***Official "Space Blanket" for Better Call Saul*** (3 Viewers)

A question I always had about spanish. In the episode the grandma calls tuco mijo, it sounds like miho but is actually Mi Hijo which means my son. My question is does it shorten to mijo or is she really saying mi-hijo and it just sounds like mijo? When I say Mi Hijo fast I pronounce all three syllables but maybe I am saying it wrong.

 
I'm going with "Mijo" since that was the title of the episode. My guess is that it's a (very common) shortening of "mi hijo"

"mi hijo" is literally "my son". It should be spoken as "me-heeho". But (having grown up in the middle of California) I have never heard it said like that. Any Mexican-American that I know that says "mijo" says it as "me-ho".

I guess it is like English speakers saying "grandma" or "gramma" instead of "grandmother".

 
This show needs more surprising #### to happen

Hopefully they are just laying the groundwork in these first episodes.

Yes, I want it to feel like Breaking Bad. You know they could do it.

Just chill out and enjoy. I think these writers have earned our trust. If it bombs, it bombs. But you can not know this two episodes in.

Agreed. I was severely let down by the kids sticking their johnsons in a corpse' head. Saw it coming a mile away.

 
The opening scene, starting after Breaking Bad, hooked me longterm.

I think they basically told us what is going to happen longterm. I don't think this series is going to end with a depressed Cinnabon maker sitting in his chair and reminiscing about the good ol days. I think it will be the rise, fall, and rise again of Saul Goodman. Now the only downside to going post-breaking bad, is that many of the good characters are dead.

But the possibility does exist, however unlikely, of Jesse returning to meth with Saul as the lawyer.

Other possibilities are endless. What if we actually revisit the events of Breaking Bad, from Saul's perspective.

Those possibilities are years down the road, so we really have no way of knowing if they will or won't happen, as thoughts can change (as can AMC if it sniffs a Breaking Bad -- part 2 series)

Kids doing awful things to a corpse, an out of nowhere car crash, a Tuco appearance, Tuco breaking the legs of two kids...and those are just the first two episodes.

I'd have to go back and watch, but I'd say even Breaking Bad didn't start this fast.

Have to say Episode 2 was MUCH better then Episode 1 and hopefully it will continue on that way..

I understand they were building character depth with episode one but man.. :yawn:

Episode 2 starts with a bang and never let up. :thumbup:

 
BB definitely started faster. They had incapacitated Crazy 8 and killed his partner by the end of the pilot. With that said, I wasn't bought into the show by that.

Again, its a different experience binge watching. But when I watched the first few shows, I was aware of Gilligan's quote about taking Mr. Chips and turning him into Scarface. Through the first few episodes of the show, I felt there was a very real possibility that Walter White was going to be portrayed as a good man who was turned into a monster by circumstance. And I thought that was a boring thesis. It wasn't until I saw Dark Matter (which was Episode 5, I think, the one at Elliot's birthday party) that I realized that the show would present Walter as someone with something rotten eating at him even before the cancer diagnosis. And once that characterization snapped in place (and shortly after when Hank and Marie started being written as something more than cliches) the show clicked for me.

I don't know what the thesis of Better Call Saul is. Maybe its that Jimmy/Saul thinks that he can associate with, and even help, monsters without sacrificing his own humanity. And maybe we'll see him disabused of that notion. Or maybe not. There's a lot of character beats to come.

 
I fell asleep watching episode 2 last night. Need to finish it tonight.

Yeah there's some shocking stuff but it doesn't have any impact if the character development is weak. I hope they get there. BB was edge of your seat from S01E01

BB hooked me with the bathtub falling through the ceiling in Episode 2. It was the first :jawdrop: scene for me and I knew it was gonna be a great ride.

From before even the opening credits. I used to tell friends to just watch the first few minutes before the opening and I dare you not to watch more of it.

 
Uhh...am I the only one that does NOT expect BCS to have as many "OH ####!" moments as BB did and not have a problem with it?

I really don't think this is going to be the exact same type of show.

Nope, you're not the only one. The only thing I was expecting was that is would have the same feel as BB, in the way it was shot, the cinematography, the landscape, camera POVs, detailed sounds, etc...for me, that's enough to keep me watching, as I already love the character(s) and can't wait to see where they take them. Expecting BB V2.0 would be unrealistic - Slippin Jimmy is nowhere near Walter Whites level, he's more of a cartoon character, and I fully expect them to showcase that and make it a fun ride.

Exactly how I feel. The attention to detail and the cinematography is enough to keep me around. I don't expect greatness but will be happy if it gets there.

I concur. I even thought as I was watching the first two that this does have a BB feel to it. It felt like home. It felt like a warm space blanket.

Not sure Slipping Jimmy had much to begin with.. Jimmy/Saul is a natural born con artist.

Scheming, failing to execute, and weaseling. Going to be a fun show :thumbup:

That's a great point. Especially after he'd already escaped once and then was right back in it when the twins sold him out.

I agree. Not unlike most spin-off shows, the first few episodes are probably using clear homage to BB in order to hook all of us BB addicts and build an audience following.

But I imagine as time goes on, the BB references will still be there to develop the backstory, but BCS will develop its own identity.

 
I'm beginning to think the show will at one point (probably at the end) pick up after he's in Omaha at the Cinnabon. They're painting him as the protagonist you feel sorry for and sympathize with, and it's lame for him to just end up with the fate they showed in the prologue.

I think it would cool if seasons 1-3 take place before Breaking Bad, seasons 4-5 mostly take place after Breaking Bad, but the season 4 premier takes place during Breaking Bad, in the form of the most awesome 43-minute BB montage ever.
