It annoys me a bit too, but I am trying to get over it.  The directors of the series will not figure out how to go from scene to scene in any given episode and will instead focus on one central theme per episode, so might as well learn to deal with it.

That's what I was thinking when Rick got pushed into the pit. Two men enter, one man leave.

Just got a chance to watch the latest episode.  Ugh.  Lots of turnoffs for me right now.  I'm still probably 100% invested in seeing this show through until it's completion whenever that may be, just because I've invested so much time into it already, but damn they are making it tough.  Lots of headscratching writing going on these days. 

1. Garbage Pail Kids leader girl talks like a 3 yr old.  "Me want guns.  No bother people.  Live in trash.  Grunt grunt...."   :X
2. Rick has fought multiple walkers, barehanded, in the dark, has killed hundreds of them without a gun or traditional weapon, is arguably the best killer in the surviving world, but all of a sudden he turns into Eugene just because a walker has spikes sticking out of him? Maggie dispatched one in S2 at the prison in full out riot gear in about 0.25 seconds. 
3. Daryl has become the moodiest character on the show.  I may be in the minority on this one, but I grew to hate Jesse Pinkman in BrBa in the later seasons because he was so damn  brooding all the time.  Daryl is the same way now...love Norman Reedus, but the writers have ruined Daryl Dixon. 
4. Someone else said it before...this whole storyline of "Carol is a delicate flower who can't be given any bad news or it'll upset her" is idiotic.  She killed a kid, secretly executed sick people at the prison in order to save the group (knowing it would get her exiled), led an assault on Terminus with a bottle rocket, pulled off the two-faced show of demure housewife/suburban commando when they got to Alexandria, but she might just have a breakdown if she finds out the Saviors killed Glenn and Abe.  Writers should have had Daryl tell her everything, and either she snaps out of it and says "lets go kick their asses", or Daryl walks out of the house alone, and we never have to see Carol's character again on the show, just let her be a hermit and ignore her forever.  The fragile flower BS needs to end ASAP.  Same goes for Morgan IMO...he should go live in the house with Carol so they can quilt together and sip coffee and die of boredom.

Tara holding onto her torch of honor for some girl she isn't supposed to ever see again in her life, by not telling Rick and Co. about Oceanside, even though she knows this group has all the guns they'll need AND they have a grudge against the Saviors JUST LIKE HER GROUP DOES.   But oh no, she promised Cindy she wouldn't say anything...stupid 

I agree with you for the most part, but think there's still time to rebound.  Just a couple of thoughts.  

1.  Yep.  Me want guns NOW.  Show him up up up.  Dumb Dumb Dumb.  

2.  Yep.  Although, he was just tossed down into a pit.  I thought it would have been better if he'd hurt his leg on the fall, or something to hamper his ability to fight.  Then he did impale his hand on one of the spikes.  That's gotta hurt.  But the keyboard to the helmet was really dumb.  

3.  Daryl was traumatized at the Savior's compound.  The way he killed Fat Joey showed he was under a little stress and hadn't been having a good week.  He seemed fine to me until he heard the name Carol from Richard.  Then when he was with Carol he seemed fine.  I'd like to give him a pass.  He is the show's most beloved character, I'd wager.  And he'll be fun to watch during the war with Negan.  

4.  Meh..  Carol's journey has been a major story line in the show.  Carol was in full-on survival mode, at any cost... until Alexandria.  Because prior to Alexandria, her group was in constant danger.  Then the group began to settle into some normalcy, at least for a zombie apocalypse.  It was a shock to Carol's system (and to Sasha's as well) and she still didn't trust anyone until some time passed.  But she softened.  She even began to open up to Tobin, who was sweet on her.  She talked with Morgan and had time to process the point he was trying to make about killing humans.  She wrote down a list of living people that she had killed since the prison and it began to get to her.  She didn't like the person she saw and decided she didn't want to kill again.  But, after the Wolves and all, she realized if she stayed there she may eventually have to kill again, to protect people like Tobin.  She didn't want him or anyone else to get close to her and she went into a shell.  She eventually thought it best to leave.  She didn't know how she'd react if anyone threatened her but she was prepared with the gun up her sleeve.  She got her answer when the Saviors stopped her.  She killed and then had a break down.  Morgan finds her and brings her into the kingdom, another peaceful place.  Like in Alexandria, she doesn't want to get close to anyone or have anyone get close to her.  So she leaves the kingdom and chooses to live alone in the house.  

She was meek at first, then became tough when she realized it was necessary to survive and to help her group survive.  But when things calmed down a little she got to reflect on what she'd become and didn't like it anymore.  I think we can all agree that we like her in survival mode and want her to want vengeance on the goobers that killed Glenn and Abe.  And time will probably accommodate that.  

But she is not a "delicate flower who can't be given bad news or it'll upset her."  She's already upset.  She's a damaged and confused killer.  She was coping well, then she sees Daryl and those feelings came back.  She thought about the group she loved and didn't want to see or think about them being harmed.  Daryl recognizes that it wasn't the time to tell Carol because the only news that would give her happiness was the news that everyone is okay.  IIRC, when Daryl leaves her house, he is leaving the kingdom and going back to the hilltop.  He's giving up on Richard and Ezekiel and seeking help elsewhere.  He'll try to destroy the Saviors himself if he has to.  But he doesn't want to put Carol in danger by dragging her with him on what he might consider a suicide mission (if it comes to that).  I don't have a problem with him not telling her about the deaths and what he went through.  She'll get caught up on what happened from someone else.  

5.  Agreed on Tara keeping silent.  That was annoying.  But, it was at the end of the episode.  I'm guessing she either tells Rick about Oceanside, or she goes back to Oceanside and tries to talk to the daughter that she befriended and ask for their help.  If she doesn't get it, maybe she'll disclose everything to Rick and Michonne and they end up taking Oceanside or something.  I'll give her a chance to speak up before concluding that she is a moron for keeping a secret promise at the expense of her whole group's survival.

Daryl and the Tiger scene seemed to be some foreshadowing.  I assume the Tiger eats Negan.

Rick's always been the lead character. Kirkman has said repeatedly the show is told from his perspective. I'm only speaking for myself but if Rick goes the show ends for me. There are other characters I like but Rick Grimes is the key one and always has been for me. There is no Walking Dead for me without him. 

ETA - I wonder how much of Lincoln's screen time being scaled back is a way to keep him invested in continuing the show. Seven seasons of being in every single episode would take its toll. Maybe Gimple and AMC execs have talked to him and said that we'll cut back your time if you keep with us. Would make sense.

Agree, Rick is the only untouchable character.

Plenty of things in the episode bothered me. The Daryl stuff didn't.  

Rick acting like he'd never seen a walker before when he got thrown in the pit was far worse than any of the Daryl stuff. Then again, pretty much everything about the junk yard kids stuff was real weak. 

Agreed on the zombie. I could have handled that walker with the rubbermaid boxes Rick ignored that I linked above and I have 0 experience killing a walker.

I get it.  There have been lots of characters throughout the series that have gone through inner struggles.  Rick and his hallucinations after Lori died.  Becoming a farmer and hanging up the guns, then eating a dude's Adam's apple raw and with no hands. Glenn and his finally having to kill humans at the satellite tower.  Carl killing an unarmed kid in the woods.  Daryl being broken down by the Saviors, and losing Beth.  Michonne and her pre-apocalypse past.  Etc etc etc. They're all complex characters.  They all struggle with life in the zombie apocalypse, and whether or not to be decent humans or to defend themselves however it takes. I get that people will probably feel this way if this was a real situation. Not everyone is Shane, and that's probably a good thing.  That's not my issue. 

My issue is how it's written and presented to us viewers.  I get that they're trying to show Carol's inner struggle.  "No I don't want to kill, I'll just leave, but I'll hide an Uzi up my sleeve just in case.  Oh look, I have to use it, but now I'm crying while I do because I'm so torn up inside". I think it's obvious that at some point she's going to go back to killing, otherwise they'd just move her to the cabin and ignore her in the show.  But it just comes across to me like the writers are trying to beat us over the head with "look at how Carol is conflicted, she's so broken, the struggle is real".  I dislike the Carol scenes right now because they don't tell me anything at all other than " Carol is still struggling with her emotions and thoughts".  Same ####, different day. Bring her back when something happens to make her turn 180.  I thought the Glenn/Abe news was that moment, but it didn't happen. 

I do appreciate you taking the time to write out everything you did, Jayrok.  And I don't mean to come across as argumentative.  I think I'm arguing from the other end of the same side of the fence you are.

Rewatching the last episode now and I noticed two things. First the scavengers are not as illiterate on second watching and second they actually jump between storylines in this episode.

The second thing is a huge upgrade and hope it stays around.

For ruthless thieves and scavengers, the saviors have some crappy rooms and things.  Atari 2600?  Dwight has a lousy TV and VHS system?  Every room should have big LCD TVs and blue ray players with a massive collection of dvds, laptops, books etc.  They barely have any of the creature comforts of home.  I get that there is no internet, but I would have ripped all the music that I can find onto it, grabbed every old computer program from the old people's houses and have all the stand alone software that used to be out there etc.

Sure they have food, but barely anything else.

So in order to make everyone believe he truly was Negan's *itch, he came up with the story of Sherry spilling her guts about the Doc helping Daryl before the Dead literally spilled her guts.

Thanks.  I remember D telling the doctor that he killed Sherry and he probably didn't want the doctor to run and tell Negan he killed her instead of bringing her back.  Plus he could kill two birds with one stone by shifting blame for Daryl's escape to the doctor.  I'd need to see the scene again.. I didn't remember D telling Negan that the Dr let Daryl go.

The one interesting exchange for me was Negan asking Eugene if he provided this sort of help to Rick. It made me think Rick sort of squandered having Eugene, having him guard gates and such. There was the one scene where Eugene recommended that corn seed, but other than that he was a non-contributor.

In an attempt to make the show interesting they are going to have Eugene start cooking the blue meth, they are going to give the pills to Brock driving Jessie over the edge, and Badger will fascinate Negan with his Star Trek script idea, gaining his confidence before eventually crushing his head under an automatic teller machine or failing to turn him on his side in his sleep causing him to aspirate some vomitus.

I like Eugene so I thought it was a pretty good episode.  A backstory on him would be interesting.  His knowledge of different things seems pretty extensive.  I'd imagine the vast majority of us (probably all of us) couldn't do his balloon experiment without the internet or a book and couldn't make a killing pill without the internet or a book or something.  Seems like Negan's world is a lot better for him than Rick's.

Yeah, Eugene is better off in this world than being scared all the time in Alexandria.  He's always been about himself and does whatever he needs to in order to survive.  I'd like to see a back story on him as well.  He told Negan that he didn't exactly have an eidetic memory, but he reads a lot and picks up most all knowledge that has been dropped near him.

Eugene is gonna BS the Survivors, much like he did with Rick's group.  Will be interesting to see how the show handles it.  If it will be his downfall or not.  Rick's group let him live, will be interesting to see what Negan does, if it comes to that.

this is one of the little things that bugs me on this show. The constant driving of 30yo cars is so dumb. they would be rolling in newer SUV's or in cars with really good gas mileage.  Like you said, really an Atari?

hard to tell around here what people consider a spoiler. I don't think it is a true spoiler but it is something happening IRL that possibly ties into your post
