***Official*** Washington Redskins 2015 Offseason Thread (1 Viewer)

Couple observations:

Right side of the Oline looked pretty good in the run GM.

Rg3

the bad: Griffin took too many hits, again. That hitch on the 3rd down play on the second drive was inside and could have been a pick six. I noticed it was a rookie wr, so its understandable, but the throw was way off. The Garcon drop wasn't pretty and should have been caught, but the throw was late and to the wrong shoulder.

The good: he got them to the line very early in the playclock, something that didn't seem to happen a lot last yr. On the surface, he seems to have a better grasp of the offense. Overall: not awful, but not good.

Matt Jones looks good. Well worth a mid/late 3rd Rd pick in dynasty rookie drafts.

Really want to see Crowder in the slot this preseason.

Good containment by the young edge setters at LB.

I'm starting to think that RG3 is just always going to take those hits. It is what it is. But given some protection he will be able to make plays. He just needs to get consistent with his throws and more confident.

I unfortunately did not see the game. I did watch the highlights and saw the Garcon drop. He had to slow down for sure but also has to make that catch.

Quick question for those who watched: if Garcon catches that ball, Griffin's numbers automatically go from being mediocre to good. But beyond the numbers, does Griffin look like a guy so far who is finally comfortable and capable of running the Gruden offense? Or is it looking like we're just playing out an end game here.

I know that "it's too early to judge"...I get that. I'm just asking for an educated surmise from someone who saw him play.

No and yes.

I was wondering if he actually wants to get hit a bit to prove to himself that he's fully healthy and able to play again. I gave him a lot of credit last night (too much?) for standing in there to get the throw off.

I can think of 3 "hits" Griffin took last night. One was the play-action rollout pass to Grant/Paul. Looked like he stumbled a bit on the rollout and just had enough time to try to square up and get rid of the ball. I guess he could have just fell to the ground to avoid a hit, but I kind of like his choice there. Another was on a third down play on a pass to Garcon in the endzone. I think protection broke down there based on a couple tweets I saw, Griffin almost slipping up and blaming his OL during an interview with Portis, and Trent Williams talking about a problem the OL had on one play. I think a blitzer was mostly untouched. Griffin stood in there, took the hit, and got the pass off. Not sure what he was supposed to do on that one. Other than the pass being off, I think he did what he's supposed to do. The third hit I can think of was on the 3rd down scramble. My guess is if he slides then he doesn't pick up the first down and it really wasn't much of a hit that he absorbed. Again, I like what he did there.

Any other hits?

This one bothered me. The line HAS to be able to give him the time to throw that ball. I think they had a decent play called and there was a guy in his face immediately, no chance to let the play develop and lob that ball in.

Griffin did everything he could in that situation, really.

No other hits that I remember him taking. To your point, I thought he showed great poise on the untouched blitz hit while throwing the pass right along the edge of the endzone where only PG could make the catch. I did notice on both of the "jump balls" thrown to PG, it look like he stumbled coming off of the line a bit and both times it kept him from really making a play on the ball.

Back to the original topic: Did you also notice that the hit he took on the rollout was a direct helmet blow to the dong pouch? Made me cringe.

Here are my thoughts on the game. Note: I am assuming the Browns are a pretty weak team. This assumption is the opposite of Joe Theisman, who talked about how great the Browns' starting defense is so good and that we did anything is great.

Griffin looked ok. Certainly not great. But he did stood in the pocket with no running backwards to escape the pressure. Running backwards and not keeping his eyes down field when scrambling is a big issue to me.

The starting OL and running game looked pretty good.

The starting defense sure made McCown and the Cleveland offense look good. The past couple of years, journeymen QBs have their best game of the year against the Redskins. I was hoping to see more from the starting D. Cleveland was aided by a bogus pass interference call and Andre Roberts fumble on the punt return.

The Redskins' 2nd string offense is much better than Cleveland's 2nd string D. Cousins played just about flawlessly. No one could really ask of more from him.

Cousins ran a number of plays with a read option look. It is hard to tell if they were real read options or not. My conclusion: Griffin and Cousins are both running plays they need to practice. So Griffin was a pocket passer. Cousins ran the read option. This also means that Griffin will be running some read option when the season starts.

You are now the coach. You have to win 8 games this year to keep your job. Who are you starting at QB? Go...
I'm thinking more about the future, so im starting RG3 to see what we have in him and to see if he can learn and execute the system. We made the investment, we need to see it through and if it doesnt pan out, then at least we know and can move on.

Coach Gruden, or coach nittanylion?

Actually, the answer is probably the same: Cousins. Before I close the book on Gruden, I want to see his schemes being run through a QB who has more in common with the prototypical NFL QB - closer to an Andy Dalton type. I think that's only fair, and if he hadn't been hired here, I think that's what he'd be being given the opportunity to do with another Team. Not sure yet if Gruden will ultimately be a solid HC, or a better OC, but now that the Draft Picks are water under the bridge, and Griffin's mobility/athleticism has been permanently compromised, I'm ready to move on. In my mind, the QB issue is settled. Now I want to see what we have in a Coach, and the best way to see that if by giving him the opportunity to doing his thing, with his type of guys.

I'll take the guy who won rookie of the year and won us our first division title in a very long time and had us up 14-0 on the Seahawks in the playoffs on one leg.

That guy no longer exists and more importantly, doesn't want to or at least didn't want to run that system anymore. The guy is a complete dope. I mean I enjoy watching the train wreck from afar but can't for the life of me figure out why people think that guy can play in this league as anything other then a specialist.

As I stated prior to the 2012 season, he's a KR/PR who can throw, would amount to nothing more then a 1 read option QB who would eventually get hurt.

ETA- Baylor does not prepare it's players for the NFL.

 I think 3 years is long enough to keep saying the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

Cowboys thread is thatta way, pal.

Actually I want to apologize for posting this in this thread. I honestly thought this was in the what's next for RGIII thread. Despite what you may think, I don't say this stuff just to piss you guys off. It's just my honest take and I enjoy talking football all day and every day. My bad fellas, have a good one.

Insider Buzz: Redskins Want Full Season of RG3 to Make Final Call on His Future

I think its the right call. At least we should know one way or another by then.
Wonder if they promised Gruden another year with a different QB if RG3 doesn't work out. That's the only way I think he'll keep playing him.
well gruden knew the deal when he signed on though. plus i could see mcglaughton bringing in his own guy if things dont work out.

Whether you like Griffin or not, he's pretty clearly the best QB on the roster.
Which is what makes last year's QB carrousel that much more frustrating. Gruen actually thought McCoy was a starter in this league. McCoy!

What should really bother you is that the best QB in the NFL has looked terrible, got hurt, will probably not play another minute of the preseason to protect him, and will still be guaranteed the starting QB job until he gets hurts again or Richie Rich grows a brain

couldnt really evaluate him tonight as he got destroyed on every dropback. I am concerned that we have to pay him the guaranteed money if he gets injured however.
