Pluribus TV show discussion thread (2 Viewers)

I'm interested enough to keep watching. Not a stellar endorsement and I'm not recommending it to friends yet but so far its worth watching in a crowded world of great television to choose from during my limited couch time these days.

Is it odd that the collective wisdom of billions of people failed to realize the garbage bag was too heavy for the drone? Or is there a clue there? Maybe the hive mind is incapable of comprehending that she wouldn't follow their instructions on weight? It seemed like an odd event to me and I'm suspicious.
They told her the max weight...she overloaded it

Sure, but when the drone struggled to lift it, why wouldn’t they abort? I agree it was odd…maybe just an attempt to inject some humor and not something to read into too deeply.

I am just hoping it is in fact a giant bag of dicks
I can attest that it will take a few seconds for the observer to recognize what he or she is seeing if so...
Not you though. You are the singular who can recognize a giant bag of dicks immediately. Should put that on your resume. It’s impressive.
Well it helped when the person showing it to me said, “Hey, want to see an actual bag of dicks? Haha”
That's one of the ways we differ....I would have said "No, I'm good".
I mean, it was asked of me while the speaker was opening the freezer. Not much time to decline. Plus it's a story!

This is how I took it along with her trying to send a message to the hivemind that she is not always going to do what they say. I see the result as an exhibition of their naivete as it seems like they are trusting to a fault because they would never lie or disobey their hive directive or whatever. This seems to jive with what I took to be their genuine hurt from Carol betraying them by injecting Xosia with the truth serum stuff.

Definitely bodies under the sheet, unless all of the symbolism and foreshadowing they were throwing at us the entire episode is a red herring. The wolf subplot how they were trying to get to her partner's body. The "Reuse" signs all over the grocery store. Etc.

When Gilligan has used cliffhangers like this, it was mainly to recontextualize previous happenings and events, not some crazy plot twist.

It didn’t appear to weigh 17 #s when she held it out in front of her. Not sure that relevant or important in any way, but she’s either really strong, or the prop dept blew it.

I agree with this. Except I don't think she was disobeying the weight restriction. I think she just wanted all of the garbage gone and had no idea how much the bag weighed.

That's fair, too. The point remains though that the hive seems to assume Carol will be honest and respectful and they are naive to the fact that Carol doesn't respect them and therefore either doesn't care about or intentionally disobeys their requests.

ETA: My assumption is that this (the hive assuming Carol is well-intentioned towards them when she is not) will be a recurring motif throughout the show.

I dont think the hive is dumb enough or naive to not know Carol's intentions. I think they simply think their efforts to fix the immunity problem will eventually correct it and up to this point haven't been worried about her. They have been much more worried about her flipping out and causing so many deaths.

Now, with the events of the recent couple episodes, and with the hive mind leaving Albuquerque, they may be rethinking her as a threat.

I absolutely LOVE how passive aggressive the hive mind was this last episode with the voicemails and the drone pickups.

I think the hive started out naive and assumed the non-converted (like Carol) would be like them. And for the most part they are. They're compliant like the Mother of the young son. The harem guy is making the most of the situation, but isn't harming anyone.
The guy resorting to eating dog food seems to be the only one (we've seen) like Carol that isn't just going along with it.
The hive has the collective knowledge of everyone on earth, but doesn't have the worldly experience to go along with it. Book smart, but not street smart.

I'm confident in my sense of humor- has never bugged me if people find stuff funny that I don't and vice versa. that said, I'm not finding this terribly funny the way some of you are... kinda wish I was, but I also didn't find the movie Anora funny (which some of you did)... and ultimately that's fine. but also makes this not as good show for me, even if it's interesting and nicely shot.

I don't recall anyone saying this show was funny. Is it supposed to be? I mean, Rhea's facial expressions and mannerisms are somewhat humorous at times, but this is not a show I laugh at.

Someone earlier in the thread mentioned LOLing at the trash drone. I found it amusing when it wrapped itself around the light pole. But, I wouldn't say it is funny.

It's funny like The Bear is funny.

It's nowhere close.

I think you're missing my joke. The Bear isn't laugh out loud funny at all yet it won a ton of awards for a comedy series.

I'm not at all suggesting that the tone of The Bear and Pluribus are similar. Just that they are similarly not laugh out loud funny and aren't really comedies despite it being suggested they are. .

I'll choose to disagree. I know The Bear isn't a comedy, but it is very humorous in parts.

Only watched one episode. Did I give up too soon?
yes.
What about this show that appeals to you?
If you gave up after 1 episode I am unsure anything I say will sway you.

But I am loving this show so far. I don't mind the slowness. I enjoy the crabby main character. I am intrigued by the hive mind and how it works.
I haven't given up, it's justs we have so much on our list we've never gotten around to watching another one.

Sorry...came off as smart-assy.

Was just pointing out the source of confusion.

Yes, I LOL-ed at the trash drone. I was very high, and listening to it trying to gain altitude and then go spinning around the light pole made me laugh. I found it funny when the Mauritanian survivor wanted to take Zosia as his companion to Vegas, or when he showed up for the meeting in AF1 with a harem. It was funny when the Plurbs needed space and they created that outgoing message for the voicemail. It was funny when Carol started cussing in Spanish with the survivor in Paraguay. There are comedic elements to this show/series. Sorry for finding things funny.

All of Gilligan's work has had comedic elements. Shouldnt be a surprise to anyone.

One of my favorite BB scenes is Jesse turning himself into the michelin man with his meth cooking suit. And do I need to remind everyone of the Hoboken Squat Cobbler?

Mrs. Woz is still hanging on but is a skeptic as well still. I'm enjoying it.
I hope I can talk my wife into watching the 3rd episode. We generally watch TV together beween 7-9 or later sometimes. I doubt I would ever continue it if she doesn't.

Yeah, when that happens for me I usually save the shows to binge when I have downtime when traveling for work.

Chuckled in episode 1 where it mentioned at the bookstore reading something about a part 4 to a trilogy.
My completely inaccurate guess:

The writer uses substances to enhance her creativity and records it to gather the info.

This show is her unpublished book that is a much deeper genre than her unremarkable romance novels. Wifey never completed the rough draft (she died and can't) and just wanted to placate her (the pod people). Wondering if I should pay more attention to the 'before' portions. Maybe each of the survivors correlates to something in her past (over-induging in Iceland/Finland - wherever it was... because they can... is the wannabe President harem guy, etc).

Final episode should go back thru and show all the ah-ha moments.

Waiting for a barbershop quartet in Skokie reference in the background somewhere.

in the frozen hotel scene we learned Carol had eggs frozen. The hive might not need to harm her to get her stem cells. Although the last sentence on the hotel advertising board said “Your wishes will be respected” which doesn’t leave as much grey area as the hives previous lawyerly statements.

I found the whole agriculture thing to bump up against my suspension of disbelief though. How are they going to keep feeding the livestock without harvesting grain? Or will those just starve once existing stock runs out.

Big picture I am interested to see which ideas he explores. Are we going to learn anything more about the origin of the hive? Will there eventually be aliens? This thing seems like a great way to clear planets of intelligent life for future colonization. But will we ever go there?

She had embryos, not eggs frozen right?
I didn’t know there was a difference. I skimmed that scene just now - Carol used the word eggs. Could be a throwaway line and not relevant.
I don't know either. Thought it was embryos but if she said eggs then maybe thats what it is. Embryos are fertilized eggs. I would think eggs would have the correct stem cells, but an embryo only has 1/2 her DNA. I am also not a scientist, so...
