Will people get sick of Negan having control over the group and lose viewers?  No matter how interesting and perhaps in a sick way, likable Negan is, viewers still want to see the main group kick butt.   I'm afraid those days may be behind us, and if not, at least 2 or 3 years away.  I think viewers will get sick of Negan just like they did the Governor.  But this is the apocalypse and things don't go the way you want them to.  Maybe Coral grows up and grows stronger and kills Negan someday?

Naw... the governor was never particularly engaging or charismatic. I can't put my finger on it but he never did it for me.... 

Negan might instantly be my favorite character on the show

 
I thought Carl being willing to sacrifice his arm to save the group was a great scene. Strong moment for the kid. Negan's right about him. He is a future serial killer. That's probably the one person in the group Negan shouldn't turn his back on right now.

What I really want to see most right now is a strong King Ezekiel. With Rick broken to the core we need to see a strong adversary for Negan. Rick's going to be built back up. We know that's coming because Rick won't stay beaten down for the rest of the show and Negan won't continue to hold the upper hand for the rest of the show. But the show needs Rick to have strong allies with him. I'm hoping Ezekiel is a strong ally for Rick, especially since he just lost two of his strongest.

Hopefully not at the expense of the main group, which I think viewers still want to be the focal point of the show, not Negan.

 
Will be real interesting to see what happens to Daryl and his psyche.  He is responsible for Glenn's death....wonder if he is going to spiral out. 

 
Spoiler about Ezekiel:

Supposedly Carol and Morgan find him in the tv series (as opposed to Jesus introducing him to Rick in the comics) and it will happen in episode 3.  They plot together to take on Negan which will most likely take up the entire rest of the season for any kind of final showdown, then we can wait all summer to see the climax.  Rinse and repeat.

shouldn't be much more of an expense to the main group. Fall in line and do what Negan needs and things will be fine. in my opinion Rick and his group needed this wake-up call. Half the people in here think Rick and Daryl need to go and kill everyone who doesn't agree with them and that both of these guys are Rambo's. The end of last season and this episode were a little dose of reality for Rick and his group, you can't always out-muscle everyone and kill off the bad guys, world is a little more complicated then that

For the non-comic readers in here, if they do Negan right (and so far, so good), just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Halfway wish we had a full season of Negan's Reign, vs him immediately facing confrontation at XXXX . I want to see more of what Negan's world is like.

As someone who has read the comics, I was really disappointed with the Governor. They didn't get that character right. Negan, in the comics, is a much more imposing figure. Like the size of a wrestler. But the guy playing him has done enough of a great job to overlook that difference. Really good episode last night although it still doesn't take away from the poorly executed finale last season, imo. I think the killings would have had much more of an impact had they done it last season and we would have been wondering where this show goes now over the summer, like we are doing today.

I completely agree with this. I was concerned at first, but it seems to be working out. Considering I think Negan is almost as important of a character in the story I am glad they haven't ruined it

I never got this far in the comics, but I agree with both of you.  This show badly needed a compelling villain, and it looks they did a great job of casting Negan in a way that's going to bring some energy back into this thing.  In two episodes so far (counting last season's finale), he's been exactly the kind of scenery-chewing antagonist that this series needed.

I like this setup. THIS is how the apocalypse would be. Without the rule of law, the fierce rule.

Is this that much different than warlord run sections of Africa, for instance?

 
Not to rip on the comics fans but I'm glad I don't read the comics so I don't come in with any preconceived ideas about how I think Negan (or any other characters should look or behave) or how any storylines should play out. I see a lot of this in the Marvel films too. I could care less how they compare to the comics or if they differ a lot. For me, all that matters is what I'm watching. I don't read the comics so what happens there is irrelevant. Any differences are immaterial. As far as this show I'll occasionally look to the comics to see if there are any similarities or see what may have happened to characters or storylines just to out of curiosity (like with Glenn in Issue 100) but for me the TV storyline is all that ultimately matters. 

Again, not trying to rip on the comics fans. Just happy I didn't come into this show with any preconceived ideas or thoughts about what to expect. It's made the show so much more fun to watch. It's all new. I can see it both ways. I don't really know any of the storylines in the Marvel movies, although I don't watch them all, and I didn't read and Game of Thrones books, so I like seeing it with a completely open mind. But there is some fun in knowing what's coming and seeing how they pull it off. Also, they purposely throw some twists to the comic fans to keep them guessing.  

 
I know it wouldn't be much of a show without this but....Negan doing all this #### to them then keeping them alive is pretty much Dr. Evil explaining everything to Austin Powers then setting the timer for 10 minutes and leaving him alone in the room with all the plans and a gun and telling him where he'll be at.

 
I see no reason* why Negan would leave Rick and this crew alive. Bash them all and you don't have to worry about the revenge factor, and you still have the rest of Alexandria to provide you with the fruits of their labor and they will be willing subjects. I fail to see how the incremental gain received from having 8 extra people working for you overshadows, again, the quest for revenge and also the fact that this group killed a bunch of your own guys.

*-outside of it being a TV show, of course.

and for those calling Rich out, I still have yet to hear what he was supposed to do. Was he going to take Negan out with the hatchet vs the machine gun? Rick had about 5% chance of maybe killing Negan throughout this, he had no chance and would have had the whole group killed if they kept trying to do dumb things like fight back. Lot of armchair QBs in here thinking Rick has super powers and can win whenever he wants. Negan just brought them back to the real world. :drops mic:

To be fair, Rick's group was deadlier with weapons than a NAVY SEAL team that has been together for a dozen years.  If they tried...they probably could have eliminated 80-85% of Negan's crew and only lose the Red Shirt gay guy.

It is interesting that my wife's reaction to him is "he's not scary" I tried to explain to her that it's not about him being scary, it's that he's capable of doing what he wants because he has an army behind him. One on one, Rick could handle him. She was just hoping for a more imposing figure. Not that it matters, she's not a big fan of the show and never cares if she misses an episode.

 
I haven't read all the posts about the episode; are there really people who think Rick and the group could've taken Negan's group out? Seriously? They would've been wiped out in seconds. They had no weapons and Negan's group was fully armed. They would've been slaughtered. Please tell me people aren't saying that. That's worse than the Lori is still alive stuff back in Season 3. 

 
Negan didn't really do "eenie meenie" accurately, so I guess he had Abraham in mind all along. Probably because he was the most physical threat of the group and kind puffed up his chest towards Negan at one point. Glen was chosen because of his outburst.

Makes sense. Abe represented a threat and Negan wanted to take him out to make a point. Can't have someone that formidable being left behind. When Abe made it clear he was willing to be sacrificed Negan took note of that, saw the potential threat Abe presented and probably made up his mind right then he was gonna be the one to get killed and just made a show of it for sport.

The gov was never even close to Neegan in regards to character and the actor.. People are going to "Love to Hate" Negan. I think 1 season will be about what it takes before people want to move on. I know I personally won't mind a season build up of "how do we rid the world of Negan? "  :popcorn:

sometimes, I like to read about the dark ages - kings, and all that.  How does a particular family become king?  Eventually, royalty comes from bloodline and some claim of Divine Providence.  In the beginning though, the guy who became King was really the toughest guy of the toughest clan.

Destroying that group, even if you bring back the bodies wouldn't be enough.. As he said..  he uses people to do the hard work for him.. Killing them takes away his work force.. Destroying the leaders will to oppose him is the way he gets "Half their stuff" without needing to do anything other then show he will :deadhorse:

I'm not saying this show is as good as Game of Thrones (it isn't) but I don't see how anyone can complain about the violence on this show and this episode in particular and still be a fan of Game of Thrones. Not pointing fingers at anyone here; just making a general statement. GOT is just as unrelenting in its level of violence and perhaps moreso.

HBO doesn't have a double standard though.  AMC is a channel that won't show nudity and has to bleep out every swear word and yet it's perfectly ok to bash someone's head in with a baseball bat to the point his eye pops out of socket?  The Parents Television Council should have a field day with this one.

The first scene of the first episode shot a girl zombie in the face. Safe to say we all knew what we were getting into right from the start. Think it's pretty ridiculous for people to be getting all up in arms now about this sort of thing. Rick sliced a guy in the head with a hatchet back in Season 3. Last night's deaths were certainly brutal but this show has been pushing the envelope since the opening moments of the first episode. People losing their s**t now are just making me shake my head. I stand by my point. GOT is just as unrelenting with its violence. Yes it's the superior show but if you're going to praise that show and rip on this one for its violence I'm going to call you a hypocrite. GOT's violence is just as brutal, often far worse, than what we see on this show. Last season saw a character fed to a pack of dogs. That same character once chopped a guy's **** off. I'd say that's pretty freakin brutal.
