BCC?

McCracken also scored easily in the Winn (looked a bit green turning for home in the 4 path). nice one for him to shake the rust.

what if they gave a $500,000 Gr.III, and nobody cared?

you'd have the Ohio Derby - at the grand ol' storied grounds of Thistledown

ok, all that aside - WHAT A HELL OF A FINISH!   IRAP and GIRVIN in a virtual dead heat ...

nod went to IRAP,  but, dunno - i see GIRVIN with the win - maybe it's the booze

San Diego Handicap  - prohibitive 1/9 favorite in a 5 horse field ... Accelerate steals it on the front, wiring the short field.

Smith on the whip at the 3/4, the great Arrogate had no answer - missing the board.  puts an end to his 7 race win streak, and, interestingly enough, was behind Accelerate in both of his losses.

.... of course we know clunkers are thrown up in this game, but - the 2017 BC Classic is shaping up to be more than just a 'coronation' atm.

gotta love those show prices.

Midsummer reboot for the three year olds

kicking off today up at the Spa with the Gr.II JIM DANDY

five horse field, but verrrry top heavy with the winners of the first two legs of the TC on board in Always Dreaming and Cloud Computing.  haven't seen either since the Preakness -  hell of a stalk/rate by CC, finally nipping Classic Empire.

so, what gives here with AD?  cue in the rack, back of the pack in Pimlico - his bounce?  will we see a return to FLORIDA and KENTUCKY Derby dominance?  will this be a glorified Match Race?  really can't see those two not having their way ... CC may be a horse on a very steep upswing, but is AD going in the opposite direction?

howzabout Dougie and Mario crashing the exacta with Pavel if things collapse  :coffee:

Formulator PPs here

meanwhile ... tomorrow's Haskell is freakin' loaded -  featuring Irish War Cry, Battle of Midway, Practical Joke, Hence, Girvin, McCracken

only entrant who wasn't on the TC trail is Timeline, and he's generating an awful lotta buzz here ... some referring to him as possibly this year's Arrogate (horse who picked up steam after sitting out the TC season).

here he is in last month's Pegasus over this Monmouth track, never really being asked (99 BSF).  undefeated in all four career starts, all at differing distances (7f, 1mi., 1 1/8th, 1 1/16th).

last out for the rest -

Battle Of Midway taking the AFFIRMED.

Practical Joke takes the DWYER.

Hence closing late under Smiff to take the IOWA DERBY (crap feed, but, replay nonetheless)

Girvin barely nosing out Irap to take the OHIO DERBY (also under Smitty)

McCracken wins in his return in the MATT WINN

IWC was last seen behind Tapwrit in the Belmont

Formulator PPs here

hell of a field, wouldn't be surprised at any of them taking it down ... i think it's Timeline on top.

with ARROGATE taking a defeat last week, it opens things up for one of these to make a statement going forward ... not saying he is done, but things are a bit more interesting in the wake of that SAN DIEGO 'cap.

Awfully chalky, but I will key the two races with Always Dreaming & Timeline.
this Pavel is really intriguing today ... Dougie shipping cross country after one career sprint start?  AD and CC have been working better, and are two legit heavyweights in this class, but, i'm definitely taking a stab on the stretching out shipper as a saver.

Wow. Graveyard of Champions indeed. Thought about boxing the 3 dogs in a tri, decided against it. Thank God, that would have been agonizing losing that solid payout on a photo.

JIM DANDY

the two longest shots on the board finish one/two ...

Good Samaritan (first start on dirt) closes from deep to take it down, with Giuseppe The Great holding on for second.

Always Dreaming got out to the early lead, with tepid fractions ... Cloud Computing hung with, but faded to fifth (last) when it was all said and done.

AD was a full head over Pavel - looked closer in real time, but the favorite was comfortable third.

but, yeah ... yuuuuuge upset up there - Mott got himself a player here for the second half.

as i was checking the pools, AD crushed it in the WIN, while CC was way ahead in SHOW.

interestingly enough, Good Samaritan was second (show dough pool).  guess folks thought that if AD was off that he was gonna be toast.

btw, they called it
