***OFFICIAL***The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion thread (1 Viewer)

In the process of getting my Oblivion :nerd: on again after a couple weeks' layoff. I am into the main quest again and travelling to the MD shrine. How long is the main quest in comparison to the guild ones? Do you have to travel around and close butt-loads of gates, or is that just a side thing to do?
You don't need to close all the gates, just the ones that open up immediately outside of cities when you reach a certain point in the main storyline. Unless you need daedra loot or sigil stones its really a waste of time.
I have to admit that I was running around pretty :excited: at all of the new exotics to make poisons. Now if I can just get my alchemy scores a little higher, I will be good to go. I have master level in 2 of the devices and journeyman on the other. I want to go master all the way and see what kind of poisons I can make.

My favorite was one that dished out 8 fire, 7 frost, 8 shock and 3 second paralyze. Poison your blade and get the 6x sneak attack...then another 5-8 slices while they are paralyzed....pwnage.

So for some reason if I even went up to a guard to talk, they'd try to arrest me. I don't know...I must have done something wrong without even knowing it. So I just said the hell with it and killed a bunch of guards. My bounty is now up to 2040. Was that stupid? I saved before I did it, so I can go back.
not that bad -- the next time you encounter guards, just pay up or do the jail time if you dont want to pay. doesnt really do much more than give you more infamy, i believe.
Can I just keep killing them every time? I'm getting a bit bored lately, and killing random people might be fun
you can, but there are plenty more random people to kill than guards :) If you've finished the DB quests, try all the Daedric shrine quests. Some cool missions in there and a lot of nice magic items for rewards.
Nah, not even close to finished with anything yet...just looking for a diversion.
So I go into Bruma and I'm instantly arrested. I try to fight back. At first theres just 3 guards it seems. But they're strong and smart(one shoots from distance while 2 engage in up close battle). So I employ a tactic of hitting and then running all over town and running in circles while healing. This takes a long time. Finally I kill one and I hear one of the townspeople say "There was a murder!" And all of a sudden theres more guys fighting me including someone casting spells on me! I keep on fighting(and btw I'm saving every time I do well for a few minutes so I won't have to go back too far should I die). I accidentally swing at an innocent townsperson who wasn't even trying to fight me, and now she pulls out a weapon and comes after me. All of a sudden there are literally over 10 people fighting me and they corner me and kill me.Is there any easier way to stay alive here?

ETA: Don't tell me to just go to jail...I've determined that I must be a badass theif and killer of innocent people, and badasses don't obey the law....ever. ;)

Two ways:1. Don't kill people.

2. This button: ~

Been working the Mage Guild story. I am just one away from becoming Arch Mage. :nerd:

Actually it does appear to be pretty good as you get your own apprentice for missions once you takeover. More firepower is always good. I don't know if I am leveling to slowly as I am still just a level 7. But I figure that might not be so bad as the bad guys are leveled so adding in the apprentice is like getting a level boost for my side.

For those still playing the first official patch has been released

Thanks for the news. Just got the patch installed.

For those that care I am now Arch Mage and Arena Champion. Getting the old champ to commit suicide by telling him he was half vampire was well worth it.

Quick question. Next time I sleep I should get approached by the Dark Brotherhood. Supposedly killing the former champ counts as a murder to them although it was of course perfectly legal. Any downside to starting this side story while still working the main story?

Nope. The only potential conflict between guilds is thieves guild may get you in trouble with mages guild, but if you are already arch mage, you're even clear of that concern.

It's good to be Arch.

 Just completed the Mages Guild a few days ago myself. All I got left is the Main Quest, the Daedric quests, and most of the Figher's Guild. Arena, Thieves, and Brotherhood are done.

very disappointed in this game compared to Morrowind.

i liken this game very much to Fable in both gameplay and story depth.

this wasn't an RPG at all. this was an action-adventure game. and by that categorization, Deus Ex was a much better action-adventure game.

I can't imagine any angle which you would approach this where Morrowind is better than Oblivion.
Morrowind has 4x the number of NPCs located in 2x the number of cities. It has nearly 8x the number of lines of dialogue.

It has more than double the number of guilds.

It has more spells, more skills.

To finish your quests, you actually have to read your journal and pay attention to what people say.

That all leads to a more immersive world.

When you level in the game, you have a sense of accomplishment in that the things you had a hard time with are now easier and that you can now do things you couldn't before. Oblivion says: "You can do anything at any level, we'll scale it for you!" which completely removes any sense of accomplishment. Added to that, once you hit level 15+, EVERYTHING in the game has full daedric or glass armor - ie, the best and rarest in the game. Ok, Mr. Bandit is now as strong as Divath Fyr was in morrowind, the ONLY character to have full daedric and one of the most powerful wizards in the Tamriel world.

Morrowind has unique items which can be obtained throughout the world. Lots of them, in fact. Oblivion has 6, total.

I could name more, but that's enough to prove in my mind that Morrowind is a superior RPG in almost every way.

Granted, Oblivion has some very needed improvements. Namely: the new combat system is WAY better, the spell casting system is more streamlined, the graphics look terrific, the new monsters are well done (mostly - trolls look silly), and some quests have been better scripted.

But the AI system for the most part is ########, which was the biggest reason behind the lack of NPCs in the world. NPC interaction consists of: "Hello. Heard any news?"||"Yes, I heard that ..."|| "Wow. Ok. Bye."|| "Bye." which is terribly lame.

Morrowind, redone with Oblivion's graphics and spell/combat system but sans voiceovers and radiant AI, would be the vastly superior game.

Hmm. I didnt notice the difference in # of NPCs, but I'll take your word for it. The Travel, the Fighting, the graphics, are all way better in OBl. The leveled enemies are a plus in my book. -- to me that leads to a more immersive world. You can go wherever you want to without fear of running into you aren't "supposed" to run into for another 10 levels. The fact that wandering off and doing your thing in MW may mean that you would either spank someone like a toddler, or else get demolished by a super-char -- made it feel like you had to do thingsin a more linear fashion, which IMO hampered the "open end" feeling that Obl has.

Oh well. Different strokes and all that.

Would it be worth it to go get a copy of Morrowind to play after finishing Oblivion?
if you liked games like Baldurs Gate and would be willing to deal with out-dated graphics, yes. Morrowind is probably still my favorite game of all time, followed closely by Deus Ex and Baldurs Gate series.truthfully, Morrowind is a love/hate type of game though. You either love it, and play it for well over 500 hours (not exaggerating), or you hate it and can't get through the first hour. Most people who hate it tend to call Oblivion the best game ever, followed by whatever other game with pretty graphics that came out recently :bag:

on the PC version, there are a TON of great mods out there to make Morrowind look FANTASTIC. texture replacement, model replacement, new animations, the works. There are some great websites cataloging these I could toss in here if you're serious.

Love to see them. This is really my frst time with this kind game. I am normally an FPS type.

I'll agree that Oblivion isn't much of a RPG... You don't have many decisions to make that affect any of the storylines, the combat is much more like an action game than an RPG, and levelling is really irrelevant... You could go through and beat the main quest and still be a level 5 or lower. There isn't much complex dialogue... That said, its a great game in its own right, not really much to complain about other than the occasional bug.

the combat in morrowind is pretty terrible, to be honest. basically a clickfest until it dies. but the game is setup such that combat isn't the only thing to do, unlike oblivion where the majority of the quests say "go to this point on your map and kill all."i'll edit this post to include a list of the mods i use and generally useful mod sites.

(have some work to do tonight, so i'll be brief: here's the most comprehensive list imho)

http://www.mwmythicmods.com/telesphoros.htm

morrowind with expansions nowadays only costs like $20 for the pc anyway =P

I would very very very HIGHLY recommend playing Deus Ex if you've never played it. It's technically an FPS, but with lots of role-play in it. Widely considered one of the best games ever made. Hard to find nowadays though. Deus Ex 2 came out, which was atrocious.

there you go -- honestly buy that if you're an FPS fan. 100% worth it.

i agree completely. as a game, it's very good. as a followup to morrowind, it's a pretty big let-down. and the makers have gotten an earful from players on their message board over the past 3 months. literally 75% of the threads are comparisons between oblivion and morrowind, citing why morrowind is the superior game lol

I have 0 interest in morrowind so maybe it was a great move to mix up the formula though.

   Deus Ex is so f'in fantastic, I think I must've completed it 7 or 8 times. Between that and Half-Life for my favourite game of all time.

And yes, avoid the sequel, it sucks. I just hope they come out with a third to right the wrongs that were made.

I'll give Deus Ex    alsoAnd the sequel was a huge let down

I dont know exactly, but I'd guess it's at around 180? I finished without about 150 completed and I left most of the daedric shrine quests undone, and some of the random sidequests.

This month's Comp Gaming World has a head-to-head battle between Tom and Bruce to see who can accumulate the most points in five different areas in 30 game days. As always, it's some pretty funny stuff.

Yeah, that was good. I enjoy that feature a lot.

Working on getting all the mage recommendations to get into the Mage's Guild
I have not played this game in a while, but I know as soon as I reinstall it on my gamer that I will be hooked. THat game is so freaking pretty with both HDR and AA - not a better looking game on the market.

Wood Elf noob here. Man this game is nuts.

Majority of times when I pick something up, I have to drop something. Any advice on what to keep (books, basic clothing, assassin clothing which is 3+3, all these things I can't mix right now, etc)? When I go slightly over, I drop arrows since I have 100+. I'm only about 4 hours in.

Also, if I just let an archer shoot at me while I have my shield up, will that improve a skill?

Starting out early, you really have to pick and choose what you want to keep. Makes it a little more fun that way. Generally, no need to keep books or basic clothing. Stick to main armor, healing potions, a melee weapon and a missile weapon. Other than that, keep crap that will get you money.IMO, the best way to get your armor or shield skills up is to let a mud crab attack you time and again, healing as needed.

Has anyone tried making the "invisible armor"? Apparently, all chameleon spells stack, and though you cannot do more than 20% chameleon on anything, if you are wearing 5 20% chameleon items, you can attack with impunity because you are completely invisible with none of that reappear BS of invisibility spells.

Cool I'll have to look into that.

One of my buddies is trying that. He has a set of armor that he is enchanting with chameleon. He claims it almost makes the game too easy. He has another set of armor that he enchanted with feather so he can go cave / mine / dungeon diving and carry off a lot more loot.

If you follow "Tom vs Bruce" in CGW, this was done by Tom to cheat. Basically, you can attack at will, since they cannot retaliate and steal whatever you want. Personally, I would only want like 90% chameleon, just so I would have that awesome "Predator"-shimmery look.

I don't know how he did it, but my buddy whp was staying with us logged in about 50 hours in only a few weeks time did somehting liek this. It may just be his armour. His character rocks. He's some sort of invisable bow assassin. I logged in his character just to fool around and he's lightining quick and hits a ton.I'm just a Nord Barb who destroys people. I will do the Ranjer or caster next time, as I susually star games like this with a barb type character till I figure everything out.

I just started up again, I haven't played since May. I'm working ont he mage recommendations. I also love how you can just pick up right where you left off. Every other RPG type game I have ever played, if I put it down, I could never just back into it. Oblivion is perfect when it comes to this.

still chugging away in the game. I am home sick from work today :X so I figured I would play some Oblivion to help pass the time.

I have played about 120 hours so far without starting the main quest :pickle:

I am debating starting a new character for the heck of it. For all the Elder Scrolls games, I am always a thief type character.

I am debating on creating either a fighter or a mage type new character and need some input. Which would be the better option for oblivion? It would be cool to be the fighter tank, destroying everything in my way but at the same time it would be cool to do more advanced forms of magic.

Any input would be welcomed.

So I was on my way to see Jauffre to give him the amulet and decided to stop in a cave. Man that sucker took a long time to complete, two nights worth of playing. I had to go out two times to get some sleep to refill my health bar.

At least I figured out you can use the go here option on the map. That saves some time if you're not looking to explore.

One thing that is boggling me is this persuation technique. Any tips? I understand you want the maxed out wedge to be selected in the things the other character is positive about. But what am I trying to accomplish? I just don't get it.
