Owens to Hold a Press Conference (1 Viewer)

Did TO specifically apologize to McNabb?
OH YES!!! MCNabb, Reid, the owners, the fans, the fans sisters and mothers and kids, the orgnization, the league.

Is much is full after eating the entire humble pie!

Luckily it was him that ate it .... if I ate it, listening to drew would make me throw it up!

Did TO specifically apologize to McNabb?
Yes. But to me all the apologies sounded like "Damn, you're serious. I'm really sorry" Not only did he apologize to McNabb, but McNabb, Reid, Banner, Laurie, Laurie's dad....

This press conference and apology was for next season. Both TO and Drew know that the Eagles will NOT accept him back unless forced to do so after next week's hearing. TO is laying the ground work in hopes of landing one more big contract.

 Exactly what I was thinking. They're playing the game and saying he wants to go back to the Eagles to help with the grievance procedure, but this was all about his next contract.

<conspiracy>

What if TO knew that was going to happen, and just set Rosenhaus up? He fires him after that debacle, and all is forgiven.

</conspiracy>
TO is not that smartDrew is, but he would gain nothing by it.

It would be nice but it is not gonna shake out that way.
One of the guys on WIP was on ESPN earlier today and they had discussed the possibility of Rosenhaus distancing himself from TO. The direction Rosenhaus took the press conference would certainly indicate that this could be the case.

I heard the press conference on the Dan Patrick show and I don't like TO even more now! You could tell he wasn't being sincere at all.

You mean like personally vouching for him, saying "I love him", etc.?

I love it, The Eagle have brought TO back to earth, took him off his high horse, gave him a reality check all in one. playing a game that he must have once loved for a living and not happy with it. Would love to see TO's next job be "Would you like fries with that" but some team will take a chance with him and pay him millions to destroy their lockerroom.

I had the streaming radio set up at work and just a couple of minutes after 3 PM (EST) a guy at work came up to me and started asking me work questions and making a bunch of redundant and obvious statements. By the time I was finished with the guy the press conference was already over....AARRRGH.If anyone has a link to a reply of the press conference I would love to get to listen to it.Thanks.

RE: Distance between T.O. and Rosenhaus

Interesting concept. From the get go this has been a PR nightmare for Rosenhaus. Couple it with the Javon Walker hold-out...reports...ACL incident, Drew is actually having a terrible PR year. I know he got Plaxico a below-market-value contract with the Giants as well.

But this is probably the first time I can ever remember Drew Rosenhaus having a bad PR moment (from a player's perspective). I am referring to his preception by other potential clients, not fans and media personnel.

Does anyone here see ANY way that he will play this season? I'm wondering if it would be a good move to hit up the TO owners and offer something minimal. Can the Eagles reverse their stance at this point? Maybe just leave it at a four game suspension?

he's not playing again this year.

Honestly, I wonder whether either TO or Rosey think this way. I think they're cut from the same cloth in that they both believe that "any publicity is good publicity."

If you think he might play ... just wait! He will pop up on the waiver wire very very shortly!

That would just mean that he read the thread during his training camp holdout where I outlined that as one strategy he ought to consider. Now, months later, it's far to late for that gambit. To much water under the bridge.

Howard Eskin is saying there is 100% certainty that the Eagles WILL NOT under ANY circumstances take T.O. back. He said everyone on Earth can quote him, but:A) They will NOT take him backB) They will NOT release himC) They are NOT doing this for the money and will gladly pay him and not request his signing bonus backD) There is no precedent by rule or arbitor to force the Eagles to release TO as long as they're willing to pay him and keep him inactive

They'd have been best to let TO speak, no questions and leave. TO did give the impression that he was sorry. I felt as though Rosenhaus erased TO's entire message by blaming the media, etc. As if TO isn't accountable for what comes out of his mouth. TO even had a grin at the end of the press conference. These guys are just dancing the dance to make TO look appealing for the next sucker.

The entire press conference was a DR production. TO was the stooge, he said nothing of any consequence. DR, on the other hand, made it look as though TO was the bad guy by answering the majority of very poinient questions with a no comment response. DR knows there is no chance in hell that the Eagles reverse their decision and allow TO to play. DR has just played the "I did the best I could" card. He can now walk away with little or no explanation necessary to other clients or potential clients.

 As someone else pointed out, I HATE Howard Eskin (more than I dislike T.O. by far) but he is plugged in with the Birds and with how emphatic he was (challenging anyone to quote him) I think it's pretty clear that the Eagles are already using all their backchannels to signal that this press conference was all about TO and his next destination and absolutely nothing to do with 2005 and the Eagles.

Aren't you at all upset about this outcome? I mean, as a die hard Eagles fan, any chance of going to the Superbowl is over for you guys. I just can't believe all parties involved let it come to this. Nobody wins here, including the Eagles.

That's exactly what I was thinking earlier. Didn't get to see the PC but sounds about like their best bet.

I am not an Eagles fan but if I was one I'd be happy to have that scum bag off of my team, I don't know if I would even want them to win if he was on my team, to see him win a Super Bowl would make me puke. I do like the Eagles a hell of a lot more right now than I did a couple of weeks ago though.

If they really "want to be done with him" why don't they just release him?Clearly they don't want to be done with him, at least not yet, so why not just be honest and say they are not letting him play to punish him?

Not to mention all those that drafted him in FF :lmao:

The NFL wins in the short term and long term. The Eagles win in the long term.
Long term is right, it will be a looooooooong time before they are playing any more championship games in Philly.

Long term, the NFL and the Eagles win. Neither can afford a breakdown in team discipline whereby the inmates run the asylum. The line can be pushed occasionally but can't be permanently crossed.

Sure I am, but I've long ago come to terms with that aspect of it. During the preseason I honestly believed it would end this way, but the FAN side of me hoped otherwise.Objectively I think this IS the best thing for the organization. Sure our SB hopes are dashed this year, but I wasn't sure we had a great shot anyway. McNabb is hurt, our defense isn't playing up to its normal levels, and inevitably the team is going to have a down year after so many successful ones in a row.

Now we move on, have NO financial burden from TO beyond this year, McNabb can get healthy, and we have the best set of draft choices we've had in ages. Reload...get ready for another sustained run in 2006 and beyond

Why do you say that? McNabb and Westbrook are signed long-term, as are the entire secondary. They'll have a ton of cap room next year and all of their draft picks. They obviously have some holes to fill and are clearly not as good as last year's team. But I wouldn't dismiss them as a perennial bottom-feeder.

I'm really interested to see how the NFLPA works this out. The precedence has been set by the Bucs, but I still don't see how being a class A jerk can cost you this much money and have your career screwed with. Cut the guys, yes, but string him along an not allow him to shop his talents on the open market and take $1mil. from him? I just don't see how this much power can be wielded by management. This is something that can easily be abused by ownership in the future.

Try being a first class jerk in your job, and insult your superiors and workmates, and see how much consideration you get from the company. TO still has some trade value, which is why they didn't release him.

This is not true. They cannot trade him because the trade deadline has passed. If they want to keep him next year they would have to pay him an $8million roster bonus which they won't do. The Eagles are going to get nothing for TO.

 Can't answer much better than this. I guess I am still in shock. I will always believe it could have been avoided with more effort from both sides. I think McNabb and TO could have done great things for a few years, and the Eagles would have continued to be yearly contenders. I guess TO is really that unbearable if they let that ship sail...

Agreed. Why would anybody give up a high pick for him when the Eagles are gonna release him anyway? My only thoughts are to:

A. Punish him ala Keyshawn.

B. Prevent him from signing with another team and having to face him this year

You're right, you can get canned and collect unemployment and see what the market will offer for your services. Not too many real world jobs have contracts involved, but clearly the NFL contracts are barely worth the paper their written on as they can easily be circumvented. There are plenty of talented jerks in the real world who keep their jobs because they also perform (bring in biz, make the co. money, etc.). I know a lawyer who is the biggest waste of baby batter on the planet, who basically emotionally abuses his co-workers but he brings in the billable so he's o.k. Performance isn't the issue with TO. Being "nice" is. As far as we know, no drugs, beatings, murder charges, etc. Charges that some current NFL players have yet they are active today. It is a fascinating labor question.

They can't trade him this year, but they can try to trade him in the offseason. They will probably still have to cut him because nobody will trade for somebody they know will be cut anyway. As for cutting him now, they don't want him to end up on any team they are competing against. There is no guarantee that won't happen.

My thoughts exactly. But I think it's more of (B) than (A). The NFL is a business. I'm sure there's a little spite in suspending him the entire season and having nothing to do with him. But to outright release him now, and let another team snatch him up (and for nothing) is not a very smart move on their part. They are getting nailed for $$ anyways, so why not just let him rot the rest of the season and not improve another team by letting him go now?
