Yeah totally agree. As we got halfway through the movie I thought every one of these people needs to die in order to make the line "many bothans died to get this information" reall hold weight.

Makes total sense especially if you watch all movies in a continuity fashion that those plans truly are the only way to bring the Death Star down, especially with them nuking their own base.

Just brilliant. It now makes the opening sequence that much more impactful in a new hope as you now have the backstory of what has gone into getting those plans. Just a great job, this felt more like episode 3.5 than an ancillary random story.

Mon Mothma says the line about the many Bothans dying to get the information. Mon Mothma doesn't make an appearance until Jedi. Why do so many people get this confused?

What does it say about us that an entire theater cheered for an evil man brutally killing a bunch of good guys who were essentially defenseless against him?

Note that Tarken was not a CGI human.  He was played by Guy Henry (Extras fans will probably recognize him).  Only his face was digitized.  Leia was the same way with actress Ingvild Deila.

I hadn't read anything about it - I was telling my boys that it was some kind of CGI or something but either way I thought they were both well done.

Without going in to detail how would they have done that to make you happy?  Add an hour to the movie?  Leave out a lot of the action?  I think we got plenty of Jyn and honestly she is the only one who was important from this movie.  

 
It is an absolute joy to take my kids to see this. My kids are crazier about this stuff than me. (And that says a lot) My 6 yr old is running around dressed up as Kylo Ren as we speak. We tried to get Grampa to go with us, but my tickets were "too late". He went and saw it sooner than me.

That says a lot about the Star Wars universe.

 
I liked the subtlety of when the imp pilot freaked out when sol took a drag of his oxygen tank showing the fear imperials had of darth Vader.

 
Saw it.  Loved it.  I thought Felicity Jones was awesome so not sure why some people are bagging on the acting.

I think my only complaint was that there were some cool scenes in the trailer/making of videos that didn't make the final cut of the movie.  And also the score was meh.  But overall this is definitely a top 3 SW movie for me.

Its a better film with a better cast than TFA.  They overshadowed 7.

It's the way memory works. The line is associated with the Death Star and the Death Star is more prominent and easily associated with ANH. I've seen all the movies dozens of times and the same thing happened to me.

The marketing dept that makes the trailers is almost always a different group than the folks making the film. They grab whatever scenes they want (within reason) to put together what they feel is a great trailer. 

And besides that, omits happen all the time, all the way up to the last week of post-production delivery, so those shots may have been in the movie almost up to the last minute, til they weren't.

That's true that a lot of times the trailer folks take things out of context and combine scenes/dialog to make things appear very different than they do in the movie.  However I think what FattyVM was talking about was that they literally changed some of the scenes between the trailer and final cut of the movie.  For instance when Jyn is walking out on the catwalk to re-align the satellite in the trailer there is a Tie Fighter hovering at the end of it that she is walking towards.  In the movie she still walked out there just the same but they didn't put in the Tie Fighter.

 
One of the amazing things about the new movies is seeing these stories told with ever improving special effects. 

I have an HTC Vive VR system and they have a Star Wars demo called Trials on Tatooine. It's not a full game but more like a mini-scene that you can interact with. The Millennium Falcon flies overhead and lands in front of you, R2 comes out and rolls around. TIE fighters fly over head and get shot down. The graphics aren't quite current movie quality but probaly close to par with prequels, and of course all life sized in VR. It's breathtaking.

All that is a way of saying there is going to be even more awesome coming.

This is just "how many 6 year olds would it take to bring you down?"  raised to the ultimate level.

In this case, the answer was "more than you've got".

Incidentally, this is how I hope most UK basketball seasons go, so I get it.

 
I might add that we paid 18.50 per ticket. Again leather recliners, maybe 8 rows with 10 seats across. The servers come to you with beverages and whatever you want. We sat Center 1 row from the back. 

NO CHILDREN in the theater. There were a few 15 and 16 year old kids but no children. I don't mind paying more once in a while for a great experience but if the higher prices mean no little kids I might go more often.

Cineopolis they call these theaters. They are popping up in a lot of places.

Yea but at least those people don't affect my experience. Vader on the screen "Wooooooo." Ok fine. Mon Mothma on screen "wooooooo" umm ok I guess. Bail organa on screen "wooooooo" Seriously?! Wtf! Big action sequence and important scene then R2 and 3p0 for 2 seconds. "Wooooooo" Oh Come on ####!!  Leia at the end. "Wooooooo." Sigh.

I have 3 kids under the age of 11. We got stuck next to 5 20-something stoners. (Shocking). One of them, in the middle of the movie, jumps over the row behind us in to sit in the seat next to my son. I looked at all of them, and said, "I will #### everyone of you up if you get within an inch of this child. Do not pull that #### again." They were deathly afraid. My GF was like, "Whoa". The amount of respect the young people have these days, is terrible.

And this is not a tough guy story. I just wanted to have a good time with my woman and kids. Only to have to scold some punks, sitting next to my kids. Literally, would have laid waste to them.

 
And 30 years ago you were the punk kid telling all your friends about the old geezer who threatened to beat you up because you were a little loud.

Yeah. I get it. I'm saying that this same exact thing happens all the time in trailers, at least in my experience working on these kinds of big effects movies. Current shots, omitted shots, shots with huge effects that haven't even been started yet so you scramble to just get something acceptable for the trailer...all those are in play for the trailers created for these movies. It's par for the course.

Yup.  When he lit the saber I got a chill down my entire spine and my eyes welled up.  When the scene was over I was actually doing a Macaulay Culkin holding my dropped jaw and speechless.  The SO said it was the most exciting thing she'd seen in a theater.

I always wondered why some Stormtrooper grunts went through the Blockade Runner door first.  I guess Darth had calmed down a tad by then or one of the Imperial officers mildly suggested that his guys could take the door if his lordship didn't mind. 

Finally, mad props to FJ and their casting of her.  An ubercute, sexy tiny British white girl with hips and an ### who acted the hell out of her scenes.  She was fantastic and ultimately heartbreaking.

I'm not saying you're wrong but I'm a trailer junkie and I rarely watch a movie without having seen the trailers a dozen times each and I can't recall ever really noticing it before like I did with this one.  Not sure why it was so much more noticeable for this movie.

It's Star Wars.

 
Guessing X-Wings pack a lot more power in their lasers than the snowspeeders in Empire, and they were using the X-Wings in that movie to escort the troop transports into space (with the big ion cannon helping them out).

But you couldn't spare an X-Wing or two to blow up the AT-AT's? 

Slight plot hole I guess

In Empire they talk about having to adapt the snow speeders to the cold of Hoth.  It could be that the X-Wings couldn't operate for long on the surface of Hoth - just long enough to take off and get into space.

But then of course they fly in space, where it's much colder. 

No the real reason is that they were spread thin as it was and need the X-Wings to defend the transports. So they had to make due with the scout T-47s which were only equipped with basic blasters. 

X-Wings were designed to fight Frigates and space fighters. They can rip right through an AT-AT.

No the real reason is that they are making a movie and tried to make a cool, unique looking battle scene ;)

 
just got back.

yeah- #### the people who have to look at their phones constantly. I guess that's what we've come to as a society- #### everybody else, I've got to check in on FB and see what my idiot friends are eating right now.

but I enjoyed the movie a lot- kept it rolling well in spite of the length, looked great, some great new characters, kept it as a stand-alone well (in spite of my kid's tears), and nice to see all the characters from SW. no complaints, really.

A common misconception about space is that you'd instantly freeze in space. However, because the only way for you to lose heat in space is to radiate it, which is a slow process, it's easier to stay warm in space than in a cold atmosphere.

Unless you're a vehicle that has fluids and what not that you need to keep liquid in order to operate. In that case, it'd be easier for you to do that in the vacuum of space rather than on the surface of an ice planet where the air will absorb the heat out of you faster than you would radiate it into space. And therefore it would be easier to keep you warm enough to operate in space than on, say, Hoth.

Just saw it.  Didn't like the Peter Cushing CGI.  Thought it wasn't the best I've seen....and I think when they do that....it comes across as kind of morbid. 

ETA: Other than that....thought it was awesome.  Love to see if they have an Extended Edition in the works.

Meh. I like Rogue One much better right now because it was darned near perfect as a companion piece for the first trilogy. It, moreso than TFA, was a call back to the OT of my youth.....yet it felt mature enough that I really liked it as an adult.

Right now, TFA gets an incomplete grade.  If it launches the franchise even higher....it will get its props.  

 
HOLY ####### ####.

I LOVED THIS MOVIE. 

Just got back from seeing it at the IMAX. It was just Epic. Pure Epic Star Wars. It was the Star Wars movie I have been waiting for since Return Of The Jedi. I thought The Force Awakens was really fun.

But this movie was serious Star Wars on a new level of maturity. I loved the entire Rouge One squad. The characters were great. Some incredible new classic scenes. And the last act was just incredible.

If you are an old school original trilogy fan you seriously owe it to yourself to see this movie a few times on the big screen. No doubt I am going back to see it one more time on the majestic IMAX screen and will no doubt purchase the blue ray for my collection (and extended version would also be welcomed). The pacing was fantastic, the story was tight, the acting was easily the very best ever in a Star Wars movie (not hard to do but seriously....excellent acting seriously).

Not enough superlatives to pass around. Star Wars is alive and well again. It just makes Lucas's Prequels look that much worse and misguided. Save for Revenge Of The Sith the other two are not even needed to be seen ever again for any reason other than the Darth Maul scene.

Best order to watch them in IMO is
