Got an 11 year old starting middle school who's getting his first cell phone. Anybody use a parental control app to limit internet access or monitor texting/other activities?

We just had a thread on this...
Our 11yo just got his first phone for bday and middle school use (Android).
We're using Family Link (Google) to monitor and control his use... including automatically shutting off at a prescribed time. Using Life 360 to track where he is...free version shows us exactly where the phone is with gps and alerts us when he gets home or to school. It also shows him where we are, so he'll know if we're on our way or not.

I did a search for "Phone" and came up empty. I figured there had been a thread on it.

one of the best ideas i have heard recently is creating a .xxx suffix for all porn related sites and not letting them use .com anymore. This would make it much easier to block sites that are not child appropriate.

The aforementioned Google Family Link does have that feature to lock a device. I've done quite a bit of reading on it over the past few months as my oldest is about to hit that "I want/need a phone" stage and it seems pretty robust. Life 360 is good as well for location services...for my wife to make sure I don't go to a liquor store lol

Google family link worked well..... WHen she became 13 it was a bit PIA converting stuff over as it was supposed to be seemless and it didnt end up that way
