Maybe old news but I haven't seen it in this thread. Starting next Saturday, ESPN2 will be airing two EPL games per week, one Saturday morning and one Monday afternoon. First up potentially Jozy's first game - Hull City v Chelsea. The link has a partial schedule of what will be showed. Curious if we will get HD.

I am interested in the EPL fantasy league - I created a team, and I think I joined the FFA Premier League - do I need to do anything else?

You need a permit to work in UK since it's not part of the EU.
It actually IS part of the EU. It's just not a full member like France, Germany, etc. They have chosen to retain their currency and some other particular restrictions like labor laws, etc. Each member state can adopt all or part of the "single market" packages. The UK has adopted some of the standardization that the EU presents, but not all.
Ahhh..thanks for the clarification. I didn't think they voted on EU issues and of course still use the pound that's where I was confused. Kinda weird you can piecemeal it though.
Not to get too sidetracked, but all the EU is is a set of treaties that define (a bunch of) rules and regulations. Some members are part of every treaty, while some are only part of a few treaties (like the UK and Norway). The EU grew out of economic cooperation in the late 70s / early 80s, and the core countries that made up that trade bloc (France, Germany, Benelux) are highly integrated into the EU thing. The conventions go a long way towards regularizing and unifying the various institutions in Europe. They are still working on many areas however. I know that Spain is not fully in line with the academic portions of the treaties and therefore there's still some issues with having degrees from outside Spain properly recognized inside Spain and vice versa. It looks likely that Iceland will be the next full member of the EU as they initially didn't want to be controlled economically and financially to the continent. Now that the country is nearly bankrupt and that it's likely they would have had a better go if that HAD been a full EU member, they want in. Although some other countries not formally in the EU currently use the Euro (the statelets like Monaco, Andorra, etc.) as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina, the EU has said that the only way that Iceland gets to use the € is through full membership.

Thanks for the info Z. How work permits, etc are handed out could be a topic in itself.

Back to football!

Tottenham's website earlier had Dos Santos at Ipswich on a loan!!! Sky has a report, too. He would be one of, if not the best, offensive player in the Championship. I hope this is true when I wake up in the morning.

Ipswich just acquired Tamas Priskin as well. Players are coming to Town to play for Keane! We could be Premier next year!!!

Seriously I have a half boner on the Dos Santos news even though it's been kicked around for weeks...

The weird Chelsea boner for Pirlo continues with some reports even saying they're offering Essien back. Very puzzling. A deep lying playmaker would pretty much be at the very bottom of my list of players that Chelsea could use.

I'm a little surprised that Tottenham couldn't find a better loan candidate for Geo considering his breakout in the Gold Cup.

The Kun to Cheksea rumors are just that: rumors, and they're pretty unfounded right now IMO. I'd put the odds of Kun finishing the season in the rojiblanco uniform at around 90% or higher.

It also looks like Pellegrini might start the "Tridente Galáctico" (Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema and Kaká) at Toronto. Should be interesting.

Finally, Fernando Torres is looking forward to playing his old team in Anfield tomorrow. He says that if he scores, he won't celebrate. It should be fun to watch the players go up against him.

Have fun everyone watching the US Mexico game next week. I will be camping and won't get to watch it until I get back next Sunday.

USA squad for next Wednesday. We all talked about who would be on our squad for the WC as of now, and with the importance of this game, I think it is safe to say this is Bradley's submission.

Goalkeepers- Tim Howard (Everton), Brad Guzan (Aston Villa) Defenders- Oguchi Onyewu (AC Milan), Carlos Bocanegra (Rennes), Jay DeMerit (Watford), Jonathan Spector (West Ham United), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA) Midfielders- Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy), Clint Dempsey (Fulham), Michael Bradley (Borussia Moenchengladbach), Ricardo Clark (Houston Dynamo), Benny Feilhaber (AGF Aarhus), Jose Francisco Torres (Pachuca), Stuart Holden (Houston Dynamo) Forwards- Jozy Altidore (Hull City), Charlie Davies (Sochaux), Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo), Conor Casey (Colorado Rapids)

This answers my question...I knew it was part of the EU, I was just confused...
It is actually nothing to do with the EU that Altidore requires a work permit to play in the UK. All EU member nations have the same laws regarding immigration from other EU members (technically EEA members which includes a couple of nations that are not EU member states such as Norway and Switzerland). Altidore is a US citizen though so his case would be handled by each countries individual immigration laws for non-EU citizens. The UK applies the same test to professional sportsmen that it does any other person seeking employment in the UK, whereas most other EU countries grant exceptions which is why the 'work permit issue' is one that always seems to only apply to players moving to British clubs. Something similar actually happens with tax law where in Spain and Italy in particular footballers moving from abroad are tacitly allowed to exploit tax loopholes that mean they are only taxed at something around 20% for the first five years in the country whereas in the UK they are again treated like any other employed person, this has been given as one reason why Ronaldo/Alonso et al were keen to move this summer to Spain. As an aside, the UK does have some opt-outs of EU treaties but only the two. Schengen is one (freedom of movement across borders without requiring a passport, which the UK necessarily opts out of since it is an island, as does the RoI for similar reasons) and the Euro is another (all EU members are technically obliged to adopt the Euro eventually, Sweden and Denmark also have Euro opt-outs).

goltv's coverage of wolfsburg-stuttgart was awful today. if i wanted to wathc it on my computer, i would have. please stop screwing with the picture size every few minutes.

That's actually a really good lineup. I have no real qualms with the roster that Bradley will field in Azteca.

The question is... who starts, and where? Ching to the bench? Davies over him? 'Dolo starting over Spector? Bocanegra on the left?

My lineup:

Altidore Davies

LD Bradley Clark Dempsey

Bocanegra DeMerrit Gooch 'Dolo

Howard

I think that the US played well in South Africa, and this is more or less the same lineup. Let's see how well it works again. Feilhaber will come on for Clark if down a goal in the 2nd half. If still down in min 70, I put Torres on to force LD to the AMC slot behind 2 strikers, one of which is Dempsey. Either that or pull both Davies and Altidore, line Dempsey and LD up top w/ Feilhaber and Torres. Keep that last sub in for any injuries past 70' and in min 85 or so bring on Casey and go with 3 up top.

I think the Us has a shot at getting a draw. I think the US will be extremely lucky to get 3 points, but it is not outside the realm of possibility.

Anyone know if it's possible to watch GolTV online? TFC plays Real Madrid tonight and I can't watch...
justin.tv is your friend braI'm sure it's on there, and likely HD as well.

If you want a better connection, check out the stand alone programs at myp2p.eu, click on sports at the top and then follow the install instructions for SOPCast or one of the others. The speed at justin.tv is only OK, but you don't need special software.

This one is working for me: http://www.justin.tv/riky1

Anyone know the best way to get World Cup tickets for all the US games? There is a chance I am going. I know someone on here mentioned a lottery. Is it too late?

For the Champions League qualifier, Arsenal has drawwwwwwwwwnnnn.....Celtic:cry: oof
Not good.My Atleti have drawn Panathinaikos. Not a great draw either.Real Madrid up 3-0 on Toronto in 25 minutes. The POS old man Raúl has 2. God I hate him. Great cross and assist on the 3rd goal though.

My loathing for Real Madrid grows stronger by the minute. It's approaching Barça levels here people... and might actually exceed them soon.

huh, I completely missed this. Good news though.
I'm not going to be happy if they screw this up. I'll admit I don't know much about the deal(s) but as it is now I can watch every match every week between Setanta and FSC. I sent an email to ESPN a few weeks back when this was first mentioned and they said they would be sending out details but never heard anything.ETA: I just checked (Dish Network) and next Sat. morning lists fishing all morning and Setanta shows the 7:45am match with Team TBD. I don't have a good feeling about this.

On the bright side, can't wait for the Community Shield tomorrow (Sunday) - I know it's just a notch above the friendlies we've had the past few weeks but I'm ready for the post-CR era to start at United. Tons of talent still left in the squad and Valencia and Owen look like they could fit in well. Replacing CR and Tevez is almost an impossible ask but I like the makeup of the squad. I watched the Valencia match and A. Valencia looked fantastic IMO - he's even faster than I remember him being for Wigan and with more quality teammates on the pitch he's going to have more room to work and more teammates setting him up than he's ever had. He won't come close to CR's numbers but I'd be willing to bet he'll have a pretty decent goal + assist tally (something in the 15-18 range I'd guess) and he's already a better defender than CR.

Forlan with a world-class finish from 20 yards...perfect placement.

Atletico are dominating this game against a first-team Liverpool lineup...

BTW, my DirecTV is saying there's Paid Programming on FSC, but it's actually the game.

Just a disclaimer for my fellow DirecTV soccer fans.

Soccer newb question....Where does Atletico rank among the world elite? Or do they rank up there at all?
Well, I think Z Machine can speak to it a little better than I can, but I'd consider them a Champions League Round of 16 border team. They finished 4th in La Liga last year, and they're pretty talented. I'd say a borderline top 16 team in the world....I'd say they're slightly better than an Everton or Aston Villa, but certainly not at the level of a team like Liverpool, Inter Milan, etc.

Well, at least Liverpool isn't losing to the Derby County of La Liga.....

So, defenders are allowed to handball in the penalty box without a whistle.

I'm convinced that the refs won't call anything in the box unless you stab or shoot someone.

Definitely not....they've got some real world class players too. Johnny Heitinga is a fairly regular player for the Netherlands, Diego Forlan is a vet whose played at Villarreal, Manchester United, etc. and was a regular for Uruguay. Simao Sabrosa has been capped a ton of times for Portugal and was one of their true stars in the mid 2000s....I'm not sure if you watched the 2006 World Cup, but THE goal of the tournament was scored by Maxi Rodriguez for Argentina to beat Mexico in extra time. Sergio "El Kun" Aguero is one of the world's rising stars...etc etc..So yes, they've got some talent. So do Sevilla (3rd), Villarreal (5th), and Valencia (6th). As someone who doesn't really follow La Liga very closely, to be honest, it's really tough to tell who's the best of those 4 teams. Desert Power or Z Machine or someone else who "Follows Closely" would know more than I would.

I do have to say that Glen Johnson is going to turn out to be an awesome signing for Liverpool. I want to go on record with that one right now.
