For me these drafts have been a huge reason (along with gin? ;)  ) that I started embracing the pop.   Not that I listen to a ton, but I've said without shame that 1989 is a great album top to bottom.   I listen to it quite a bit.   I like a bit of other pop like Katy, Kesha, Lady Gaga, etc..  but none of them have a top to bottom good album like TS - they are more for a spotify party mix than popping on an album.   So I became a fan in my 40s too.
I finally broke you down

OK, it's time.

Round 11:

NEIL YOUNG

On the Beach (1974)

Zuma (1975)

Ragged Glory (1990)

The packaging of Neil's Archives Vol. 2 showed us that contemporary reviewers did not understand On the Beach. At all. They thought it was weird and depressing. Those of course are two of the many reasons why it's great. An apocalyptic theme pervades, despite the songs being written at different points between 1970 and 1974, and side 2 has a marvelously hazy vibe to it due to being recorded under the influence of something called honeyslides.

Revolution Blues (#15 on my Neil countdown)

On the Beach (#18 on my Neil countdown)

Zuma was Neil's return to a more mainstream rock sound after three albums of stuff that was definitely not that. IMO it, along with side 2 of Rust Never Sleeps, are the main sources of the "Godfather of Grunge" label. And those of you who followed my Neil countdown know it's home to my favorite song of all time.

Danger Bird (#23 on my Neil countdown)

Cortez the Killer (#1 on my Neil countdown)

After a career revival the year before with Freedom, Neil cemented his place in the hard rock canon with Ragged Glory, which updates and distills everything great about his work with Crazy Horse. It holds a special place in my heart because it prompted the tour on which I saw Neil live for the first time, which remains the greatest show I have ever seen by anyone.

F*!#in' Up (#11 on my Neil countdown)

Love to Burn (#31 on my Neil countdown)
Nice - I was contemplating a different one for the most recent.

11 - Spoon

A Series of Sneaks (1998)

Girls Can Tell (2001)

Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (2007)

I love this and was going to go with Girls Can Tell, too, just figured I’d go later with “They Want…”

Girls is a finer album, probably. Love “Fitted Shirt” for its guitar freak out.

Yes, when somebody eventually does a ranking on all Spoon songs, The Fitted Shirt should be at #1.

Love to see the 11 A.M. picks from everybody. Good work, all!

Some on-brand, and some curveballs (did not see krista and R.E.M., but I think -- I know -- she gets pigeonholed with the Beatles, so that's cool.)
When she isn't doing some type of Beatles theme or another, she is one of the drafters I suspect might snipe me on an R.E.M. song/album.

She certainly would. Nothing would surprise me, really. Aside from doing Beatles themes, she has one of the most diverse music tastes (classical and jazz, too) on the board. No real surprises. Just didn't expect it and hadn't noticed before. It was probably there, I just missed it.

11 TRIPLE BONUS

Speaking of people cancelled, he damn near originated it

Jerry Lee Lewis

Live at the Star-Club Hamburg (1964)

High School Confidential

Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On

Another Place Another Time (1968)

What Made Milwaukee Famous (Has Made a Loser Out Of Me)

Walking The Floor Over You

She Even Woke Me Up To Say Goodbye (1970)

Working Man Blues

She Even Woke Me Up To Say Goodbye
Wow. I know you dig him, but that's more than a bold strategy, Cotton, that's shooting the moon. Sixties and seventies with Jerry Lee? I'll have to listen to a track from each.

It’s country so buyer beware but he was a huge county star in the late 60s and early 70s. He hit after hit on the county charts during that time.

She has sniped me more than once with them, so I haven't forgotten. I haven't forgotten the others that have sniped me too.  <_<

The “good kind” of country though IMO. Johnny Cash and the like. Heck Dylan often ventured into or adjacent to county so that was my connection. Also blues influence and the piano has some shades of my Nina Simone. Hope it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb on the playlist.

I wouldn't worry about it if it did. I know mine won't flow, and that's fine by me, really. The songs are hopefully strong enough to transcend BPM or genre concerns. I'm used to jerking back and forth between influences, so a list that does so would be no surprise.

eta* I'm listening to your playlist now. I jumped back in with Prince and it segues to Aretha. It's awesome, man. #1 Rolling Stone song of all-time right now and then a soul ballad. Nice.

eta2* I'm listening pretty much all the way through. I love the Jerry Lee Lewis rock n' roll songs and the more upbeat "Walking The Floor Over You." "Working Man Blues" strikes me as disconnected and false -- I mean, it's hard to picture Jerry Lee Lewis with performance revenues ever being a working man like a coal miner in West Virginia -- but I guess he can be indulged that the show biz life is working life. That said, "What Made Milwaukee Famous" and "She Even Woke Me Up To Say Goodbye" sounded pretty good. While they don't necessarily land like Cash or Jones or some of the existential/gospel country moaners, they're earnest attempts at country.

eta3* I think your playlist is really, really strong. I just clicked on it to hear it again for the hell of it. Van was just sitting there, and I love that song. Then I looked at the other artists and was like, "Those are some fantastic picks." Some are new to me, like Sharon Van Etten and also Kate Bush, who I've only heard of, and never from. So that was interesting. Put me in a "Van Etten is really good" camp. I enjoyed her.

Yikes!  I typed this up last night but didn't really suspect I'd be sniping anyone!  Glad to see you got some other great R.E.M. albums anyway.  They have many good ones to choose from.

Aw, shucks.

Really, thanks to all the participants and to the commissioner for thinking of it, implementing the rules, doing the sheet, etc. Everything. I love these exercises and am always thrilled with the discussions and delight of discovering something new or remembering stuff already known (almost always more the former).

Cool stuff all around, folks. There's still tomorrow, but figured I'd say that now.

10.21 - Nujabes - Modal Soul (2005) / Spiritual State (2011)

I've picked Nujabes albums at the end of drafts before, because I know he's miles off the radar.  But I will say that he is probably the single most influential artist of my musical life of the past 10 years.

They're not Billboard or Pitchfork favorites, but these are essential jazz hip hop / nu jazz / lo-fi hip hop albums, and I would be remiss if I didn't draft them, given how important they are to me.  I would be lying if I said "Island", the last song off his last (posthumous) album didn't make me tear up a little bit every time I hear it.  Uyama Hiroto - who is also an amazing artist in his own right - was a friend and frequent collaborator, and the finishing touches he put on this song and this album are just incredible.

"Island (feat. Uyama Hiroto and Haruka Nakamura)"

"Luv (sic.) Part 3 (feat Shing02)"

"Prayer"

"Feather (feat. Cise Starr and Akin)"

Agree, it was a really fun draft and I look forward to checking out some playlists starting with Rocks. Great idea by Eephus, was a perfect twist.

never heard this before- thanks. are you a fan of Guru (Jazzmatazz) and/or United Future Organization?

Guru, of course; I'm a big fan of Gang Starr and have drafted their albums many times in these drafts.  I think I even used like a second round pick on him in the "build a hip-hop group draft" like a decade ago.  I may or may not be considering Gang Starr for the triple round :oldunsure:  .

I have listened to one or two of the Jazzmatazz albums, but I could probably stand to revisit them.   Which ones are your favorites?

I am not familiar with United Future Organization, will definitely check them out.  A quick read on Wiki sounds like something I would very much enjoy.
