Open Secrets in your field (1 Viewer)

If you have any kind of invasive OP medical procedure (like ambulatory surgery, colonoscopy, etc), and something goes bad with your case, the center will cal 911 and you'll be transported to a hospital.  You'll get minimal life saving measures at the op center (unlike if you were already at a hospital having the procedure).
Oh cool, now I'm REALLY looking forward to my colonoscopy next week.

ASCs require no where near the rigorous inspections by JCAHO.  So while they make look shiny and pretty, you have no idea what's going on behind the scenes.  And better facility and staff is laughable if you're talking about a modern research or university based hospital with a robust teaching program.  Maybe so if you go to some podunk community hospital in bumm #### nowhere.

Sure nurses ##### but nurses ##### wherever they work.  They're 95% women for ####s sake.
Except for when the resident or fellow is doing your procedure while the Dr just stepped in for the timeout.

Correct. Exercise has tremendous physical benefits which can greatly impact healthy body composition long term. But your average overweight client who wants rapid results thinks they can 'burn fat and calories' during exercise and melt pounds off. That's just a very inefficient way to lose body fat.
Losing weight is a simple equation.  Burn more calories than you take in and you will lose weight.  The food is fairly irrelevant when talking about straight weight loss.  Calories in vs Calories out.

if the new asphalt mix that's getting paved isn't so screwed up that you can obviously see the problem with the mix (assuming that it's been adequately compacted), the acceptance testing in the laboratory is primarily so the third party consultant can churn fees.
Maybe its different in other states, but that's not true on a couple levels in Colorado, especially for state work. The acceptance testing is typically done by the state, the consultant lab testing is usually to find the specific gravity daily so the compaction can be verified in the field. Also, it is very common for the acceptance testing to come back with too much or too little asphalt binder and  get a massive price reduction (shortened life of the road) or occasionally have them remove and replace the asphalt. The rules here have been similar for decades, prior to the massive rise in consultants.

the ABV content printed on wine labels are not 100% accurate. the TTB allows tolerances of 1.5% for wines listed below 14% and 1.0% for wines listed above that number.

for example, a Chardonnay with an ABV listed on the label at 12.5% could have an actual ABV content of as low as 11.0% and as high as 14.0%. a Zinfandel with a listed ABV of 15.1% could actually be as low as 14.1% or as high as 16.1%. wineries are not required by law to show/print the actual ABV, only a number that is within the tolerance.

IIRC you are a fairly fit guy who is probably close to your ideal weight most of the time. For you, yes, additional high intensity exercise will make an impact cause you aren't too far from where you need to be.

But 5-7 hours of higher intensity cardio plus 3-4 days of strength training is a lot of time spent exercising.

Most people are slowly gaining body fat and slowly losing muscle mass. So making no change in diet and exercising a few times a week is largely ineffective.
Stop killing my illusions!  I'm going to get ripped by following this approach.

Most power/chemical plants release way more pollutants into the atmosphere/environment than they report to the EPA.

The vast majority of CPAs research everything but the most basic of questions.  Even if they think they know the answer they won't give it unless they know for sure.  There is way too much information out there from tax law to investment options to state and local laws to try and keep up to date on it all, so they basically can't even try and the "continuing ed" requirements are almost pointless.  Unless it is a specialist at a large firm, CPA's do very little to stay on top of their field...and quite honestly, no human being can stay on top of it.  CPA's are expected to be like a tax attorney, financial advisor and corporate analyst all in one.  All a CPA license really says is that this person is really good at researching and comprehending information.

If you eat processed food, you are eating a lot of "food grade" items that range from rubber, to lubricants to paper
i'd like to hear a little more about this.  what falls under the umbrella of "processed".  what is "food grade"? are we talking some food mixed with other additives?

What's with the recent disdain for lawyers?

Secret from the lawyer field: we aren't all bottom-dwelling bs artists looking to take any case to overbill and make a buck no matter who it impacts and we don't have a magical lawyer wand which turns irrational or unreasonable positions into gold. Oh, and there are actually many public defenders that provide better criminal defense than many high-priced private lawyers.

Reddit says about 50% of lawyers are incompetent . Agree or Disagree?

Recent?

Most people who find themselves in a legal dispute, whether a personal matter like a divorce or eviction or a multi-million dollar business dispute, are readily willing to lie, conceal or destroy documents and commit fraud in order to get an advantage (although they don't use those terms, nor are they comfortable acknowledging what they are doing). This is particularly true when an insurance company is on the other side. In many cases, its only the presence of a lawyer that actually insures honesty and fair dealing in a legal dispute or business transaction. Many clients consider it part of a lawyer's job to help them conceal and obfuscate information that should be revealed.

"There are two types of companies: those that have been hacked, and those who don't know they have been hacked." - John Chambers, Cisco CEO
My company gets a large number of daily hacking attempts from Russia, China and many other places.  I honestly have no clue what they would or could do with anything they find - insider trading is the only thing I can come up with - we are a consumer goods company.

I have been in numerous plants that make "food", from breads and cookies to potato chips and candies. They all have some amount of FDA approved "food grade" material in them. These materials range from rubber and plastic to mineral based lubricants.

Are these ingredients, or are they contaminants?

A lot of hospitals are treating patients like factory products, except when you're putting out bad products in a factory, there is some sort of correction action to fix the problem.  In a hospital when doctors or nurses are doing bad things there is no corrective action.  If you try to make things better you'll end up fired.  Just like in factories alot of people are just there for a paycheck and really don't give a crap about their products/ patients.  Not me but it happens.

Neither, because, as Yankee kind of said, that's just a far too broad and general statements not using nearly well-defined enough terms with barriers and standards.

Oh and here is one that really bothers me. Certain pharma companies purchase grain and then have it tested to make sure its of the highest quality to feed to their lab rats. Guess what they do with it if it does not pass their standards? The sell it to large scale bread manufacturers. So the bread you eat isn't fit for a lab rat.

Consumer goods is a broad category, but they might be looking to gather information about the products you produce and sell them to your competition.

Alot of truth in this statement.

Also, Dentists remain the most highly compensated of the non-specialist medical professionals but insurance and huge school loans are limiting current profitability. And yeah, you might want to ask your Dentist if your crown was made in the USA.  At one time, 1/3 of restorations were being made in unregulated countries like China.

average net income was $179,960 for general practitioner (GP) dentists and $320,460 for specialists in 2015. Also, the average annual net income was $195,200 for owner GPs

This is appalling to me.   :jawdrop:  We hear about China putting chemicals in their milk or lead and cadmium in their toys, but I never considered that would be done here in the USA. I looked at it as China shipping us their industrial waste and the US being the sucker. Wtf? What are these regulatory agencies doing not policing this? It's kind of the same way I wonder who signs the checks for all the government pork?

It's impossible to have 0% rat ####/other weird stuff in processed food.  The FDA seems to be doing a difficult job good enough since people are dying left and right.

I'd maybe agree with this if you didn't say "most IT people" and said "most PC support people" - two very different groups
They all do it, but PC support by far does it the most.  I'm not saying it's a bad thing.  It's the smartest initial move to find a solution or install instructions.

I don't see this as a bad thing at all

Golf equipment industry/design for the past 20 years:

Core driver technology has changed very little in the last 10 years. Any supposed gains in distance and forgiveness are untrue since we've hit the USGA allowable size and CT (spring face measurement) a long time ago. The rest is hype aside from very small changes (like TM movable weight technology). If you have a decent titanium 460cc driver from years ago you are set for the most part.

Irons are even worse. The biggest advancement in the last 30 years was the Ping Eye 2 as far as game improvement/forgiveness and anything past that is glorified hype. Small gains yes, but nothing like the Eye 2.

Once your equipment is past a certain threshold (10 years ago or so), it's the Indian not the arrow. Don't waste your money on equipment and focus on lessons.
I haven't played golf in about 6 years but this is what I have. Black dot. Love em.

I'd guess that 50% of practicing lawyers are essentially incompetent.  There is a pretty good reason a lot of people have disdain for the profession.

Banks really are ####### you over at every turn in pursuit of windfall profits. Except for the one I work for. Mine is good.
The majority of bank fees are easily avoidable and happen because of customer ignorance of their own accounts. Most desk folks can help you ensure you are setup correctly if you just ask, however some will be out for themselves and just there to sell you something so they can make their goal.

Heck, the eye2 have grooves that are better than anything legal today, don't they?
Yes, but illegal for USGA sanctioned event play (if you care).

Treat others as you want to be treated.  Act like an #####, expect to get treated as such.  Mutual respect goes a long way.

That guy in the Hilary ads was a professor of mine. Trump's not alone doing that kind of move.
Do you know anything about the specifics of that case? He said Trump owed him $100k and I would assume a job of that magnitude would entail a written contract? Why wouldn't he sue?
