***Official "Space Blanket" for Better Call Saul*** (1 Viewer)

I was away for a few days, so I just saw the latest episode last night. I was surprised with the abrupt departure of Kim from the storyline. Definitely a "rip the bandage right off" moment. Then a jump ahead in time to show that any semblance of Jimmy is gone and Saul has completely taken over.

Regarding the wine scene and Gus. I at first thought it was intended as a sad scene because we realize Gus can not allow friendships or relationships to distract him from his goals.

But, after seeing how cold blooded and sinister he was in BB, I wonder if he doesn't enjoy toying with people making them think he is a kind, gentle, generous man. He has moments as the Chicken Man supporting charities in the community or with the police where everyone says what a great guy he is. Those people and the ones at the restaurant would be shocked to learn the truth about him.

I think he enjoys leading a "double life" and fooling so many people. He was talking about wine with the guy and when he walked away to get the bottle, Gus' eyes went black and he was back to being Gus the drug lord and left.
Gus can compartmentalize with the best of them.

Why does everyone just assume that's the last we see of Kim?   She's not dead and there's 4 episodes left.

IMO there's no way they end a main character's role like that.  We'll see her again.

I think a lot of people would like to see Jimmy and Kim "Live happily ever after"   But I have a feeling that character is done. In fact I hope that's the way it goes. It's ballsy to just end it right there.   It's like the 24 silent clock.  Over and done.

Yep.  I remember when Hank introduced what he had found in S4 of BB, and his boss, Merkert, who was friends with Gus, seemed stunned at the idea of Gus being "their guy" and of course totally believed the story Gus told them when was brought in for questioning about Gale and his fingerprint being in his apartment.

BCS has been so much about Jimmy's transition to the Saul persona. I think we have also seen the transformation of Gustavo Fring from who he was in the flashback scene in BB (where Hector kills his partner) to the Gus we see throughout BCS and most of BB. His name didn't change, but his transformation was equal to Jimmy's.

I come down squarely in the middle of these two takes. I think we do see Kim again, but not as part of a "happily ever after" narrative. Once we finally reach the Gene-verse, the central question will be whether he chooses to be Jimmy or Saul. I could definitely see Kim re-entering the narrative and playing a role in that decision. But I don't see the show ending on a positive note.

Watched the entire last season again and then the current season over the last couple weeks then another 4-5 days to wade through the thread since I last visited. Handed out probably hundreds of likes to all the correct predictions and funny/thoughtful posts. Ready to ride this thing out to the finale. What an amazing show.

And, man, @wikkidpissah had some great posts in this thread. I #(&@&#@ hate he didn't get to see the show to its finish.

I'm really going to savor these last few episodes.  Another great show will eventually come along but I'm not sure how long we'll have to wait.  And please, don't tell me Ozark.
Well, since that show is already done I don't think it makes sense to bring it up as a show that will eventually come along.

Assuming you are talking about ozarks you should probably watch it but it sucks compared to any elite shows. It’s Breaking Bad/Sopranos for people who drink monster energy for breakfast.

Yeah I tried and gave up after season two.  Definitely not breakfast bar worthy.

What’s interesting is that the whole episode was seemingly about him turning back into Saul but that was a Slippin’ Jimmy scam if I ever saw one

Not sure we needed an entire Gene episode just to see that Jimmy is still pulling scams, but the trajectory of this show has been a bit off for me too many times for me to be surprised. When this show is good, it's really great, but then there are times where I just scratch my head.  Tonight was one of those times.  With four episodes left, that was a letdown.

I don’t know if that was good or bad but it certainly wasn’t what I was expecting.
Me neither. I figured we’d progress through the BB years, see Walt and Jessie, and then finish up in Omaha. But clearly the final episodes are primarily about resolving the character arc for Jimmy/Saul/Dean, and that may not be done in linear time.

BTW, an I the only one who wondered if, when Carol Burnett talked about Jeffy getting in with a bad crowd in Albuquerque, we were going to eventually discover that he was the one running a con on Gene? I don’t think that’s actually the case — I think he was just a plot device for Gene to let his Saul Flag fly — but it definitely gave me pause

A little of that but also seemed like he wanted to entrap him so he wouldn't blow his cover (i.e. mutually assured destruction)

From a narrative sense it seems like they should have progressed through breaking bad stuff first, then to Omaha? It almost seemed like they wrapped Gene up tonight with him putting the flashy tie and shirt back on the rack, but now we are going backward to BB again (I guess?) — just odd, but they are the geniuses and I’m the dolt.

I've found there are two kinds of people in this world: Those who think each episode should stand on its own merits, and those who don't care if the ride is bumpy as long as the writers land the plane. I'm generally more in the latter group, but I understand the former

Wow surprised with the negative response to this one. I thought it was a good setup episode. Gene did the scam to feel the rush again and to know he could still pull off this type of con....from recruiting, to planning, to getting away with it.  The outfit at the end was him just hanging it up and realizing it's really over. Like he's now really retired.  Next step is finding Kim.

I didn't mind this episode.  It was no slower than most of the first few seasons of the show.  I know it seems for some to be out of place knowing we need to come back to the BB timeline.  I'll give these writers the benefit of the doubt and see how the story unfolds the rest of the way before casting judgement on the sequencing.  I am sure it is a setup for what ultimately happens to Gene.  Is it also possible when we go back to the BB timeline we see Jeff in some capacity?  After all, he was mixed up with some bad people, right?  Maybe this episode, in part, was to give us a little more exposure to Jeff so we realize who the hell he is when he does show up in some manner in the Saul timeline.

Liked the original much better. They went from an alpha to a beta in the role.
The original actor got cast in another role. Much like with actual cab drivers, you make them wait around too long and they'll ditch you.

It's funny, because even though I know it wasn't planned, the switch you describe actually kind of fits the narrative. After all, Gene went from being scared of the guy to realizing he could run circles around him. Hell, he even joked about Zach Wilson-ing him!

What the #### spoiler was he going to give?

”Fat mall cop convinces wife he’s on a diet but actually eats a giant Cinnabon nightly instead”?
I wondered the same thing. I think by this point the writers are just ####ing with us. They're like the TV equivalent of Lennon writing "Glass Onion" dropping a bunch of references that may or may not have significance, just to send us down rabbit holes

Sepinwall says in his review that this episode wasn't a setup, it was an epilogue for Gene. Could be, but I still can't imagine we spend the last three episodes in the BB-verse, nor that we don't see Kim again.
I'm not on board with this.  I think there is more Gene story to tell.  This episode shows us Saul feeling like Saul again.  Gene's distracting story to the security guard went on about how Gene could just disappear and no one would notice.  I don't think there will be a Gene anymore by the time BCS series ends.  We are just in for some timeline bouncing.
